Chiral Symmetry Breaking and External Fields in the Kuperstein-Sonnenschein Model

A novel holographic model of chiral symmetry breaking has been proposed by Kuperstein and Sonnenschein by embedding non-supersymmetric probe D7 and anti-D7 branes in the Klebanov-Witten background. We study the dynamics of the probe flavours in this model in the presence of finite temperature and a constant electromagnetic field. In keeping with the weakly coupled field theory intuition, we find the magnetic field promotes spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry whereas the electric field restores it. The former effect is universally known as the "magnetic catalysis" in chiral symmetry breaking. In the presence of an electric field such a condensation is inhibited and a current flows. Thus we are faced with a steady-state situation rather than a system in equilibrium. We conjecture a definition of thermodynamic free energy for this steady-state phase and using this proposal we study the detailed phase structure when both electric and magnetic fields are present in two representative configurations: mutually perpendicular and parallel.

Searching for an Attractive Force in Holographic Nuclear Physics

We are looking for a holographic explanation of nuclear forces, especially the attractive forces. Recently, the repulsive hard core of a nucleon-nucleon potential was obtained in the Sakai-Sugimoto model, and we show that a generalized version of that model -- with an asymmetric configuration of the flavor D8 branes -- also has an attractive potential. While the repulsive potential stems from the Chern-Simons interactions of the U(2) flavor gauge fields in 5D, the attractive potential is due to a coupling of the gauge fields to a scalar field describing fluctuations of the flavor branes' geometry. At intermediate distances r between baryons -- smaller than R_KK=O(1)/M_{omega meson} but larger than the radius rho=R_KK/sqrt('t Hooft coupling) of the instanton at the core of a baryon -- both the attractive and the repulsive potentials behave as 1/r^2, but the attractive potential is weaker: Depending on the geometry of the flavor D8 branes, the ratio C=-V_attr/V_rep ranges from 0 to 1/9. The 5D scalar fields also affect the isovector tensor and spin-spin forces, and the overall effect is similar to the isoscalar central forces: V(r)->(1-C)*V(r). At longer ranges $r\gtrsim R_{\rm KK}$, we find that the attractive potential decays faster than the repulsive potential, so the net potential is always repulsive. This unrealistic behavior may be peculiar to the Sakai-Sugimoto-like models, or it could be a general problem of the large N_c limit inherent in holography.

Localized Backreacted Flavor Branes in Holographic QCD

We investigate the perturbative (in $g_s N_{D8}$) backreaction of localized D8 branes in D4-D8 systems including in particular the Sakai Sugimoto model. We write down the explicit expressions of the backreacted metric, dilaton and RR form. We find that the backreaction remains small up to a radial value of $u \ll \ell_s/(g_s N_{D8})$, and that the background functions are smooth except at the D8 sources. In this perturbative window, the original embedding remains a solution to the equations of motion. Furthermore, the fluctuations around the original embedding, describing scalar mesons, do not become tachyonic due to the backreaction in the perturbative regime. This is is due to a cancelation between the DBI and CS parts of the D8 brane action in the perturbed background.

Quantum Deconstruction of 5D SQCD

We deconstruct the fifth dimension of 5D SCQD with general numbers of colors and flavors and general 5D Chern-Simons level; the latter is adjusted by adding extra quarks to the 4D quiver. We use deconstruction as a non-stringy UV completion of the quantum 5D theory; to prove its usefulness, we compute quantum corrections to the SQCD_5 prepotential. We also explore the moduli/parameter space of the deconstructed SQCD_5 and show that for |K_CS| < N_F/2 it continues to negative values of 1/(g_5)^2. In many cases there are flop transitions connecting SQCD_5 to exotic 5D theories such as E0, and we present several examples of such transitions. We compare deconstruction to brane-web engineering of the same SQCD_5 and show that the phase diagram is the same in both cases; indeed, the two UV completions are in the same universality class, although they are not dual to each other. Hence, the phase structure of an SQCD_5 (and presumably any other 5D gauge theory) is inherently five-dimensional and does not depends on a UV completion.
