Measurement operator for quantum nondemolition measurements

We derive a measurement operator corresponding to a quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of an atomic ensemble. The quantum measurement operator takes the form of a positive operator valued measure (POVM) and is valid for arbitrary interaction times, initial coherent state amplitudes, and final photon measurement outcomes. We analyze the dependence on various parameters and show that the effect of the QND measurement for short interaction times is to apply a Gaussian modulation of the initial state wavefunction. We derive approximate expressions for the POVM in various limits, such as the short interaction time regime and projective measurement limit. Several examples are shown which shows how spin squeezing and Schrodinger cat states can be generated using the measurement.

Decoherence effects in quantum nondemolition measurement induced entanglement between Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the robustness of quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement-induced entanglement between Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs). We consider an experimental scheme where two BECs are placed in the paths of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, and a QND interaction creates entanglement between coherent light and the atoms. We analyze the two dominant channels of decoherence, atomic dephasing and photon loss on the entangled states produced by this scheme. We calculate the effect of dephasing on the variance and expectation values of the spin operators, entanglement, and correlation criteria. Our analysis does not use the Holstein-Primakoff approximation and is capable of modeling long light-atom interaction times, producing non-Gaussian states beyond the two-mode squeezed states. In the presence of dephasing, the entangled states are robust in the macroscopic limit as long as the dimensionless interaction time is less than $ 1/\sqrt{N}$, where $ N $ is the number of atoms in the BEC. For photon loss, the entangled states generated by long interaction times show remarkable robustness that makes the scheme promising for various quantum information applications.

Stroboscopic quantum nondemolition measurements for enhanced entanglement generation between atomic ensembles

We develop a measurement operator formalism to handle quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement induced entanglement generation between two atomic gases. We first derive how the QND entangling scheme reduces to a positive operator-valued measure, and consider its limiting case when it can be used to construct a projection operator that collapses the state to a total spin projection state. We then analyze how a stroboscopic sequence of such projections made in the x and z basis evolves the initial wave function. Such a sequence of QND projections can enhance the entanglement between the atomic ensembles and makes the state converge towards a highly entangled state. We show several mathematical identities which greatly simplify the state evolution in the projection sequence and allow one to derive the exact state in a highly efficient manner. Our formalism does not use the Holstein-Primakoff approximation as is conventionally done, and treats the spins of the atomic gases in an exact way.

Cooper pair polaritons in cold fermionic atoms within a cavity

We formulate a Bardeen-Cooper-Schriffer (BCS) theory of quasiparticles in a degenerate Fermi gas strongly coupled to photons in a optical cavity. The elementary photonic excitations of the system are cavity polaritons, which consist of a cavity photon and an excitation of an atom within the Fermi sea. The excitation of the atom out of the Fermi sea leaves behind a hole, which together results in a loosely bound Cooper pair, allowing for the system to be written by a BCS wavefunction. As the density of the excitations is increased, the excited atom and hole become more strongly bound, crossing over into the molecular regime. This thus realizes an alternative BCS to BEC crossover scenario, where the participating species are quasiparticle excitations in a Fermi sea consisting of excited atoms and holes.

Ensemble master equation for a trapped-atom clock with one- and two-body losses

An ensemble density matrix model that includes one- and two-body losses is derived for a trapped-atom clock. A trapped-atom clock is mainly affected by one- and two-body losses, generally giving nonexponential decays of populations; nevertheless, three-body recombination is also quantitatively analyzed to demonstrate the boundaries of its practical relevance. The importance of one-body losses is highlighted without which population trapping behavior would be observed. The model is written with decay constants expressed through experimental parameters. It can complement, e.g., the ISRE (identical spin rotation effect) model to improve its predictions: ISRE dramatically increases the ensemble coherence time, hence it enables one to observe the influence of two-body losses on the interferometry contrast envelope. The presented model is useful for Ramsey interferometry and is ready for immediate experimental verification in existing systems.

Long-lived periodic revivals of coherence in an interacting Bose-Einstein condensate

We observe the coherence of an interacting two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) surviving for seconds in a trapped Ramsey interferometer. Mean-field driven collective oscillations of two components lead to periodic dephasing and rephasing of condensate wave functions with a slow decay of the interference fringe visibility. We apply spin echo synchronous with the self-rephasing of the condensate to reduce the influence of state-dependent atom losses, significantly enhancing the visibility up to 0.75 at the evolution time of 1.5s. Mean-field theory consistently predicts higher visibility than experimentally observed values. We quantify the effects of classical and quantum noise and infer a coherence time of 2.8 s for a trapped condensate of 5.5e4 interacting atoms.
