Dense packings via lifts of codes to division rings

We obtain algorithmically effective versions of the dense lattice sphere packings constructed from orders in $\mathbb{Q}$-division rings by the first author. The lattices in question are lifts of suitable codes from prime characteristic to orders $\mathcal{O}$ in $\mathbb{Q}$-division rings and we prove a Minkowski--Hlawka type result for such lifts. Exploiting the additional symmetries under finite subgroups of units in $\mathcal{O}$, we show this leads to effective constructions of lattices approaching the best known lower bounds on the packing density $Δ_n$ in a variety of new dimensions $n$. This unifies and extends a number of previous constructions.

Non-vanishing of critical $L$-values in Hida families

We study the vanishing of $L(f,χ,j)$ as $f$ runs through all classical forms in a $p$-adic Hida family (including forms with arbitrarily high nebentype at $p$), $χ$ runs through all characters of $p$-power conductor, and $j$ is a critical value. We show that if infinitely many of these $L$-values vanish (apart from the ones forced to vanish by the sign of their functional equation) then this infinitude of vanishing must be exceptionally regular, so regular in fact that one can typically rule out this possibility in any given example. Indeed, we systematically verified that such regular vanishing does not occur in multiple Hida families twisted by a wide range of quadratic characters by computing the corresponding two-variable $p$-adic $L$-functions via overconvergent modular symbols.

Unlikely intersections on the $p$-adic formal ball

We investigate generalizations along the lines of the Mordell--Lang conjecture of the author's $p$-adic formal Manin--Mumford results for $n$-dimensional $p$-divisible formal groups $\mathcal{F}$. In particular, given a finitely generated subgroup $Γ$ of $\mathcal{F}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_p)$ and a closed subscheme $X\hookrightarrow \mathcal{F}$, we show under suitable assumptions that for any points $P\in X(\mathbb{C}_p)$ satisfying $nP\inΓ$ for some $n\in\mathbb{N}$, the minimal such orders $n$ are uniformly bounded whenever $X$ does not contain a formal subgroup translate of positive dimension. In contrast, we then provide counter-examples to a full $p$-adic formal Mordell--Lang result. Finally, we outline some consequences for the study of the Zariski-density of sets of automorphic objects in $p$-adic deformations. Specifically, we do so in the context of the nearly ordinary $p$-adic families of cuspidal cohomological automorphic forms for the general linear group constructed by Hida.

On $p$-adic versions of the Manin-Mumford Conjecture

We prove $p$-adic versions of a classical result in arithmetic geometry stating that an irreducible subvariety of an abelian variety with dense torsion has to be the translate of a subgroup by a torsion point. We do so in the context of certain rigid analytic spaces and formal groups over a $p$-adic field $K$ or its ring of integers $R$, respectively. In particular, we show that the rigidity results for algebraic functions underlying the so-called Manin-Mumford Conjecture generalize to suitable $p$-adic analytic functions. In the formal setting, this approach leads us to uncover purely $p$-adic Manin-Mumford type results for formal groups not coming from abelian schemes. Moreover, we observe that a version of the Tate-Voloch Conjecture holds in the $p$-adic setting: torsion points either lie squarely on a subscheme or are uniformly bounded away from it in the $p$-adic distance.

The Lang-Trotter Conjecture for products of non-CM elliptic curves

Inspired by the work of Lang-Trotter on the densities of primes with fixed Frobenius traces for elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ and by the subsequent generalization of Cojocaru-Davis-Silverberg-Stange to generic abelian varieties, we study the analogous question for abelian surfaces isogenous to products of non-CM elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$. We formulate the corresponding conjectural asymptotic, provide upper bounds, and explicitly compute (when the elliptic curves lie outside a thin set) the arithmetically significant constants appearing in the asymptotic. This allows us to provide computational evidence for the conjecture.
