Fast Computation of Solvation Free Energies with Molecular Density Functional Theory: Thermodynamic-Ensemble Partial Molar Volume Corrections

Molecular Density Functional Theory (MDFT) offers an efficient implicit- solvent method to estimate molecule solvation free-energies whereas conserving a fully molecular representation of the solvent. Even within a second order ap- proximation for the free-energy functional, the so-called homogeneous reference uid approximation, we show that the hydration free-energies computed for a dataset of 500 organic compounds are of similar quality as those obtained from molecular dynamics free-energy perturbation simulations, with a computer cost reduced by two to three orders of magnitude. This requires to introduce the proper partial volume correction to transform the results from the grand canoni- cal to the isobaric-isotherm ensemble that is pertinent to experiments. We show that this correction can be extended to 3D-RISM calculations, giving a sound theoretical justifcation to empirical partial molar volume corrections that have been proposed recently.

Fast calculation of thermodynamic and structural parameters of solutions using the 3DRISM model and the multi-grid method

In the paper a new method to solve the tree-dimensional reference interaction site model (3DRISM) integral equations is proposed. The algorithm uses the multi-grid technique which allows to decrease the computational expanses. 3DRISM calculations for aqueous solutions of four compounds (argon, water, methane, methanol) on the different grids are performed in order to determine a dependence of the computational error on the parameters of the grid. It is shown that calculations on the grid with the step 0.05\Angstr and buffer 8\Angstr give the error of solvation free energy calculations less than 0.3 kcal/mol which is comparable to the accuracy of the experimental measurements. The performance of the algorithm is tested. It is shown that the proposed algorithm is in average more than 12 times faster than the standard Picard direct iteration method.

3DRISM Bridge Functional for the Aqueous Solutions of Carbon Nanomaterials

In the paper a bridge functional for the closure relation of the three-dimensional reference interaction model (3DRISM) equations is proposed. The effectiveness of the bridge for the aqueous solutions of the carbon nanomaterials is tested. In the paper two classes of systems are investigated: (i) infinitely diluted aqueous solutions of the Lennard-Jones (LJ) spheres and (ii) infinitely diluted aqueous solution of the carbon nanotubes(CNT). The bridge functional is fitted to the molecular simulation data. It is shown that for all the investigated systems the bridge functional can be approximated by the exponential function which depends only on the solute/solvent size ratio. It is shown that by using the proposed bridge functional is possible (i) to predict accurately the position of the first peak of the water oxygen density distribution function (DDF) around the solute, (ii) to improve the accuracy of the predictions of the first peak's height of the water oxygen DDF around the solute (iii), to predict correctly the water hydrogen DDF behavior in the vicinity of the CNT.

Universal bridge functional for infinitely diluted solutions: a case study for Lennard-Jones spheres of different diameter

In the paper we propose an universal bridge functional for the closure of the Ornstein-Zernike (OZ) equation for the case of infinitely diluted solutions of Lennard-Jones shperes of different size in the Lennard-Jones fluid. Bridge functional is paprameterized using the data of the Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations. We show that for all investigated systems the bridge functional can be efficiently papameterized with the exponential function which depends only on the ratio of sizes of the solute and solvent atoms. To check the parameterization we solve the OZ equation with the closure which includes the parametrized functional and with the closure without the bridge functional (Hyper-netted chain closure). We show that introducing the bridge functional allows to obtain radial distribution functions (RDFs), which are close to the MD results and essentially improve predictions of the location and height of the first peak of the RDF.
