Differential configurational entropy and the gravitational collapse of a kink

The gravitational instability of kinks is scrutinized in the context of information entropy, including the black hole formation near the scalar field critical collapse. The differential configurational entropy (DCE) is computed and examined for globally perturbed static kinks and the far-from-equilibrium kink solutions as well. In the case of the first kink, the DCE determines a critical value of the perturbation parameter regulating points of bifurcation that characterize a phase transition, whose supercritical range leads to collapse and subsequent black hole formation. For the far-from-equilibrium kink solutions, the DCE supports black hole formation.

Mass gap in the critical gravitational collapse of a kink

We study the gravitational collapse of a kink within spherical symmetry and the characteristic formulation of General Relativity. We explore some expected but elusive gravitational collapse issues which have not been studied before in detail, finding new features. The numerical one-parametric solution and the structure of the spacetime are calculated using finite differences, Galerkin collocation techniques, and some scripting for automated grid coverage. We study the threshold of black hole formation and confirm a mass gap in the phase transition. In the supercritical case we find a mass scaling power law $M_{BH}={M^*_{BH}}+K[λ-λ^*]^{2γ}+f(K[λ-λ^*]^{2γ})$, with $γ\approx 0.37$ independent of the initial data for the cases considered, and $M^*_{BH}$, $K$ and $λ^*$ each depending on the initial datum. The spacetime has a self-similar structure with a period of $Δ\approx 3.4$. In the subcritical case the Bondi mass at null infinity decays in cascade with $Δ/2$ interval as expected.

Conformally flat polytropes for anisotropic matter

We analyze in detail conformally flat spherically symmetric fluid distributions, satisfying a polytropic equation of state. Among the two possible families of relativistic polytropes, only one contains models which satisfy all the required physical conditions. The ensuing configurations are necessarily anisotropic and show interesting physical properties. Prospective applications of the presented models to the study of super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs, are discussed.

Extended two-dimensional characteristic framework to study nonrotating black holes

We develop a numerical solver, that extends the computational framework considered in [Phys. Rev. D 65, 084016 (2002)], to include scalar perturbations of nonrotating black holes. The nonlinear Einstein-Klein-Gordon equations for a massless scalar field minimally coupled to gravity are solved in two spatial dimensions (2D). The numerical procedure is based on the ingoing light cone formulation for an axially and reflection symmetric spacetime. The solver is second order accurate and was validated in different ways. We use for calibration an auxiliary 1D solver with the same initial and boundary conditions and the same evolution algorithm. We reproduce the quasinormal modes for the massless scalar field harmonics $\ell = 0$, $1$ and $2$. For these same harmonics, in the linear approximation, we calculate the balance of energy between the black hole and the world tube. As an example of nonlinear harmonic generation, we show the distortion of a marginally trapped two-surface approximated as a q-boundary and based upon the harmonic $\ell=2$. Additionally, we study the evolution of the $\ell = 8$ harmonic in order to test the solver in a spacetime with a complex angular structure. Further applications and extensions are briefly discussed.

Global energy conservation in nonlinear spherical characteristic evolutions

Associated to the unique 4-parametric subgroup of translations, normal to the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs group, there exists a generator of the temporal translation asymptotic symmetry. Such a descriptor of the motion along the conformal orbit near null infinity is propagated to finite regions. This allows us to observe the global energy conservation even in extreme situations near the critical behavior of the massless scalar field collapse in spherical symmetry.

An evolution of adiabatic matter: A case for the quasistatic regime

We establish the connection between the standard ADM 3+1 treatment of matter with its characteristic equivalent, in the context of spherical symmetry. The flux-conservative rendition of the fluid equations are obtained. Considering adiabatic distributions of perfect fluid, we evolve the system using the so-called post-quasi-static approximation in radiation coordinates. We obtain an adiabatic matter evolution in the quasi-static regime or slow motion, which is not shear-free nor geodesic.

General relativistic polytropes for anisotropic matter: The general formalism and applications

We set up in detail the general formalism to model polytropic general relativistic stars with anisotropic pressure. We shall consider two different possible polytropic equations, all of which yield the same Lane-Emden equation in the Newtonian limit. A heuristic model based on an ansatz to obtain anisotropic matter solutions from known solutions for isotropic matter is adopted to illustrate the effects of the pressure anisotropy on the structure of the star. In this context, the Tolman mass, which is a measure of the active gravitational mass, is invoked to explain some features of the models. Prospective extensions of the proposed approach are pointed out.

Newtonian polytropes for anisotropic matter: General framework and applications

We set up the general formalism to model polytropic Newtonian stars with anisotropic pressure. We obtain the corresponding Lane-Emden equation. A heuristic model based on an ansatz to obtain anisotropic matter solutions from known solutions for isotropic matter is adopted to illustrate the effects of the pressure anisotropy on the structure of the star. In particular, we calculate the Chandrasekhar mass for a white dwarf. It is clearly displayed how the Chandrasekhar mass limit changes depending on the anisotropy. Prospective astrophysical applications of the proposed approach are discussed.

Electromagnetic radiation produces frame dragging

It is shown that for a generic electrovacuum spacetime, electromagnetic radiation produces vorticity of worldlines of observers in a Bondi--Sachs frame. Such an effect (and the ensuing gyroscope precession with respect to the lattice) which is a reminiscence of generation of vorticity by gravitational radiation, may be linked to the nonvanishing of components of the Poynting and the super--Poynting vectors on the planes othogonal to the vorticity vector. The possible observational relevance of such an effect is commented.

Relativistic gravitational collapse in comoving coordinates: The post-quasistatic approximation

A general iterative method proposed some years ago for the description of relativistic collapse, is presented here in comoving coordinates. For doing that we redefine the basic concepts required for the implementation of the method for comoving coordinates. In particular the definition of the post-quasistatic approximation in comoving coordinates is given. We write the field equations, the boundary conditions and a set of ordinary differential equations (the surface equations) which play a fundamental role in the algorithm. As an illustration of the method, we show how to build up a model inspired in the well known Schwarzschild interior solution. Both, the adiabatic and non adiabatic, cases are considered.

Self-similar and charged spheres in the free-streaming approximation

We evolve nonadiabatic charged spherical distributions of matter. Dissipation is described by the free-streaming approximation. We match a self-similar interior solution with the Reissner-Nordström-Vaidya exterior solution. The transport mechanism is decisive to the fate of the gravitational collapse. Almost a half of the total initial mass is radiated away. The transport mechanism determines the way in which the electric charge is redistributed.

Bondian frames to couple matter with radiation

A study is presented for the non linear evolution of a self gravitating distribution of matter coupled to a massless scalar field. The characteristic formulation for numerical relativity is used to follow the evolution by a sequence of light cones open to the future. Bondian frames are used to endow physical meaning to the matter variables and to the massless scalar field. Asymptotic approaches to the origin and to infinity are achieved; at the boundary surface interior and exterior solutions are matched guaranteeing the Darmois--Lichnerowicz conditions. To show how the scheme works some numerical models are discussed. We exemplify evolving scalar waves on the following fixed backgrounds: A) an atmosphere between the boundary surface of an incompressible mixtured fluid and infinity; B) a polytropic distribution matched to a Schwarzschild exterior; C) a Schwarzschild- Schwarzschild spacetime. The conservation of energy, the Newman--Penrose constant preservation and other expected features are observed.

Heat flow in the postquasistatic approximation

We apply the postquasistatic approximation to study the evolution of spherically symmetric fluid distributions undergoing dissipation in the form of radial heat flow. For a model which corresponds to an incompressible fluid departing from the static equilibrium, it is not possible to go far from the initial state after the emission of a small amount of energy. Initially collapsing distributions of matter are not permitted. Emission of energy can be considered as a mechanism to avoid the collapse. If the distribution collapses initially and emits one hundredth of the initial mass only the outermost layers evolve. For a model which corresponds to a highly compressed Fermi gas, only the outermost shell can evolve with a shorter hydrodynamic time scale.

Nonadiabatic charged spherical evolution in the postquasistatic approximation

We apply the postquasistatic approximation, an iterative method for the evolution of self-gravitating spheres of matter, to study the evolution of dissipative and electrically charged distributions in General Relativity. We evolve nonadiabatic distributions assuming an equation of state that accounts for the anisotropy induced by the electric charge. Dissipation is described by streaming out or diffusion approximations. We match the interior solution, in noncomoving coordinates, with the Vaidya-Reissner-Nordström exterior solution. Two models are considered: i) a Schwarzschild-like shell in the diffusion limit; ii) a Schwarzschild-like interior in the free streaming limit. These toy models tell us something about the nature of the dissipative and electrically charged collapse. Diffusion stabilizes the gravitational collapse producing a spherical shell whose contraction is halted in a short characteristic hydrodynamic time. The streaming out radiation provides a more efficient mechanism for emission of energy, redistributing the electric charge on the whole sphere, while the distribution collapses indefinitely with a longer hydrodynamic time scale.

On the equivalence of nonadiabatic fluids

Here we show how an anisotropic fluid in the diffusion limit can be equivalent to an isotropic fluid in the streaming out limit, in spherical symmetry. For a particular equation of state this equivalence is total, from one fluid we can obtain the other and vice versa. A numerical master model is presented, based on a generic equation of state, in which only quantitative differences are displayed between both nonadiabatic fluids. From a deeper view, other difference between fluids is shown as an asymmetry that can be overcome if we consider the appropriate initial-boundary conditions. Equivalence in this context can be considered as a first order method of approximation to study dissipative fluids.

Shear Viscosity in the Post-quasistatic Approximation

We apply the post-quasi--static approximation, an iterative method for the evolution of self-gravitating spheres of matter, to study the evolution of anisotropic non-adiabatic radiating and dissipative distributions in General Relativity. Dissipation is described by viscosity and free-streaming radiation, assuming an equation of state to model anisotropy induced by the shear viscosity. We match the interior solution, in non-comoving coordinates, with the Vaidya exterior solution. Two simple models are presented, based on the Schwarzschild and Tolman VI solutions, in the non--adiabatic and adiabatic limit. In both cases the eventual collapse or expansion of the distribution is mainly controlled by the anisotropy induced by the viscosity.

Central equation of state in spherical characteristic evolutions

We study the evolution of a perfect--fluid sphere coupled to a scalar radiation field. By ensuring a Ricci invariant regularity as a conformally flat spacetime at the central world line we find that the fluid coupled to the scalar field satisfies the equation of state $ρ_c+3p_c=$ constant at the center of the sphere, where the energy $ρ_c$ density and the pressure $p_c$ do not necessarily contain the scalar field contribution. The fluid can be interpreted as anisotropic and radiant because of the scalar field, but it becomes perfect and non radiative at the center of the sphere. These results are being currently considered to build up a numerical relativistic hydrodynamic solver.

The Order of Sir Bondi

The direct and indirect relationship between the British physicist originally from Austria, Sir Hermann Bondi, and Venezuelan physics are presented. Special emphasis is made of his more remarkable human qualities, nobility and humbleness, besides his important contribution to General Relativity and to the European science agencies. Self--declared as a staunch disciple of Popperian philosophy, Bondi defended the "hard and dirty" physics against the "inmaculate and beauty" physics. Attention is focused on two cornerstones of Bondi's work, followed thoroughly by Luis Herrera and disciples in Venezuela.

The Post-Quasistatic Approximation as a test bed for Numerical Relativity

It is shown that observers in the standard ADM 3+1 treatment of matter are the same as the observers used in the matter treatment of Bondi: they are comoving and local Minkowskian. Bondi's observers are the basis of the post--quasitatic approximation (PQSA) to study a contracting distribution of matter. This correspondence suggests the possibility of using the PQSA as a test bed for Numerical Relativity. The treatment of matter by the PQSA and its connection with the ADM 3+1 treatment are presented, for its practical use as a calibration tool and as a test bed for numerical relativistic hydrodynamic codes.

Self--similar and charged radiating spheres: An anisotropic approach

Considering charged fluid spheres as anisotropic sources and the diffusion limit as the transport mechanism, we suppose that the inner space--time admits self--similarity. Matching the interior solution with the Reissner--Nordström--Vaidya exterior one, we find an extremely compact and oscillatory final state with a redistribution of the electric charge function and non zero pressure profiles.

preprint2005arXiv

A self-similar dynamics in viscous spheres

We study the evolution of radiating and viscous fluid spheres assuming an additional homothetic symmetry on the spherically simmetric space--time. We match a very simple solution to the symmetry equations with the exterior one (Vaidya). We then obtain a system of two ordinary differential equations which rule the dynamics, and find a self--similar collapse which is shear--free and with a barotropic equation of state. Considering a huge set of initial self--similar dynamics states, we work out a model with an acceptable physical behavior.
