Dynamics of meandering spiral waves with weak lattice perturbations

Re-entrant spiral waves are observed in many different situations in nature, perhaps most importantly in excitable electrophysiological tissue where they are believed to be responsible for pathological conditions such as cardiac arrhythmias, epileptic seizures and hallucinations. Mathematically, spiral waves occur as solutions to systems of reaction-diffusion partial differential equations (RDPDEs) which are frequently used as models for electrophysiological phenomena. Because of the invariance of these RDPDEs with respect to the Euclidean group SE(2) of planar translations and rotations, much progress has been made in understanding the dynamics and bifurcations of spiral waves using the theory of group-equivariant dynamical systems. In reality however, Euclidean symmetry is at best an approximation. Inhomogeneities and anisotropy in the medium of propagation of the waves break the Euclidean symmetry, and can lead to such phenomena as anchoring and drifting. In this paper, we study the effects on quasi-periodic meandering spiral waves of a small perturbation which breaks the continuous SE(2) symmetry, but preserves the symmetry of a regular square lattice.

A degenerate Hopf bifurcation in retarded functional differential equations, and applications to endemic bubbles

In this paper, we study degenerate Hopf bifurcations in a class of parametrized retarded functional differential equations. Specifically, we are interested in the case where the eigenvalue crossing condition of the classical Hopf bifurcation theorem is violated. Our approach is based on center manifold reduction and Poincare-Birkhoff normal forms, and a singularity theoretical classification of this degenerate Hopf bifurcation. Our results are then applied to a recently developed SIS model incorporating a delayed behavioral response. We show that the phenomenon of endemic bubbles, which is characterized by a branch of periodic solutions which bifurcates from the endemic equilibrium at some value of the basic reproduction number R0, and then reconnects to the endemic equilibrium at a larger value of R0, originates in a codimension-two organizing center where the eigenvalue crossing condition for the Hopf bifurcation theorem is violated.

Lattice symmetry breaking perturbations for spiral waves

Spiral waves in two-dimensional excitable media have been observed experimentally and studied extensively. It is now well-known that the symmetry properties of the medium of propagation drives many of the dynamics and bifurcations which are experimentally observed for these waves. Also, symmetry-breaking induced by boundaries, inhomogeneities and anisotropy have all been shown to lead to different dynamical regimes as to that which is predicted for mathematical models which assume infinite homogeneous and isotropic planar geometry. Recent mathematical analyses incorporating the concept of forced symmetry-breaking from the Euclidean group of all planar translations and rotations have given model-independent descriptions of the effects of media imperfections on spiral wave dynamics. In this paper, we continue this program by considering rotating waves in dynamical systems which are small perturbations of a Euclidean-equivariant dynamical system, but for which the perturbation preserves only the symmetry of a regular square lattice.

Realizability of the normal form for the triple-zero nilpotency in a class of delayed nonlinear oscillators

The effects of delayed feedback terms on nonlinear oscillators has been extensively studied, and have important applications in many areas of science and engineering. We study a particular class of second-order delay-differential equations near a point of triple-zero nilpotent bifurcation. Using center manifold and normal form reduction, we show that the three-dimensional nonlinear normal form for the triple-zero bifurcation can be fully realized at any given order for appropriate choices of nonlinearities in the original delay-differential equation.
