Symplectic quantization of multi-field Generalized Proca electrodynamics

We explicitly carry out the symplectic quantization of a family of multi-field Generalized Proca (GP) electrodynamics theories. In the process, we provide an independent derivation of the so-called secondary constraint enforcing relations -- consistency conditions that significantly restrict the allowed interactions in multi-field settings already at the classical level. Additionally, we unveil the existence of quantum consistency conditions, which apply in both single- and multi-field GP scenarios. Our newly found conditions imply that not all classically well-defined (multi-)GP theories are amenable to quantization. The extension of our results to the most general multi-GP class is conceptually straightforward, albeit algebraically cumbersome.

The complete theory of Maxwell and Proca fields

We present the most general ghost-free classical Lagrangian containing first-order derivatives and describing interacting real Abelian spin-one fields on Minkowski spacetime. We study both massive Proca and massless Maxwell fields and allow for a non-linear realization of mass, in the form of derivative self-interactions. Within this context, our construction notoriously extends the existing literature, which is limited to the case of a single Proca field and to multiple interacting Proca fields in the presence of a global rotational symmetry. In the limit of a single Proca field, we reproduce the known healthy interaction terms. We provide the necessary and sufficient conditions to ensure ghost-freedom in any multi-field setup. We observe that, in general, the said conditions are not satisfied by the rotationally symmetric multi-Proca interactions suggested so far, which implies that they propagate ghosts. Our theory admits a plethora of applications in a wide range of subjects. For illustrative purposes, we provide concrete proposals in holographic condensed matter and black hole physics.

The Maxwell-Proca theory: definition and construction

We present a systematic construction of the most general first order Lagrangian describing an arbitrary number of interacting Maxwell and Proca fields on Minkowski spacetime. To this aim, we first formalize the notion of a Proca field, in analogy to the well known Maxwell field. Our definition allows for a non-linear realization of the Proca mass, in the form of derivative self-interactions. Consequently, we consider so-called generalized Proca/vector Galileons. We explicitly demonstrate the ghost-freedom of this complete Maxwell-Proca theory by obtaining its constraint algebra. We find that, when multiple Proca fields are present, their interactions must fulfill non-trivial differential relations in order to ensure the propagation of the correct number of degrees of freedom. These relations had so far been overlooked, which means previous multi-Proca proposals generically contain ghosts. This is a companion paper to arXiv:1905.06968 [hep-th]. It puts on a solid footing the theory there introduced.

BRST Symmetry: Boundary Conditions and Edge States in QED

In manifolds with spatial boundary, BRST formalism can be used to quantize gauge theories. We show that, in a $U(1)$ gauge theory, only a subset of all the boundary conditions allowed by the self-adjointness of the Hamiltonian preserves BRST symmetry. Hence, the theory can be quantized using BRST formalism only when that subset of boundary conditions is considered. We also show that for such boundary conditions, there exist fermionic states which are localized near the boundary.

Improvements to the Froissart bound from AdS/CFT

In this paper we consider the issue of the Froissart bound on the high energy behaviour of total cross sections. This bound, originally derived using principles of analyticity of scattering amplitudes, is seen to be satisfied by all the available experimental data on total hadronic cross sections. At strong coupling, gauge/gravity duality has been used to provide some insights into this behaviour. In this work, we find the subleading terms to the so-derived Froissart bound from AdS/CFT. We find that a $(\ln \frac{s}{s_0})$ term is obtained, with a negative coefficient. We see that the fits to the currently available data confirm improvement in the fits due to the inclusion of such a term, with the appropriate sign.

Monopoles, Dirac operator and index theory for fuzzy ${SU(3)}/({U(1)\times U(1)})$

The intersection of the 10-dimensional fuzzy conifold $Y_F^{10}$ with $S^5_F \times S^5_F$ is the compact 8-dimensional fuzzy space $X_F^8$. We show that $X_F^8$ is (the analogue of) a principal $U(1)\times U(1)$ bundle over fuzzy ${SU(3)}/({U(1) \times U(1)}) \left(\equiv\mathcal{M}^6_F\right)$. We construct $\mathcal{M}_F^6$ using the Gell-Mann matrices by adapting Schwinger's construction. The space $\mathcal{M}_F^6$ is of relevance in higher dimensional quantum Hall effect and matrix models of $D$-branes. Further we show that the sections of the monopole bundle can be expressed in the basis of $SU(3)$ eigenvectors. We construct the Dirac operator on $\mathcal{M}_F^6$ from the Ginsparg-Wilson algebra on this space. Finally, we show that the index of the Dirac operator correctly reproduces the known results in the continuum.
