QCD Sum Rules and the Induced Pseudoscalar Coupling

We present an extension of the QCD sum rule method in the external fields so as to determine the induced pseudoscalar coupling constant g_P, which tests the validity of the partially conserved axial current (PCAC) hypothesis. This is essentially that we pick out the "higher-order" effects of both the hadron and quark (QCD) sides. A specific QCD sum rules for g_P is obtained and its prediction is briefly analyzed. It turns out that the final prediction on g_P is extremely stable. In view of the versatile nature of the present QCD sum rule methods, we appendix some discussions on the possible future of the method.

Neutrons and antiprotons in ultrahigh energy cosmic rays

The neutron fraction in the very high energy cosmic rays near the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) cutoff energy is analyzed by taking into account the time dilation effect of the neutron decays and also the pion photoproduction behaviors above the GZK cutoff. We predict a non-trivial neutron fraction above the GZK cutoff and a negligibly small neutron fraction below. However, there should be a large antiproton fraction in the high energy cosmic rays below the GZK cutoff in several existing models for the observed cosmic-ray events above and near the GZK cutoff. Such a large antiproton fraction can manifest itself by the muon charge ratio $μ^+/μ^-$ in the collisions of the primary nucleon cosmic rays with the atmosphere, if there is no neutron contribution. We suggest to use the muon charge ratio as one of the information to detect the composition of the primary cosmic rays near or below the GZK cutoff.

Neutrino mass induced radiatively by supersymmetric leptoquarks

We show how nonzero Majorana neutrino masses can be radiatively generated by extending the MSSM with leptoquark chiral multiplets without violating R-parity. It is found that, with these particles, the R-parity conservation does not imply lepton number conservation. Neutrino masses generated at a one-loop level are closely related to the down quark mass matrix. The ratio of neutrino mass-squared splittings $Δm^2_{ν_2-ν_1}/Δm^2_{ν_3-ν_2}$ obtained is naturally close to $Δm^2_{s-d}/Δm^2_{b-s}\sim 10^{-3}$ which is in the right region required to explain both the atmospheric neutrino data and the MSW solutions for the solar neutrino data.

The Neutrino Magnetic Moment Induced by Leptoquarks

Allowing leptoquarks to interact with both right-handed and left-handed neutrinos (i.e., ``non-chiral'' leptoquarks), we show that a non-zero neutrino magnetic moment can arise naturally. Although the mass of the non-chiral vector leptoquark that couples to the first generation fermions is constrained severely by universality of the $π^+$ leptonic decays and is found to be greater than 50 TeV, the masses of the second and third generation non-chiral vector leptoquarks may evade such constraint and may in general be in the range of $1\sim 100$ TeV. With reasonable input mass and coupling values, we find that the neutrino magnetic moment due to the second generation leptoquarks is of the order of $10^{-12}\sim 10^{-16} μ_{\rm B}$ while that caused by the third generation leptoquarks, being enhanced significantly by the large top quark mass, is in the range of $10^{-10}\sim 10^{-14} μ_{\rm B}$.

The Weak Parity-Violating Pion-Nucleon Coupling

We use QCD sum rules to obtain the weak parity-violating pion-nucleon coupling constant $f_{πNN}$. We find that $f_{πNN}\approx 3\times 10^{-8}$, up to an order of magnitude smaller than the ``best estimates" based on quark models. This result follows from the cancellation between perturbative and nonperturbative QCD processes not found in quark models, but explicit in the QCD sum rule method. Our result is consistent with the experimental upper limit found from $^{18}$F parity-violating measurements.

The Weak Parity-Violating Pion-Nucleon Coupling (Revised)

We use QCD sum rules to obtain the weak parity-violating pion-nucleon coupling constant $f_{πNN}$. We find that $f_{πNN}\approx 2\times 10^{-8}$, about an order of magnitude smaller than the ``best estimates'' based on quark models. This result follows from the cancellation between perturbative and nonperturbative QCD processes not found in quark models, but explicit in the QCD sum rule method. Our result is consistent with the experimental upper limit found from $^{18}$F parity-violating measurements.
