Irrationality of growth constants associated with polynomial recursions

We consider integer sequences that satisfy a recursion of the form $x_{n+1} = P(x_n)$ for some polynomial $P$ of degree $d > 1$. If such a sequence tends to infinity, then it satisfies an asymptotic formula of the form $x_n \sim A α^{d^n}$, but little can be said about the constant $α$. In this paper, we show that $α$ is always irrational or an integer. In fact, we prove a stronger statement: if a sequence $G_n$ satisfies an asymptotic formula of the form $G_n = A α^n + B + O(α^{-εn})$, where $A,B$ are algebraic and $α> 1$, and the sequence contains infinitely many integers, then $α$ is irrational or an integer.

White Paper on 6G Drivers and the UN SDGs

The commercial launch of 6G communications systems and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, UN SDGs, are both targeted for 2030. 6G communications is expected to boost global growth and productivity, create new business models and transform many aspects of society. The UN SDGs are a way of framing opportunities and challenges of a desirable future world and cover topics as broad as ending poverty, gender equality, climate change and smart cities. The relationship between these potentially mutually reinforcing forces is currently under-defined. Building on the vision for 6G, a review of megatrends, on-going activities on the relation of mobile communications to the UN SDGs and existing indicators, a novel linkage between 6G and the UN SDGs is proposed via indicators. The white paper has also launched the work of deriving new 6G related indicators to guide the research of 6G systems. The novel linkage is built on the envisaged three-fold role of 6G as a provider of services to help steer and support communities and countries towards reaching the UN SDGs, as an enabler of measuring tool for data collection to help reporting of indicators with hyperlocal granularity, and as a reinforcer of new ecosystems based on 6G technology enablers and 6G network of networks to be developed in line with the UN SDGs that incorporates future mobile communication technologies available in 2030. Related challenges are also identified. An action plan is presented along with prioritized focus areas within the mobile communication sector technology and industry evolution to best support the achievement of the UN SDGs.

White Paper on Business of 6G

Developing products, services and vertical applications for the future digitized society in the 6G era requires a multidisciplinary approach and a re-definition of how we create, deliver and consume network resources, data and services for both communications and sensing purposes. This development will change and disrupt the traditional business models and ecosystem roles of digital service providers, as well as open the market for key stakeholders in the 6G era like digital service operators, cloud operators and resource brokers. White paper discusses unprecedented opportunities of enabling and empowering multiple stakeholders to have a more active participation in the future 6G ecosystem via novel sustainable open ecosystemic business models with flexible integration of long tail services with tailored performance attributes. This research adopts a qualitative scenario planning method and portrays three scenario themes resulting in a total of 12 scenarios for the futures of the 6G business. By focusing on key trends, their interactions, and irreducible uncertainties, scenario building generates perspectives for the futures within which alternative 6G business strategies were developed and assessed for a traditional incumbent mobile network operator and a novel 6G digital service provider stemming from redefined sustainable economics. Value-capture in the 6G era requires understanding the dynamics of platforms and ecosystems. Results indicate that, to reach some of the preferred futures, we should pay attention to the privacy and security issues related to business and regulation needs; public/governmental, corporate, community and user(s) perspectives to and aims of governance; ecosystem configuration related to users, decentralized business models and platforms; user empowerment; and the role of location-specificity of services.

Effective Resolution of Diophantine equations of the form $u_n+u_m=w p_1^{z_1} \cdots p_s^{z_s}$

Let $u_n$ be a fixed non-degenerate binary recurrence sequence with positive discriminant, $w$ a fixed non-zero integer and $p_1,p_2,\dots,p_s$ fixed, distinct prime numbers. In this paper we consider the Diophantine equation $u_n+u_m=w p_1^{z_1} \cdots p_s^{z_s}$ and prove under mild technical restrictions effective finiteness results. In particular we give explicit upper bounds for $n,m$ and $z_1, \dots, z_s$. Furthermore, we provide a rather efficient algorithm to solve Diophantine equations of the described type and we demonstrate our method by an example.

Non-Minimality of the Width-$w$ Non-adjacent Form in Conjunction with Trace One $τ$-adic Digit Expansions and Koblitz Curves in Characteristic Two

This article deals with redundant digit expansions with an imaginary quadratic algebraic integer with trace $\pm 1$ as base and a minimal norm representatives digit set. For $w\geq 2$ it is shown that the width-$w$ non-adjacent form is not an optimal expansion, meaning that it does not minimize the (Hamming-)weight among all possible expansions with the same digit set. One main part of the proof uses tools from Diophantine analysis, namely the theory of linear forms in logarithms and the Baker--Davenport reduction method.

Discrepancy of generalized $LS$-sequences

The $LS$-sequences are a parametric family of sequences of points in the unit interval. They were introduced by Carbone, who also proved that under an appropriate choice of the parameters $L$ and $S$, such sequences are low-discrepancy. The aim of the present paper is to provide explicit constants in the bounds of the discrepancy of $LS$-sequences. Further, we generalize the construction of Carbone and construct a new class of sequences of points in the unit interval, the generalized $LS$-sequences.

Finiteness results for Diophantine triples with repdigit values

Let $g\ge 2$ be an integer and $\mathcal R_g\subset \mathbb N$ be the set of repdigits in base $g$. Let $\mathcal D_g$ be the set of Diophantine triples with values in $\mathcal R_g$; that is, $\mathcal D_g$ is the set of all triples $(a,b,c)\in \mathbb N^3$ with $c<b<a$ such that $ab+1,ac+1$ and $ab+1$ lie in the set $\mathcal R_g$. In this paper, we prove effective finitness results for the set $\mathcal D_g$.

An infinite family of multiplicatively independent bases of number systems in cyclotomic number fields

Let $ζ_k$ be a $k$-th primitive root of unity, $m\geqϕ(k)+1$ an integer and $Φ_k(X)\in\mathbb Z [X]$ the $k$-th cyclotomic polynomial. In this paper we show that the pair $(-m+ζ_k,\mathcal N)$ is a canonical number system, with $\mathcal N=\{0,1,\dots,|Φ_k(m)|\}$. Moreover we also discuss whether the two bases $-m+ζ_k$ and $-n+ζ_k$ are multiplicatively independent for positive integers $m$ and $n$ and $k$ fixed.

Non-Existence of Some Nearly Perfect Sequences, Near Butson-Hadamard Matrices, and Near Conference Matrices

In this paper we study the non-existence problem of (nearly) perfect (almost) $m$-ary sequences via their connection to (near) Butson-Hadamard (BH) matrices and (near) conference matrices. Firstly, we apply a result on vanishing sums of roots of unity and a result of Brock on the unsolvability of certain equations over a cyclotomic number field to derive non-existence results for near BH matrices and near conference matrices. Secondly, we refine the idea of Brock in the case of cyclotomic number fields whose ring of integers is not a principal ideal domains and get many new non-existence results.

On corner avoidance of $\boldsymbol β$-adic Halton sequences

We consider the corner avoiding property of $s$-dimensional $\boldsymbol β$-adic Halton sequences. After extending this class of point sequences in an intuitive way, we show that the hyperbolic distance between each element of the sequence and the closest corner of $[0,1)^s$ is $\mathcal{O}\left(\frac{1}{N^{s/2+ε}}\right)$, where $N$ denotes the index of the element. In our proof we use tools from Diophantine analysis, more precisely, we apply Schmidt's Subspace Theorem.

On multiplicatively independent bases in cyclotomic number fields

Recently the authors showed that the algebraic integers of the form $-m+ζ_k$ are bases of a canonical number system of $\mathbb{Z}[ζ_k]$ provided $m\geq ϕ(k)+1$, where $ζ_k$ denotes a $k$-th primitive root of unity and $ϕ$ is Euler's totient function. In this paper we are interested in the questions whether two bases $-m+ζ_k$ and $-n+ζ_k$ are multiplicatively independent. We show the multiplicative independence in case that $0<|m-n|<10^6$ and $|m|,|n|> 1$.

S-Diophantine quadruples with $\mathbf{S=\{2,q\}}$

Let $S$ denote a set of primes and let $a_1,\ldots,a_m$ be positive distinct integers. We call the $m$-tuple $(a_1,\ldots,a_m)$ an $S$-Diophantine tuple if $a_ia_j+1=s_{i,j}$ are $S$-integers for all $i\not=j$. In this paper, we show that no $S$-Diophantine quadruple (i.e~$m=4$) exists if $S=\{2,q\}$ with $q\equiv 3\; (\bmod\, 4)$ or $q<10^9$. For two arbitrary primes $p,q<10^5$ we gain the same result.

On the uniform distribution modulo 1 of multidimensional LS-sequences

Ingrid Carbone introduced the notion of so-called LS-sequences of points, which are obtained by a generalization of Kakutani's interval splitting procedure. Under an appropriate choice of the parameters $L$ and $S$, such sequences have low discrepancy, which means that they are natural candidates for Quasi-Monte Carlo integration. It is tempting to assume that LS-sequences can be combined coordinatewise to obtain a multidimensional low-discrepancy sequence. However, in the present paper we prove that this is not always the case: if the parameters $L_1,S_1$ and $L_2,S_2$ of two one-dimensional low-discrepancy LS-sequences satisfy certain number-theoretic conditions, then their two-dimensional combination is not even dense in $[0,1]^2$.
