Interplay of flux guiding and Hall effect in Nb films with nanogrooves

The interplay between vortex guiding and the Hall effect in superconducting Nb films with periodically arranged nanogrooves is studied via four-probe measurements in standard and Hall configurations and accompanying theoretical modeling. The nanogrooves are milled by focused ion beam and induce a symmetric pinning potential of the washboard type. The resistivity tensor of the films is determined in the limit of small current densities at temperatures close to the critical temperature for the fundamental matching configuration of the vortex lattice with respect to the pinning nanolandscape. The angle between the current direction with respect to the grooves is set at seven fixed values between $0^\circ$ and $90^\circ$. A sign change is observed in the temperature dependence of the Hall resistivity $ρ_\perp^-$ of as-grown films in a narrow temperature range near $T_c$. By contrast, for all nanopatterned films $ρ_\perp^-$ is nonzero in a broader temperature range below $T_c$, allowing us to discriminate between two contributions in $ρ_\perp^-$, namely one contribution originating from the guided vortex motion and the other one caused by the Hall anomaly just as in as-grown Nb films. All four measured resistivity components are successfully fitted to analytical expressions derived within the framework of a stochastic model of competing isotropic and anisotropic pinning. This provides evidence of the model validity for the description of the resistive response of superconductor thin films with washboard pinning nanolandscapes.

AC-driven Vortices and the Hall Effect in a Superconductor with a Tilted Washboard Pinning Potential

The Langevin equation for a two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear guided vortex motion in a tilted cosine pinning potential in the presence of an ac is exactly solved in terms of a matrix continued fraction at arbitrary value of the Hall effect. The influence of an ac of arbitrary amplitude and frequency on the dc and ac magnetoresistivity tensors is analyzed. The ac density and frequency dependence of the overall shape and the number and position of the Shapiro-like steps on the anisotropic current-voltage characteristics are considered. The influence of a subcritical or overcritical dc on the time-dependent stationary ac longitudinal and transverse resistive vortex responses (on the frequency of an ac drive W) in terms of the nonlinear impedance tensor Z and the nonlinear ac response at W-harmonics are studied. Analytical formulas for 2D temperature-dependent linear impedance tensor Zl in the presence of a dc which depend on the angle a between the current-density vector and the guiding direction of the washboard planar pinning potential are derived and analyzed. Influence of a-anisotropy and the Hall effect on the nonlinear power absorption by vortices is discussed.

Guiding of vortices and ratchet effect in superconducting films with asymmetric pinning potential

Two-dimensional vortex dynamics in a ratchet washboard planar pinning potential (PPP) in the presence of thermal fluctuations is considered on the basis of a Fokker-Planck equation. Explicit expressions for two new nonlinear anisotropic voltages (longitudinal and transverse with respect to the current direction) are derived and analyzed. The physical origin of these odd (with respect to magnetic field or transport current direction reversal) voltages is caused by the interplay between the even effect of vortex guiding and the ratchet asymmetry. Both new voltages are going to zero in the linear regimes of the vortex motion (i.e. in the thermally activated flux flow (TAFF) and ohmic flux flow (FF) regimes) and have a bump-like current or temperature dependence in the vicinity of the highly nonlinear resistive transition from the TAFF to the FF.
