High-precision solution of the Dirac Equation for the hydrogen molecular ion by an iterative method

The Dirac equation for H$_2^+$ is solved numerically using an iterative method proposed by Kutzelnigg [Z. Phys. 11, 15 (1989]. The four-component wavefunction is expanded in a newly introduced kinetically balanced exponential basis set. The ground-state relativistic energy is obtained with an accuracy of $10^{-20}$, which represents an improvement by several orders of magnitude, and is shown to be in good agreement with results obtained from perturbation theory.Highly accurate relativistic wavefunctions are obtained, which is a first step towards nonperturbative calculations of the one-loop self-energy correction in hydrogen molecular ions.

Higher-order corrections to spin-orbit and spin-spin tensor interactions in hydrogen molecular ions: theory and application to H$_2^+$

We consider higher-order corrections to hyperfine coefficients related to the spin-orbit and spin-spin tensor interactions in hydrogen molecular ions. The $mα^7 \ln(α)$-order radiative correction is derived in the NRQED framework. We present complete numerical calculations, including as well the $mα^6$-order relativistic correction, for the case of H$_2^+$. The theoretical uncertainty is reduced by more than one order of magnitude with respect to the Breit-Pauli level, down to a few ppm. We also compare our results with available rf spectroscopy data.

NRQED approach to the fine and hyperfine structure corrections of order $mα^6$ and $mα^6(m/M)$ -- Application to the hydrogen atom

NRQED approach to the fine and hyperfine structure corrections of order m$α$ 6 and m$α$ 6 (m/M)-Application to the hydrogen atom The NRQED approach is applied to the calculation of relativistic corrections to the fine and hyperfine structure of hydrogenlike atoms at orders m$α$ 6 and m$α$ 6 (m/M). Results are found to be in agreement with those of the relativistic theory. This confirms that the derived NRQED effective potentials are correct, and may be used for studying more complex atoms or molecules. Furthermore, we verify the equivalence between different forms of the NRQED Lagrangian used in the literature.

The leading term of the He$-\bar{p}\mbox{He}^+$ long-range interaction

The long range interaction between an antiprotonic helium atom $\bar{p}$He$^+$ and helium atom in its ground state is studied. We calculate the dispersion coefficients $C_6$ using the Complex Coordinate Rotation (CCR) formalism in order to comply with the resonant nature of metastable states of the antiprotonic helium. We present as well numerical data on static dipole polarizabilities of antiprotonic helium states. The obtained coefficients $C_6$ may be used to estimate the collisional shift and broadening of transition lines in a low density precision spectroscopy of the antiprotonic helium.

Proposed method for laser spectroscopy of pionic helium atoms to determine the charged-pion mass

Metastable pionic helium ($π{\rm He}^+$) is a three-body atom composed of a helium nucleus, an electron occupying the $1s$ ground state, and a negatively charged pion $π^-$ in a Rydberg state with principal- and orbital angular momentum quantum numbers of $n\sim \ell+1\sim 16$. We calculate the spin-independent energies of the $π{\rm ^3He}^+$ and $π{\rm ^4He}^+$ isotopes in the region $n=15$--19. These include relativistic and quantum electrodynamics corrections of orders $R_{\infty}α^2$ and $R_{\infty}α^3$ in atomic units, where $R_{\infty}$ and $α$ denote the Rydberg and fine structure constants. The fine-structure splitting due to the coupling between the electron spin and the orbital angular momentum of the $π^-$, and the radiative and Auger decay rates of the states are also calculated. Some states $(n,\ell)=(16,15)$ and $(17,16)$ retain nanosecond-scale lifetimes against $π^-$ absorption into the helium nucleus. We propose to use laser pulses to induce $π^-$ transitions from these metastable states, to states with large ($\sim 10^{11}$ s$^{-1}$) Auger rates. The $π{\rm He}^{2+}$ ion that remains after Auger emission of the $1s$ electron undergoes Stark mixing with the $s$, $p$, and $d$ states during collisions with the helium atoms in the experimental target. This leads to immediate nuclear absorption of the $π^-$. The resonance condition between the laser beam and the atom is thus revealed as a sharp spike in the rates of neutrons, protons, deuterons, and tritons that emerge....(continued)

Simple Molecules and Clocks

The precise measurement of transition frequencies in cold, trapped molecules has applications in fundamental physics, and extremely high accuracies are desirable. We determine suitable candidates by considering simple molecules with a single electron, for which the external-field shift coefficients can be calculated with high precision. Our calculations show that $\Htwop$ exhibits particular transitions whose fractional uncertainties may reach $2\times10^{-17}$ at room temperature. We also generalize the method of composite frequencies, introducing tailored linear combinations of individual transition frequencies that are free of the major systematic shifts, independent of the strength of the external perturbing fields. By applying this technique, the uncertainty should be reduced to the $10^{-18}$ range for both $\Htwop$ and $\HDp$. Thus, the theoretical results demonstrate that these molecules are of metrological relevance for future studies.

The static and dynamic polarisability, and the Stark and black-body radiation frequency shifts of the molecular hydrogen ions H2+, HD+, and D2+

We calculate the DC Stark effect for three molecular hydrogen ions in the non-relativistic approximation. The effect is calculated both in dependence on the rovibrational state and in dependence on the hyperfine state. We discuss special cases and approximations. We also calculate the AC polarisabilities for several rovibrational levels, and therefrom evaluate accurately the black-body radiation shift, including the effects of excited electronic states. The results enable the detailed evaluation of certain systematic shifts of the transitions frequencies for the purpose of ultra-high-precision optical, microwave or radio-frequency spectroscopy in ion traps.

Calculation of the relativistic Bethe logarithm in the two-center problem

We present a variational approach to evaluate relativistic corrections of order α^2 to the Bethe logarithm for the ground electronic state of the Coulomb two center problem. That allows to estimate the radiative contribution at mα^7 order in molecular-like three-body systems such as hydrogen molecular ions H_2^+ and HD^+, or antiprotonic helium atoms. While we get 10 significant digits for the nonrelativistic Bethe logarithm, calculation of the relativistic corrections is much more involved especially for small values of bond length R. We were able to achieve a level of 3-4 significant digits starting from R=0.2 bohr, that will allow to reach 10^{-10} relative uncertainty on transition frequencies.

The Bethe Logarithm for resonant states. Antiprotonic helium

We develop a numerical method to calculate the Bethe logarithm for resonant states. We use the Complex Coordinate Rotation (CCR) formalism to describe resonances as time-independent Schrödinger solutions. To get a proper expression for the Bethe logarithm we apply the generalization of the second order perturbation theory to an isolated CCR eigenstate. Using the developed method we perform a systematic calculation of the Bethe logarithm for metastable states in the antiprotonic helium He$^+\bar{p}\,$ atoms with precision of 7--8 significant digits. We also recalculate the nonrelativistic energies with improved precision using CODATA10 recommended values of masses. Along with a complete set of corrections of $mα^7$ order and the leading contributions of $mα^8$ order that has allowed us to get new theoretical values for ro-vibrational transition frequencies for the He$^+\bar{p}$ atoms with uncertainty of 0.1--0.3 MHz.

Calculation of transition probabilities and ac Stark shifts in two-photon laser transitions of antiprotonic helium

Numerical ab initio variational calculations of the transition probabilities and ac Stark shifts in two-photon transitions of antiprotonic helium atoms driven by two counter-propagating laser beams are presented. We found that sub-Doppler spectroscopy is in principle possible by exciting transitions of the type (n,L)->(n-2,L-2) between antiprotonic states of principal and angular momentum quantum numbers n~L-1~35, first by using highly monochromatic, nanosecond laser beams of intensities 10^4-10^5 W/cm^2, and then by tuning the virtual intermediate state close (e.g., within 10-20 GHz) to the real state (n-1,L-1) to enhance the nonlinear transition probability. We expect that ac Stark shifts of a few MHz or more will become an important source of systematic error at fractional precisions of better than a few parts in 10^9. These shifts can in principle be minimized and even canceled by selecting an optimum combination of laser intensities and frequencies. We simulated the resonance profiles of some two-photon transitions in the regions n=30-40 of the \bar{p}^4He^+ and \bar{p} ^3He^+ isotopes to find the best conditions that would allow this.

Precision spectroscopy of the molecular ion HD+: control of Zeeman shifts

Precision spectroscopy on cold molecules can potentially enable novel tests of fundamental laws of physics and alternative determination of some fundamental constants. Realizing this potential requires a thorough understanding of the systematic effects that shift the energy levels of molecules. We have performed a complete ab initio calculation of the magnetic field effects for a particular system, the heteronuclear molecular hydrogen ion HD+. Different spectroscopic schemes have been considered, and numerous transitions, all accessible by modern radiation sources and exhibiting well controllable or negligible Zeeman shift, have been found to exist. Thus, HD+ is a perspective candidate for determination of the ratio of electron-to-nuclear reduced mass, and for tests of its time-independence.

Spin-orbit corrections of order $mα^6$ to the fine structure of $(37,35)$ state in $^4{He}^+\bar{p}$ atom

Precise numerical calculation of radiofrequency intervals between hyperfine sublevels of the $(37,35)$ state of the antiprotonic helium-4 atom is presented. Theoretical consideration includes the QED corrections of order $mα^6$ to the electron spin-orbit interaction. The effective Hamiltonian is derived using the formalism of the nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics (NRQED).
