Performance Analysis and Design of Two Edge Type LDPC Codes for the BEC Wiretap Channel

We consider transmission over a wiretap channel where both the main channel and the wiretapper's channel are Binary Erasure Channels (BEC). We propose a code construction method using two edge type LDPC codes based on the coset encoding scheme. Using a standard LDPC ensemble with a given threshold over the BEC, we give a construction for a two edge type LDPC ensemble with the same threshold. If the given standard LDPC ensemble has degree two variable nodes, our construction gives rise to degree one variable nodes in the code used over the main channel. This results in zero threshold over the main channel. In order to circumvent this problem, we numerically optimize the degree distribution of the two edge type LDPC ensemble. We find that the resulting ensembles are able to perform close to the boundary of the rate-equivocation region of the wiretap channel. There are two performance criteria for a coding scheme used over a wiretap channel: reliability and secrecy. The reliability measure corresponds to the probability of decoding error for the intended receiver. This can be easily measured using density evolution recursion. However, it is more challenging to characterize secrecy, corresponding to the equivocation of the message for the wiretapper. Méasson, Montanari, and Urbanke have shown how the equivocation can be measured for a broad range of standard LDPC ensembles for transmission over the BEC under the point-to-point setup. By generalizing the method of Méasson, Montanari, and Urbanke to two edge type LDPC ensembles, we show how the equivocation for the wiretapper can be computed. We find that relatively simple constructions give very good secrecy performance and are close to the secrecy capacity. However finding explicit sequences of two edge type LDPC ensembles which achieve secrecy capacity is a more difficult problem. We pose it as an interesting open problem.

Rate-Equivocation Optimal Spatially Coupled LDPC Codes for the BEC Wiretap Channel

We consider transmission over a wiretap channel where both the main channel and the wiretapper's channel are Binary Erasure Channels (BEC). We use convolutional LDPC ensembles based on the coset encoding scheme. More precisely, we consider regular two edge type convolutional LDPC ensembles. We show that such a construction achieves the whole rate-equivocation region of the BEC wiretap channel. Convolutional LDPC ensemble were introduced by Felström and Zigangirov and are known to have excellent thresholds. Recently, Kudekar, Richardson, and Urbanke proved that the phenomenon of "Spatial Coupling" converts MAP threshold into BP threshold for transmission over the BEC. The phenomenon of spatial coupling has been observed to hold for general binary memoryless symmetric channels. Hence, we conjecture that our construction is a universal rate-equivocation achieving construction when the main channel and wiretapper's channel are binary memoryless symmetric channels, and the wiretapper's channel is degraded with respect to the main channel.

Bounds on Threshold of Regular Random $k$-SAT

We consider the regular model of formula generation in conjunctive normal form (CNF) introduced by Boufkhad et. al. We derive an upper bound on the satisfiability threshold and NAE-satisfiability threshold for regular random $k$-SAT for any $k \geq 3$. We show that these bounds matches with the corresponding bound for the uniform model of formula generation. We derive lower bound on the threshold by applying the second moment method to the number of satisfying assignments. For large $k$, we note that the obtained lower bounds on the threshold of a regular random formula converges to the lower bound obtained for the uniform model. Thus, we answer the question posed in \cite{AcM06} regarding the performance of the second moment method for regular random formulas.

Bounds on Thresholds Related to Maximum Satisfiability of Regular Random Formulas

We consider the regular balanced model of formula generation in conjunctive normal form (CNF) introduced by Boufkhad, Dubois, Interian, and Selman. We say that a formula is $p$-satisfying if there is a truth assignment satisfying $1-2^{-k}+p 2^{-k}$ fraction of clauses. Using the first moment method we determine upper bound on the threshold clause density such that there are no $p$-satisfying assignments with high probability above this upper bound. There are two aspects in deriving the lower bound using the second moment method. The first aspect is, given any $p \in (0,1)$ and $k$, evaluate the lower bound on the threshold. This evaluation is numerical in nature. The second aspect is to derive the lower bound as a function of $p$ for large enough $k$. We address the first aspect and evaluate the lower bound on the $p$-satisfying threshold using the second moment method. We observe that as $k$ increases the lower bound seems to converge to the asymptotically derived lower bound for uniform model of formula generation by Achlioptas, Naor, and Peres.

Nested Polar Codes for Wiretap and Relay Channels

We show that polar codes asymptotically achieve the whole capacity-equivocation region for the wiretap channel when the wiretapper's channel is degraded with respect to the main channel, and the weak secrecy notion is used. Our coding scheme also achieves the capacity of the physically degraded receiver-orthogonal relay channel. We show simulation results for moderate block length for the binary erasure wiretap channel, comparing polar codes and two edge type LDPC codes.

On the Asymptotic Weight and Stopping Set Distribution of Regular LDPC Ensembles

We estimate the variance of weight and stopping set distribution of regular LDPC ensembles. Using this estimate and the second moment method we obtain bounds on the probability that a randomly chosen code from regular LDPC ensemble has its weight distribution and stopping set distribution close to respective ensemble averages. We are able to show that a large fraction of total number of codes have their weight and stopping set distribution close to the average.
