Study of β\boldsymbolβ Decay Shape Factors in First-Forbidden Transitions with ΔIπ=0−\boldsymbol{ΔI^π= 0^-} for Reactor Antineutrino Spectra Predictions

The electron spectra of the ββ decays of 92^{92}Rb and 142^{142}Cs, key contributors to the reactor antineutrino spectrum, were measured at the IGISOL facility using radioactive beams of high isotopic purity. The shapes of the measured ββ spectra were compared with various ββ shape models, including first-forbidden correction factors for ΔIπ=0−ΔI^π= 0^- ground-state to ground-state transitions. Comparisons with previous experimental results are also provided. The shapes of the newly measured ββ spectra are well reproduced employing feedings extracted from total absorption gamma spectroscopy measurements.

Beta decay of the very neutron-deficient 60^{60}Ge and 62^{62}Ge nuclei

We report here the results of a study of the ββ decay of the proton-rich Ge isotopes, 60^{60}Ge and 62^{62}Ge, produced in an experiment at the RIKEN Nishina Center. We have improved our knowledge of the half-lives of 62^{62}Ge (73.5(1) ms), 60^{60}Ge (25.0(3) ms) and its daughter nucleus, 60^{60}Ga (69.4(2) ms). We measured individual ββ-delayed proton and γγ emissions and their related branching ratios. Decay schemes and absolute Fermi and Gamow-Teller transition strengths have been determined. The mass excesses of the nuclei under study have been deduced. A total ββ-delayed proton-emission branching ratio of 67(3)% has been obtained for 60^{60}Ge. New information has been obtained on the energy levels populated in 60^{60}Ga and on the 1/2−^- excited state in the βpβp daughter 59^{59}Zn. We extracted a ground state to ground state feeding of 85.3(3)% for the decay of 62^{62}Ge. Eight new γγ lines have been added to the de-excitation of levels populated in the 62^{62}Ga daughter.

Total absorption γγ-ray spectroscopy of the ββ decays of 96gs,m^{96\text{gs,m}}Y

The ββ decays of the ground state (gs) and isomeric state (m) of 96^{96}Y have been studied with the total absorption γγ-ray spectroscopy technique at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility. The separation of the 8+^{+} isomeric state from the 0−^{-} ground state was achieved thanks to the purification capabilities of the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap system. The ββ-intensity distributions of both decays have been independently determined. In the analyses the de-excitation of the 1581.6 keV level in 96^{96}Zr, in which conversion electron emission competes with pair production, has been carefully considered and found to have significant impact on the ββ-detector efficiency, influencing the ββ-intensity distribution obtained. Our results for 96gs^{96\text{gs}}Y (0+^+) confirm the large ground state to ground state ββ-intensity probability, although a slightly larger value than reported in previous studies was obtained, amounting to 96.6−2.1+0.3%96.6_{-2.1}^{+0.3}\% of the total ββ intensity. Given that the decay of 96gs^{96\text{gs}}Y is the second most important contributor to the reactor antineutrino spectrum between 5 and 7 MeV, the impact of the present results on reactor antineutrino summation calculations has been evaluated. In the decay of 96m^{96\text{m}}Y (8+^{+}), previously undetected ββ intensity in transitions to states above 6 MeV has been observed. This shows the importance of total absorption γγ-ray spectroscopy measurements of ββ decays with highly fragmented de-excitation patterns. 96m^{96\text{m}}Y (8+^{+}) is a major contributor to reactor decay heat in uranium-plutonium and thorium-uranium fuels around 10 s after fission pulses, and the newly measured average ββ and γγ energies differ significantly from the previous values in evaluated databases (...)

Determination of Beta Decay Ground State Feeding of Nuclei of Importance for Reactor Applications

In ββ-decay studies the determination of the decay probability to the ground state of the daughter nucleus often suffers from large systematic errors. The difficulty of the measurement is related to the absence of associated delayed γγ-ray emission. In this work we revisit the 4πγ−β4πγ-β method proposed by Greenwood and collaborators in the 1990s, which has the potential to overcome some of the experimental difficulties. Our interest is driven by the need to determine accurately the ββ-intensity distributions of fission products that contribute significantly to the reactor decay heat and to the antineutrinos emitted by reactors. A number of such decays have large ground state branches. The method is relevant for nuclear structure studies as well. Pertinent formulae are revised and extended to the special case of ββ-delayed neutron emitters, and the robustness of the method is demonstrated with synthetic data. We apply it to a number of measured decays that serve as test cases and discuss the features of the method. Finally, we obtain ground state feeding intensities with reduced uncertainty for four relevant decays that will allow future improvements in antineutrino spectrum and decay heat calculations using the summation method.

Beta decay of the exotic TzT_z = -2 nuclei 48^{48}Fe, 52^{52}Ni and 56^{56}Zn

The results of a study of the beta decays of three proton-rich nuclei with Tz=-2T_z=\text{-}2, namely 48^{48}Fe, 52^{52}Ni and 56^{56}Zn, produced in an experiment carried out at GANIL, are reported. In all three cases we have extracted the half-lives and the total ββ-delayed proton emission branching ratios. We have measured the individual ββ-delayed protons and ββ-delayed γγ rays and the branching ratios of the corresponding levels. Decay schemes have been determined for the three nuclei, and new energy levels are identified in the daughter nuclei. Competition between ββ-delayed protons and γγ rays is observed in the de-excitation of the T=2T=2 Isobaric Analogue States in all three cases. Absolute Fermi and Gamow-Teller transition strengths have been determined. The mass excesses of the nuclei under study have been deduced. In addition, we discuss in detail the data analysis taking as a test case 56^{56}Zn, where the exotic ββ-delayed γγ-proton decay has been observed.

Competition of ββ-delayed protons and ββ-delayed γγ rays in 56^{56}Zn and the exotic ββ-delayed γγ-proton decay

Remarkable results have been published recently on the ββ decay of 56^{56}Zn. In particular, the rare and exotic ββ-delayed γγ-proton emission has been detected for the first time in the fpfp shell. Here we focus the discussion on this exotic decay mode and on the observed competition between ββ-delayed protons and ββ-delayed γγ rays from the Isobaric Analogue State.

New neutron-deficient isotopes from 78^{78}Kr fragmentation

In an experiment with the BigRIPS separator at the RIKEN Nishina Center, the fragmentation of a 78^{78}Kr beam allowed the observation of new neutron-deficient isotopes at the proton drip-line. Clean identification spectra could be produced and 63^{63}Se, 67^{67}Kr, and 68^{68}Kr were identified for the first time. In addition, 59^{59}Ge was also observed. Three of these isotopes, 59^{59}Ge, 63^{63}Se, and 67^{67}Kr, are potential candidates for ground-state two-proton radioactivity. In addition, the isotopes 58^{58}Ge, 62^{62}Se, and 66^{66}Kr were also sought but without success. The present experiment also allowed the determination of production cross sections for some of the most exotic isotopes. These measurements confirm the trend already observed that the empirical parameterization of fragmentation cross sections, EPAX, significantly overestimates experimental cross sections in this mass region.

Observation of the 2+^+ isomer in 52^{52}Co

We report the first observation of the 2+^+ isomer in 52^{52}Co, produced in the ββ decay of the 0+^+, 52^{52}Ni ground state. We have observed three γγ-rays at 849, 1910, and 5185 keV characterizing the ββ de-excitation of the isomer. We have measured a half-life of 102(6) ms for the isomeric state. The Fermi and Gamow-Teller transition strengths for the ββ decay of 52m^{52m}Co to 52^{52}Fe have been determined. We also add new information on the ββ decay of the 6+^+, 52^{52}Co ground state, for which we have measured a half-life of 112(3) ms.

Competition between ββ-delayed proton and ββ-delayed γγ decay of the exotic TzT_z = -2 nucleus 56^{56}Zn and fragmentation of the IAS

A very exotic decay mode at the proton drip-line, ββ-delayed γγ-proton decay, has been observed in the ββ decay of the TzT_z = -2 nucleus 56^{56}Zn. Three γγ-proton sequences have been observed following the ββ decay. The fragmentation of the IAS in 56^{56}Cu has also been observed for the first time. The results were reported in a recent publication. At the time of publication the authors were puzzled by the competition between proton and γγ decays from the main component of the IAS. Here we outline a possible explanation based on the nuclear structure properties of the three nuclei involved, namely 56^{56}Zn, 56^{56}Cu and 55^{55}Ni, close to the doubly magic nucleus 56^{56}Ni. From the fragmentation of the Fermi strength and the excitation energy of the two populated 0+^{+} states we could deduce the off-diagonal matrix element of the charge-dependent part of the Hamiltonian responsible for the mixing. These results are compared with the decay of 55^{55}Cu with one proton less than 56^{56}Zn. For completeness we summarise the results already published.

Enhanced Gamma-Ray Emission from Neutron Unbound States Populated in Beta Decay

Total absorption spectroscopy was used to investigate the beta-decay intensity to states above the neutron separation energy followed by gamma-ray emission in 87,88Br and 94Rb. Accurate results were obtained thanks to a careful control of systematic errors. An unexpectedly large gamma intensity was observed in all three cases extending well beyond the excitation energy region where neutron penetration is hindered by low neutron energy. The gamma branching as a function of excitation energy was compared to Hauser-Feshbach model calculations. For 87Br and 88Br the gamma branching reaches 57% and 20% respectively, and could be explained as a nuclear structure effect. Some of the states populated in the daughter can only decay through the emission of a large orbital angular momentum neutron with a strongly reduced barrier penetrability. In the case of neutron-rich 94Rb the observed 4.5% branching is much larger than the calculations performed with standard nuclear statistical model parameters, even after proper correction for fluctuation effects on individual transition widths. The difference can be reconciled introducing an enhancement of one order-of-magnitude in the photon strength to neutron strength ratio. An increase in the photon strength function of such magnitude for very neutron-rich nuclei, if it proved to be correct, leads to a similar increase in the (n,gamma) cross section that would have an impact on r-process abundance calculations.

First measurement of several ββ-delayed neutron emitting isotopes beyond N=126

The ββ-delayed neutron emission probabilities of neutron rich Hg and Tl nuclei have been measured together with ββ-decay half-lives for 20 isotopes of Au, Hg, Tl, Pb and Bi in the mass region N≳\gtrsim126. These are the heaviest species where neutron emission has been observed so far. These measurements provide key information to evaluate the performance of nuclear microscopic and phenomenological models in reproducing the high-energy part of the ββ-decay strength distribution. In doing so, it provides important constraints to global theoretical models currently used in rr-process nucleosynthesis.

Shapes of the 192,190^{192,190}Pb ground states from beta decay studies using the total absorption technique

The beta decay of 192,190^{192,190}Pb has been studied using the total absorption technique at the ISOLDE(CERN) facility. The beta-decay strength deduced from the measurements, combined with QRPA theoretical calculations, allow us to infer that the ground states of the 192,190^{192,190}Pb isotopes are spherical. These results represent the first application of the shape determination method using the total absorption technique for heavy nuclei and in a region where there is considerable interest in nuclear shapes and shape effects.

Total Absorption Spectroscopy Study of 92^{92}Rb Decay: A Major Contributor to Reactor Antineutrino Spectrum Shape

The antineutrino spectra measured in recent experiments at reactors are inconsistent with calculations based on the conversion of integral beta spectra recorded at the ILL reactor. 92^{92}Rb makes the dominant contribution to the reactor spectrum in the 5-8 MeV range but its decay properties are in question. We have studied 92^{92}Rb decay with total absorption spectroscopy. Previously unobserved beta feeding was seen in the 4.5-5.5 region and the GS to GS feeding was found to be 87.5(25)%. The impact on the reactor antineutrino spectra calculated with the summation method is shown and discussed.

Observation of the ββ-delayed γγ-proton decay of 56^{56}Zn and its impact on the Gamow Teller strength evaluation

We report the observation of a very exotic decay mode at the proton drip-line, the ββ-delayed γγ-proton decay, clearly seen in the ββ decay of the TzT_z = -2 nucleus 56^{56}Zn. Three γγ-proton sequences have been observed after the ββ decay. Here this decay mode, already observed in the sdsd-shell, is seen for the first time in the fpfp-shell. Both γγ and proton decays have been taken into account in the estimation of the Fermi (F) and Gamow Teller (GT) strengths. Evidence for fragmentation of the Fermi strength due to strong isospin mixing is found.

Re-publication of the data from the BILL magnetic spectrometer: The cumulative ββ spectra of the fission products of 235^{235}U, 239^{239}Pu, and 241^{241}Pu

In the 1980s, measurements of the cumulative ββ spectra of the fission products following the thermal neutron induced fission of 235^{235}U, 239^{239}Pu, and 241^{241}Pu were performed at the magnetic spectrometer BILL at the ILL in Grenoble. This data was published in bins of 250 keV. In this paper, we re-publish the original data in a binning of 50 keV for 235^{235}U and 100 keV for 239^{239}Pu and 241^{241}Pu.

Approaching the precursor nuclei of the third r-process peak with RIBs

The rapid neutron nucleosynthesis process involves an enormous amount of very exotic neutron-rich nuclei, which represent a theoretical and experimental challenge. Two of the main decay properties that affect the final abundance distribution the most are half-lives and neutron branching ratios. Using fragmentation of a primary 238^{238}U beam at GSI we were able to measure such properties for several neutron-rich nuclei from 208^{208}Hg to 218^{218}Pb. This contribution provides a short update on the status of the data analysis of this experiment, together with a compilation of the latest results published in this mass region, both experimental and theoretical. The impact of the uncertainties connected with the beta-decay rates and with beta-delayed neutron emission is illustrated on the basis of rr-process network calculations. In order to obtain a reasonable reproduction of the third rr-process peak, it is expected that both half-lives and neutron branching ratios are substantially smaller, than those based on FRDM+QRPA, commonly used in rr-process model calculations. Further measurements around N∼126N\sim126 are required for a reliable modelling of the underlying nuclear structure, and for performing more realistic rr-process abundance calculations.

Core-coupled states and split proton-neutron quasi-particle multiplets in 122-126Ag

Neutron-rich silver isotopes were populated in the fragmentation of a 136Xe beam and the relativistic fission of 238U. The fragments were mass analyzed with the GSI Fragment separator and subsequently implanted into a passive stopper. Isomeric transitions were detected by 105 HPGe detectors. Eight isomeric states were observed in 122-126Ag nuclei. The level schemes of 122,123,125Ag were revised and extended with isomeric transitions being observed for the first time. The excited states in the odd-mass silver isotopes are interpreted as core-coupled states. The isomeric states in the even-mass silver isotopes are discussed in the framework of the proton-neutron split multiplets. The results of shell-model calculations, performed for the most neutron-rich silver nuclei are compared to the experimental data.

Migration of nuclear shell gaps studied in the d(24Ne,p gamma)25Ne reaction

The transfer of neutrons onto 24Ne has been measured using a reaccelerated radioactive beam of 24Ne to study the (d,p) reaction in inverse kinematics. The unusual raising of the first 3/2+ level in 25Ne and its significance in terms of the migration of the neutron magic number from N=20 to N=16 is put on a firm footing by confirmation of this state's identity. The raised 3/2+ level is observed simultaneously with the intruder negative parity 7/2- and 3/2- levels, providing evidence for the reduction in the N=20 gap. The coincident gamma-ray decays allowed the assignment of spins as well as the transferred orbital angular momentum. The excitation energy of the 3/2+ state shows that the established USD shell model breaks down well within the sd model space and requires a revised treatment of the proton-neutron monopole interaction.

TIARA: a large solid angle silicon array for direct reaction studies with radioactive beams

A compact, quasi-4pi position sensitive silicon array, TIARA, designed to study direct reactions induced by radioactive beams in inverse kinematics is described here. The Transfer and Inelastic All-angle Reaction Array (TIARA) consists of 8 resistive charge division detectors forming an octagonal barrel around the target and a set of double-sided silicon-strip annular detectors positioned at each end of the barrel. The detector was coupled to the -ray array EXOGAM and the spectrometer VAMOS at the GANIL Laboratory to demonstrate the potential of such an apparatus with radioactive beams. The 14N(d,p)15N reaction, well known in direct kinematics, has been carried out in inverse kinematics for that purpose. The observation of the 15N ground state and excited states at 7.16 and 7.86 MeV is presented here as well as the comparison of the measured proton angular distributions with DWBA calculations. Transferred l-values are in very good agreement with both theoretical calculations and previous experimental results obtained in direct kinematics.

Spectroscopy of Neutron-Rich 168,170Dy: Yrast Band Evolution Close to the NpNn Valence Maximum

The yrast sequence of the neutron-rich dysprosium isotope 168Dy has been studied using multi-nucleon transfer reactions following collisions between a 460-MeV 82Se beam and a 170Er target. The reaction products were identified using the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer and the gamma rays detected using the CLARA HPGe-detector array. The 2+ and 4+ members of the previously measured ground state rotational band of 168Dy have been confirmed and the yrast band extended up to 10+. A tentative candidate for the 4+ to 2+ transition in 170Dy was also identified. The data on these nuclei and on the lighter even-even dysprosium isotopes are interpreted in terms of Total Routhian Surface calculations and the evolution of collectivity in the vicinity of the proton-neutron valence product maximum is discussed.
