Simultaneous equidistribution of toric periods and fractional moments of L-functions

The embedding of a torus into an inner form of PGL(2) defines an adelic toric period. A general version of Duke's theorem states that this period equidistributes as the discriminant of the splitting field tends to infinity. In this paper we consider a torus embedded diagonally into two distinct inner forms of PGL(2). Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (and some additional technical assumptions), we show simultaneous equidistribution as the discriminant tends to infinity, with an effective logarithmic rate. Our proof is based on a probabilistic approach to estimating fractional moments of L-functions twisted by extended class group characters.

Motohashi's fourth moment identity for non-archimedean test functions and applications

Motohashi established an explicit identity between the fourth moment of the Riemann zeta function weighted by some test function and a spectral cubic moment of automorphic L-functions. By an entirely different method, we prove a generalization of this formula to a fourth moment of Dirichlet L-functions modulo q weighted by a non-archimedean test function. This establishes a new reciprocity formula. As an application, we obtain sharp upper bounds for the fourth moment twisted by the square of a Dirichlet polynomial of length q^{1/4}. An auxiliary result of independent interest is a sharp upper bound for a certain sixth moment for automorphic L-functions, which we also use to improve the best known subconvexity bounds for automorphic L-functions in the level aspect.

On moments of twisted $L$-functions

We study the average of the product of the central values of two $L$-functions of modular forms $f$ and $g$ twisted by Dirichlet characters to a large prime modulus $q$. As our principal tools, we use spectral theory to develop bounds on averages of shifted convolution sums with differences ranging over multiples of $q$, and we use the theory of Deligne and Katz to estimate certain complete exponential sums in several variables and prove new bounds on bilinear forms in Kloosterman sums with power savings when both variables are near the square root of $q$. When at least one of the forms $f$ and $g$ is non-cuspidal, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the mixed second moment of twisted $L$-functions with a power saving error term. In particular, when both are non-cuspidal, this gives a significant improvement on M.~Young's asymptotic evaluation of the fourth moment of Dirichlet $L$-functions. In the general case, the asymptotic formula with a power saving is proved under a conjectural estimate for certain bilinear forms in Kloosterman sums.

Small gaps in the spectrum of the rectangular billiard

We study the size of the minimal gap between the first N eigenvalues of the Laplacian on a rectangular billiard having irrational squared aspect ratio $α$, in comparison to the corresponding quantity for a Poissonian sequence. If $α$ is a quadratic irrationality of certain type, such as the square root of a rational number, we show that the minimal gap is roughly of size 1/N, which is essentially consistent with Poisson statistics. We also give related results for a set of $α$'s of full measure. However, on a fine scale we show that Poisson statistics is violated for all $α$. The proofs use a variety of ideas of an arithmetical nature, involving Diophantine approximation, the theory of continued fractions, and results in analytic number theory.

Some applications of smooth bilinear forms with Kloosterman sums

We revisit a recent bound of I. Shparlinski and T. P. Zhang on bilinear forms with Kloosterman sums, and prove an extension for correlation sums of Kloosterman sums against Fourier coefficients of modular forms. We use these bounds to improve on earlier results on sums of Kloosterman sums along the primes and on the error term of the fourth moment of Dirichlet $L$-functions.

The sup-norm problem for the Siegel modular space of rank two

Let F be a square integrable Maass form on the Siegel upper half space of rank 2 for the Siegel modular group Sp(4, Z) with Laplace eigenvalue lambda. If, in addition, F is a joint eigenfunction of the Hecke algebra, we show a power-saving sup-norm bound in terms of lambda (relative to the generic bound) for F restricted to a compact set. As an auxiliary result of independent interest we prove new uniform bounds for spherical functions on semisimple Lie groups.

Bounds for eigenforms on arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds

On a family of arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds of squarefree level, we prove an upper bound for the sup-norm of Hecke-Maass cusp forms, with a power saving over the local geometric bound simultaneously in the Laplacian eigenvalue and the volume. By a novel combination of diophantine and geometric arguments in a noncommutative setting, we obtain bounds as strong as the best corresponding results on arithmetic surfaces.

Counting in hyperbolic spikes: the diophantine analysis of multihomogeneous diagonal equations

A method is described to sum multi-dimensional arithmetic functions subject to hyperbolic summation conditions, provided that asymptotic formulae in rectangular boxes are available. In combination with the circle method, the new method is a versatile tool to count rational points on algebraic varieties defined by multi-homogeneous diagonal equations.

The second moment of twisted modular L-functions

We prove an asymptotic formula with a power saving error term for the (pure or mixed) second moment of central values of L-functions of any two (possibly equal) fixed cusp forms f, g twisted by all primitive characters modulo q, valid for all sufficiently factorable q including 99.9% of all admissible moduli. The two key ingredients are a careful spectral analysis of a potentially highly unbalanced shifted convolution problem in Hecke eigenvalues and power-saving bounds for sums of products of Kloosterman sums where the length of the sum is below the square-root threshold of the modulus. Applications are given to simultaneous non-vanishing and lower bounds on higher moments of twisted L-functions.

A hybrid asymptotic formula for the second moment of Rankin-Selberg L-functions

We consider the Rankin-Selberg L-functions associated with a fixed modular form of full level and holomorphic cuspidal newforms of large even weight, fixed level and fixed primitive nebentypus. We compute the second moment of this family in fairly general ranges, and obtain an asymptotic formula with a power saving error term. A special case treats the fourth moment of L-functions associated with holomorphic cusp forms.

L-functions with n-th order twists

Let K be a number field containing the n-th roots of unity for some n > 2. We prove a uniform subconvexity result for a family of double Dirichlet series built out of central values of Hecke L-functions of n-th order characters of K. The main new ingredient, possibly of independent interest, is a large sieve for n-th order characters. As further applications of this tool, we derive several results concerning L(s,χ) for n-th order Hecke characters: an estimate of the second moment on the critical line, a non-vanishing result at the central point, and a zero-density theorem.

Non-vanishing of L-functions, the Ramanujan conjecture, and families of Hecke characters

We prove a non-vanishing result for families of $\GL_n\times\GL_n$ Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions in the critical strip, as one factor runs over twists by Hecke characters. As an application, we simplify the proof, due to Luo, Rudnick, and Sarnak, of the best known bounds towards the Generalized Ramanujan Conjecture at the infinite places for cusp forms on $\GL_n$. A key ingredient is the regularization of the units in residue classes by the use of an Arakelov ray class group.

Bounding sup-norms of cusp forms of large level

Let f be an $L^2$-normalized weight zero Hecke-Maass cusp form of square-free level N, character $χ$ and Laplacian eigenvalue $λ\geq 1/4$. It is shown that $\| f \|_{\infty} \ll_λ N^{-1/37}$, from which the hybrid bound $\|f \|_{\infty} \ll λ^{1/4} (Nλ)^{-δ}$ (for some $δ> 0$) is derived. The first bound holds also for $f = y^{k/2}F$ where F is a holomorphic cusp form of weight k with the implied constant now depending on k.

Subconvexity for a double Dirichlet series

For Dirichlet series roughly of the type $Z(s, w) = sum_d L(s, chi_d) d^{-w}$ the subconvexity bound $Z(s, w) \ll (sw(s+w))^{1/6+\varepsilon}$ is proved on the critical lines $\Re s = \Re w = 1/2$. The convexity bound would replace 1/6 with 1/4. In addition, a mean square bound is proved that is consistent with the Lindelöf hypothesis. An interesting specialization is $s=1/2$ in which case the above result give a subconvex bound for a Dirichlet series without an Euler product.
