Deformations of Kink Tails

We study the asymptotic properties of kinks in connection with the deformation procedure. We show that, upon deformation of the field-theoretic model, the asymptotics of kinks can change or remain unchanged, depending on the properties of the deforming function. The cases of both explicit and implicit kinks are considered. In addition, we show that the the deformation procedure can be applied to the important case of implicit kinks. We also prove that for any kink with a power-law tail, the stability potential decreases as the inverse square of the coordinate. The physical consequences of the deformation are discussed: the change of the kink mass, as well as the asymptotic behavior of the kink-antikink force.

Remarks on sine-Gordon kink--fermion system: localized modes and scattering

We study numerically the kink-fermion interactions in a 1+1 dimensional toy model, which describes sine-Gordon kinks coupled to the massless Dirac fermions with backreaction. We show that the spectrum of fermionic modes strongly depends on the choice of the coupling, in particular, there are no localized modes for a minimal Yukawa coupling. We analyze the scattering of the fermionic packet by the kink. We demonstrate that the outcome of the collision dynamically depends on the phase of the incoming fermion packet, it results in alternating regimes of positive and negative acceleration of the kink.

Effect of discrete breathers on the specific heat of a nonlinear chain

A nonlinear chain with six-order polynomial on-site potential is used to analyze the evolution of the total to kinetic energy ratio during development of modulational instability of extended nonlinear vibrational modes. For the on-site potential of hard-type (soft-type) anharmonicity, the instability of $q=π$ mode ($q=0$ mode) results in the appearance of long-living discrete breathers (DBs) that gradually radiate their energy and eventually the system approaches thermal equilibrium with spatially uniform and temporally constant temperature. In the hard-type (soft-type) anharmonicity case, the total to kinetic energy ratio is minimal (maximal) in the regime of maximal energy localization by DBs. It is concluded that DBs affect specific heat of the nonlinear chain and for the case of hard-type (soft-type) anharmonicity they reduce (increase) the specific heat.

Equilibration of sinusoidal modulation of temperature in linear and nonlinear chains

The equilibration of sinusoidally modulated distribution of the kinetic temperature is analyzed in the $β$-Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou chain with different degrees of nonlinearity and for different wavelengths of temperature modulation. Two different types of initial conditions are used to show that either one gives the same result as the number of realizations increases and that the initial conditions that are closer to the state of thermal equilibrium give faster convergence. The kinetics of temperature equilibration is monitored and compared to the analytical solution available for the linear chain in the continuum limit. The transition from ballistic to diffusive thermal conductivity with an increase in the degree of anharmonicity is shown. In the ballistic case, the energy equilibration has an oscillatory character with an amplitude decreasing in time, and in the diffusive case, it is monotonous in time. For smaller wavelength of temperature modulation, the oscillatory character of temperature equilibration remains for a larger degree of anharmonicity. For a given wavelength of temperature modulation, there is such a value of the anharmonicity parameter at which the temperature equilibration occurs most rapidly.

Collision of $ϕ^4$ kinks free of the Peierls-Nabarro barrier in the regime of strong discreteness

The two major effects observed in collisions of the continuum $ϕ^4$ kinks are (i) the existence of critical collision velocity above which the kinks always emerge from the collision and (ii) the existence of the escape windows for multi-bounce collisions with the velocity below the critical one, associated with the energy exchange between the kink's internal and translational modes. The potential merger (for sufficiently low collision speeds) of the kink and antikink produces a bion with oscillation frequency $ω_B$, which constantly radiates energy, since its higher harmonics are always within the phonon spectrum. Similar effects have been observed in the discrete $ϕ^4$ kink-antikink collisions for relatively weak discreteness. Here we analyze kinks colliding with their mirror image antikinks in the regime of strong discreteness considering an exceptional discretization of the $ϕ^4$ field equation where the static Peierls-Nabarro potential is precisely zero and the not-too-fast kinks can propagate practically radiating no energy. Several new effects are observed in this case, originating from the fact that the phonon band width is small for strongly discrete lattices and for even higher discreteness an inversion of the phonon spectrum takes place with the short waves becoming low-frequency waves. When the phonon band is narrow, not a bion but a discrete breather with frequency $ω_{DB}$ and all higher harmonics outside the phonon band is formed. When the phonon spectrum is inverted, the kink and antikink become mutually repulsive solitary waves with oscillatory tails, and their collision is possible only for velocities above a threshold value sufficient to overcome their repulsion.

Domain wall thickness and deformations of the field model

We consider the change in the asymptotic behavior of solutions of the type of flat domain walls (i.e., kink solutions) in field-theoretic models with a real scalar field. We show that when the model is deformed by a bounded deforming function, the exponential asymptotics of the corresponding kink solutions remain exponential, while the power-law ones remain power-law. However, the parameters of these asymptotics, which are related to the wall thickness, can change.

Effect of discrete breathers on macroscopic properties of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chain

The effect of discrete breathers (DBs) on macroscopic properties of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chain with symmetric and asymmetric potentials is investigated. The total to kinetic energy ratio (related to specific heat), stress (related to thermal expansion), and Young's modulus are monitored during the development of modulational instability of the zone boundary mode. The instability results in the formation of chaotic DBs followed by the transition to thermal equilibrium when DBs disappear due to energy radiation in the form of small-amplitude phonons. It is found that DBs reduce the specific heat for all the considered chain parameters. They increase the thermal expansion when the potential is asymmetric and, as expected, thermal expansion is not observed in the case of symmetric potential. The Young's modulus in the presence of DBs is smaller than in thermal equilibrium for the symmetric potential and for the potential with a small asymmetry, but it is larger than in thermal equilibrium for the potential with greater asymmetry. Our results can be useful for setting experiments on the identification of DBs in crystals by measuring their macroscopic properties.

Explicit kinks in higher-order field theories

We study an example of higher-order field-theoretic model with an eighth-degree polynomial potential -- the $φ^8$ model. We show that for some certain ratios of constants of the potential, the problem of finding kink-type solutions in $(1+1)$-dimensional space-time reduces to solving algebraic equations. For two different ratios of the constants, which determine positions of the vacua, we obtained explicit formulas for kinks in all topological sectors. The properties of the obtained kinks are also studied -- their masses are calculated, and the excitation spectra which could be responsible for the appearance of resonance phenomena in kink-antikink scattering are found.

From thin to thick domain walls: An example of the $φ^8$ model

We demonstrate that for some certain values of parameters of the $(1+1)$-dimensional $φ^8$ model, the kink solutions can be found from polynomial equations. For some selected values of the parameters we give the explicit formulas for the kinks in all topological sectors of the model. Based on the obtained algebraic equations, we show that in a special limiting case, kinks with power-law asymptotics arise in the model, describing, in particular, thick domain walls. Objects of this kind could be of interest for modern cosmology.

Kinks in the relativistic model with logarithmic nonlinearity

We study the properties of a relativistic model with logarithmic nonlinearity. We show that such model allows two types of solutions: topologically trivial (gaussons) and topologically non-trivial (kinks), depending on a sign of the nonlinear coupling. We focus primarily on the kinks' case and study their scattering properties. For the kink-antikink scattering, we have found a critical value of the initial velocity, which separates two different scenarios of scattering. For the initial velocities below this critical value, the kinks form a bound state, which then decays slowly. If the initial velocities are above the critical value, the kinks collide, bounce and eventually escape to infinities. During this process, the higher initial velocity is, the greater is the elasticity of the collision. We also study excitation spectrum of the kink solution.

Vibrations of thick domain walls: How to avoid no-go theorem

The asymptotic properties of the stability potentials of kinks with power-law tails are discussed. In particular, in cosmology such kinks can describe "thick" domain walls. The discrete part of the domain wall excitation spectrum, the profile of which is described by a kink solution with one or both power-law asymptotics, cannot contain levels other than zero (translational) mode. Nevertheless, it can be shown that scenarios are quite possible when long-lived localized vibrations will be excited on the domain wall. This, in turn, can affect the processes of interaction of two or more domain walls.

Superheavy objects composed of nuclear and dark matter

We consider a model of $O$He atomic dark matter formed by Coulomb binding of the hypothetical stable double-charged massive $O^{--}$ particles with nuclei of primordial helium. Such a dark matter can be captured by ordinary matter forming superheavy nuclei. We propose a possibility of self-bound by nuclear and electromagnetic interaction $O$-nuclearites as well as more massive gravitating ones and discuss effect of accumulation of $O$He atoms in stars and their effect in stellar evolution.

Excitation spectra of solitary waves in scalar field models with polynomial self-interaction

We study excitations of solitary waves -- the kinks -- in scalar models with degree eight polynomial self-interaction in (1+1) dimensions. We perform numerical studies of scattering of two kinks with an exponential asymptotic off each other and analyse the occurring resonance phenomena. We connect these phenomena to the energy exchange between the translational and the vibrational modes of the colliding kinks. We also point out that the interaction of two kinks with power-law asymptotic can lead to a long-range interaction between the two kinks.

Scalar triplet on a domain wall: an exact solution

We study a model with a real scalar Higgs field and a scalar triplet field that allows existence of a topological defect -- a domain wall. The wall breaks the global $O(3)$ symmetry of the model, which gives rise to non-Abelian orientational degrees of freedom. We found an exact analytic solution that describes a domain wall with a localized configuration of the triplet field on it. This solution enables one to calculate contributions to the action from the orientational and translational degrees of freedom of the triplet field. We also study the linear stability of the domain wall with the triplet field switched off. We obtain that degrees of freedom localized on the wall can appear or do not appear depending on the parameters of the model.

Deformed compact extra space as dark matter candidate

We elaborate the possibility for a deformed extra space to be considered as the dark matter candidate. To perform calculations a class of two-dimensional extra metrics was considered in the framework of the multidimensional gravity. It was shown that there exists a family of stationary metrics of the extra space possessing point-like defect. Estimation of cross section of scattering of a particle of the ordinary matter on a spatial domain with deformed extra space is in agreement with the observational constraints.

Kink excitation spectra in the (1+1)-dimensional $φ^8$ model

We study excitation spectra of BPS-saturated topological solutions -- the kinks -- of the $φ^8$ scalar field model in $(1+1)$ dimensions, for three different choices of the model parameters. We demonstrate that some of these kinks have a vibrational mode, apart from the trivial zero (translational) excitation. One of the considered kinks is shown to have three vibrational modes. We perform a numerical calculation of the kink-kink scattering in one of the considered variants of the $φ^8$ model, and find the critical collision velocity $v_{\scriptsize \mbox{cr}}$ that separates the different collision regimes: inelastic bounce of the kinks at $v_{\scriptsize \mbox{in}}\ge v_{\scriptsize \mbox{cr}}$, and capture at $v_{\scriptsize \mbox{in}}<v_{\scriptsize \mbox{cr}}$. We also observe escape windows at some values of $v_{\scriptsize \mbox{in}}<v_{\scriptsize \mbox{cr}}$ where the kinks escape to infinity after bouncing off each other two or more times. We analyse the features of these windows and discuss their relation to the resonant energy exchange between the translational and the vibrational excitations of the colliding kinks.

Two-dimensional manifold with point-like defects

We study a class of two-dimensional compact extra spaces isomorphic to the sphere $S^2$ in the framework of multidimensional gravitation. We show that there exists a family of stationary metrics that depend on the initial (boundary) conditions. All these geometries have a singular point. We also discuss the possibility for these deformed extra spaces to be considered as dark matter candidates.

Kink interactions in the (1+1)-dimensional $φ^6$ model

We study kink scattering processes in the (1+1)-dimensional $φ^6$ model in the framework of the collective coordinate approximation. We find critical values of the initial velocities of the colliding kinks. These critical velocities distinguish different regimes of collisions. The exact equation of motion for the $φ^6$ model is also solved numerically with the same initial conditions. We discuss advantages and disadvantages of the collective coordinate approximation, and also outline its applicability limits. Resonance phenomena and the so-called escape windows are also observed in the kink collisions.

Does the Multiple-scattering Series in the Pion-deuteron Scattering Actually Converge?

It is demonstrated that the well-known answer for the multiple-scattering series (MSS) for a light particle interacting to a pair of static nucleons, calculated in the Fixed Centers Approximation (FCA), works well for a wide region of the two-body complex scattering length $a$. However, this approach is not applicable in a narrow region surrounding the real positive $a$ half-axis, where the MSS does not converge. Simultaneously, for real positive $a$'s the 3-body system forms an infinite set of bound states.
