On two and three periodic Lyness difference equations

We describe the sequences {x_n}_n given by the non-autonomous second order Lyness difference equations x_{n+2}=(a_n+x_{n+1})/x_n, where {a_n}_n is either a 2-periodic or a 3-periodic sequence of positive values and the initial conditions x_1,x_2 are as well positive. We also show an interesting phenomenon of the discrete dynamical systems associated to some of these difference equations: the existence of one oscillation of their associated rotation number functions. This behavior does not appear for the autonomous Lyness difference equations.

On Poncelet's maps

Given two ellipses, one surrounding the other one, Poncelet introduced a map $P$ from the exterior one to itself by using the tangent lines to the interior ellipse. This procedure can be extended to any two smooth, nested and convex ovals and we call this type of maps Poncelet's maps. We recall what he proved around 1814 in the dynamical systems language: In the two ellipses case and when the rotation number of P is rational there exists a natural number such that P^n is the identity, or in other words, the Poncelet's map is conjugated to a rational rotation. In this paper we study general Poncelet's maps and give several examples of algebraic ovals where the corresponding Poncelet's map has a rational rotation number and it is not conjugated to a rotation. Finally, we also provide a new proof of Poncelet's result based on dynamical tools.

Some properties of the k-dimensional Lyness' map

This paper is devoted to study some properties of the k-dimensional Lyness' map. Our main result presentes a rational vector field that gives a Lie symmetry for F. This vector field is used, for k less or equal to 5 to give information about the nature of the invariant sets under F. When k is odd, we also present a new (as far as we know) first integral for F^2 which allows to deduce in a very simple way several properties of the dynamical system generated by F. In particular for this case we prove that, except on a given codimension one algebraic set, none of the positive initial conditions can be a periodic point of odd period.

Complete integrable systems with unconfined singularities

We prove that any globally periodic rational discrete system in K^k(where K denotes either R or C), has unconfined singularities, zero algebraic entropy and it is complete integrable (that is, it has as many functionally independent first integrals as the dimension of the phase space). In fact, for some of these systems the unconfined singularities are the key to obtain first integrals using the Darboux-type method of integrability.

Studying discrete dynamical systems trough differential equations

In this paper we consider dynamical systems generated by a diffeomorphism F defined on U an open subset of R^n, and give conditions over F which imply that their dynamics can be understood by studying the flow of an associated differential equation, $\dot x=X(x),$ also defined on U. In particular the case where F has n-1 functionally independent first integrals is considered. In this case X is constructed by imposing that it shares with $F$ the same set of first integrals and that the functional equation $μ(F(x))=\det((DF(x))μ(x),$ for x in U has some non-zero solution. Several examples for n=2,3 are presented, most of them coming from several well-known difference equations.

Dynamics of the third order Lyness' difference equation

This paper studies the iterates of the third order Lyness' recurrence $x_{k+3}=(a+x_{k+1}+x_{k+2})/x_k,$ with positive initial conditions, being $a$ also a positive parameter. It is known that for $a=1$ all the sequences generated by this recurrence are 8-periodic. We prove that for each $a\ne1$ there are infinitely many initial conditions giving rise to periodic sequences which have almost all the even periods and that for a full measure set of initial conditions the sequences generated by the recurrence are dense in either one or two disjoint bounded intervals of $\R.$ Finally we show that the set of initial conditions giving rise to periodic sequences of odd period is contained in a codimension one algebraic variety (so it has zero measure) and that for an open set of values of $a$ it also contains all the odd numbers, except finitely many of them.
