Flow Equations In Arbitrary Signature

We discuss general bosonic configurations of four-dimensional N=2 supergravity coupled to vector multiplets in (t,s) space-time. The supergravity theories with Euclidean and neutral signature are described by the so-called para-special Kähler geometry. For extremal solutions, we derive in a unified fashion, using the equations of motion, the flow equations for all space-time signatures. Demanding that the solutions with neutral and Euclidean signatures admit unbroken supersymmetry, we derive the constraints, known as the stabilisation equations, on the para-covariantly holomorphic sections expressed in terms of the adapted coordinates. The stabilisation equations expressed in terms of the para-complex sections imply generalised flow equations in terms of para-complex central charge. For Euclidean and neutral signature, it is demonstrated that solutions for either signs of gauge kinetic terms are mapped into each other via field redefinitions.

Neutral Signature Gauged Supergravity Solutions

We classify all supersymmetric solutions of minimal D=4 gauged supergravity with (2,2) signature and a positive cosmological constant which admit exactly one Killing spinor. This classification produces a geometric structure which is more general than that found for previous classifications of N=2 supersymmetric solutions of this theory. We illustrate how the N=2 solutions which consist of a fibration over a 3-dimensional Lorentzian Gauduchon-Tod base space can be written in terms of this more generic geometric structure.

Real Killing Spinors in Neutral Signature

Spinorial geometry methods are used to classify solutions admitting Majorana Killing spinors of the minimal 4-dimensional supergravity in neutral signature, with vanishing cosmological constant and a single Maxwell field strength. Two classes of solutions preserving the minimal amount of supersymmetry are found. The first class admits a null-Kahler structure and corresponds to a class of self-dual solutions found by Bryant. The second class admits a null and rotation-free geodesic congruence with respect to which a parallel frame can be chosen. Examples of solutions in the former class are pseudo-hyper-Kahler manifolds; and examples in the latter class include self-dual solutions, as well as a neutral-signature IWP-type solution.

Solutions of D=4 Gauged Pseudo-Supergravity

The techniques of spinorial geometry are used to classify solutions admitting Killing spinors in the theory of minimal anti-de Sitter $N=2$, $D=4$ supergravity, where the gauge kinetic term comes with the opposite sign. There are four classes of solutions. One class is described by metrics corresponding to gravitational waves propagating on $AdS_2\times H^2$. The second class of solution is a new solution corresponding to a special limiting case of the Killing spinor. The third class of solution corresponds to fibrations over a Lorentzian three dimensional manifold which has a Lorentzian Gauduchon-Tod structure. The fourth class of solution is a cosmological extension of a Majumdar-Papapetrou type solution, described by a function satisfying the wave equation on $\mathbb{R}^{2,1}$ .

Index Theory and Supersymmetry of 5D Horizons

We prove that the near-horizon geometries of minimal gauged five-dimensional supergravity preserve at least half of the supersymmetry. If the near-horizon geometries preserve a larger fraction, then they are locally isometric to $AdS_5$. Our proof is based on Lichnerowicz type theorems for two horizon Dirac operators constructed from the supercovariant connection restricted to the horizon sections, and on an application of the index theorem. An application is that all half-supersymmetric five-dimensional horizons admit an $\mathfrak{sl}(2, {\mathbb{R}})$ symmetry subalgebra.

Phantom Metrics With Killing Spinors

We study metric solutions of Einstein-anti-Maxwell theory admitting Killing spinors. The analogue of the IWP metric which admits a space-like Killing vector is found and is expressed in terms of a complex function satisfying the wave equation in flat (2+1)-dimensional space-time. As examples, electric and magnetic Kasner spaces are constructed by allowing the solution to depend only on the time coordinate. Euclidean solutions are also presented.

Supersymmetric AdS Black Rings

It has been proven in arXiv:1303.0853 that all regular supersymmetric near-horizon geometries in minimal five-dimensional gauged supergravity admit automatic supersymmetry enhancement. Using this result, the integrability conditions associated with the existence of the additional supersymmetry are analysed, and the near-horizon geometries are determined explicitly. We show that they all correspond to previously constructed examples. Hence, there are no supersymmetric black ring solutions in minimal five-dimensional gauged supergravity.

Einstein Weyl Structures and de Sitter Supergravity

The geometric structure of the null solutions of de Sitter D=5 gauged supergravity coupled to vector multiplets is investigated. These solutions are Kundt metrics, constructed from a one-parameter family of three dimensional Gauduchon-Tod base spaces. We give examples, including the near horizon geometries previously found in arxiv:hep-th/10122120. In addition, two special cases are considered in detail. In the first, we consider solutions for which the Gauduchon-Tod base space is the Berger sphere. In the second case we take the null 1-form Killing spinor bilinear to be recurrent, so that the holonomy of the Levi-Civita connection is contained in Sim(3).

Euclidean N=2 Supergravity

Euclidean special geometry has recently been investigated in the context of Euclidean supersymmetric theories with vector multiplets. In the rigid case, the scalar manifold is described by affine special para-Kahler geometry while the target geometries of Euclidean vector multiplets coupled to supergravity are given by projective special para-Kahler manifolds. In this letter, we derive the Killing spinor equations of Euclidean N=2 supergravity theories coupled to vector multiplets. These equations provide the starting point for finding general supersymmetric instanton solutions.

Cosmological Einstein-Maxwell Instantons and Euclidean Supersymmetry: Beyond Self-Duality

We construct new supersymmetric solutions to the Euclidean Einstein-Maxwell theory with a non-vanishing cosmological constant, and for which the Maxwell field strength is neither self-dual or anti-self-dual. We find that there are three classes of solutions, depending on the sign of the Maxwell field strength and cosmological constant terms in the Einstein equations which arise from the integrability conditions of the Killing spinor equation. The first class is a Euclidean version of a Lorentzian supersymmetric solution found in arXiv:0804.0009, hep-th/0406238 . The second class is constructed from a three dimensional base space which admits a hyper-CR Einstein-Weyl structure. The third class is the Euclidean Kastor-Traschen solution.

Small Horizons

All near horizon geometries of supersymmetric black holes in a N=2, D=5 higher-derivative supergravity theory are classified. Depending on the choice of near-horizon data we find that either there are no regular horizons, or horizons exist and the spatial cross-sections of the event horizons are conformal to a squashed or round S^3, S^1 * S^2, or T^3. If the conformal factor is constant then the solutions are maximally supersymmetric. If the conformal factor is not constant, we find that it satisfies a non-linear vortex equation, and the horizon may admit scalar hair.

Towards Cosmological Black Rings

We classify all pseudo-supersymmetric near horizon geometries of extremal black holes in five dimensional de-Sitter supergravity coupled to vector multiplets. We find that there are three types of solution. The first type corresponds to the near-horizon geometry of extremal de Sitter BMPV black holes, and the spatial cross-section of the horizon is topologically S^3. The other two solutions cannot be embedded into the minimal de-Sitter supergravity theory, and correspond to near-horizon geometries for which the spatial cross-sections of the horizon are T^3 or S^1 * S^2.

Enhanced Horizons

Half-supersymmetric geometries of N=2 five-dimensional gauged supergravity have recently been fully classified using spinorial geometry techniques. We use this classification to determine all possible regular half-supersymmetric near-horizon geometries, assuming that all of the gauge-invariant spinor bilinears are regular at the horizon. Four geometries are found, two of which have been found previously in hep-th/0611351 and arXiv:0708.3695.

Black hole mass and Hamilton-Jacobi counterterms

We apply the method of holographic renormalization to computing black hole masses in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spaces. In particular, we demonstrate that the Hamilton-Jacobi approach to obtaining the boundary action yields a set of counterterms sufficient to render the masses finite for four, five, six and seven-dimensional R-charged black holes in gauged supergravities. In addition, we prove that the familiar black hole thermodynamical expressions and in particular the first law continues to holds in general in the presence of arbitrary matter couplings to gravity.

Mass in anti-de Sitter spaces

The boundary stress tensor approach has proven extremely useful in defining mass and angular momentum in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spaces with CFT duals. An integral part of this method is the use of boundary counterterms to regulate the gravitational action and stress tensor. In addition to the standard gravitational counterterms, in the presence of matter we advocate the use of a finite counterterm proportional to phi^2 (in five dimensions). We demonstrate that this finite shift is necessary to properly reproduce the expected mass/charge relation for R-charged black holes in AdS_5.

Charged configurations in (A)dS spaces

We construct new backgrounds of d-dimensional gravity with a negative cosmological constant coupled to a m-form field strength. We find a class of magnetically charged anti-de Sitter black holes with m-dimensional Einstein horizon of positive, zero or negative curvature. We also construct a new magnetic co-dimension four brane for the case of m=3. This brane obeys a charge quantization condition of the form q \sim L^2 where q is the magnetic 3-form charge and L is the AdS radius. In addition, we work out some time-dependent solutions.

General (Anti-)de Sitter Black Holes in Five Dimensions

We find a general class of rotating charged black hole solutions to N=2, D=5 gauged supergravity coupled to vector supermultiplets. The supersymmetry properties of these solutions are studied, and their mass and angular momenta are obtained. We also compute the stress tensor of the dual D=4, N=4 super Yang-Mills theory in the limit of strong `t Hooft coupling. It is shown that closed timelike curves occur outside the horizon, indicating loss of unitarity in the dual CFT. For imaginary coupling constant of the gravitini to the gauge fields, one can obtain multi-centered rotating charged de Sitter black holes. Some physical properties of these solutions are also discussed.

Supersymmetry of Black Strings in D=5 Gauged Supergravities

Supersymmetry of five dimensional string solutions is examined in the context of gauged D=5, N=2 supergravity coupled to abelian vector multiplets. We find magnetic black strings preserving one quarter of supersymmetry and approaching the half-supersymmetric product space AdS_3\times H^2 near the event horizon. The solutions thus exhibit the phenomenon of supersymmetry enhancement near the horizon, like in the cases of ungauged supergravity theories, where the near horizon limit is fully supersymmetric. Finally, product space compactifications are studied in detail, and it is shown that only for negative curvature (hyperbolic) internal spaces, some amount of supersymmetry can be preserved. Among other solutions, we find that the extremal rotating BTZ black hole tensored by H^2 preserves one quarter of supersymmetry.

Strings And Dyonic Plasmas

Recently Olesen has shown the existence of dual string solutions to the equations of ideal Magnetohydrodynamics that describe the long wavelength properties of electrically charged plasmas. Here, we extend these solutions to include the case of plasmas consisting of point like dyons, which carry both electric and magnetic charge. Such strings are dyonic in that they consist of both magnetic and electric flux. We contrast some physical features of dyonic plasmas with those of the purely electric or magnetic type, particularly in relation to the validity of the ideal approximation.

Symplectic Embeddings and Special Kahler Geometry of CP(n-1,1)

The embedding of the isometry group of the coset spaces SU(1,n)/ U(1)xSU(n) in Sp(2n+2,R) is discussed. The knowledge of such embedding provides a tool for the determination of the holomorphic prepotential characterizing the special geometry of these manifolds and necessary in the superconformal tensor calculus of N=2 supergravity. It is demonstrated that there exists certain embeddings for which the homogeneous prepotential does not exist. Whether a holomorphic function exists or not, the dependence of the gauge kinetic terms on the scalars characterizing these coset in N=2 supergravity theory can be determined from the knowledge of the corresponding embedding, à la Gaillard and Zumino. Our results are used to study some of the duality symmetries of heterotic compactifications of orbifolds with Wilson lines.

Kahler Potentials For Orbifolds With Continuous Wilson Lines And The Symmetries Of The String Action.

By employing the symmetries of the underlying conformal field theory, the tree-level Kähler potentials for untwisted moduli of the heterotic string compactifications on orbifolds with continuous Wilson lines are derived. These symmetries act linearly on bosonic (toroidal and $E_8\times E_8$ gauge) string coordinates as well as on the untwisted (toroidal and continuous Wilson lines) moduli; they correspond to the scaling of toroidal moduli, the axionic shift of toroidal moduli and the shift of the continuous Wilson line moduli. In turn such symmetries provide sufficient constraints to determine the form of the low-energy effective action associated with the untwisted moduli up to a multiplicative factor.

Special Geometry and Twisted Moduli in Orbifold Theories with Continuous Wilson Lines

Target space duality symmetries, which acts on Kähler and continuous Wilson line moduli, of a ${\bf Z}_N$ ($N\not=2$) 2-dimensional subspace of the moduli space of orbifold compactification are modified to include twisted moduli. These spaces described by the cosets $SU(n,1)\over SU(n)\times U(1)$ are $special$ Kähler, a fact which is exploited in deriving the extension of tree level duality transformation to include higher orders of the twisted moduli. Also, restrictions on these higher order terms are derived.

Anisotropic Solutions For Orbifold Moduli From Duality Invariant Gaugino Condensates

The values of the $T$ and $U$ moduli are studied for those ${\bf Z}_N $ Coxeter orbifolds with the property that some of the twisted sectors have fixed planes for which the six-torus ${\bf T}^6 $ can not be decomposed into a direct sum ${\bf T}^2\bigoplus {\bf T}^4 $ with the fixed plane lying in ${\bf T}^2 $. Such moduli in general transform under a subgroup of the modular group $SL(2,Z).$ The moduli are determined by minimizing the effective potential derived from a duality invariant gaugino condensate.

Background Symmetries In Orbifolds With Discrete Wilson Lines

Target space symmetries are studied for orbifold compactified string theories containing Wilson line background fields. The symmetries determined are for those moduli which contribute to the string loop threshold corrections of the gauge coupling constants. The groups found are subgroups of the modular group $PSL(2, Z)$ and depend on the choice of discrete Wilson lines and the shape of the underlying six-dimensional lattice.

Modular Symmetries, Threshold Corrections And Moduli For $Z_2 \times Z_2 $ Orbifolds

${\bf Z}_2\times {\bf Z}_2$ Coxeter orbifolds are constructed with the property that some twisted sectors have fixed planes for which the six-torus can not be decomposed into a direct sum ${\bf T}^2\bigoplus{\bf T}^4 $ with the fixed plane lying in ${\bf T}^2$. The string loop threshold corrections to the gauge coupling constants are derived, and display symmetry groups for the $T$ and $U$ moduli that are subgroups of the full modular group $PSL(2,Z)$. The effective potential for duality invariant gaugino condensate in the presence of hidden sector matter is constructed and minimized for the values of the moduli. The effect of Wilson lines on the modular symmetries is also studied.
