Geant4 FTF Model Description of the NA61/SHINE Collaboration Data on Strange Particle's Production in pp Interactions

The latest data by the NA61/SHINE collaboration on inclusive distributions of $K^{*0}$ and $ϕ$ meson's, $Ξ^-$ and $\bar Ξ^+$ hyperon's production in ${\rm pp}$ interactions at $P_{lab}$ from 40 up to 158 GeV/c are considered. As it was shown before in experimental papers, Monte Carlo models -- EPOS 1.99, UrQMD 3.4 and Pythia 6, cannot describe reasonably well the data. In the presented paper, the yields of the particles are analyzed within the Geant4 FTF model. The meson yields are proportional to the probability of strange quark-antiquark pair production from the vacuum, and the probability to form a vector meson at a given quark-anti-quark content -- $P_{Vec}$. Detailed calculations presented in our paper show that a good description of the data can be reached for $P_{Vec}$ = 0.6 for a meson with one strange quark or antiquark. For a meson contained strange quark and strange antiquark, $P_{Vec}$ = 0.7. For a combination of non-strange quark and antiquark, $P_{Vec}$ = 0.5. The description of the $Ξ^-$ and $\bar Ξ^+$ hyperons requires a change of the diquark fragmentation function into hyperons and a special treatment (rearrangement) of fragmentation of anti-diquark -- diquark strings with low masses.

Geant4 FTF model description of the latest data by the NA61/SHINE collaboration on ${\rm ^{40}Ar+{}^{45}Sc}$ interactions

It is shown that the Geant4 FTF model, which does not include the simulation of the hard parton-parton scattering and the formation of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), describes well the NA61/SHINE data on $π^-$ meson distributions for the interactions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.2, 6.1, 7.6 and 8.8 GeV. At higher energies, $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 11.9 and 16.8 GeV, the model underestimates the data. This is considered as an indication of the formation of QGP at higher energies in central collisions of light and intermediate nuclei than in collisions of heavy nuclei ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}\sim 6$ GeV).

GEANT4 Parameter Tuning Using Professor

The Geant4 toolkit is used extensively in high energy physics to simulate the passage of particles through matter and to predict effects such as detector efficiencies and smearing. Geant4 uses many underlying models to predict particle interaction kinematics, and uncertainty in these models leads to uncertainty in high energy physics measurements. The Geant4 collaboration recently made free parameters in some models accessible through partnership with Geant4 developers. We present a study of the impact of varying parameters in three Geant4 hadronic physics models on agreement with thin target datasets and describe fits to these datasets using the Professor model tuning framework. We find that varying parameters produces substantially better agreement with some datasets, but that more degrees of freedom are required for full agreement. This work is a first step towards a common framework for propagating uncertainties in Geant4 models to high energy physics measurements, and we outline future work required to complete that goal.

Technical Design Report for the PANDA Endcap Disc DIRC

PANDA (anti-Proton ANnihiliation at DArmstadt) is planned to be one of the four main experiments at the future international accelerator complex FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt, Germany. It is going to address fundamental questions of hadron physics and quantum chromodynamics using cooled antiproton beams with a high intensity and and momenta between 1.5 and 15 GeV/c. PANDA is designed to reach a maximum luminosity of 2x10^32 cm^2 s. Most of the physics programs require an excellent particle identification (PID). The PID of hadronic states at the forward endcap of the target spectrometer will be done by a fast and compact Cherenkov detector that uses the detection of internally reflected Cherenkov light (DIRC) principle. It is designed to cover the polar angle range from 5° to 22° and to provide a separation power for the separation of charged pions and kaons up to 3 standard deviations (s.d.) for particle momenta up to 4 GeV/c in order to cover the important particle phase space. This document describes the technical design and the expected performance of the novel PANDA Disc DIRC detector that has not been used in any other high energy physics experiment (HEP) before. The performance has been studied with Monte-Carlo simulations and various beam tests at DESY and CERN. The final design meets all PANDA requirements and guarantees suffcient safety margins.

Dynamics of Anti-Proton -- Protons and Anti-Proton -- Nucleus Reactions

A short review of simulation results of anti-proton-proton and anti-proton-nucleus interactions within the framework of Geant4 FTF (Fritiof) model is presented. The model uses the main assumptions of the Quark-Gluon-String Model or Dual Parton Model. The model assumes production and fragmentation of quark-anti-quark and diquark-anti-diquark strings in the mentioned interactions. Key ingredients of the model are cross sections of string creation processes and an usage of the LUND string fragmentation algorithm. They allow one to satisfactory describe a large set of experimental data, especially, a strange particle production, Lambda hyperons and K mesons.

Empirical Parameterization of Nucleon-Nucleon Elastic Scattering Amplitude at High Beam Momenta for Glauber Calculations and Monte Carlo Simulations

A parameterization of the nucleon-nucleon elastic scattering amplitude is needed for future experiments with nucleon and nuclear beams in the beam momentum range of 2 -- 50 GeV/c/nucleon. There are many parameterizations of the amplitude at $P_{lab} >$ 25--50 GeV/c, and at $P_{lab} \leq$ 5 GeV/c. Our paper is aimed to cover the range between 5 -- 50 GeV/c. The amplitude is used in Glauber calculations of various cross sections and Monte Carlo simulations of nucleon-nucleon scatterings. Usually, the differential nucleon-nucleon elastic scattering cross sections are described by an exponential expression. Corresponding experimental data on $pp$ interactions at $|t|>$ 0.005 (GeV/c)$^2$ and $|t|\leq$ 0.125 (GeV/c)$^2$ have been fit. We propose formulae to approximate the beam momentum dependence of these parameters in the momentum range considered. The same was done for $np$ interactions at $|t|\leq$ 0.5 (GeV/c)$^2$. Expressions for the momentum dependence of the total and elastic cross sections, and the ratio of real to imaginary parts of the amplitude at zero momentum transfer are also given for $pp$ and $np$ collisions. These results are sufficient for a first approximation of the Glauber calculations. For more exact calculations we fit the data at $|t|>$ 0.005 (GeV/c)$^2$ without restrictions on the maximum value of $|t|$ using an expression based on two coherent exponential. The parameters of the fits are found for the beam momentum range 2 -- 50 GeV/c.

Feasibility studies of time-like proton electromagnetic form factors at PANDA at FAIR

Simulation results for future measurements of electromagnetic proton form factors at \PANDA (FAIR) within the PandaRoot software framework are reported. The statistical precision with which the proton form factors can be determined is estimated. The signal channel $\bar p p \to e^+ e^-$ is studied on the basis of two different but consistent procedures. The suppression of the main background channel, $\textit{i.e.}$ $\bar p p \to π^+ π^-$, is studied. Furthermore, the background versus signal efficiency, statistical and systematical uncertainties on the extracted proton form factors are evaluated using two different procedures. The results are consistent with those of a previous simulation study using an older, simplified framework. However, a slightly better precision is achieved in the PandaRoot study in a large range of momentum transfer, assuming the nominal beam conditions and detector performance.

Study of collective flows of protons and $π^{-}$ -mesons in p(C, Ta) and He(Li, C) collisions at momenta of 4.2, 4.5 and 10 AGeV/c

Collective flows of protons and $π^{-}$-mesons are studied at the momenta of 4.2, 4.5 and 10 AGeV/c for p(C, Ta) and He(Li, C) interactions. The data were obtained from the streamer chamber (SKM-200-GIBS) and from the Propane Bubble Chamber (PBC-500) systems utilized at JINR. The method of Danielewicz and Odyniec has been employed in determining the directed transverse flow of particles. The values of the transverse flow parameter and the strength of the anisotropic emission were defined for each interacting nuclear pair. It is found that the directed flows of protons and pions decrease with increase of the energy and the mass numbers of colliding nucleus pairs. The $π^{-}$-meson and proton flows exhibit opposite directions in all studied interactions, and the flows of protons are directed in the reaction plane. The Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamical Model (UrQMD), enlarged by the Statistical Multi-fragmentation Model (SMM), satisfactorily describes obtained experimental results.

The effect of uu diquark suppression in proton splitting in Monte Carlo event generators

Monte Carlo event generators assume that protons split into (uu)-diquarks and d-quarks with a probability of 1/3 in strong interactions. It is shown in this paper that using a value of 1/6 for the probability allows one to describe at a semi-quantitative level the NA49 Collaboration data for $p+p\rightarrow p+X$ reactions at 158 GeV/c. The Fritiof (FTF) model of Geant4 was used to simulate the reactions. The reduced weight of the (uu)-diquarks in protons is expected in the instanton model.

Toward Description of $pp$ and $p{\rm C}$ Interactions at High Energies: Problems of Fritiof-based Models

How do the models (Fritiof 1.6, Fritiof 7.0, UrQMD 3.3 and Hijing 1.383) describe experimental data of NA61/SHINE and NA49 Collaborations on $pp$ and $p{\rm C}$ interactions at high energies? An answer on this question is given in the paper. It is shown that the UrQMD model does not reproduce the energy dependence of $π^-$ meson production in $pp$-interactions; the Fritiof 1.6 and the Fritiof 7.0 models underestimate the meson production on $\sim$ 10 %; the Hijing model overestimates the data on $\sim$ 10 %. A change of a LUND fragmentation function parameter in the Fritiof models 1.6/7.0 allows to describe the data. A decreasing of probabilities of binary processes in the UrQMD model like $p+p\rightarrow N+N'$ and so on, allows one to describe the data, thus a problem of a correct accounting of the processes arises. An increasing of a probability of the single diffraction dissociation in the Hijing model from 35 % to 50 % allows to describe the data, though a spectrum of masses produced in the diffraction is not satisfactory. A description of the diffraction is a problem in all the models.

Toward UrQMD Model Description of pp and pC Interactions at High Energies

It is found that UrQMD model version 3.3 does not describe NA61/SHINE Collaboration data on π-meson production in pp interactions at energies 20 - 80 GeV. At the same time, it describes quite well the NA49 Collaboration data on the meson production in pp and pC interactions at 158 GeV. The Collaborations do not consider feedback of η-meson decays. All versions of the UrQMD model assume that η-mesons are "stable". An inclusion of the decays into calculations leads to 2--3 % increase of the meson production which is not enough for description of the data. Possible ways of the model improvements are considered. Conclusions of the paper are: accounting of η-meson decays is not essential for a description of experimental data; a new tuning of the UrQMD model parameters is needed for a successful description of pp and pC interactions at high energies; inclusion of the low mass diffraction dissociation in the UrQMD model would be desirable.

Calculation of light nucleus reaction cross sections in Geant4

Total reaction cross sections of light projectile nucleus (H-2, H-3, He-3 and He-4) interactions with nuclei are calculated using Geant4 models, and compared with experimental data. It is shown that the models give various predictions at low energies, in the region of the Coulomb barrier. "Shen model" (W.-Q. Shen et al., Nucl. Phys. {\bf A491} (1989) 130) is identified as an improvement over other models.

Description of the Totem experimental data on elastic pp-scattering at sqrt(s)=7 TeV in the framework of unified systematic of elastic scattering data

An unified systematic of elastic (anti)proton-proton scattering data is proposed based on a simple expression for the process amplitude - f(q)=A[(πdq)/sh(πdq)][i J_1(Rq)/(Rq)+ρJ_0(Rq)]. The parameters R and d are obtained at a fitting of (anti)proton-proton experimental data on differential cross sections from Plab=1 GeV/c up to ISR energies. The fitting gives extra-ordinary good results, χ^2/NoF ~ 1 of below at |t|< 1.75 (GeV/c)^2. An extrapolation of the parameter's energy dependencies to the LHC energies allows excellent description of the Totem data up to the second diffraction maximum. Predictions for other LHC energies are presented also. The amplitude provides one with parameterizations of total and elastic cross sections. Its impact parameter representation corresponds to the 2-dimensional Fermi-function - 1/[1+exp((b-R)/d)], which is very useful for Glauber calculations of nucleus-nucleus cross sections at super high energies. It is shown for the first time that experimental high |t| elastic scattering has a weak energy dependency. This allows to describe high |t| tail of the Totem data.

Improved Systematic of pp Elastic Scattering Data

Unified systematic of elastic scattering data (USESD) proposed by the authors (arxiv:1111.4984 [hep-ph]) is based on symmetrized 2-dimensional Fermi distribution for pp elastic scattering amplitude in the impact parameter representation. It allows to describe differential cross sections of the reactions up to |t| ~ 1.75 (GeV/c)$^2$. To extend it to higher |t| values we consider a two coherent exponential parametrization of the cross sections and show that it cannot describe the cross sections at small |t| at $P_{lab}>$ 10 GeV/c. We extract a description of high |t| region from the parameterization and couple it with USESD. As a result, we obtained a good description of all pp elastic scattering data at $P_{lab}>$ 10 GeV/c. It can be easily used in Glauber Monte Carlo codes for calculations of nucleus-nucleus interaction properties.

Simulation of Light Antinucleus-Nucleus Interactions

Creations of light anti-nuclei (anti-deuterium, anti-tritium, anti-He3 and anti-He4) are observed by collaborations at the LHC and RHIC accelerators. Some cosmic ray experiments are aimed to find the anti-nuclei in cosmic rays. To support the experimental studies of the anti-nuclei a Monte Carlo simulation of anti-nuclei interactions with matter is implemented in the Geant4 toolkit. The implementation combines practically all known theoretical approaches to the problem of antinucleon-nucleon interactions.

The Possibility of New Physics in pp Elastic Scattering at LHC

Modern models of high energy elastic hadron-hadron scattering predict an oscillation character of differential cross sections at the LHC energy of 14 TeV and at a sufficiently high momentum transfer. The Totem collaboration did not see the oscillations at 7 TeV. According to some predictions, the oscillations are weak at 7 TeV in the studied 4-momentum transfer range (|t|< 2.5 GeV$^2$). They may be beyond the range of the experiment. But a direct extension of the Totem collaboration data on the pp-scattering at 7 TeV above |t|\sim 2.5 GeV$^2$ contradicts previous measurements. Thus the collaboration can discover either the oscillations at large |t| or a change of the differential cross section behavior in the high |t| region (|t|> 2.5 GeV$^2$).

How to Improve UrQMD Model to Describe NA61/SHINE Experimental Data

The NA61/SHINE collaboration measured inclusive cross sections of pi+ and pi- meson production in the interactions of 31 GeV/c proton with carbon nuclei at small emission angles (0 - 420 mrad). The collaboration presented also predictions of Monte Carlo models - FLUKA, VENUS and UrQMD, in a comparison with the data. The worst description of the data was observed for UrQMD model results. In the present paper it is shown that the drawback of the UrQMD model is connected with an inaccurate treatment of low mass string fragmentation. The strings appeared at a diffraction of target nucleons. A simple patch is proposed to overcome the problem.

Tuning of the GEANT4 FRITIOF (FTF) Model Using NA61/SHINE Experimental Data

The NA61/SHINE collaboration measured inclusive cross sections of π^+ and π^- meson production in the interactions of 31 GeV/c protons with carbon nuclei at forward emission angles (0 - 420 mrad). The collaboration also presented predictions of Monte Carlo models - FLUKA, VENUS and UrQMD, in comparison with the data. A careful analysis shows that deviations of the FLUKA and VENUS predictions from the data have different tendencies. The worst description of the data was observed for the UrQMD model results. All the models assume the creation of quark-gluon strings in the interactions, but it is complicated to analyze the models in order to find the source of the deviations. Thus, the quark-gluon string model - FRITIOF (FTF) - was implemented in the GEANT4 toolkit and is used to understand the deviations mentioned above. It was found that the most important factor influencing the FTF calculations is the sampling of quark-gluon string masses. The other factors/parameters are not essential for a description of the data. Also, a good description of the data is achieved by the FTF model.
