Are Two Binary Operators Necessary to Obtain a Finite Axiomatisation of Parallel Composition?

Bergstra and Klop have shown that bisimilarity has a finite equational axiomatisation over ACP/CCS extended with the binary left and communication merge operators. Moller proved that auxiliary operators are necessary to obtain a finite axiomatisation of bisimilarity over CCS, and Aceto et al. showed that this remains true when Hennessy's merge is added to that language. These results raise the question of whether there is one auxiliary binary operator whose addition to CCS leads to a finite axiomatisation of bisimilarity. We contribute to answering this question in the simplified setting of the recursion-, relabelling-, and restriction-free fragment of CCS. We formulate three natural assumptions pertaining to the operational semantics of auxiliary operators and their relationship to parallel composition, and prove that an auxiliary binary operator facilitating a finite axiomatisation of bisimilarity in the simplified setting cannot satisfy all three assumptions.

EvTL: A Temporal Logic for the Transient Analysis of Cyber-Physical Systems

The behaviour of systems characterised by a closed interaction of software components with the environment is inevitably subject to perturbations and uncertainties. In this paper we propose a general framework for the specification and verification of requirements on the behaviour of these systems. We introduce the Evolution Temporal Logic (EvTL), a stochastic extension of STL allowing us to specify properties of the probability distributions describing the transient behaviour of systems, and to include the presence of uncertainties in the specification. We equip EvTL with a robustness semantics and we prove it sound and complete with respect to the semantics induced by the evolution metric, i.e., a hemimetric expressing how well a system is fulfilling its tasks with respect to another one. Finally, we develop a statistical model checking algorithm for EvTL specifications. As an example of an application of our framework, we consider a three-tanks laboratory experiment.

On the Axiomatisation of Branching Bisimulation Congruence over CCS

In this paper we investigate the equational theory of (the restriction, relabelling, and recursion free fragment of) CCS modulo rooted branching bisimilarity, which is a classic, bisimulation-based notion of equivalence that abstracts from internal computational steps in process behaviour. Firstly, we show that CCS is not finitely based modulo the considered congruence. As a key step of independent interest in the proof of that negative result, we prove that each CCS process has a unique parallel decomposition into indecomposable processes modulo branching bisimilarity. As a second main contribution, we show that, when the set of actions is finite, rooted branching bisimilarity has a finite equational basis over CCS enriched with the left merge and communication merge operators from ACP.

Proceedings Combined 29th International Workshop on Expressiveness in Concurrency and 19th Workshop on Structural Operational Semantics

This volume contains the proceedings of EXPRESS/SOS 2022: the Combined 29th International Workshop on Expressiveness in Concurrency and the 19th Workshop on Structural Operational Semantics, which was held in Warsaw, Poland, as an affiliated workshop of CONCUR 2022, the 33rd International Conference on Concurrency Theory. The EXPRESS/SOS workshop series aims at bringing together researchers interested in the formal semantics of systems and programming concepts, and in the expressiveness of computational models.

A Semantic Theory of the Internet of Things

We propose a process calculus for modelling systems in the Internet of Things paradigm. Our systems interact both with the physical environment, via sensors and actuators, and with smart devices, via short-range and Internet channels. The calculus is equipped with a standard notion of bisimilarity which is a fully abstract characterisation of a well-known contextual equivalence. We use our semantic proof-methods to prove run-time properties as well as system equalities of non-trivial IoT systems.

Logical Characterization of Bisimulation Metrics

Bisimulation metrics provide a robust and accurate approach to study the behavior of nondeterministic probabilistic processes. In this paper, we propose a logical characterization of bisimulation metrics based on a simple probabilistic variant of the Hennessy-Milner logic. Our approach is based on the novel notions of mimicking formulae and distance between formulae. The former are a weak version of the well known characteristic formulae and allow us to characterize also (ready) probabilistic simulation and probabilistic bisimilarity. The latter is a 1-bounded pseudometric on formulae that mirrors the Hausdorff and Kantorovich lifting the defining bisimilarity pseudometric. We show that the distance between two processes equals the distance between their own mimicking formulae.
