Isobaric multiplet mass equation in the A=31A=31 T=3/2T = 3/2 quartets

The observed mass excesses of analog nuclear states with the same mass number AA and isospin TT can be used to test the isobaric multiplet mass equation (IMME), which has, in most cases, been validated to a high degree of precision. A recent measurement [Kankainen et al., Phys. Rev. C 93 041304(R) (2016)] of the ground-state mass of 31^{31}Cl led to a substantial breakdown of the IMME for the lowest A=31,T=3/2A = 31, T = 3/2 quartet. The second-lowest A=31,T=3/2A = 31, T = 3/2 quartet is not complete, due to uncertainties associated with the identity of the 31^{31}S member state. Using a fast 31^{31}Cl beam implanted into a plastic scintillator and a high-purity Ge γγ-ray detection array, γγ rays from the 31^{31}Cl(βγ)(βγ)31^{31}S sequence were measured. Shell-model calculations using USDB and the recently-developed USDE interactions were performed for comparison. Isospin mixing between the 31^{31}S isobaric analog state (IAS) at 6279.0(6) keV and a nearby state at 6390.2(7) keV was observed. The second T=3/2T = 3/2 state in 31^{31}S was observed at Ex=7050.0(8)E_x = 7050.0(8) keV. Isospin mixing in 31^{31}S does not by itself explain the IMME breakdown in the lowest quartet, but it likely points to similar isospin mixing in the mirror nucleus 31^{31}P, which would result in a perturbation of the 31^{31}P IAS energy. USDB and USDE calculations both predict candidate 31^{31}P states responsible for the mixing in the energy region slightly above Ex=6400E_x = 6400 keV. The second quartet has been completed thanks to the identification of the second 31^{31}S T=3/2T = 3/2 state, and the IMME is validated in this quartet.

Isospin Mixing Reveals 30^{30}P(p,γp,γ)31^{31}S Resonance Influencing Nova Nucleosynthesis

The thermonuclear 30^{30}P(p,γp,γ)31^{31}S reaction rate is critical for modeling the final elemental and isotopic abundances of ONe nova nucleosynthesis, which affect the calibration of proposed nova thermometers and the identification of presolar nova grains, respectively. Unfortunately, the rate of this reaction is essentially unconstrained experimentally, because the strengths of key 31^{31}S proton capture resonance states are not known, largely due to uncertainties in their spins and parities. Using the ββ decay of 31^{31}Cl, we have observed the ββ-delayed γγ decay of a 31^{31}S state at Ex=6390.2(7)E_x = 6390.2(7) keV, with a 30^{30}P(p,γp,γ)31^{31}S resonance energy of Er=259.3(8)E_r = 259.3(8) keV, in the middle of the 30^{30}P(p,γp,γ)31^{31}S Gamow window for peak nova temperatures. This state exhibits isospin mixing with the nearby isobaric analog state (IAS) at Ex=6279.0(6)E_x = 6279.0(6) keV, giving it an unambiguous spin and parity of 3/2+3/2^+ and making it an important l=0l = 0 resonance for proton capture on 30^{30}P.

Revalidation of the isobaric multiplet mass equation for the A=20A=20 quintet

An unexpected breakdown of the isobaric multiplet mass equation in the A=20A=20, T=2T=2 quintet was recently reported, presenting a challenge to modern theories of nuclear structure. In the present work, the excitation energy of the lowest T=2T = 2 state in 20^{20}Na has been measured to be 6498.4±0.2stat±0.4syst6498.4 \pm 0.2_{\textrm{stat}} \pm 0.4_{\textrm{syst}} keV by using the superallowed 0+→0+0^+ \rightarrow 0^+ beta decay of 20^{20}Mg to access it and an array of high-purity germanium detectors to detect its γγ-ray deexcitation. This value differs by 27 keV (1.9 standard deviations) from the recommended value of 6525±146525 \pm 14 keV and is a factor of 28 more precise. The isobaric multiplet mass equation is shown to be revalidated when the new value is adopted.

Spin-Imbalanced Quasi-Two-Dimensional Fermi Gases

We measure the density profiles for a Fermi gas of 6^6Li containing N1N_1 spin-up atoms and N2N_2 spin-down atoms, confined in a quasi-two-dimensional geometry. The spatial profiles are measured as a function of spin-imbalance N2/N1N_2/N_1 and interaction strength, which is controlled by means of a collisional (Feshbach) resonance. The measured cloud radii and central densities are in disagreement with mean-field Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory for a true two-dimensional system. We find that the data for normal-fluid mixtures are reasonably well fit by a simple two-dimensional polaron model of the free energy. Not predicted by the model is a phase transition to a spin-balanced central core, which is observed above a critical value of N2/N1N_2/N_1. Our observations provide important benchmarks for predictions of the phase structure of quasi-two-dimensional Fermi gases.

Polarons in the radio-frequency spectrum of a quasi-two-dimensional Fermi gas

We measure radio-frequency spectra for a two-component mixture of a 6^6Li atomic Fermi gas in the quasi-two-dimensional regime. Near the Feshbach resonance, where the transverse Fermi energy is large compared to the confinement-induced dimer binding energies for the initial and final states, we find that the observed resonances do not correspond to transitions between confinement-induced dimers. The spectrum appears to be well-described by transitions between noninteracting polaron states in two dimensions.
