Adler-Oevel-Ragnisco type operators and Poisson vertex algebras

The theory of triples of Poisson brackets and related integrable systems, based on a classical R-matrix R in End_F(g), where g is a finite dimensional associative algebra over a field F viewed as a Lie algebra, was developed by Oevel-Ragnisco and Li-Parmentier [OR89,LP89]. In the present paper we develop an "affine" analogue of this theory by introducing the notion of a continuous Poisson vertex algebra and constructing triples of Poisson lambda-brackets. We introduce the corresponding Adler type identities and apply them to integrability of hierarchies of Hamiltonian PDEs.

Orbifolds of Lattice Vertex Algebras

To a positive-definite even lattice $Q$, one can associate the lattice vertex algebra $V_Q$, and any automorphism $σ$ of $Q$ lifts to an automorphism of $V_Q$. In this paper, we investigate the orbifold vertex algebra $V_Q^σ$, which consists of the elements of $V_Q$ fixed under $σ$, in the case when $σ$ has prime order. We describe explicitly the irreducible $V_Q^σ$-modules, compute their characters, and determine the modular transformations of characters. As an application, we find the asymptotic and quantum dimensions of all irreducible $V_Q^σ$-modules. We consider in detail the cases when the order of $σ$ is $2$ or $3$, as well as the case of permutation orbifolds.

Classical and variational Poisson cohomology

We prove that, for a Poisson vertex algebra V, the canonical injective homomorphism of the variational cohomology of V to its classical cohomology is an isomorphism, provided that V, viewed as a differential algebra, is an algebra of differential polynomials in finitely many differential variables. This theorem is one of the key ingredients in the computation of vertex algebra cohomology. For its proof, we introduce the sesquilinear Hochschild and Harrison cohomology complexes and prove a vanishing theorem for the symmetric sesquilinear Harrison cohomology of the algebra of differential polynomials in finitely many differential variables.

Computation of cohomology of Lie conformal and Poisson vertex algebras

We develop methods for computation of Poisson vertex algebra cohomology. This cohomology is computed for the free bosonic and fermionic Poisson vertex (super)algebras, as well as for the universal affine and Virasoro Poisson vertex algebras. We establish finite dimensionality of this cohomology for conformal Poisson vertex (super)algebras that are finitely and freely generated by elements of positive conformal weight.

Computation of cohomology of vertex algebras

We review cohomology theories corresponding to the chiral and classical operads. The first one is the cohomology theory of vertex algebras, while the second one is the classical cohomology of Poisson vertex algebras (PVA), and we construct a spectral sequence relating them. Since in "good" cases the classical PVA cohomology coincides with the variational PVA cohomology and there are well-developed methods to compute the latter, this enables us to compute the cohomology of vertex algebras in many interesting cases. Finally, we describe a unified approach to integrability through vanishing of the first cohomology, which is applicable to both classical and quantum systems of Hamiltonian PDEs.

Irreducible modules over finite simple Lie pseudoalgebras III. Primitive pseudoalgebras of type H

A Lie conformal algebra is an algebraic structure that encodes the singular part of the operator product expansion of chiral fields in conformal field theory. A Lie pseudoalgebra is a generalization of this structure, for which the algebra of polynomials k[\partial] in the indeterminate is replaced by the universal enveloping algebra U(d) of a finite-dimensional Lie algebra d over the base field k. The finite (i.e., finitely generated over U(d)) simple Lie pseudoalgebras were classified in our 2001 paper [BDK]. The complete list consists of primitive Lie pseudoalgebras of type W, S, H, and K, and of current Lie pseudoalgebras over them or over simple finite-dimensional Lie algebras. The present paper is the third in our series on representation theory of simple Lie pseudoalgebras. In the first paper, we showed that any finite irreducible module over a primitive Lie pseudoalgebra of type W or S is either an irreducible tensor module or the image of the differential in a member of the pseudo de Rham complex. In the second paper, we established a similar result for primitive Lie pseudoalgebras of type K, with the pseudo de Rham complex replaced by a certain reduction, called the contact pseudo de Rham complex. This reduction in the context of contact geometry was discovered by M. Rumin [Rum]. In the present paper, we show that for primitive Lie pseudoalgebras of type H, a similar to type K result holds with the contact pseudo de Rham complex replaced by a suitable complex. However, the type H case in more involved, since the annihilation algebra is not the corresponding Lie-Cartan algebra, as in other cases, but an irreducible central extension. When the action of the center of the annihilation algebra is trivial, this complex is related to work by M. Eastwood [E] on conformally symplectic geometry, and we call it conformally symplectic pseudo de Rham complex.

p-reduced multicomponent KP hierarchy and classical W-algebras W(gl_N,p)

For each partition p of an integer N \geq 2, consisting of r parts, an integrable hierarchy of Lax type Hamiltonian PDE has been constructed recently by some of us. In the present paper we show that any tau-function of the p-reduced r-component KP hierarchy produces a solution of this integrable hierarchy. Along the way we provide an algorithm for the explicit construction of the generators of the corresponding classical W-algebra W(gl_N,p), and write down explicit formulas for evolution of these generators along the Hamiltonian flows.

Polynomial Tau-functions of the KP, BKP, and the s-Component KP Hierarchies

We show that any polynomial tau-function of the s-component KP and the BKP hierarchies can be interpreted as a zero mode of an appropriate combinatorial generating function. As an application, we obtain explicit formulas for all polynomial tau-functions of these hierarchies in terms of Schur polynomials and Q-Schur polynomials respectively. We also obtain formulas for polynomial tau-functions of the reductions of the s-component KP hierarchy associated to partitions in s parts.

An operadic approach to vertex algebra and Poisson vertex algebra cohomology

We translate the construction of the chiral operad by Beilinson and Drinfeld to the purely algebraic language of vertex algebras. Consequently, the general construction of a cohomology complex associated to a linear operad produces a vertex algebra cohomology complex. Likewise, the associated graded of the chiral operad leads to a classical operad, which produces a Poisson vertex algebra cohomology complex. The latter is closely related to the variational Poisson cohomology studied by two of the authors.

On the structure of quantum vertex algebras

A definition of a quantum vertex algebra, which is a deformation of a vertex algebra, was proposed by Etingof and Kazhdan in 1998. In a nutshell, a quantum vertex algebra is a braided state-field correspondence which satisfies associativity and braided locality axioms. We develop a structure theory of quantum vertex algebras, parallel to that of vertex algebras. In particular, we introduce braided n-products for a braided state-field correspondence and prove for quantum vertex algebras a version of the Borcherds identity.

A remark on boundary level admissible representations

Recently a remarkable map between 4-dimensional superconformal field theories and vertex algebras has been constructed \cite{BLLPRV15}. This has lead to new insights in the theory of characters of vertex algebras. In particular it was observed that in some cases these characters decompose in nice products \cite{XYY16}, \cite{Y16}. The purpose of this note is to explain the latter phenomena. Namely, we point out that it is immediate by our character formula \cite{KW88}, \cite{KW89} that in the case of a \textit{boundary level} the characters of admissible representations of affine Kac-Moody algebras and the corresponding $W$-algebras decompose in products in terms of the Jacobi form $ \vartheta_{11}(τ, z)$.

Classical W-algebras for gl_N and associated integrable Hamiltonian hierarchies

We apply the new method for constructing integrable Hamiltonian hierarchies of Lax type equations developed in our previous paper, to show that all W-algebras W(gl_N,f) carry such a hierarchy. As an application, we show that all vector constrained KP hierarchies and their matrix generalizations are obtained from these hierarchies by Dirac reduction, which provides the former with a bi-Poisson structure.

Double Poisson vertex algebras and non-commutative Hamiltonian equations

We develop the formalism of double Poisson vertex algebras (local and non-local) aimed at the study of non-commutative Hamiltionan PDEs. This is a generalization of the theory of double Poisson algebras, developed by Van den Bergh, which is used in the study of Hamiltonian ODEs. We apply our theory of double Poisson vertex algebras to non-commutative KP and Gelfand-Dickey hierarchies. We also construct the related non-commutative de Rham and variational complexes.

Representations of affine superalgebras and mock theta functions III

We study modular invariance of normalized supercharacters of tame integrable modules over an affine Lie superalgebra, associated to an arbitrary basic Lie superalgebra $ \mathfrak{g}. $ For this we develop a several step modification process of multivariable mock theta functions, where at each step a Zwegers' type "modifier" is used. We show that the span of the resulting modified normalized supercharacters is $ SL_2(\mathbb{Z}) $-invariant, with the transformation matrix equal, in the case the Killing form on $\mathfrak{g}$ is non-degenerate, to that for the subalgebra $ \mathfrak{g}^! $ of $ \mathfrak{g}, $ orthogonal to a maximal isotropic set of roots of $ \mathfrak{g}. $

Adler-Gelfand-Dickey approach to classical W-algebras within the theory of Poisson vertex algebras

We put the Adler-Gelfand-Dickey approach to classical W-algebras in the framework of Poisson vertex algebras. We show how to recover the bi-Poisson structure of the KP hierarchy, together with its generalizations and reduction to the N-th KdV hierarchy, using the formal distribution calculus and the lambda-bracket formalism. We apply the Lenard-Magri scheme to prove integrability of the corresponding hierarchies. We also give a simple proof of a theorem of Kupershmidt and Wilson in this framework. Based on this approach, we generalize all these results to the matrix case. In particular, we find (non-local) bi-Poisson structures of the matrix KP and the matrix N-th KdV hierarchies, and we prove integrability of the N-th matrix KdV hierarchy.

Classical W-algebras and generalized Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchies for minimal and short nilpotents

We derive explicit formulas for lambda-brackets of the affine classical W-algebras attached to the minimal and short nilpotent elements of any simple Lie algebra g. This is used to compute explicitly the first non-trivial PDE of the corresponding intgerable generalized Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchies. It turns out that a reduction of the equation corresponding to a short nilpotent is Svinolupov's equation attached to a simple Jordan algebra, while a reduction of the equation corresponding to a minimal nilpotent is an integrable Hamiltonian equation on 2h-3 functions, where h is the dual Coxeter number of g. In the case when g is sl_2 both these equations coincide with the KdV equation. In the case when g is not of type C_n, we associate to the minimal nilpotent element of g yet another generalized Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchy.

On integrability of some bi-Hamiltonian two field systems of PDE

We continue the study of integrability of bi-Hamiltonian systems with a compatible pair of local Poisson structures (H_0,H_1), where H_0 is a strongly skew-adjoint operator. This is applied to the construction of some new two field integrable systems of PDE by taking the pair (H_0,H_1) in the family of compatible Poisson structures that arose in the study of cohomology of moduli spaces of curves.

Representations of affine superalgebras and mock theta functions II

We show that the normalized supercharacters of principal admissible modules, associated to each integrable atypical module over the affine Lie superalgebra $\widehat{sl}_{2|1}$ can be modified, using Zwegers' real analytic corrections, to form an $SL_2(\mathbf{Z})$-invariant family of functions. Using a variation of Zwegers' correction, we obtain a similar result for $\widehat{osp}_{3|2}$. Applying the quantum Hamiltonian reduction, this leads to new families of positive energy modules over the $N=2$ (resp. $N=3$) superconformal algebras with central charge $c=3 (1-\frac{2m+2}{M})$, where $m \in \mathbf{Z}_{\geq 0}, M \in \mathbf{Z}_{\geq 2}$, gcd$(2m+2,M)=1$ if $m>0$ (resp. $c=-3\frac{2m+1}{M}$, where $m \in \mathbf{Z}_{\geq 0}, M \in \mathbf{Z}_{\geq 2}$ gcd$(4m +2, M) =1)$, whose modified supercharacters form an $SL_2(\mathbf{Z})$-invariant family of functions.

Structure of classical (finite and affine) W-algebras

First, we derive an explicit formula for the Poisson bracket of the classical finite W-algebra W^{fin}(g,f), the algebra of polynomial functions on the Slodowy slice associated to a simple Lie algebra g and its nilpotent element f. On the other hand, we produce an explicit set of generators and we derive an explicit formula for the Poisson vertex algebra structure of the classical affine W-algebra W(g,f). As an immediate consequence, we obtain a Poisson algebra isomorphism between W^{fin}(g,f) and the Zhu algebra of W(g,f). We also study the generalized Miura map for classical W-algebras.

Classical W-algebras and generalized Drinfeld-Sokolov bi-Hamiltonian systems within the theory of Poisson vertex algebras

We provide a description of the Drinfeld-Sokolov Hamiltonian reduction for the construction of classical W-algebras within the framework of Poisson vertex algebras. In this context, the gauge group action on the phase space is translated in terms of (the exponential of) a Lie conformal algebra action on the space of functions. Following the ideas of Drinfeld and Sokolov, we then establish under certain sufficient conditions the applicability of the Lenard-Magri scheme of integrability and the existence of the corresponding integrable hierarchy of bi-Hamiltonian equations.

Non-local Poisson structures and applications to the theory of integrable systems

We develop a rigorous theory of non-local Poisson structures, built on the notion of a non-local Poisson vertex algebra. As an application, we find conditions that guarantee applicability of the Lenard-Magri scheme of integrability to a pair of compatible non-local Poisson structures. We apply this scheme to several such pairs, proving thereby integrability of various evolution equations, as well as hyperbolic equations.

Representations of affine superalgebras and mock theta functions

We show that the normalized supercharacters of principal admissible modules over the affine Lie superalgebra $\hat{s\ell}_{2|1}$ (resp. $\hat{ps\ell}_{2|2}$) can be modified, using Zwegers' real analytic corrections, to form a modular (resp. $S$-) invariant family of functions. Applying the quantum Hamiltonian reduction, this leads to a new family of positive energy modules over the N=2 (resp. N=4) superconformal algebras with central charge $3(1-\frac{2m+2}{M})$, where $m \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$, $M\in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 2}$, $\gcd(2m+2,M)=1$ if $m>0$ (resp. $6(\frac{m}{M}-1)$, where $m \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 1}, M\in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 2}$, $\gcd(2m,M)=1$ if $m>1$), whose modified characters and supercharacters form a modular invariant family.

Singular degree of a rational matrix pseudodifferential operator

In our previous work we studied minimal fractional decompositions of a rational matrix pseudodifferential operator: H=A/B, where A and B are matrix differential operators, and B is non-degenerate of minimal possible degree deg(B). In the present paper we introduce the singular degree sdeg(H)=deg(B), and show that for an arbitrary rational expression H=sum_a (A^a_1)/(B^a_1)...(A^a_n)/(B^a_n), we have that sdeg(H) is less than or equal to sum_{a,i} deg(B^a_i). If the equality holds, we call such an expression minimal. We study the properties of the singular degree and of minimal rational expressions. These results are important for the computations involved in the Lenard-Magri scheme of integrability.

The variational Poisson cohomology

It is well known that the validity of the so called Lenard-Magri scheme of integrability of a bi-Hamiltonian PDE can be established if one has some precise information on the corresponding 1st variational Poisson cohomology for one of the two Hamiltonian operators. In the first part of the paper we explain how to introduce various cohomology complexes, including Lie superalgebra and Poisson cohomology complexes, and basic and reduced Lie conformal algebra and Poisson vertex algebra cohomology complexes, by making use of the corresponding universal Lie superalebra or Lie conformal superalgebra. The most relevant are certain subcomplexes of the basic and reduced Poisson vertex algebra cohomology complexes, which we identify (non-canonically) with the generalized de Rham complex and the generalized variational complex. In the second part of the paper we compute the cohomology of the generalized de Rham complex, and, via a detailed study of the long exact sequence, we compute the cohomology of the generalized variational complex for any quasiconstant coefficient Hamiltonian operator with invertible leading coefficient. For the latter we use some differential linear algebra developed in the Appendix.

Denominator identities for finite-dimensional Lie superalgebras and Howe duality for compact dual pairs

We provide formulas for the denominator and superdenominator of a basic classical type Lie superalgebra for any set of positive roots. We establish a connection between certain sets of positive roots and the theory of reductive dual pairs of real Lie groups. As an application of our formulas, we recover the Theta correspondence for compact dual pairs. Along the way we give an explicit description of the real forms of basic classical type Lie superalgebras.

Rational matrix pseudodifferential operators

The skewfield K(d) of rational pseudodifferential operators over a differential field K is the skewfield of fractions of the algebra of differential operators K[d]. In our previous paper we showed that any H from K(d) has a minimal fractional decomposition H=AB^(-1), where A,B are elements of K[d], B is non-zero, and any common right divisor of A and B is a non-zero element of K. Moreover, any right fractional decomposition of H is obtained by multiplying A and B on the right by the same non-zero element of K[d]. In the present paper we study the ring M_n(K(d)) of nxn matrices over the skewfield K(d). We show that similarly, any H from M_n(K(d)) has a minimal fractional decomposition H=AB^(-1), where A,B are elements of M_n(K[d]), B is non-degenerate, and any common right divisor of A and B is an invertible element of the ring M_n(K[d]). Moreover, any right fractional decomposition of H is obtained by multiplying A and B on the right by the same non-degenerate element of M_n(K [d]). We give several equivalent definitions of the minimal fractional decomposition. These results are applied to the study of maximal isotropicity property, used in the theory of Dirac structures.

Some algebraic properties of differential operators

First, we study the subskewfield of rational pseudodifferential operators over a differential field K generated in the skewfield of pseudodifferential operators over K by the subalgebra of all differential operators. Second, we show that the Dieudonne' determinant of a matrix pseudodifferential operator with coefficients in a differential subring A of K lies in the integral closure of A in K, and we give an example of a 2x2 matrix differential operator with coefficients in A whose Dieudonne' determiant does not lie in A.

Essential variational Poisson cohomology

In our recent paper [DSK11] we computed the dimension of the variational Poisson cohomology for any quasiconstant coefficient matrix differential operator K of arbitrary order with invertible leading coefficient, provided that the algebra of differential functions is normal and is an algebra over a linearly closed differential field. In the present paper we show that, for K skewadjoint, this cohomology, viewed as a Z-graded Lie superalgebra, is isomorphic to the finite dimensional Lie superalgebra of Hamiltonian vector fields over a Grassman algebra. We also prove that the subalgebra of `essential' variational Poisson cohomology, consisting of classes vanishing on the Casimirs of K, is zero. This vanishing result has applications to the theory of bi-Hamiltonian structures and their deformations. At the end of the paper we consider also the translation invariant case.

Classification of linearly compact simple N=6 3-algebras

$N\leq 8$ 3-algebras have recently appeared in N-supersymmetric 3-dimensional Chern-Simons gauge theories. In our previous paper we classified linearly compact simple N = 8 n-algebras for any $n \geq 3$. In the present paper we classify linearly compact simple N = 6 3-algebras, using their correspondence with simple linearly compact Lie superalgebras with a consistent short Z-grading, endowed with a graded conjugation. We also briefly discuss N = 5 3-algebras.

Classification of simple linearly compact n-Lie superalgebras

We classify simple linearly compact n-Lie superalgebras with n>2 over a field F of characteristic 0. The classification is based on a bijective correspondence between non-abelian n-Lie superalgebras and transitive Z-graded Lie superalgebras of the form L=\oplus_{j=-1}^{n-1} L_j, such that L_{-1}=g, where dim L_{n-1}=1, L_{-1} and L_{n-1} generate L, and [L_j, L_{n-j-1}] =0 for all j, thereby reducing it to the known classification of simple linearly compact Lie superalgebras and their Z-gradings. The list consists of four examples, one of them being the n+1-dimensional vector product n-Lie algebra, and the remaining three infinite-dimensional n-Lie algebras.

Irreducible Modules over Finite Simple Lie Pseudoalgebras II. Primitive Pseudoalgebras of Type K

One of the algebraic structures that has emerged recently in the study of the operator product expansions of chiral fields in conformal field theory is that of a Lie conformal algebra. A Lie pseudoalgebra is a generalization of the notion of a Lie conformal algebra for which C[\partial] is replaced by the universal enveloping algebra H of a finite-dimensional Lie algebra. The finite (i.e., finitely generated over H) simple Lie pseudoalgebras were classified in our previous work. The present paper is the second in our series on representation theory of simple Lie pseudoalgebras. In the first paper we showed that any finite irreducible module over a simple Lie pseudoalgebra of type W or S is either an irreducible tensor module or the kernel of the differential in a member of the pseudo de Rham complex. In the present paper we establish a similar result for Lie pseudoalgebras of type K, with the pseudo de Rham complex replaced by a certain reduction called the contact pseudo de Rham complex. This reduction in the context of contact geometry was discovered by Rumin.

Classification of linearly compact simple rigid superalgebras

The notion of an anti-commutative (resp. commutative) rigid superalgebra is a natural generalisation of the notion of a Lie (resp. Jordan) superalgebra. Intuitively rigidity means that small deformations of the product under the structural group produce an isomorphic algebra. In this paper we classify all linearly compact simple anti-commutative (resp. commutative) rigid superalgebras. Beyond Lie (resp. Jordan) superalgebras the complete list includes four series and twenty two exceptional superalgebras (resp. ten exceptional superalgebras).

Poisson vertex algebras in the theory of Hamiltonian equations

We lay down the foundations of the theory of Poisson vertex algebras aimed at its applications to integrability of Hamiltonian partial differential equations. Such an equation is called integrable if it can be included in an infinite hierarchy of compatible Hamiltonian equations, which admit an infinite sequence of linearly independent integrals of motion in involution. The construction of a hierarchy and its integrals of motion is achieved by making use of the so called Lenard scheme. We find simple conditions which guarantee that the scheme produces an infinite sequence of closed 1-forms ω_j, j in Z_+, of the variational complex Ω. If these forms are exact, i.e. ω_j are variational derivatives of some local functionals \int h_j, then the latter are integrals of motion in involution of the hierarchy formed by the corresponding Hamiltonian vector fields. We show that the complex Ωis exact, provided that the algebra of functions V is "normal"; in particular, for arbitrary V, any closed form in Ωbecomes exact if we add to V a finite number of antiderivatives. We demonstrate on the examples of KdV, HD and CNW hierarchies how the Lenard scheme works. We also discover a new integrable hierarchy, which we call the CNW hierarchy of HD type. Developing the ideas of Dorfman, we extend the Lenard scheme to arbitrary Dirac structures, and demonstrate its applicability on the examples of the NLS, pKdV and KN hierarchies.

Solitons in Affine and Permutation Orbifolds

We consider properties of solitons in general orbifolds in the algebraic quantum field theory framework and constructions of solitons in affine and permutation orbifolds. Under general conditions we show that our construction gives all the twisted representations of the fixed point subnet. This allows us to prove a number of conjectures: in the affine orbifold case we clarify the issue of ``fixed point resolutions''; in the permutation orbifold case we determine all irreducible representations of the orbifold, and we also determine the fusion rules in a nontrivial case, which imply an integral property of chiral data for any completely rational conformal net.

Representations of the exceptional Lie superalgebra E(3,6) III: Classification of singular vectors

We continue the study of irreducible representations of the exceptional Lie superalgebra E(3,6). This is one of the two simple infinite-dimensional Lie superalgebras of vector fields which have a Lie algebra sl(3)\times sl(2)\times gl(1) as the zero degree component of its consistent ZZ-grading. We provide the classification of the singular vectors in the degenerate Verma modules over E(3,6), completing thereby the classification and construction of all irreducible E(3,6)- modules that are L_0-locally finite.

Subalgebras of $\gc_N$ and Jacobi polynomials

We classify the subalgebras of the general Lie conformal algebra $\gc_N$ that act irreducibly on $\C[\partial]^N$ and that are normalized by the $\operatorname{sl}_2$--part of a Virasoro element. The problem turns out to be closely related to classical Jacobi polynomials $P_n^{(-σ,σ)}$, $σ\in\C$. The connection goes both ways -- we use in our classification some classical properties of Jacobi polynomials, and we derive from the theory of conformal algebras some apparently new properties of Jacobi polynomials.

Integrable highest weight modules over affine superalgebras and Appell's function

We classify integrable irreducible highest weight representations of non-twisted affine Lie superalgebras. We give a free field construction in the level~1 case. The analysis of this construction shows, in particular, that in the simplest case of the $s\ell (2|1)$ level~1 affine superalgebra the characters are expressed in terms of the Appell elliptic function. Our results demonstrate that the representation theory of affine Lie superalgebras is quite different from that of affine Lie algebras.

Representations of the Exceptional Lie superalgebra $E(3,6): II. Four series of degenerate modules

Four $\ZZ_+$-bigraded complexes with the action of the exceptional infinite-dimensional Lie superalgebra E(3,6) are constructed. We show that all the images and cokernels and all but three kernels of the differentials are irreducible E(3,6)-modules. This is based on the list of singular vectors and the calculation of homology of these complexes. As a result, we obtain an explicit construction of all degenerate irreducible E(3,6)-modules and compute their characters and sizes. Since the group of symmetries of the Standard Model $SU(3) \times SU(2) \times U(1)$ (divided by a central subgroup of order six) is a maximal compact subgroup of the group of automorphisms of E(3,6), our results may have applications to particle physics.

Representations of the Exceptional Lie superalgebra E(3,6): I. Degeneracy conditions

Recently one of the authors obtained a classification of simple infinite-dimensional Lie superalgebras of vector fields which extends the well-known classification of E. Cartan in the Lie algebra case. The list consists of many series defined by simple equations, and of several exceptional superalgebras, among them E(3,6). In the article we study irreducible representations of the exceptional Lie superalgebra E(3,6). This superalgebra has s\ell(3)\times s\ell(2)\times g\ell(1) as the zero degree component of its consistent \ZZ-grading which leads us to believe that its representation theory has potential for physical applications.

Affine orbifolds and rational conformal field theory extensions of W_{1+infinity}

Chiral orbifold models are defined as gauge field theories with a finite gauge group $Γ$. We start with a conformal current algebra A associated with a connected compact Lie group G and a negative definite integral invariant bilinear form on its Lie algebra. Any finite group $Γ$ of inner automorphisms or A (in particular, any finite subgroup of G) gives rise to a gauge theory with a chiral subalgebra $A^Γ\subset A$ of local observables invariant under $Γ$. A set of positive energy $A^Γ$ modules is constructed whose characters span, under some assumptions on $Γ$, a finite dimensional unitary representation of $SL(2,Z)$. We compute their asymptotic dimensions (thus singling out the nontrivial orbifold modules) and find explicit formulae for the modular transformations and hence, for the fusion rules. As an application we construct a family of rational conformal field theory (RCFT) extensions of $W_{1+\infty}$ that appear to provide a bridge between two approaches to the quantum Hall effect.

Quasifinite highest weight modules over the Lie algebra of differential operators on the circle

The unitary ones are classified as well. Similar results are obtained for the sin-algebras.
