Precise asymptotics of longest cycles in random permutations without macroscopic cycles

We consider Ewens random permutations of length $n$ conditioned to have no cycle longer than $n^β$ with $0<β<1$ and to study the asymptotic behaviour as $n\to\infty$. We obtain very precise information on the joint distribution of the lengths of the longest cycles; in particular we prove a functional limit theorem where the cumulative number of long cycles converges to a Poisson process in the suitable scaling. Furthermore, we prove convergence of the total variation distance between joint cycle counts and suitable independent Poisson random variables up to a significantly larger maximal cycle length than previously known. Finally, we remove a superfluous assumption from a central limit theorem for the total number of cycles proved in an earlier paper.

Stable states of perturbed Markov chains

Given an infinitesimal perturbation of a discrete-time finite Markov chain, we seek the states that are stable despite the perturbation, \textit{i.e.} the states whose weights in the stationary distributions can be bounded away from $0$ as the noise fades away. Chemists, economists, and computer scientists have been studying irreducible perturbations built with exponential maps. Under these assumptions, Young proved the existence of and computed the stable states in cubic time. We fully drop these assumptions, generalize Young's technique, and show that stability is decidable as long as $f\in O(g)$ is. Furthermore, if the perturbation maps (and their multiplications) satisfy $f\in O(g)$ or $g\in O(f)$, we prove the existence of and compute the stable states and the metastable dynamics at all time scales where some states vanish. Conversely, if the big-$O$ assumption does not hold, we build a perturbation with these maps and no stable state. Our algorithm also runs in cubic time despite the general assumptions and the additional work. Proving the correctness of the algorithm relies on new or rephrased results in Markov chain theory, and on algebraic abstractions thereof.

Wave packet dynamics in the optimal superadiabatic approximation

We explain the concept of superadiabatic approximations and show how in the context of the Born- Oppenheimer approximation they lead to an explicit formula that can be used to predict transitions at avoided crossings. Based on this formula, we present a simple method for computing wave packet dynamics across avoided crossings. Only knowledge of the adiabatic electronic energy levels near the avoided crossing is required for the computation. In particular, this means that no diabatization procedure is necessary, the adiabatic energy levels can be computed on the fly, and they only need to be computed to higher accuracy when an avoided crossing is detected. We test the quality of our method on the paradigmatic example of photo-dissociation of NaI, finding very good agreement with results of exact wave packet calculations.

Multi-scale metastable dynamics and the asymptotic stationary distribution of perturbed Markov chains

We consider a simple but important class of metastable discrete time Markov chains, which we call perturbed Markov chains. Basically, we assume that the transition matrices depend on a parameter $\varepsilon$, and converge as $\varepsilon$. We further assume that the chain is irreducible for $\varepsilon$ but may have several essential communicating classes when $\varepsilon$. This leads to metastable behavior, possibly on multiple time scales. For each of the relevant time scales, we derive two effective chains. The first one describes the (possibly irreversible) metastable dynamics, while the second one is reversible and describes metastable escape probabilities. Closed probabilistic expressions are given for the asymptotic transition probabilities of these chains, but we also show how to compute them in a fast and numerically stable way. As a consequence, we obtain efficient algorithms for computing the committor function and the limiting stationary distribution.

Random permutations of a regular lattice

Spatial random permutations were originally studied due to their connections to Bose-Einstein condensation, but they possess many interesting properties of their own. For random permutations of a regular lattice with periodic boundary conditions, we prove existence of the infinite volume limit under fairly weak assumptions. When the dimension of the lattice is two, we give numerical evidence of a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, and of long cycles having an almost sure fractal dimension in the scaling limit. Finally we comment on possible connections to Schramm-Löwner curves.

Critical Temperature of Dilute Bose Gases

We compute the critical temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation in dilute three-dimensional homogeneous Bose gases. Our method involves the models of spatial permutations and it should be exact to lowest order in the scattering length of the particle interactions. We find that the change in the critical temperature is proportional to a rho^{1/3} with constant c = -2.33; this contradicts the current consensus among physicists.

Effective density of states for a quantum oscillator coupled to a photon field

We give an explicit formula for the effective partition function of a harmonically bound particle minimally coupled to a photon field in the dipole approximation. The effective partition function is shown to be the Laplace transform of a positive Borel measure, the effective measure of states. The absolutely continuous part of the latter allows for an analytic continuation, the singularities of which give rise to resonances. We give the precise location of these singularities, and show that they are well approximated by of first order poles with residues equal the multiplicities of the corresponding eigenspaces of the uncoupled quantum oscillator. Thus we obtain a complete analytic description of the natural line spectrum of the charged oscillator.

Non-adiabatic transitions through tilted avoided crossings

We investigate the transition of a quantum wave-packet through a one-dimensional avoided crossing of molecular energy levels when the energy levels at the crossing point are tilted. Using superadiabatic representations, and an approximation of the dynamics near the crossing region, we obtain an explicit formula for the transition wavefunction. Our results agree extremely well with high precision ab-initio calculations.

Spatial random permutations with small cycle weights

We consider the distribution of cycles in two models of random permutations, that are related to one another. In the first model, cycles receive a weight that depends on their length. The second model deals with permutations of points in the space and there is an additional weight that involves the length of permutation jumps. We prove the occurrence of infinite macroscopic cycles above a certain critical density.

Superadiabatic transition histories in quantum molecular dynamics

We study the dynamics of a molecule's nuclear wave-function near an avoided crossing of two electronic energy levels, for one nuclear degree of freedom. We derive the general form of the Schroedinger equation in the n-th superadiabatic representation for all n, and give some partial results about the asymptotics for large n. Using these results, we obtain closed formulas for the time development of the component of the wave function in an initially unoccupied energy subspace, when a wave packet crosses the transition region. In the optimal superadiabatic representation, which we define, this component builds up monontonically. Finally, we give an explicit formula for the transition wave function away from the crossing, which is in excellent agreement with high precision numerical calculations.
