Effective model for in-medium $\bar{K}N$ interactions including the $L=1$ partial wave

Coupled channels model of meson-baryon interactions based on the effective chiral Lagrangian is extended to account explicitly for the $Σ(1385)$ resonance that dominates the $P$-wave $\bar{K}N$ and $πΣ$ interactions at energies below the $\bar{K}N$ threshold. The presented model aims at a uniform treatment of the $Λ(1405)$ and $Σ(1385)$ dynamics in the nuclear medium. We demonstrate the applicability of the model by confronting its predictions with the vacuum scattering data, then we follow with discussing the impact of nuclear matter on the $πΣ$ mass spectrum and on the energy dependence of the $K^{-}p$ branching ratios.

Nucleon-nucleon scattering matrix and its Nc scaling

This paper focuses on the scaling of the S-matrix for elastic nucleon-nucleon scattering at large Nc. It is argued that the logarithm of a typical S-matrix element is proportional to Nc in the regime where the large Nc limit is taken with momentum of the incident nucleons proportional Nc. The suggested scaling was previously derived within the framework of potential scattering models for purely elastic scattering in which the parameters scale the same way as in large Nc QCD. A variety of heuristic arguments strongly suggest that the same scaling holds in the realistic case where both elastic and inelastic scattering are possible.

The inelastic vs. total nucleon-nucleon cross section at large $N_c$

In this paper, the implication of the extreme large $N_c$ limit for nucleon-nucleon cross section is examined. Starting from the $N_c$ scaling of the S-matrix elements, a relation between the total inelastic and total cross sections is derived for the regime in which the momenta are much larger than the QCD scale. A conceptual complication arise from the fact that there is a tower of baryons, such as the $Δ$, with mass splittings from the nucleon which go to zero at large $N_c$. Since these baryons are stable at large $N_c$, the meaning of elasticity must be modified. Processes which only transform nucleons to these baryons are considered elastic; processes in which at least one additional meson is produced are considered inelastic. It is shown that in the extreme large $N_c$ limit, the total inelastic cross section is exactly one eighth of the total cross section. In contrast, in the physical world of $N_c=3$ the total cross section for high-energy nucleon-nucleon scattering is dominated by inelastic processes.

Model-independent form factor relations at large $N_c$

In this paper a model-independent relation which holds for the long distance part of the Fourier transform of the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon in the large $N_c$ and chiral limits is demonstrated. This relation was previously conjectured based on the fact that it emerged in {\it all} semiclassical chiral models independent of the details of the model. Here we show that the result is, in fact, model independent by deriving it directly in large $N_c$ chiral perturbation theory which is known to capture the long distance behavior of the form factors. The relation is valid when the large $N_c$ limit is formally taken before the chiral limit. A new relation is derived for the case where the chiral limit is taken prior to the large $N_c$ limit.

Separable potential model for meson-baryon interaction beyond the S-wave

A model for low-energy meson-baryon interaction in the strange sector is presented. The interaction is described in terms of separable potentials with multiple partial waves considered. A general solution of Lippmann-Schwinger equation for the scattering of spin zero and spin one-half particles is derived. Next, the general framework is applied to the $\bar{K}N$ sector in a simple model with only the S- and P-waves taken into account. The separable potential is designed to match the chiral perturbation theory at lowest nontrivial order. It is shown that although a simple model with three free parameters works well for the S-wave, it fails to reproduce the P-wave features of kaon-nucleon physics. Most importantly, the P-wave interaction is too weak to express a resonant behavior that could be identified as $Σ(1385)$ resonance.

Does the empirical meson spectrum support the Hagedorn conjecture?

It has long been conjectured that strong interactions give rise to a Hagedorn spectrum and theoretical arguments have been presented in support of Hagedorn spectrum in large $N_c$ QCD. This paper discusses the extent to which the meson spectrum should be viewed as evidence for a Hagedorn spectrum and argues that data do not provide a strong evidence for the Hagedorn conjecture. The conclusion is based on three reasons. It is shown that "realistic" quark models have a spectrum in which the number of mesons up to 2.3 GeV grows with mass in a very similar way to the spectrum of physical mesons up to 2.3 GeV. However, these models can be shown not to have Hagedorn spectra. It is also shown that the available data are insufficient to determine the Hagedorn temperature. The data can be described with comparable accuracy by various functional forms of the prefactor that yield radically different Hagedorn temperatures. An analysis of the behavior of the spectrum for the various parity-spin-charge conjugation-isospin channels also appears to be inconsistent with what one expects if the data were in the regime dominated by exponential behavior.

The Hagedorn spectrum and large $N_c$ QCD in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions

We show that a Hagedorn spectrum (i.e., spectrum where the number of hadrons grows exponentially with the mass) emerges automatically in large $N_c$ QCD in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions. The approach is based on the study of Euclidean space correlation functions for composite operators constructed from quark and gluon fields and exploits the fact that the short time behavior of the correlators is known in QCD. The demonstration relies on one critical assumption: that perturbation theory accurately describes the trace of the logarithm of a matrix of point-to-point correlation functions in the regime where the perturbative corrections to the asymptotically free value are small.
