Central Instanton Production

We study the central production of QCD instantons at hadron colliders in events with two large rapidity gaps. These gaps in rapidity are formed by either Pomeron or photon exchanges or a combination of the two. The kT-factorization formalism is used to reduce the factorization scale dependence. We compute for the first time the relevant differential cross-sections for a complete set of central instanton production processes at the LHC, including gluon-induced and quark-induced amplitudes, and also show that the largest contribution comes from processes with Pomeron exchanges where a single gluon from each Pomeron couples to the instanton.

Kinetic Mixing of the Photon with Hidden U(1)s in String Phenomenology

Embeddings of the standard model in type II string theory typically contain a variety of U(1) gauge factors arising from D-branes in the bulk. In general, there is no reason why only one of these - the one corresponding to weak hypercharge - should be massless. Observations require that standard model particles must be neutral (or have an extremely small charge) under additional massless U(1)s, i.e. the latter have to belong to a so called hidden sector. The exchange of heavy messengers, however, can lead to a kinetic mixing between the hypercharge and the hidden-sector U(1)s, that is testable with near future experiments. This provides a powerful probe of the hidden sectors and, as a consequence, of the string theory realisation itself. In the present paper, we show, using a variety of methods, how the kinetic mixing can be derived from the underlying type II string compactification, involving supersymmetric and nonsupersymmetric configurations of D-branes, both in large volumes and in warped backgrounds with fluxes. We first demonstrate by explicit example that kinetic mixing occurs in a completely supersymmetric set-up where we can use conformal field theory techniques. We then develop a supergravity approach which allows us to examine the phenomenon in more general backgrounds, where we find that kinetic mixing is natural in the context of flux compactifications. We discuss the phenomenological consequences for experiments at the low-energy frontier, searching for signatures of light, sub-electronvolt or even massless hidden-sector U(1) gauge bosons and minicharged particles.

Multi-Instanton Calculus in $N=2$ Supersymmetric Gauge Theory

The Seiberg-Witten solution of N=2 supersymmetric SU(2) gauge theory may be viewed as a prediction for the infinite family of constants F_n measuring the n-instanton contribution to the prepotential F. Here we examine the instanton physics directly, in particular the contribution of the general self-dual solution of topological charge n constructed by Atiyah, Drinfeld, Hitchin and Manin (ADHM). In both the bosonic and supersymmetric cases, we determine both the large- and short-distance behavior of all the fields in this background. This allows us to construct the exact classical interaction between n ADHM (super-)instantons mediated by the adjoint Higgs. We calculate the one- and two-instanton contributions to the low-energy Seiberg-Witten effective action, and find precise agreement with their predicted values of F_1 and F_2.

Multi-Instanton Calculus in N=2 Supersymmetric Gauge Theory II: Coupling to Matter

We further discuss the N=2 superinstantons in SU(2) gauge theory, obtained from the general self-dual solutions of topological charge n constructed by Atiyah, Drinfeld, Hitchin and Manin (ADHM). We realize the N=2 supersymmetry algebra as actions on the superinstanton moduli. This allows us to recast in concise superfield notation our previously obtained expression for the exact classical interaction between n ADHM superinstantons mediated by the adjoint Higgs bosons, and moreover, to incorporate N_F flavors of hypermultiplets. We perform explicit 1- and 2-instanton checks of the Seiberg-Witten prepotentials for all N_F and arbitrary hypermultiplet masses. Our results for the low-energy couplings are all in precise agreement with the predictions of Seiberg and Witten except for N_F=4, where we find a finite renormalization of the coupling which is absent in the proposed solution.
