Density functional theory for systems with mesoscopic inhomogeneities

We study effects of fluctuations on the mesoscopic length-scale on systems with mesoscopic inhomogeneities. Equations for the correlation function and for the average volume fraction are derived in the self-consistent Gaussian approximation. The equations are further simplified by postulating the expression for the structure factor consistent with scattering experiments for self-assembling systems. Predictions of the approximate theory are verified by a comparison with the exact results obtained earlier for the one-dimensional lattice model with first-neighbour attraction and third-neighbour repulsion. We find qualitative agreement for the correlation function, the equation of state and the dependence of the chemical potential $μ$ on the volume fraction $ζ$. Our results confirm also that strong inhomogeneities in the disordered phase are found only in the case of strong repulsion. The inhomogeneities are reflected in an oscillatory decay of the correlation function with a very large correlation length, three inflection points in the $μ(ζ)$ curve and a compressibility that for increasing $ζ$ takes very large, very small and again very large values.

Origin of similarity of phase diagrams in amphiphilic and colloidal systems with competing interactions

We show that amphiphilic and colloidal systems with competing interactions can be described by the same Landau-Brazovskii functional. The functional is obtained by a systematic coarse-graining procedure applied tosystems with isotropic interaction potentials. Microscopic expressions for the coefficients in the functional are derived. We propose simple criteria to distinguish the effective interparticle potentials that can lead to macro- or microsegregation. Our considerations concern also charged globular proteins in aqueous solutions and other system with effective short-range attraction long-range repulsion interactions.

From the Plateau problem to periodic minimal surfaces in lipids, surfactants and diblock copolymers

We present the novel method for generation of periodic surfaces based on the simple Landau-Ginzburg model of microemulsion. We test the method on four minimal surfaces (P,D,G, and I-WP), find two new surfaces of cubic symmetry, show how to obtain periodic surfaces of high genus and n-tuply-continuous phases. We point that the Landau model used here should be generic for all systems characterized by internal interfaces, including the diblock copolymer systems.

High genus periodic gyroid surfaces of non-positive Gaussian curvature

In this paper we present the novel method for the generation of periodic embedded surfaces of nonpositive Gaussian curvature. The structures are related to the local minima of the scalar order parameter Landau-Ginzburg hamiltonan for microemulsions. The method is used to generate six unknown surfaces of Ia$\bar 3$d symmetry (gyroid) of genus 21, 53, 69, 109, 141 and 157 per unit cell. All of them but that of genus 21 are most likely the minimal surfaces. Schoen-Luzzati gyroid minimal surface of genus 5 (per unit cell) is also obtained.
