Density-dependent feedback in age-structured populations

The population size has far-reaching effects on the fitness of the population, that, in its turn influences the population extinction or persistence. Understanding the density- and age-dependent factors will facilitate more accurate predictions about the population dynamics and its asymptotic behaviour. In this paper, we develop a rigourous mathematical analysis to study positive and negative effects of increased population density in the classical nonlinear age-structured population model introduced by Gurtin \& MacCamy in the late 1970s. One of our main results expresses the global stability of the system in terms of the newborn function only. We also derive the existence of a threshold population size implying the population extinction, which is well-known in population dynamics as an Allee effect.

Spectral properties of nonassociative algebras and breaking regularity for nonlinear elliptic type PDEs

In this note, we address the following question: Why certain nonassociative algebra structures emerge in the regularity theory of elliptic type PDEs and also in constructing nonclassical and singular solutions? The aim of the paper is twofold. Firstly, to give a survey of diverse examples on nonregular solutions to elliptic PDEs with emphasis on recent results on nonclassical solutions to fully nonlinear equations. Secondly, to define an appropriate algebraic formalism which makes the analytic part of the construction of nonclassical solutions more transparent.

New explicit solutions to the $p$-Laplace equation based on isoparametric foliations

In contrast to an infinite family of explicit examples of two-dimensional $p$-harmonic functions obtained by G.Aronsson in the late 80s, there is very little known about the higher-dimensional case. In this paper, we show how to use isoparametric polynomials to produce diverse examples of $p$-harmonic and biharmonic functions. Remarkably, for some distinguished values of $p$ and the ambient dimension $n$ this yields first examples of rational and algebraic $p$-harmonic functions. Moreover, we show that there are no $p$-harmonic polynomials of the isoparametric type. This supports a negative answer to a question proposed in 1980 by J. Lewis.

The universality of one half in commutative nonassociative algebras with identities

In this paper we will explain an interesting phenomenon which occurs in general nonassociative algebras. More precisely, we establish that any finite-dimensional commutative nonassociative algebra over a field satisfying an identity always contains $\frac12$ in its Peirce spectrum. We also show that the corresponding $\frac12$-Peirce module satisfies the Jordan type fusion laws. The present approach is based on an explicit representation of the Peirce polynomial for an arbitrary algebra identity. To work with fusion rules, we develop the concept of the Peirce symbol and show that it can be explicitly determined for a wide class of algebras. We also illustrate our approach by further applications to genetic algebras and algebra of minimal cones (the so-called Hsiang algebras).

Variety of idempotents in nonassociative algebras

In this paper, we study the variety of all nonassociative (NA) algebras from the idempotent point of view. We are interested, in particular, in the spectral properties of idempotents when algebra is generic, i.e. idempotents are in general position. Our main result states that in this case, there exist at least $n-1$ nontrivial obstructions (syzygies) on the Peirce spectrum of a generic NA algebra of dimension $n$. We also discuss the exceptionality of the eigenvalue $λ=\frac12$ which appears in the spectrum of idempotents in many classical examples of NA algebras and characterize its extremal properties in metrised algebras.

Persistence analysis of the age-structured population model on several patches

We consider a system of nonlinear partial differential equations that describes an age-structured population living in changing environment on $N$ patches. We prove existence and uniqueness of solution and analyze large time behavior of the system in time-independent case, for periodically changing and for irregularly varying environment. Under the assumption that every patch can be reached from every other patch, directly or through several intermediary patches, and that net reproductive operator has spectral radius larger than one, we prove that population is persistent on all patches. If the spectral radius is less or equal one, extinction on all patches is imminent.

On the exponential transform of lemniscates

It is known that the exponential transform of a quadrature domain is a rational function for which the denominator has a certain separable form. In the present paper we show that the exponential transform of lemniscate domains in general are not rational functions, of any form. Several examples are given to illustrate the general picture. The main tool used is that of polynomial and meromorphic resultants.

Minimal cubic cones via Clifford algebras

We construct two infinite families of algebraic minimal cones in $R^{n}$. The first family consists of minimal cubics given explicitly in terms of the Clifford systems. We show that the classes of congruent minimal cubics are in one to one correspondence with those of geometrically equivalent Clifford systems. As a byproduct, we prove that for any $n\ge4$, $n\ne 16k+1$, there is at least one minimal cone in $R^{n}$ given by an irreducible homogeneous cubic polynomial. The second family consists of minimal cones in $R^{m^2}$, $m\ge2$, defined by an irreducible homogeneous polynomial of degree $m$. These examples provide particular answers to the questions on algebraic minimal cones posed by Wu-Yi Hsiang in the 1960's.

On a classification of minimal cubic cones in R^n

We establish a classification of cubic minimal cones in case of the so-called radial eigencubics. Our principal result states that any radial eigencubic is either a member of the infinite family of eigencubics of Clifford type, or belongs to one of 18 exceptional families. We prove that at least 12 of the 18 families are non-empty and study their algebraic structure. We also establish that any radial eigencubic satisfies the trace identity $\det \mathrm{Hess}^3 (f)=αf$ for the Hessian matrix of $f$, where $α\in \R{}$. Another result of the paper is a correspondence between radial eigencubics and isoparametric hypersurfaces with four principal curvatures.
