New opportunities at the photon energy frontier

Ultra-peripheral collisions (UPCs) involving heavy ions and protons are the energy frontier for photon-mediated interactions. UPC photons can be used for many purposes, including probing low-$x$ gluons via photoproduction of dijets and vector mesons, probes of beyond-standard-model processes, such as those enabled by light-by-light scattering, and studies of two-photon production of the Higgs.

Exclusive production of the MSSM Higgs bosons at the LHC

We review the prospects for Central Exclusive Production (CEP) of BSM Higgs bosons at the LHC using forward proton detectors proposed to be installed at 220 m and 420 m from the ATLAS and/ or CMS. Results are presented for MSSM in standard benchmark scenarios and in scenarios compatible with the Cold Dark Matter relic abundance and other precision measurements. Following results of the LHC Higgs boson searches, we investigate a hypothesis that candidates found at a mass of 125 GeV are compatible with light CP-even MSSM Higgs bosons. We show that CEP can give a valuable information about spin-parity properties of the Higgs bosons.

Limiting soft particle emission in e+e-, hadronic and nuclear collisions

In e+e- collisions the particle spectra at low momenta reflect the properties of the underlying "soft" QCD gluon bremsstrahlung: the particle density, in the limit p\to 0, becomes independent of the incoming energy \sqrt{s} and directly proportional to the colour factors C_A,C_F for primary gluons or quarks respectively. We find that experimental data from the pp and nuclear reactions reveal the same behaviour: in the limit p_T\to 0 the invariant particle spectra become independent of the collision energy, and their intensities in e+e-, pp and nuclear reactions are compatible with the expected colour factors C_F: C_A: (N_{part}/2) C_A for N_{part} nucleons, participating in the interaction. Coherent soft gluon bremsstrahlung is, therefore, suggested to be the dominant QCD mechanism for the soft particle production in all these reactions. These "soft" particles probe the very early stage of hadron formation in the collision. Future measurements at the LHC will provide crucial tests on the contributions from possible incoherent multi-component processes.

Universal properties of particle production in the soft limit p_T -> 0

The momentum spectra of particles in different high energy processes, such as e^+e^- annihilation, pp and nuclear collisions in the limit p,p_T -> 0 exhibit similar properties because of the dominant role of coherent soft gluon bremsstrahlung. We observe the following general features: the inclusive particle density approaches a limiting behaviour and becomes independent of primary collision energy; furthermore, it becomes proportional to the QCD colour factors C_A,C_F which appear in the Born term for the respective minimal partonic processes. In this limit, nuclear collisions reach with good accuracy participant (``wounded nucleon'') scaling. Particle ratios in the low momentum region display a universal behaviour. Future measurements at the LHC will provide crucial tests for the contributions from additional incoherent multi-component processes.

Angular Distribution of Particle Flows and Perturbative QCD Predictions

We discuss the predictions of perturbative QCD for angular flows of final state particles in two and three jet events including their cms energy and jet resolution (y_{cut}) dependence. The simple analytical formulae for gluon bremsstrahlung from primary partons, modified for gluon cascading, reproduce the main features of the experimental data well. For y_{cut}-selected events, the particle flow is derived from a superposition of colour dipoles in much the same way that photon radiation is derived from electric dipoles.

Analytical QCD and multiparticle production

We review the perturbative approach to multiparticle production in hard collision processes. It is investigated to what extent parton level analytical calculations at low momentum cut-off can reproduce experimental data on the hadronic final state. Systematic results are available for various observables with the next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy (the so-called modified leading logarithmic approximation - MLLA). We introduce the analytical formalism and then discuss recent applications concerning multiplicities, inclusive spectra, correlations and angular flows in multi-jet events. In various cases the perturbative picture is surprisingly successful, even for very soft particle production.

Perturbative Universality in Soft Particle Production

The spectrum of partons in a QCD jet becomes independent of the primary energy in the low momentum limit. This follows within the perturbative QCD from the colour coherence in soft gluon branching. Remarkably, the hadrons follow such behaviour closely, suggesting the parton hadron duality picture to be appropriate also for the low momentum particles. More generally, this scaling property holds for particles of low transverse and arbitrary longitudinal momentum, which explains an old experimental observation (``fan invariance''). Further tests of the perturbatively based picture for soft particle production are proposed for three-jet events in e+e- annihilation and di-jet production events in gamma p, gamma-gamma and p\bar p collisions. They are based upon the difference in the intensity of the soft radiation from primary q\bar q and gg antennae.

Chromo- and Electrodynamics of Heavy Unstable Particle

In this talk I attempt to survey some selected physics issues on radiative interference phenomena in the production of heavy unstable particles. A special emphasis is placed on the reactions $e^+e^- \rightarrow W^+W^- \rightarrow 4$ jets and $e^+e^- \rightarrow t\bar{t} \rightarrow bW^+\bar{b}W^-$. A transparent recipe is given for quantifying the level of suppression of the interference effects in the inclusive production processes. The influence of the $W$ width on the Coulomb corrections to the threshold $W^+W^-$ production is briefly addressed.
