Pluripotential theory for tropical toric varieties and non-archimedean Monge-Ampére equations

Tropical toric varieties are partial compactifications of finite dimensional real vector spaces associated with rational polyhedral fans. We introduce plurisubharmonic functions and a Bedford--Taylor product for Lagerberg currents on open subsets of a tropical toric variety. The resulting tropical toric pluripotential theory provides the link to give a canonical correspondence between complex and non-archimedean pluripotential theories of invariant plurisubharmonic functions on toric varieties. We will apply this correspondence to solve invariant non-archimedean Monge--Ampère equations on toric and abelian varieties over arbitrary non-archimedean fields.

Differentiability of relative volumes over an arbitrary non-Archimedean field

Given an ample line bundle $L$ on a geometrically reduced projective scheme defined over an arbitrary non-Archimedean field, we establish a differentiability property for the relative volume of two continuous metrics on the Berkovich analytification of $L$, extending previously known results in the discretely valued case. As applications, we provide fundamental solutions to certain non-Archimedean Monge--Ampère equations, and generalize an equidistribution result for Fekete points. Our main technical input comes from determinant of cohomology and Deligne pairings.

Positivity properties of metrics and delta-forms

In previous work, we have introduced delta-forms on the Berkovich analytification of an algebraic variety in order to study smooth or formal metrics via their associated Chern delta-forms. In this paper, we investigate positivity properties of delta-forms and delta-currents. This leads to various plurisubharmonicity notions for continuous metrics on line bundles. In the case of a formal metric, we show that many of these positivity notions are equivalent to Zhang's semipositivity. For piecewise smooth metrics, we prove that plurisubharmonicity can be tested on tropical charts in terms of convex geometry. We apply this to smooth metrics, to canonical metrics on abelian varieties and to toric metrics on toric varieties.

Skeletons and tropicalizations

Let $K$ be a complete, algebraically closed non-archimedean field with ring of integers $K^\circ$ and let $X$ be a $K$-variety. We associate to the data of a strictly semistable $K^\circ$-model $\mathscr X$ of $X$ plus a suitable horizontal divisor $H$ a skeleton $S(\mathscr X,H)$ in the analytification of $X$. This generalizes Berkovich's original construction by admitting unbounded faces in the directions of the components of H. It also generalizes constructions by Tyomkin and Baker--Payne--Rabinoff from curves to higher dimensions. Every such skeleton has an integral polyhedral structure. We show that the valuation of a non-zero rational function is piecewise linear on $S(\mathscr X, H)$. For such functions we define slopes along codimension one faces and prove a slope formula expressing a balancing condition on the skeleton. Moreover, we obtain a multiplicity formula for skeletons and tropicalizations in the spirit of a well-known result by Sturmfels--Tevelev. We show a faithful tropicalization result saying roughly that every skeleton can be seen in a suitable tropicalization. We also prove a general result about existence and uniqueness of a continuous section to the tropicalization map on the locus of tropical multiplicity one.

Classification of normal toric varieties over a valuation ring of rank one

Normal toric varieties over a field or a discrete valuation ring are classified by rational polyhedral fans. We generalize this classification to normal toric varieties over an arbitrary valuation ring of rank one. The proof is based on a generalization of Sumihiro's theorem to this non-noetherian setting. These toric varieties play an important role for tropicalizations.
