Exploring extended Higgs sectors via pair production at the LHC

Higgs sectors extended by electroweakly charged scalars can be explored by scalar pair production at the LHC. We consider a fermiophobic scenario, with decays into a pair of gauge bosons, and a fermiophilic one, with decays into top and bottom quarks. After establishing the current bounds on simplified models, we focus on an SU(5)/SO(5) composite Higgs model. This first exploration demonstrates the need for dedicated searches at current and future colliders.

Revisiting (s)neutrino dark matter in natural SUSY

We study natural supersymmetric scenarios with light right-handed neutrino superfields, and consider the possibility of having either a neutrino or a sneutrino as a dark matter candidate. For the former, we evaluate the possibility of having SUSY corrections on the $ν_4\toν_\ellγ$ decay rate, such that the NuStar bounds are relaxed. We find that corrections are too small. For sneutrino dark matter, we consider thermal and non-thermal production, taking into account freeze-out, freeze-in and super-WIMP mechanisms. For the non-thermal case, we find that the $\tildeν_R$ can reproduce the observed relic density by adjusting the R-sneutrino mass and Yukawa couplings. For the thermal case, we find the need to extend the model in order to enhance sneutrino annihilations, which we exemplify in a model with an extended gauge symmetry.

Natural SUSY: LHC and Dark Matter direct detection experiments interplay

Natural SUSY scenarios with a low value of the $μ$ parameter, are characterised by a higgsino-like dark matter candidate, and a compressed spectrum for the lightest higgsinos. We explore the prospects for probing this scenario at the 13 TeV stage of the LHC via monojet searches, with various integrated luminosity options, and demonstrate how these results are affect by different assumptions on the achievable level of control on the experimental systematic uncertainties. The complementarity between collider and direct detection experiments (present and future) is also highlighted.

Constraining the Natural MSSM through tunneling to color-breaking vacua at zero and non-zero temperature

We re-evaluate the constraints on the parameter space of the minimal supersymmetric standard model from tunneling to charge- and/or color-breaking minima, taking into account thermal corrections. We pay particular attention to the region known as the Natural MSSM, where the masses of the scalar partners of the top quarks are within an order of magnitude or so of the electroweak scale. These constraints arise from the interaction between these scalar tops and the Higgs fields, which allows the possibility of parameter points having deep charge- and color-breaking true vacua. In addition to requiring that our electro-weak-symmetry-breaking, yet QCD- and electromagnetism-preserving vacuum has a sufficiently long lifetime at zero temperature, also demanding stability against thermal tunneling further restricts the allowed parameter space.

Flavour violating bosonic squark decays at LHC

We study quark flavour violation (QFV) in the squark sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We assume mixing between the second and the third squark generations, i.e. sc_R-st_{L,R} mixing mixing. We focus on QFV effects in bosonic squark decays, in particular on the decay into the lightest Higgs boson h0, su_2 -> su_1 h0, where su_{1,2} are the lightest up-type squarks. We show that the branching ratio of this QFV decay can be quite large (up to 50 %) due to large QFV trilinear couplings, and large sc_R-st_{L, R} and st_L-st_R mixing, despite the strong constraints on QFV from B meson data. This can result in characteristic QFV final states with significant rates at LHC (14 TeV), such as pp -> gluino gluino X -> t + h0 + 3jets + Etmiss + X and pp -> gluino gluino X -> t t (or tbar tbar) + h0 + 2jets + Etmiss + X. The QFV bosonic squark decays can have an influence on the squark and gluino searches at LHC.

Lepton flavor violation in low-scale seesaw models: SUSY and non-SUSY contributions

Taking the supersymmetric inverse seesaw mechanism as the explanation for neutrino oscillation data, we investigate charged lepton flavor violation in radiative and 3-body lepton decays as well as in neutrinoless $μ-e$ conversion in muonic atoms. In contrast to former studies, we take into account all possible contributions: supersymmetric as well as non-supersymmetric. We take CMSSM-like boundary conditions for the soft supersymmetry breaking parameters. We find several regions where cancellations between various contributions exist, reducing the lepton flavor violating rates by an order of magnitude compared to the case where only the dominant contribution is taken into account. This is in particular important for the correct interpretation of existing data as well as for estimating the reach of near future experiments where the sensitivity will be improved by one to two orders of magnitude. Moreover, we demonstrate that ratios like BR($τ\to 3 μ$)/BR($τ\to μe^+ e^-$) can be used to determine whether the supersymmetric contributions dominate over the $W^\pm$ and $H^\pm$ contributions or vice versa.

The Constrained Minimal Dirac Gaugino Supersymmetric Standard Model

We examine the possibilities for constructing models with Dirac gaugino masses and unification of gauge couplings. We identify one promising model, and discuss to what extent it can have a "natural SUSY" spectrum. We then determine the low-energy constraints upon it, and propose a constrained set of boundary conditions at the unification scale. We describe the implementation of these boundary conditions in the spectrum-generator generator \SARAH and we perform a first exploration of the parameter space, specifically searching for points where the spectrum is relatively light. It is shown that the pattern of the masses of SUSY states is very different compared to any expectations from the constrained MSSM.

Flavour violating bosonic squark decays at LHC

Quark flavour conserving (QFC) fermionic squark decays, such as ~t_{1,2} -> t neutralino_i, are usually assumed in squark search analyses. Here we study quark flavour violating (QFV) bosonic squark decays, such as ~u_2 -> ~u_1 h^0/Z^0, where the mass eigenstates ~u_{1,2} are mixtures of scharm and stop quarks. We show that the branching ratios of such QFV decays can be very large due to sizable ~c_R - ~t_{R/L} and ~t_R - ~t_L mixing effects despite the very strong constraints on the QFV parameters from B meson data. This can result in remarkable QFV signatures with significant rates at LHC (14 TeV), such as pp -> gluino gluino X -> t c bar{c} bar{c} h^0/Z^0 missing-E_T X and pp -> gluino gluino X -> t t bar{c} bar{c} h^0/Z^0 missing-E_T X. The QFV bosonic squark decays can play an important role in the squark and gluino searches at LHC (14 TeV).

Flavour violating squark and gluino decays at LHC

We study the effects of squark generation mixing on squark and gluino production and decays at LHC in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with focus on the mixing between second and third generation squarks. Taking into account the constraints from B-physics experiments we show that various regions in parameter space exist where decays of squarks and/or gluinos into quark flavour violating (QFV) final states can have large branching ratios. Here we consider both fermionic and bosonic decays of squarks. Rates of the corresponding QFV signals, e.g. pp -> t t bar{c} bar{c} missing-E_T X, can be significant at LHC(14 TeV). We find that the inclusion of flavour mixing effects can be important for the search of squarks and gluinos and the determination of the underlying model parameters of the MSSM at LHC.

Full 1-loop calculation of BR$(B_{s,d}^0\to \ell \bar \ell)$ in models beyond the MSSM with SARAH and SPheno

We present the possibility of calculating the quark flavor changing neutral current decays $B_{s}^0\to \ell \bar \ell$ and $B_{d}^0\to \ell \bar \ell$ for a large variety of supersymmetric models. For this purpose, the complete one-loop calculation has been implemented in a generic form in the Mathematica package SARAH. This information is used by SARAH to generate Fortran source code for SPheno for a numerical evaluation of these processes in a given model. We comment also on the possibility to use this setup for non-supersymmetric models.

On the vacuum stability of SUSY models

The existence of multiple non-equivalent minima of the scalar potential in SUSY models both raises technical challenges and introduces interesting physics. The technical challenges are now that one has to find several minima and evaluate which is the deepest, as well as calculate the tunneling time from a false vacuum to the true vacuum. We present here studies on the vacuum stability and color/charge breaking minima in the CMSSM and R parity violating minima in a B-L extended MSSM.

Stability of R parity in supersymmetric models extended by U(1)_{B-L}

We perform a study of the stability of R-parity-conserving vacua of a constrained version of the minimal supersymmetric model with a gauged U(1)_{B-L} which can conserve R-parity, using homotopy continuation to find all the extrema of the tree-level potential, for which we also calculated the one-loop corrections. While we find that a majority of the points in the parameter space preserve R-parity, we find that a significant portion of points which naively have phenomenologically acceptable vacua which conserve R-parity actually have deeper vacua which break R-parity through sneutrino VEVs. We investigate under what conditions the deeper R-parity-violating vacua appear. We find that while previous exploratory work was broadly correct in some of its qualitative conclusions, we disagree in detail.

Stability of the CMSSM against sfermion VEVs

The recent discovery of a Higgs boson by the LHC experiments has profound implications for supersymmetric models. In particular, in the context of restricted models, such as the supergravity-inspired constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model, one finds that preferred regions in parameter space have large soft supersymmetry-breaking trilinear couplings. This potentially gives rise to charge- and/or color-breaking minima besides those with the correct breaking of $SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$. We investigate the stability of parameter points in this model against tunneling to possible deeper color- and/or charge-breaking minima of the one-loop effective potential. We find that allowed regions of the parameter space with light staus or with light stops are seriously constrained by the requirement that the tunneling time out of the normal electroweak-symmetry-breaking vacuum is more than a fifth of the age of the known Universe. We also find that "thumb rule" conditions on Lagrangian parameters based on specific directions in the tree-level potential are of limited use.

Vevacious: A Tool For Finding The Global Minima Of One-Loop Effective Potentials With Many Scalars

Several extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics contain additional scalars implying a more complex scalar potential compared to that of the Standard Model. In general these potentials allow for charge and/or color breaking minima besides the desired one with correctly broken SU(2)_L times U(1)_Y . Even if one assumes that a metastable local minimum is realized, one has to ensure that its lifetime exceeds that of our universe. We introduce a new program called Vevacious which takes a generic expression for a one-loop effective potential energy function and finds all the tree-level extrema, which are then used as the starting points for gradient-based minimization of the one-loop effective potential. The tunneling time from a given input vacuum to the deepest minimum, if different from the input vacuum, can be calculated. The parameter points are given as files in the SLHA format (though is not restricted to supersymmetric models), and new model files can be easily generated automatically by the Mathematica package SARAH. This code uses HOM4PS2 to find all the minima of the tree-level potential, PyMinuit to follow gradients to the minima of the one-loop potential, and CosmoTransitions to calculate tunneling times.

General MSSM signatures at the LHC with and without R-parity

We present the possible signatures appearing in general realizations of the MSSM based on 14 unrelated mass parameters at the SUSY scale. The parameters of the general MSSM are reduced by assuming a degeneracy of the sfermions of the first two generations with the same quantum numbers. We also assume no mass-splitting between neutral and charged Higgsinos. We do allow for separate soft breaking terms for the third generation sfermons. We consider all possible resulting $14! \approx 9 \cdot10^{10}$ relevant mass orderings and check for the dominant decay cascades and the corresponding collider signatures. In determining the dominant decay modes we assume that mixing between sparticles is sub-dominant. As preferred signatures, we consider charged leptons, missing transverse momentum, jets, and $W, Z$ or Higgs bosons. We include also the cases of bi- and trilinear R-parity violation and show that specific signatures can be used to distinguish the different scenarios.

Probing neutralino properties in minimal supergravity with bilinear R-parity violation

Supersymmetric models with bilinear R-parity violation (BRPV) can account for the observed neutrino masses and mixing parameters indicated by neutrino oscillation data. We consider minimal supergravity versions of BRPV where the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) is a neutralino. This is unstable, with a large enough decay length to be detected at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We analyse the LHC potential to determine the LSP properties, such as mass, lifetime and branching ratios, and discuss their relation to neutrino properties.

Proposal for generalised Supersymmetry Les Houches Accord for see-saw models and PDG numbering scheme

The SUSY Les Houches Accord (SLHA) 2 extended the first SLHA to include various generalisations of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) as well as its simplest next-to-minimal version. Here, we propose further extensions to it, to include the most general and well-established see-saw descriptions (types I/II/III, inverse, and linear) in both an effective and a simple gauged extension of the MSSM framework. In addition, we generalise the PDG numbering scheme to reflect the properties of the particles.

Dark matter and LHC phenomenology in a left-right supersymmetric model

Left-right symmetric extensions of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model can explain neutrino data and have potentially interesting phenomenology beyond that found in minimal SUSY seesaw models. Here we study a SUSY model in which the left-right symmetry is broken by triplets at a high scale, but significantly below the GUT scale. Sparticle spectra in this model differ from the usual constrained MSSM expectations and these changes affect the relic abundance of the lightest neutralino. We discuss changes for the standard stau (and stop) co-annihilation, the Higgs funnel and the focus point regions. The model has potentially large lepton flavour violation in both, left and right, scalar leptons and thus allows, in principle, also for flavoured co-annihilation. We also discuss lepton flavour signals due to violating decays of the second lightest neutralino at the LHC, which can be as large as 20 fb$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV.

Flavour violating gluino three-body decays at LHC

We study the effect of squark generation mixing on gluino production and decays at LHC in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) for the case that the gluino is lighter than all squarks and dominantly decays into three particles, $gl -> q qbar neut_k, gl -> q qbar' char_l$. We assume mixing between the second and the third squark generations in the up-type and down-type squark sectors. We show that this mixing can lead to very large branching ratios of the quark-flavour violating gluino three-body decays despite the strong constraints on quark-flavour violation (QFV) from the experimental data on B mesons. We also show that the QFV gluino decay branching ratios are very sensitive not only to the generation mixing in the squark sector, but also to the parameters of the neutralino and chargino sectors. We show that the branching ratio of the QFV gluino decay $gl -> c tbar (cbar t) neut_1$ can go up to ~ 40%. Analogously, that of the QFV decay $gl -> s bbar (sbar b) neut_1$ can reach ~35%. We find that the rates of the resulting QFV signatures, such as $pp -> t t cbar cbar E_T^mis$, can be significant at LHC. This could have an important influence on the gluino searches at LHC.

Flavour violating up-squark decays at LHC

We study the effect of squark generation mixing on squark production and decays at the LHC in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We show that the effect can be very large despite the very strong constraints on quark flavour violation (QFV) from experimental data on B mesons. We find that the two lightest up-type squarks ${\tilde u}_{1,2}$ can have large branching ratios for the decays into $c {\tildeχ_1^0}$ and $t {\tildeχ_1^0}$ at the same time, leading to QFV signals '$p p \to c \bar t\, (t \bar c)$ + missing-$E_T$ + $X$' with a significant rate. The observation of this remarkable signature would provide a powerful test of supersymmetric QFV at LHC. This could have a significant impact on the search for squarks and the determination of the underlying MSSM parameters.

We find that the two lightest up-type squarks su_{1,2} can have large branching ratios for the decays into 'c-quark + neutralino_1' and 't-quark + neutralino_1' at the same time due to squark generation mixing, leading to QFV signals 'pp -> c bar{t} (t bar{c}) + missing-E_T + X' with a significant rate. Impact of squark generation mixing on the search for gluinos at LHC

We study gluino decays in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with squark generation mixing. We show that the effect of this mixing on the gluino decay branching ratios can be very large in a significant part of the MSSM parameter space despite the very strong experimental constraints on quark flavour violation (QFV) from B meson observables. Especially we find that under favourable conditions the branching ratio of the the QFV gluino decay gluino -> c bar{t} (bar{c} t) + neutralino_1 can be as large as about 50%. We also find that the squark generation mixing can result in a multiple-edge (3- or 4-edge) structure in the charm-top quark invariant mass distribution. The appearance of this remarkable structure provides an additional powerful test of supersymmetric QFV at LHC. These could have an important impact on the search for gluinos and the determination of the MSSM parameters at LHC.

Impact of squark generation mixing on the search for squarks and gluinos at LHC

We study the effect of squark-generation mixing on production and decays of squarks and gluinos at LHC in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We show that the mixing effects can be very large in a significant range of the squark-generation mixing parameters despite the very strong constraints on quark-flavour violation (QFV) from experimental data on B mesons. We find that under favourable conditions the QFV decay branching ratio B(gluino -> c bar{t} (t bar{c}) neutralino_1) can be as large as about 50%, which may lead to significant QFV signals at LHC. We also find that the squark generation mixing can result in a novel multiple-edge (3- or 4-edge) structure in the charm-top quark invariant mass distribution. Further we show that the two lightest up-type squarks ~u_{1,2} can have very large branching ratios for the decays ~u_i -> c neutralino_1 and ~u_i -> t neutralino_1 simultaneously due to the mixing effect, resulting in QFV signals 'pp -> c bar{t} (t bar{c}) + missing-E_T + X' at a significant rate at LHC. These remarkable signatures could provide a powerful test of supersymmetric QFV at LHC and could have an important impact on the search for squarks and gluinos and the determination of the MSSM parameters at LHC.

LHC and lepton flavour violation phenomenology of a left-right extension of the MSSM

We study the phenomenology of a supersymmetric left-right model, assuming minimal supergravity boundary conditions. Both left-right and (B-L) symmetries are broken at an energy scale close to, but significantly below the GUT scale. Neutrino data is explained via a seesaw mechanism. We calculate the RGEs for superpotential and soft parameters complete at 2-loop order. At low energies lepton flavour violation (LFV) and small, but potentially measurable mass splittings in the charged scalar lepton sector appear, due to the RGE running. Different from the supersymmetric 'pure seesaw' models, both, LFV and slepton mass splittings, occur not only in the left- but also in the right slepton sector. Especially, ratios of LFV slepton decays, such as Br(${\tildeτ}_R \to μχ^0_1$)/Br(${\tildeτ}_L \to μχ^0_1$) are sensitive to the ratio of (B-L) and left-right symmetry breaking scales. Also the model predicts a polarization asymmetry of the outgoing positrons in the decay $μ^+ \to e^+ γ$, A ~ [0,1], which differs from the pure seesaw 'prediction' A=1$. Observation of any of these signals allows to distinguish this model from any of the three standard, pure (mSugra) seesaw setups.

Probing Neutrino Oscillations in Supersymmetric Models at the Large Hadron Collider

The lightest supersymmetric particle may decay with branching ratios that correlate with neutrino oscillation parameters. In this case the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has the potential to probe the atmospheric neutrino mixing angle with sensitivity competitive to its low-energy determination by underground experiments. Under realistic detection assumptions, we identify the necessary conditions for the experiments at CERN's LHC to probe the simplest scenario for neutrino masses induced by minimal supergravity with bilinear R parity violation.

Strong dark matter constraints on GMSB models

We reconsider the dark matter problem in supersymmetric models with gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking, with and without R-parity breaking. In these classes of models, a light gravitino forms the dark matter.Consistency with the experimental data, in particular the dark matter abundance and the small-scale power spectrum, requires additional entropy production after the decoupling of the gravitino from the thermal bath. We demonstrate that the usual mechanism via messenger number violating interactions does not work in models where the messenger belongs to SU (5) representations. This is mainly a consequence of two facts: (i) there are at least two different types of lightest messenger particles and (ii) the lightest messenger particle with SU (2) quantum numbers decays dominantly into vector bosons once messenger number is broken, a feature which has been overlooked so far. In case of SO(10) messenger multiplets we find scenarios which work if the SM gauge singlet component is rather light.

Supersymmetric type-III seesaw: lepton flavour violating decays and dark matter

We study a supersymmetric version of the seesaw mechanism type-III. The model consists of the MSSM particle content plus three copies of 24 superfields. The fermionic part of the SU(2) triplet contained in the 24 is responsible for the type-III seesaw, which is used to explain the observed neutrino masses and mixings. Complete copies of 24 are introduced to maintain gauge coupling unification. These additional states change the beta functions of the gauge couplings above the seesaw scale. Using mSUGRA boundary conditions we calculate the resulting supersymmetric mass spectra at the electro-weak scale using full 2-loop renormalization group equations. We show that the resulting spectrum can be quite different compared to the usual mSUGRA spectrum. We discuss how this might be used to obtain information on the seesaw scale from mass measurements. Constraints on the model space due to limits on lepton flavour violating decays are discussed. The main constraints come from the bounds on the decay mu to e and gamma but there are also regions where the decay tau to mu and gamma gives stronger constraints. We also calculate the regions allowed by the dark matter constraint. For the sake of completeness, we compare our results with those for the supersymmetric seesaw type-II and, to some extent, with type-I.

The Hunt for New Physics at the Large Hadron Collider

The Large Hadron Collider presents an unprecedented opportunity to probe the realm of new physics in the TeV region and shed light on some of the core unresolved issues of particle physics. These include the nature of electroweak symmetry breaking, the origin of mass, the possible constituent of cold dark matter, new sources of CP violation needed to explain the baryon excess in the universe, the possible existence of extra gauge groups and extra matter, and importantly the path Nature chooses to resolve the hierarchy problem - is it supersymmetry or extra dimensions. Many models of new physics beyond the standard model contain a hidden sector which can be probed at the LHC. Additionally, the LHC will be a top factory and accurate measurements of the properties of the top and its rare decays will provide a window to new physics. Further, the LHC could shed light on the origin of neutralino masses if the new physics associated with their generation lies in the TeV region. Finally, the LHC is also a laboratory to test the hypothesis of TeV scale strings and D-brane models. An overview of these possibilities is presented in the spirit that it will serve as a companion to the Technical Design Reports (TDRs) by the particle detector groups ATLAS and CMS to facilitate the test of the new theoretical ideas at the LHC. Which of these ideas stands the test of the LHC data will govern the course of particle physics in the subsequent decades.

FCNC and CP Violation Observables in a SU(3)-flavoured MSSM

A non-Abelian flavour symmetry in a minimal supersymmetric standard model can explain the flavour structures in the Yukawa couplings and simultaneously solve the SUSY flavour problem. Similarly the SUSY CP problem can be solved if CP is spontaneously broken in the flavour sector. In this work, we present an explicit example of these statements with a SU(3) flavour symmetry and spontaneous CP violation. In addition, we show that it is still possible to find some significant deviation from the SM expectations as far as FCNC and CP violation are concerned. We find that large contributions can be expected in lepton flavour violating decays, as $μ\to e γ$ and $τ\to μγ$, electric dipole moments, $d_e$ and $d_n$ and kaon CP violating processes as $ε_K$. Thus, these flavoured MSSM realizations are phenomenologically sensitive to the experimental searches in the realm of flavor and CP vioation physics.

Majoron emission in muon and tau decays revisited

In models where the breaking of lepton number is spontaneous a massless Goldstone boson, the Majoron ($J$), appears. We calculate the theoretically allowed range for the branching ratios of Majoron emitting charged lepton decays, such as Br($μ\to e J$) and Br($μ\to e J γ$), in a supersymmetric model with spontaneous breaking of R-parity. Br($μ\to eJ$) is maximal in the same region of parameter space for which the lightest neutralino decays mainly invisibly. A measurement of Br($μ\to eJ$) thus potentially provides information on R-parity violation complementary to accelerator searches. We also briefly discuss existing bounds and prospects for future improvements on the Majoron coupling to charged leptons.

SU(3) Flavour Symmetries and CP Violation

In order to satisfy current FCNC and CP violation bounds, SUSY flavour structures cannot be generic. An interesting solution to these SUSY Flavour and CP Problems lies on the use of an SU(3) family symmetry which spontaneously breaks CP symmetry. Typical observables of such a model are electric dipole moments and LFV processes. In addition, these models can give contributions to CP violation in neutral meson mixing. We show how the latter can be used to restrict the allowed SUSY parameter space, and induce correlations between LFV and EDM predictions.

R-parity violating sneutrino decays

R-parity can be violated through either bilinear and/or trilinear terms in the superpotential. The decay properties of sneutrinos can be used to obtain information about the relative importance of these couplings provided sneutrinos are the lightest supersymmetric particles. This report shows the paramount role of polarized beams and summarizes the benefits obtained from polarizing the positron beam, as well as the electron beam. The physics case for this option is illustrated explicitly by analyzing reference reactions in different physics scenarios. The results show that positron polarization, combined with the clean experimental environment provided by the linear collider, allows to improve strongly the potential of searches for new particles and the identification of their dynamics, which opens the road to resolve shortcomings of the Standard Model. The report also presents an overview of possible designs for polarizing both beams at the ILC, as well as for measuring their polarization.

Physics Interplay of the LHC and the ILC

Physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the International e+e- Linear Collider (ILC) will be complementary in many respects, as has been demonstrated at previous generations of hadron and lepton colliders. This report addresses the possible interplay between the LHC and ILC in testing the Standard Model and in discovering and determining the origin of new physics. Mutual benefits for the physics programme at both machines can occur both at the level of a combined interpretation of Hadron Collider and Linear Collider data and at the level of combined analyses of the data, where results obtained at one machine can directly influence the way analyses are carried out at the other machine. Topics under study comprise the physics of weak and strong electroweak symmetry breaking, supersymmetric models, new gauge theories, models with extra dimensions, and electroweak and QCD precision physics. The status of the work that has been carried out within the LHC / LC Study Group so far is summarised in this report. Possible topics for future studies are outlined.

Top Squarks and Bottom Squarks in the MSSM with Complex Parameters

We present a phenomenological study of top squarks (~t_1,2) and bottom squarks (~b_1,2) in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with complex parameters A_t, A_b, μand M_1. In particular we focus on the CP phase dependence of the branching ratios of (~t_1,2) and (~b_1,2) decays. We give the formulae of the two-body decay widths and present numerical results. We find that the effect of the phases on the (~t_1,2) and (~b_1,2) decays can be quite significant in a large region of the MSSM parameter space. This could have important implications for (~t_1,2) and (~b_1,2) searches and the MSSM parameter determination in future collider experiments. We have also estimated the accuracy expected in the determination of the parameters of ~t_i and ~b_i by a global fit of the measured masses, decay branching ratios and production cross sections at e^+ e^- linear colliders with polarized beams. Analysing two scenarios, we find that the fundamental parameters apart from A_t and A_b can be determined with errors of 1% to 2%, assuming an integrated luminosity of 1 ab^-1 and a sufficiently large c.m.s. energy to produce also the heavier ~t_2 and ~b_2 states. The parameter A_t can be determined with an error of 2 - 3%, whereas the error on A_b is likely to be of the order of 50%.

Effect of supersymmetric phases on lepton dipole moments and rare lepton decays

We study the effect of SUSY phases on rare decays of leptons and on their magnetic and electric dipole moments. We consider the most general mass matrices for sleptons within the MSSM including left--right mixing, flavour mixing and complex phases. We show that the phases also affect CP even observables. Moreover, we demonstrate that contrary to common belief the phase of mu can be large even for slepton masses as small as 200 GeV provided the lepton flavour violating parameters are complex.

Impact of CP phases on stop and sbottom searches

We study the decays of top squarks (stop_{1,2}) and bottom squarks (sbottom_{1,2}) in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with complex parameters A_t, A_b, mu and M_1. We show that including the corresponding phases substantially affects the branching ratios of stop_{1,2} and sbottom_{1,2} decays in a large domain of the MSSM parameter space. We find that the branching ratios can easily change by a factor of 2 and more when varying the phases. This could have an important impact on the search for stop_{1,2} and sbottom_{1,2} and the determination of the MSSM parameters at future colliders.

Neutrino properties and the decay of the lightest supersymmetric particle

Supersymmetry with broken R-parity can explain the neutrino mass squared differences and mixing angles observed in neutrino oscillation experiments. In the minimal model, where R-parity is broken only by bilinear terms, certain decay properties of the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) are correlated with neutrino mixing angles. Here we consider charginos, squarks, gluinos and sneutrinos being the LSP and calculate their decay properties in bilinear R-parity breaking supersymmetry. Together with the decays of charged scalars and neutralinos calculated previously this completes the proof that bilinear R-parity breaking as the source of neutrino masses will be testable at future colliders. Moreover, we argue that in case of GMSB, the decays of the NLSP can be used to test the model.

Non-diagonal flavour observables in B and Collider Physics

Until now the focus within the direct search for supersymmetry has mainly been on flavour diagonal observables. Recently lepton flavour violating signals at future electron positron colliders have been studied. There is now an opportunity to analyse the relations between collider observables and low-energy observables in the hadronic sector. In a first work in this direction, we study flavour violation in the squark decays of the second and third generations taking into account results from B physics, in particular from the rare decay b ->s gamma. Correlations between various squark decay modes can be used to get more precise information on various flavour violating parameters.

Physics Impact of a Precise Determination of the Top Quark Mass at an e+e- Linear Collider

At a prospective e+e- Linear Collider (LC) a very precise determination of the top quark mass with an accuracy of $δm_t <= 100 MeV$ will be possible. This is to be compared with the envisaged accuracy of $δm_t = 1-2 GeV$ at the Tevatron and the LHC. We discuss the physics impact of such a precise determination of m_t, focusing on the Standard Model (SM) and its minimal supersymmetric extension (MSSM). In particular, we show the importance of a precise knowledge of m_t for electroweak precision observables, and for Higgs physics and the scalar top sector of the MSSM. Taking the mSUGRA model as a specific example, we furthermore demonstrate the importance of a precise m_t value for the prediction of sparticle masses and for constraints on the parameter space allowed by the relic density. The uncertainty in m_t also significantly affects the reconstruction of the supersymmetric high scale theory. We find that going from hadron collider to LC accuracy in m_t leads to an improvement of the investigated quantities by up to an order of magnitude.

Solar Neutrino Masses and Mixing from Bilinear R-Parity Broken Supersymmetry: Analytical versus Numerical Results

We give an analytical calculation of solar neutrino masses and mixing at one-loop order within bilinear R-parity breaking supersymmetry, and compare our results to the exact numerical calculation. Our method is based on a systematic perturbative expansion of R-parity violating vertices to leading order. We find in general quite good agreement between approximate and full numerical calculation, but the approximate expressions are much simpler to implement. Our formalism works especially well for the case of the large mixing angle MSW solution (LMA-MSW), now strongly favoured by the recent KamLAND reactor neutrino data.

Theoretical uncertainties in sparticle mass predictions from computational tools

We estimate the current theoretical uncertainty in sparticle mass predictions by comparing several state-of-the-art computations within the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). We find that the theoretical uncertainty is comparable to the expected statistical errors from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and significantly larger than those expected from a future e+e- Linear Collider (LC). We quantify the theoretical uncertainty on relevant sparticle observables for both LHC and LC, and show that the value of the error is significantly dependent upon the supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking parameters. We also present the theoretical uncertainty induced in fundamental-scale SUSY breaking parameters when they are fitted from LHC measurements. Two regions of the SUSY parameter space where accurate predictions are particularly difficult are examined in detail: the large tan(beta) and focus point regimes.

Impact of CP phases on the search for sleptons tau and nu_tau

We study the decays of the tau-sleptons (stau_{1,2}) and tau-sneutrino (snu_tau) in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with complex parameters A_tau, mu and M_1 (U(1) gaugino mass). We show that the effect of the CP phases of these parameters on the branching ratios of stau_{1,2} and snu_tau decays can be quite strong in a large region of the MSSM parameter space. This could have an important impact on the search for stau_{1,2} and snu_tau and the determination of the MSSM parameters at future colliders.

New physics searches at a Linear Collider with polarized beams

A future e+e- Linear Collider has a large physics potential for the discovery of new physics beyond the Standard Model and precision studies of the Standard Model itself. It is well suited to complement and extend the physics program of the LHC concerning the precise determination of the underlying theory. The use of polarized beams at a LC will be one of the decisive tools.

Selectron Pair Production at e-e- and e+e- Colliders with Polarized Beams

We investigate selectron pair production and decay in e-e- scattering and e+e- annihilation with polarized beams taking into account neutralino mixing as well as ISR and beamstrahlung corrections. One of the main advantages of having both modes at disposal is their complementarity concerning the threshold behaviour of selectron pair production. In e-e- the cross sections at threshold for seleectron_R selectron_R and selectron_L selectron_L rise proportional to the momentum of the selectron and in e+ e- that for selectron_R selectron_L. Measurements at threshold with polarized beams can be used to determine the selectron masses precisely. Moreover we discuss how polarized electron and positron beams can be used to establish directly the weak quantum numbers of the selectrons. We also use selectron pair production to determine the gaugino mass parameter M_1. This is of particular interest for scenarios with non-universal gaugino masses at a high scale resulting in |M_1| << |M_2| at the electroweak scale. Moreover, we consider also the case of a non-vanishing selectron mixing and demonstrate that it leads to a significant change in the phenomenology of selectrons.

The decays gluino -> stop_1 b-quark W and gluino -> stop_1 c-quark and phenomenological implications in supersymmetric theories

We show that the decay gluino -> stop_1 b-quark W is important and can even be dominant in the region of parameter space where it is kinematically allowed. We discuss phenomenological implications within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and models with broken R-parity. We consider the flavour diagonal case as well as a possible mixing between squarks of different generations. In the latter case also the decay gluino -> stop_1 c-quark is potentially important. We show that the decay gluino -> stop_1 b-quark W is sensitive to the stop mixing angle. Furthermore we demonstrate that in scenarios with a higgsino--like LSP the gluino decays mainly into final states containing top quarks or a light stop if allowed by kinematics.

The Reconstruction of Supersymmetric Theories at High Energy Scales

The reconstruction of fundamental parameters in supersymmetric theories requires the evolution to high scales, where the characteristic regularities in mechanisms of supersymmetry breaking become manifest. We have studied a set of representative examples in this context: minimal supergravity and a left--right symmetric extension; gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking; and superstring effective field theories. Through the evolution of the parameters from the electroweak scale the regularities in different scenarios at the high scales can be unravelled if precision analyses of the supersymmetric particle sector at e+ e- linear colliders are combined with analyses at the LHC.

General Flavor Blind MSSM and CP Violation

We study the implications on flavor changing neutral current and CP violating processes in the context of supersymmetric theories without a new flavor structure (flavor blind supersymmetry). The low energy parameters are determined by the running of the soft breaking terms from the grand unified scale with SUSY phases consistent with the EDM constraints. We find that the CP asymmetry in b --> s gamma can reach large values potentially measurable at B factories, especially in the low BR(b --> s gamma) region. We perform a fit of the unitarity triangle including all the relevant observables. In this case, no sizeable deviations from the SM expectations are found. Finally we analyze the SUSY contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon pointing out its impact on the b --> s gamma CP asymmetry and on the SUSY spectrum including chargino and stop masses.

Neutrino Masses and Mixings from Supersymmetry with Bilinear R--Parity Violation: A Theory for Solar and Atmospheric Neutrino Oscillations

The simplest unified extension of the MSSM with bi-linear R--Parity violation naturally predicts a hierarchical neutrino mass spectrum, in which one neutrino acquires mass by mixing with neutralinos, while the other two get mass radiatively. We have performed a full one-loop calculation of the neutralino-neutrino mass matrix in the bi-linear \rp MSSM, taking special care to achieve a manifestly gauge invariant calculation. Moreover we have performed the renormalization of the heaviest neutrino, needed in order to get meaningful results. The atmospheric mass scale and maximal mixing angle arise from tree-level physics, while solar neutrino scale and oscillations follow from calculable one-loop corrections. If universal supergravity assumptions are made on the soft-supersymmetry breaking terms then the atmospheric scale is calculable as a function of a single \rp violating parameter by the renormalization group evolution due to the non-zero bottom quark Yukawa coupling. The solar neutrino problem must be accounted for by the small mixing angle (SMA) MSW solution. If these assumptions are relaxed then one can implement large mixing angle solutions, either MSW or just-so. The theory predicts the lightest supersymmetic particle (LSP) decay to be observable at high-energy colliders, despite the smallness of neutrino masses indicated by experiment. This provides an independent way to test this solution of the atmospheric and solar neutrino anomalies.

Electron and Neutron Electric Dipole Moments in the Constrained MSSM

We analyze the effects of CP-violating phases on the electric dipole moment (EDM) of electron and neutron in the constrained minimal supersymmetric model. We find that the phases phi_μ and phi_{A_0} have to be strongly correlated, in particular for small values of the SUSY mass parameters. We calculate the neutron EDM in two different models, the Quark-Parton Model and the Chiral Quark Model. It turns out that the predictions are quite sensitive to the model used. We show parameter regions in the M_0-M_1/2 plane which are excluded by considering simultaneously the experimental bounds of both electron and neutron EDM, assuming specific values for the phases phi_μ and phi_{A_0}.

Impact of bosonic decays on the search for stau_2 and tau-sneutrino

We perform a detailed study of the decays of the heavier tau slepton (stau_2) and tau-sneutrino (snu_tau) in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We show that the decays into Higgs or gauge bosons, i.e. stau_2 -> stau_1 + (h^0, H^0, A^0 or Z^0), stau_2 -> snu_tau + (H^- or W^-), and snu_tau -> stau_1 + (H^+ or W^+), can be very important due to the sizable tau Yukawa coupling and large mixing parameters of stau. Compared to the decays into fermions, such as stau_2 -> tau + neutralino_i and stau_2 -> nu_tau + chargino_j^-, these bosonic decay modes can have significantly different decay distributions. This could have an important influence on the search for stau_2 and snu_tau and the determination of the MSSM parameters at future colliders.

Bosonic decays of stop_2 and sbottom_2

We perform a detailed study of the decays of the heavier top and bottom squarks (stop_2 and sbottom_2) in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We show that the decays into Higgs or gauge bosons can be dominant in a wide range of the model parameters due to the large Yukawa couplings and mixings of stops and sbottoms. Compared to the conventional decays into fermions these bosonic decay modes can have significantly different decay structures and distributions. This could have an important impact on the search for stop_2 and sbottom_2 and the determination of the MSSM parameters at future colliders.

SUSY-QCD corrections to stop and sbottom decays into Higgs bosons

We calculate the order(α_s) SUSY-QCD corrections to the widths of stop and sbottom decays into Higgs bosons within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We give the complete analytical formulae paying particular attention to the on-shell renormalization of the soft SUSY-breaking parameters. We also perform a detailed numerical analysis of both stop and sbottom decays into all Higgs bosons h^0, H^0, A^0, and H^\pm. We find that the SUSY-QCD corrections are significant, mostly negative and of the order of a few ten percent.

We study the stop discovery potential for $\sqrt{s} = 500 GeV$ and $10 \fb^{-1}$ integrated luminosity for polarized e^- beams. SUSY-QCD corrections to stop and sbottom decays into W and Z bosons

We calculate the supersymmetric ${\cal O}(α_s)$ QCD corrections to stop and sbottom decays into vector bosons within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Higher Order Top Squark Decays

Within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model we study the three body decay of the lighter top squark into a b-quark, a W-boson and the lightest neutralino and compare this decay with the flavour changing two body decay of the lighter top squark into a c-quark and the lightest neutralino. We do this for scenarios where two body decays at tree level are forbidden for the light top squark. We give the complete analysis for the three body and compare it with the mentioned two body decay. SUSY--QCD corrections to scalar quark decays into charginos and neutralinos

We calculate the supersymmetric QCD corrections in order $α_s$ to the decays $\squark_i \to q' \chargino_j$ (i,j = 1,2) and $\squark_i \to q \neutralino_k$ (k = 1,...4) within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. In particular we consider the decays of squarks of the third generation, $\stop_i$ and $\sbottom_i$ (i = 1,2), where the left--right mixing must be taken into account. The corrections turn out to be of about 10\%, except for higgsino--like charginos or neutralinos, where they can go up to 40\%.
