admcycles -- a Sage package for calculations in the tautological ring of the moduli space of stable curves

The tautological ring of the moduli space of stable curves has been studied extensively in the last decades. We present a SageMath implementation of many core features of this ring. This includes lists of generators and their products, intersection numbers and verification of tautological relations. Maps between tautological rings induced by functoriality, that is pushforwards and pullbacks under gluing and forgetful maps, are implemented. Furthermore, many interesting cycle classes, such as the double ramification cycles, strata of k-differentials and hyperelliptic or bielliptic cycles are available. In this paper we show how to apply the package, including concrete example computations.

Diagonal changes for surfaces in hyperelliptic components

We describe geometric algorithms that generalize the classical continued fraction algorithm for the torus to all translation surfaces in hyperelliptic components of translation surfaces. We show that these algorithms produce all saddle connections which are best approximations in a geometric sense, which generalizes the notion of best approximation for the classical continued fraction. In addition, they allow to list all systoles along a Teichmueller geodesic and all bispecial words which appear in the symbolic coding of linear flows. The elementary moves of the described algorithms provide a geometric invertible extension of the renormalization moves introduced by S. Ferenczi and L. Zamboni for the corresponding interval exchange transformations.

Return words of linear involutions and fundamental groups

We investigate the natural codings of linear involutions. We deduce from the geometric representation of linear involutions as Poincaré maps of measured foliations a suitable definition of return words which yields that the set of first return words to a given word is a symmetric basis of the free group on the underlying alphabet $A$. The set of first return words with respect to a subgroup of finite index $G$ of the free group on $A$ is also proved to be a symmetric basis of $G$.

Weak mixing directions in non-arithmetic Veech surfaces

We show that the billiard in a regular polygon is weak mixing in almost every invariant surface, except in the trivial cases which give rise to lattices in the plane (triangle, square and hexagon). More generally, we study the problem of prevalence of weak mixing for the directional flow in an arbitrary non-arithmetic Veech surface, and show that the Hausdorff dimension of the set of non-weak mixing directions is not full. We also provide a necessary condition, verified for instance by the Veech surface corresponding to the billiard in the pentagon, for the set of non-weak mixing directions to have positive Hausdorff dimension.

Un contre-exemple à la réciproque du critère de Forni pour la positivité des exposants de Lyapunov du cocycle de Kontsevich-Zorich

We introduce two square-tiled surfaces, one with $8$ squares inside $Ω\mathcal{M}_3(2,2)$, and the other with $9$ squares inside $Ω\mathcal{M}_4(3,3)$, respectively. In these examples, the dimensions of the isotropic subspaces (in absolute homology) generated by the waist curves of the maximal cylinders in any fixed rational direction are $2$ and $3$ respectively. Hence, a geometrical criterion of G. Forni for the non-uniform hyperbolicity of Kontsevich-Zorich (KZ) cocycle can not be applied to these examples. Nevertheless, we prove that there are no vanishing exponents and the spectrum is simple for these two square-tiled surfaces. In particular, the non-vanishing of exponents of KZ cocycle for a regular measure doesn't imply that the support of this measure contains a completely periodic surface whose waist curves of maximal cylinders generates a Lagrangian subspace in its absolute homology.

Balancedness of Arnoux-Rauzy and Brun words

We study balancedness properties of words given by the Arnoux-Rauzy and Brun multi-dimensional continued fraction algorithms. We show that almost all Brun words on 3 letters and Arnoux-Rauzy words over arbitrary alphabets are finitely balanced; in particular, boundedness of the strong partial quotients implies balancedness. On the other hand, we provide examples of unbalanced Brun words on 3 letters.

Divergent directions in some periodic wind-tree models

The periodic wind-tree model is a family T(a,b) of billiards in the plane in which identical rectangular scatterers of size axb are disposed at each integer point. It was proven by P. Hubert, S. Lelièvre and S. Troubetzkoy (arXiv:0912.2891v1) that for a residual set of parameters (a,b) the billiard flow in T(a,b) is recurrent in almost every direction. We prove that for many parameters (a,b) there exists a set S of angles of positive Hausdorff dimension such that every billiard trajectory in T(a,b) with initial angle in S is self-avoiding. In particular, the flow in a direction of S is divergent.
