Column tessellations

A new class of random spatial tessellations is introduced -- the so-called column tessellations of three-dimensional space. The construction is based on a stationary planar tessellation. Each cell of the spatial tessellation is a prism whose base facet is congruent to a cell of the planar tessellation. Thus intensities, topological and metric mean values of the spatial tessellation can be calculated by suitably chosen parameters of the planar tessellation. A column tessellation is not facet-to-facet.

Constraints on the fundamental topological parameters of spatial tessellations

Tessellations of $R^3$ that use convex polyhedral cells to fill the space can be extremely complicated, especially if they are not facet-to-facet, that is, if the facets of a cell do not necessarily coincide with the facets of that cell's neighbours. In a recent paper (Weiss and Cowan, Adv.Appl.Prob. 2011), we have developed a theory which covers these complicated cases, at least with respect to their combinatorial topology. The theory required seven parameters, three of which suffice for facet-to-facet cases; the remaining four parameters are needed for the awkward adjacency concepts that arise in the general case. This current paper establishes constraints that apply to these seven parameters and so defines a permissible region within their seven-dimensional space, a region which we discover is not bounded. Our constraints in the relatively simple facet-to-facet case are also new.

Spatial STIT Tessellations -- Distributional Results for I-Segments

Three-dimensional random tessellations that are stable under iteration (STIT tessellations) are considered. They arise as a result of subsequent cell division, which implies that their cells are not face-to-face. The edges of the cell-dividing polygons are the so-called I-segments of the tessellation. The main result is an explicit formula for the distribution of the number of vertices in the relative interior of the typical I-segment. On the way of its proof other distributional identities for the typical as well as for the length-weighted typical I-segment are obtained. They provide new insight into the spatio-temporal construction process.

The combinatorial structure of spatial STIT tessellations

Spatially homogeneous random tessellations that are stable under iteration (nesting) in the 3-dimensional Euclidean space are considered, so-called STIT tessellations. They arise as outcome of a spatio-temporal process of subsequent cell division and consequently they are not facet-to-facet. The intent of this paper is to develop a detailed analysis of the combinatorial structure of such tessellations and to determine a number of new geometric mean values, for example for the neighborhood of the typical vertex. The heart of the results is a fine classification of tessellation edges based on the type of their endpoints or on the equality relationship with other types of line segments. In the background of the proofs are delicate distributional properties of spatial STIT tessellations.
