Down-up algebras and chromatic symmetric functions

We establish Guay-Paquet's unpublished linear relation between certain chromatic symmetric functions by relating his algebra on paths to the $q$-Klyachko algebra. The coefficients in this relations are $q$-hit polynomials, and they come up naturally in our setup as connected remixed Eulerian numbers, in contrast to the computational approach of Colmenarejo-Morales-Panova. As Guay-Paquet's algebra is a down-up algebra, we are able to harness algebraic results in the context of the latter and establish results of a combinatorial flavour. In particular we resolve a conjecture of Colmenarejo-Morales-Panova on chromatic symmetric functions. This concerns the abelian case of the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture, which we briefly survey.

Zonotopal algebras, orbit harmonics, and Donaldson-Thomas invariants of symmetric quivers

We apply the method of orbit harmonics to the set of break divisors and orientable divisors on graphs to obtain the central and external zonotopal algebras respectively. We then relate a construction of Efimov in the context of cohomological Hall algebras to the central zonotopal algebra of a graph $G_{Q,γ}$ constructed from a symmetric quiver $Q$ with enough loops and a dimension vector $γ$. This provides a concrete combinatorial perspective on the former work, allowing us to identify the quantum Donaldson-Thomas invariants as the Hilbert series of the space of $S_γ$-invariants of the Postnikov-Shapiro slim subgraph space attached to $G_{Q,γ}$. The connection with orbit harmonics in turn allows us to give a manifestly nonnegative combinatorial interpretation to numerical Donaldson-Thomas invariants as the number of $S_γ$-orbits under the permutation action on the set of break divisors on $G_{Q,γ}$. We conclude with several representation-theoretic consequences, whose combinatorial ramifications may be of independent interest.

Alternating sign matrices and totally symmetric plane partitions

We study the Schur polynomial expansion of a family of symmetric polynomials related to the refined enumeration of alternating sign matrices with respect to their inversion number, complementary inversion number and the position of the unique $1$ in the top row. We prove that the expansion can be expressed as a sum over totally symmetric plane partitions and we are also able to determine the coefficients. This establishes a new connection between alternating sign matrices and a class of plane partitions, thereby complementing the fact that alternating sign matrices are equinumerous with totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions as well as with descending plane partitions. As a by-product we obtain an interesting map from totally symmetric plane partitions to Dyck paths. The proof is based on a new, quite general antisymmetrizer-to-determinant formula.

Divided symmetrization and quasisymmetric functions

Motivated by a question in Schubert calculus, we study the interplay of quasisymmetric polynomials with the divided symmetrization operator, which was introduced by Postnikov in the context of volume polynomials of permutahedra. Divided symmetrization is a linear form which acts on the space of polynomials in $n$ indeterminates of degree $n-1$. We first show that divided symmetrization applied to a quasisymmetric polynomial in $m$ indeterminates can be easily determined. Several examples with a strong combinatorial flavor are given. Then, we prove that the divided symmetrization of any polynomial can be naturally computed with respect to a direct sum decomposition due to Aval-Bergeron-Bergeron involving the ideal generated by positive degree quasisymmetric polynomials in $n$ indeterminates.

Some natural extensions of the parking space

We construct a family of $S_n$ modules indexed by $c\in\{1,\dots,n\}$ with the property that upon restriction to $S_{n-1}$ they recover the classical parking function representation of Haiman. The construction of these modules relies on an $S_n$-action on a set that is closely related to the set of parking functions. We compute the characters of these modules and use the resulting description to classify them up to isomorphism. In particular, we show that the number of isomorphism classes is equal to the number of divisors $d$ of $n$ satisfying $ d\neq 2 \: (\!\!\!\!\mod 4)$. In the cases $c=n$ and $c=1$, we compute the number of orbits. Based on empirical evidence, we conjecture that when $c=1$, our representation is $h$-positive and is in fact the (ungraded) extension of the parking function representation constructed by Berget and Rhoades.

Trimming the permutahedron to extend the parking space

Berget and Rhoades asked whether the permutation representation obtained by the action of $S_{n-1}$ on parking functions of length $n-1$ can be extended to a permutation action of $S_{n}$. We answer this question in the affirmative. We realize our module in two different ways. The first description involves binary Lyndon words and the second involves the action of the symmetric group on the lattice points of the trimmed standard permutahedron.

Gessel polynomials, rooks, and extended Linial arrangements

We study a family of polynomials associated with ascent-descent statistics on labeled rooted plane k-ary trees introduced by Gessel, from a rook-theoretic perspective. We generalize the excedance statistic on permutations to maximal nonattacking rook placements on certain rectangular boards by decomposing them into boards of staircase shape. We then relate the number of maximal nonattacking rook placements on certain skew boards to the number of regions in extended Linial arrangements by establishing a relation between the factorial polynomial of those boards to the characteristic polynomial of extended Linial arrangements. Furthermore, we give a combinatorial interpretation of the number of bounded regions in extended Linial arrangements in the setting of labeled rooted plane k-ary trees. Finally, using the work of Goldman-Joichi-White, we identify graphs whose chromatic polynomials equal the characteristic polynomials of extended Linial arrangements upto a straightforward normalization.
