String Backgrounds of the Yang-Baxter Deformed $AdS_4\times\mathbb{CP}^3$ Superstring

We build string backgrounds for Yang-Baxter deformations of the $AdS_4\times\mathbb{CP}^3$ superstring generated by $r$-matrices satisfying the classical Yang-Baxter equation. We obtain the metric and the NS-NS two-form of the gravity dual corresponding to noncommutative and dipole deformations of ABJM theory, as well as a deformed background with Schrödinger symmetry. The first two backgrounds may also be found by TsT transformations while for the last background we get a new family of non-relativistic ABJM theories with Schrödinger symmetry.

Yang-Baxter Deformations of the $AdS_5\times T^{1,1}$ Superstring and their Backgrounds

We consider three-parameter Yang-Baxter deformations of the $AdS_5\times T^{1,1}$ superstring for abelian $r$-matrices which are solutions of the classical Yang-Baxter equation. We find two new backgrounds which are dual to the dipole deformed Klebanov-Witten gauge theory and to the nonrelativistic Klebanov-Witten gauge theory with Schrödinger symmetry

Gauge Theory Formulations for Continuous and Higher Spin Fields

We consider a gauge theory action for continuous spin particles formulated in a spacetime enlarged by an extra coordinate recently proposed by Schuster and Toro. It requires one scalar gauge field and has two local symmetries. We show that the local symmetries are reducible in the sense that the parameters also have a local symmetry. Using reducibility we get an action which has two scalar gauge fields and a reducible but simpler local symmetry. We then show how this action and equations of motion are related to previously proposed formulations for continuous spin particles and higher spin theories. We also discuss the physical contents of each formulation to reveal the physical degrees of freedom.

Very Special Relativity and Lorentz Violating Theories

Very special relativity (VSR) keeps the main features of special relativity but breaks rotational invariance. It can not be regarded as a fundamental symmetry of nature because many observed phenomena depend on the existence of Lorentz boosts. However, within the scope of Lorentz violating theories it can have a role since it is breaking Lorentz symmetry in a very mild way. In this context, when VSR terms are incorporated in a Lorentz invariant theory several possibilities are allowed. In order to generate such terms systematically we start with a formulation for a spinning particle in VSR. It is then coupled minimally to the electromagnetic field and a gyromagnetic factor is added to give rise to a magnetic moment. In order to analyze the effects of VSR in Thomas precession a spin vector is then proposed in terms of the spinning particle variables. It is then found the VSR contributions to the equation which determines the spin precession angular velocity.

Ambiguities in the Seiberg-Witten Map and Emergent Gravity

The theta expansion of the Seiberg-Witten map has ambiguities which can be removed by a gauge transformation and/or a field redefinition. In the context of emergent gravity such a field redefinition changes the emerging metric and requires the presence of non-minimal gravitational couplings. It also requires that a real scalar field becomes a scalar density and allows the introduction of a potential. We also find that the potential can have only one term and that a quartic interaction is not allowed. Even though the metric depends on the ambiguity we show that the dispersion relation does not present any sign of it. A proposal for an exact Seiberg-Witten map is used to derive the full metric going beyond the linearized limit.

Non Abelian Fields in Very Special Relativity

We study non-Abelian fields in the context of very special relativity (VSR). For this we define the covariant derivative and the gauge field gauge transformations, both of them involving a fixed null vector $n_μ$, related to the VSR breaking of the Lorentz group to the Hom(2) or Sim(2) subgroups. As in the Abelian case the gauge field becomes massive. Moreover we show that the VSR gauge transformations form a closed algebra. We then write actions coupling the gauge field to various matter fields (bosonic and fermionic). We mention how we can use the spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism to give a flavor dependent VSR mass to the gauge bosons. Finally, we quantize the model using the BRST formalism to fix the gauge. The model is renormalizable and unitary and for non abelian groups, asymptotically free.

Notes on beta-deformations of the pure spinor superstring in AdS(5) x S(5)

We study the properties of the vertex operator for the beta-deformation of the superstring in AdS(5) x S(5) in the pure spinor formalism. We discuss the action of supersymmetry on the infinitesimal beta-deformation, the application of the homological perturbation theory, and the relation between the worldsheet description and the spacetime supergravity description.

The Transition Amplitude for 2T Physics

We present the transition amplitude for a particle moving in a space with two times and D space dimensions having a Sp(2,R) local symmetry and an SO(D,2) rigid symmetry. It was obtained from the BRST-BFV quantization with a unique gauge choice. We show that by constraining the initial and final points of this amplitude to lie on some hypersurface of the D+2 space the resulting amplitude reproduces well known systems in lower dimensions. This provides an alternative physical interpretation for two times physics which is derived in a single framework.

Triviality of Higher Derivative Theories

We show that some higher derivative theories have a BRST symmetry. This symmetry is due to the higher derivative structure and is not associated to any gauge invariance. If physical states are defined as those in the BRST cohomology then the only physical state is the vacuum. All negative norm states, characteristic of higher derivative theories, are removed from the physical sector. As a consequence, unitarity is recovered but the S-matrix is trivial. We show that a class of higher derivative quantum gravity theories have this BRST symmetry so that they are consistent as quantum field theories. Furthermore, this BRST symmetry may be present in both relativistic and non-relativistic systems.

Energy and the AdS/CFT Correspondence

We consider a scalar field theory on AdS in both minimally and non-minimally coupled cases. We show that there exist constraints which arise in the quantization of the scalar field theory on AdS which cannot be reproduced through the usual AdS/CFT prescription. We argue that the usual energy, defined through the stress-energy tensor, is not the natural one to be considered in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We analyze a new definition of the energy which makes use of the Noether current corresponding to time displacements in global coordinates. We compute the new energy for Dirichlet, Neumann and mixed boundary conditions on the scalar field and for both the minimally and non-minimally coupled cases. Then, we perform the quantization of the scalar field theory on AdS showing that, for `regular' and `irregular' modes, the new energy is conserved, positive and finite. We show that the quantization gives rise, in a natural way, to a generalized AdS/CFT prescription which maps to the boundary all the information contained in the bulk. In particular, we show that the divergent local terms of the on-shell action contain information about the Legendre transformed generating functional, and that the new constraints for which the irregular modes propagate in the bulk are the same constraints for which such divergent local terms cancel out. In this situation, the addition of counterterms is not required. We also show that there exist particular cases for which the unitarity bound is reached, and the conformal dimension becomes independent of the effective mass. This phenomenon has no bulk counterpart.

Gauge Dependence in the AdS/CFT Correspondence

We consider the AdS space formulation of the classical dynamics deriving from the Stueckelberg Lagrangian. The on-shell action is shown to be free of infrared singularities as the vector boson mass tends to zero. In this limit the model becomes Maxwell theory formulated in an arbitrary covariant gauge. Then we use the AdS/CFT correspondence to compute the two-point correlation functions on the boundary. It is shown that the gauge dependence concentrates on the contact terms.

The Several Guises of the BRST Symmetry

We present several forms in which the BRST transformations of QCD in covariant gauges can be cast. They can be non-local and even not manifestly covariant. These transformations may be obtained in the path integral formalism by non standard integrations in the ghost sector or by performing changes of ghost variables which leave the action and the path integral measure invariant. For different changes of ghost variables in the BRST and anti-BRST transformations these two transformations no longer anticommute.
