New Examples of Irreducible Local Diffusion of Hyperbolic PDE's

Local diffusion of strictly hyperbolic higher-order PDE's with constant coefficients at all simple singularities of corresponding wavefronts can be explained and recognized by only two local geometrical features of these wavefronts. We radically disprove the obvious conjecture extending this fact to arbitrary singularities: namely, we present examples of diffusion at all non-simple singularity classes of generic wavefronts in odd-dimensional spaces, which are not reducible to diffusion at simple singular points.

Local Petrovskii lacunas at parabolic singular points of wavefronts of strictly hyperbolic PDE's

We enumerate the local Petrovskii lacunas (that is, the domains of local regularity of the principal fundamental solutions) of strictly hyperbolic PDE's with constant coefficients in $R^N$ at the parabolic singular points of their wavefronts. These points form the next difficult family of classes of the natural classification of singular points after the so-called simple singularities, studied previously. Also we promote a computer program counting for topologically different morsifications of critical points of smooth functions, and hence also for local components of the complement of a generic wavefront at its singular points.

Homology of spaces of homogeneous polynomials in $R^2$ without multiple zeros

For any natural $d \ge k \ge 2$ we calculate the cohomology groups of the space of homogeneous polynomials $R^2 \to R$ of degree $d$, which do not vanish with multiplicity $\ge k$ on real lines. For $k=2$ this problem provides the simplest example of the situation, when the "finite degree" invariants of nonsingular objects are not a complete system of invariants.

Monodromy of complete intersections and surface potentials

Following Newton, Ivory and Arnold, we study the Newtonian potentials of algebraic hypersurfaces in $R^n$. The ramification of (analytic continuations of) these potential depends on a monodromy group, which can be considered as a proper subgroup of the local monodromy group of a complete intersection (acting on a {\em twisted} vanishing homology group if $n$ is odd). Studying this monodromy group we prove, in particular, that the attraction force of a hyperbolic layer of degree $d$ in $R^n$ coincides with appropriate algebraic vector-functions everywhere outside the attracting surface if $n=2$ or $d=2$, and is non-algebraic in all domains other than the hyperbolicity domain if the surface is generic and $d\ge 3$ and $n\ge 3$ and $n+d \ge 8$. (Later, W. Ebeling has removed the last restriction $d+n \ge 8$).

On combinatorial formulas for cohomology of spaces of knots

We develop homological techniques for finding explicit combinatorial expressions of finite-type cohomology classes of spaces of knots in $R^n, n \ge 3,$ generalizing Polyak--Viro formulas for invariants (i.e. 0-dimensional cohomology classes) of knots in $R^3$. As the first applications we give such formulas for the (reduced mod 2) {\em generalized Teiblum--Turchin cocycle} of order 3 (which is the simplest cohomology class of {\em long knots} $R^1 \hookrightarrow R^n$ not reducible to knot invariants or their natural stabilizations), and for all integral cohomology classes of orders 1 and 2 of spaces of {\em compact knots} $S^1 \hookrightarrow R^n$. As a corollary, we prove the nontriviality of all these cohomology classes in spaces of knots in $R^3.$

On Finite Order Invariants of Triple Points Free Plane Curves

We describe some regular techniques of calculating finite degree invariants of triple points free smooth plane curves $S^1 \to R^2$. They are a direct analog of similar techniques for knot invariants and are based on the calculus of {\em triangular diagrams} and {\em connected hypergraphs} in the same way as the calculation of knot invariants is based on the study of chord diagrams and connected graphs. E.g., the simplest such invariant is of degree 4 and corresponds to the diagram consisting of two triangles with alternating vertices in a circle in the same way as the simplest knot invariant (of degree 2) corresponds to the 2-chord diagram $\bigoplus$. Also, following V.I.Arnold and other authors we consider invariants of {\em immersed} triple points free curves and describe similar techniques also for this problem, and, more generally, for the calculation of homology groups of the space of immersed plane curves without points of multiplicity $\ge k$ for any $k \ge 3.$

Spaces of Hermitian operators with simple spectra and their finite-order cohomology

The topology of spaces of Hermitian operators in $C^n$ with non-simple spectra was studied by V.Arnold in a relation with the theory of adiabatic connections and the quantum Hall effect. The natural filtration of these spaces by the sets of operators with fixed numbers of eigenvalues defines the spectral sequence, providing interesting combinatorial and homological information on this stratification. We construct a different spectral sequence, also counting the homology groups of these spaces and based on the universal techniques of {\em topological order complexes} and resolutions of algebraic varieties, generalizing the combinatorial inclusion-exclusion formula and similar to the construction of finite degree knot invariants. This spectral sequence degenerates at the term $E_1$, is (conjecturally) multiplicative, and as $n$ grows then it converges to a stable spectral sequence counting the cohomology of the space of infinite Hermitian operators without multiple eigenvalues, all whose terms $E^{p,q}_r$ are finitely generated. It allows us to define the finite degree cohomology classes of this space, and to apply the well-known facts and methods of the topological theory of flag manifolds to the problems of geometrical combinatorics, especially concerning the continuous partially ordered sets of subspaces and flags.

Stratified Picard-Lefschetz Theory with Twisted Coefficients

The monodromy action in the homology (generally with twisted coefficients) of complements of stratified complex analytic varieties depending on parameters is studied. For a wide class of local degenerations of such families (stratified Morse singularities) local monodromy and variation operators are reduced to similar operators acting in the transversal slices of corresponding strata. In particular, these results imply a main part of F. Pham's generalized Picard--Lefschetz formulae.

Topology of plane arrangements and their complements

This is a glossary of notions and methods related with the topological theory of collections of affine planes, including braid groups, configuration spaces, order complexes, stratified Morse theory, simplicial resolutions, complexes of graphs, Orlik--Solomon rings, Salvetti complex, matroids, Spanier--Whitehead duality, twisted homology groups, monodromy theory and multidimensional hypergeometric functions. The emphasis on the most geometrical explanation is done; applications and analogies in the differential topology are outlined.

On invariants and homology of spaces of knots in arbitrary manifolds

Finite-order invariants of knots in arbitrary 3-manifolds (including non-orientable ones) are constructed and studied by methods of the topology of discriminant sets. Obstructions to the integrability of admissible weight systems to well-defined knot invariants are identified as 1-dimensional cohomology classes of generalized loop spaces of the manifold. Unlike the case of the 3-sphere, these obstructions can be non-trivial and provide invariants of the manifold itself. The corresponding algebraic machinery allows us to obtain on the level of the ``abstract nonsense'' some of results and problems of the theory, and to extract from other the essential topological part.
