The temperature and free energy of multi-black hole systems

In the present paper, we compute the Euclidean action of a generic system consisting of $N$ arbitrary Kerr-Newman black holes located on the symmetry axis and separated from each other by massless struts. This allows us to introduce the {\it Hawking average temperature} (HAT) $\hat T$ of the multi-black hole system via the condition of vanishing the entire set of terms involving the singular horizons due to periodic time, and the resulting formula for this temperature contains solely the surface gravities $κ_i$ and horizon areas $A^H_i$ of the black hole constituents. We also show that the corresponding expression for the {\it free energy} of the system defined by $\hat T$ is consistent with the first law of thermodynamics and Smarr mass relations.

The exterior field of slowly and rapidly rotating neutron stars: Rehabilitating spacetime metrics involving hyperextreme objects

The 4-parameter exact solution presumably describing the exterior gravitational field of a generic neutron star is presented in a concise explicit form defined by only three potentials. In the equatorial plane, the metric functions of the solution are found to be given by particularly simple expressions that make them very suitable for the use in concrete applications. Following Pappas and Apostolatos, we perform a comparison of the multipole structure of the solution with the multipole moments of the known physically realistic Berti-Stergioulas numerical models of neutron stars to argue that the hyperextreme sectors of the solution are not less (but possibly even more) important for the correct description of rapidly rotating neutron stars than the subextreme sector involving exclusively the black-hole constituents. We have also worked out in explicit form an exact analog of the well-known Hartle-Thorne approximate metric.

Are known maximal extensions of the Kerr and Kerr-Newman spacetimes physically meaningful and analytic?

In this paper we argue that the well-known maximal extensions of the Kerr and Kerr-Newman spacetimes characterized by a specific gluing (on disks) of two asymptotically flat regions with ADM masses of opposite signs are physically inconsistent and actually non-analytic. We also discover a correct geometrical interpretation of the surface $r=0$, $t={\rm const}$ - a dicone in the case of the Kerr solution and a more sophisticated surface of non-zero Gaussian curvature in the case of the Kerr-Newman solution - which suggests that the problem of constructing the maximal analytic extensions for these stationary spacetimes is likely to be performed within the models with only one asymptotically flat region, in which case a smooth crossing of the ring singularity becomes possible, for instance, after carrying out an appropriate transformation of the radial coordinate.

Metric of two balancing Kerr particles in physical parametrization

The present paper aims at elaborating a completely physical representation for the general 4-parameter family of the extended double-Kerr spacetimes describing two spinning sources in gravitational equilibrium. This involved problem is solved in a concise analytical form by using the individual Komar masses and angular momenta as arbitrary parameters, and the simplest equatorially symmetric specialization of the general expressions obtained by us yields the physical representation for the well-known Dietz-Hoenselaers superextreme case of two balancing identical Kerr constituents. The existence of the physically meaningful "black hole-superextreme object" equilibrium configurations permitted by the general solution may be considered as a clear indication that the spin-spin repulsion force might actually be by far stronger than expected earlier, when only the balance between two superextreme Kerr sources was thought possible. We also present the explicit analytical formulas relating the equilibrium states in the double-Kerr and double-Reissner-Nordström configurations.

On the Properties of Exact Solutions Endowed with Negative Mass

It is shown that various pathological properties of spacetimes can be explained by the presence of negative mass, including the cases when the total mass of the solution is a positive quantity. As an illustration, we consider several well-known stationary axisymmetric vacuum and electrovac solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations. Our investigation naturally leads to a critique of the known maximal extensions of the Kerr and Kerr-Newman spacetimes which turn out to be neither analytic nor physically meaningful.

Schwarzschild black hole levitating in the hyperextreme Kerr field

The equilibrium configurations between a Schwarzschild black hole and a hyperextreme Kerr object are shown to be described by a three-parameter subfamily of the extended double-Kerr solution. For this subfamily, its Ernst potential and corresponding metric functions, we provide a physical representation which employs as arbitrary parameters the individual Komar masses and relative coordinate distance between the sources. The calculation of horizon's local angular velocity induced in the Schwarzschild black hole by the Kerr constituent yields a simple expression inversely proportional to the square of the distance parameter.

Singularities in the Kerr-Newman and charged $δ=2$ Tomimatsu-Sato spacetimes endowed with negative mass

The Kerr-Newman solution with negative mass is shown to develop a massless ring singularity off the symmetry axis. The singularity is located inside the region with closed timelike curves which has topology of a torus and lies outside the ergoregion. These characteristics are also shared by the charged Tomimatsu-Sato delta=2 solution with negative total mass to which in particular a simple form in terms of four polynomials is provided.

Stationary black diholes

In this paper we present and analyze the simplest physically meaningful model for stationary black diholes - a binary configuration of counter-rotating Kerr-Newman black holes endowed with opposite electric charges - elaborated in a physical parametrization on the basis of one of the Ernst-Manko-Ruiz equatorially antisymmetric solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations. The model saturates the Gabach-Clement inequality for interacting black holes with struts, and in the absence of rotation it reduces to the Emparan-Teo electric dihole solution. The physical characteristics of each dihole constituent satisfy identically the well-known Smarr's mass formula.

On non-disk geometry of r = 0 in Kerr-de Sitter and Kerr-Newman-de Sitter spacetimes

Gaussian curvature of the two-surface r=0, t=const is calculated for the Kerr-de Sitter and Kerr-Newman-de Sitter solutions, yielding non-zero analytical expressions for both the cases. The results obtained, on the one hand, exclude the possibility for that surface to be a disk and, on the other hand, permit one to establish a correct geometrical interpretation of that surface for each of the two solutions.

The Breton-Manko equatorially antisymmetric binary configuration revisited

The Breton-Manko solution for two identical counter-rotating Kerr-Newman charged masses is rewritten in the physical parametrization involving Komar quantities. The new form of the solution turns out to be very convenient for verifying that the black-hole sector of the Bretón-Manko binary configuration saturates a recent geometric inequality for interacting black holes with struts discovered by Gabach Clement.

A combined Majumdar-Papapetrou-Bonnor field as extreme limit of the double-Reissner-Nordstrom solution

The general extreme limit of the double-Reissner-Nordstrom solution is worked out in explicit analytical form involving prolate spheroidal coordinates. We name it the combined Majumdar-Papapetrou-Bonnor field to underline the fact that it contains as particular cases the two-body specialization of the well-known Majumdar-Papapetrou solution and Bonnor's three-parameter electrostatic field. To the latter we give a precise physical interpretation as describing a pair of non-rotating extremal black holes with unequal masses and unequal opposite charges kept apart by a strut, the absolute values of charges exceeding the respective (positive) values of masses.

On a Simple Representation of the Kinnersley-Chitre Metric

A concise form of the Kinnersley-Chitre five-parameter metric for a spinning mass is obtained by exploiting a remarkable similarity between the metric's factor structure and the analogous structure of the Tomimatsu-Sato solutions with even distortion parameter delta. The corresponding general subfamily of asymptotically flat spacetimes containing four arbitrary real parameters is considered, and all configurations describing two extreme Kerr sources separated by a strut are identified and briefly discussed.

On the physical interpretation of the delta=2 Tomimatsu-Sato solution

The physical properties of the Tomimatsu-Sato delta=2 spacetime are analyzed, with emphasis on the issues of the negative mass distribution in this spacetime and the origin of a massless ring singularity which are treated with the aid of an equatorially asymmetric two-body configuration arising within the framework of the analytically extended double-Kerr solution. As a by-product of this analysis it is proved analytically that the Kerr spacetime with negative mass always has a massless naked ring singularity off the symmetry axis accompanied by a region with closed timelike curves, and it is also pointed out that the Boyer-Lindquist coordinates in that case should be introduced in a different manner than in the case of the Kerr solution with positive mass.

Stationary configurations of two extreme black holes obtainable from the Kinnersley-Chitre solution

Stationary axisymmetric systems of two extreme Kerr sources separated by a massless strut, which arise as subfamilies of the well-known Kinnersley-Chitre solution, are studied. We present explicit analytical formulas for the individual masses and angular momenta of the constituents and establish the range of the parameters for which such systems can be regarded as describing black holes. The mass-angular momentum relations and the interaction force in the black-hole configurations are also analyzed. Furthermore, we construct a charging generalization of the Kinnersley-Chitre metric and, as applications of the general formulas obtained, discuss two special cases describing a pair of identical co- and counterrotating extreme Kerr-Newman black holes kept apart by a conical singularity. From our analysis it follows in particular that the equality $m^2-a^2-e^2=0$ relating the mass, angular momentum per unit mass and electric charge of a single Kerr-Newman extreme black hole is no longer verified by the analogous extreme black-hole constituents in binary configurations.

On interrelations between Sibgatullin's and Alekseev's approaches to the construction of exact solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations

The integral equations involved in Alekseev's "monodromy transform" technique are shown to be simple combinations of Sibgatullin's integral equations and normalizing conditions. An additional complex conjugation introduced by Alekseev in the integrands makes his scheme mathematically inconsistent; besides, in the electrovac case all Alekseev's principal value integrals contain an intrinsic error which has never been identified before. We also explain how operates a non-trivial double-step algorithm devised by Alekseev for rewriting, by purely algebraic manipulations and in a different (more complicated) parameter set, any particular specialization of the known analytically extended N-soliton electrovac solution obtained in 1995 with the aid of Sibgatullin's method.

Remarks on the mass-angular momentum relations for two extreme Kerr sources in equilibrium

The general analysis of the relations between masses and angular momenta in the configurations composed of two balancing extremal Kerr particles is made on the basis of two exact solutions arising as extreme limits of the well-known double-Kerr spacetime. We show that the inequality M^2 >= |J| characteristic of an isolated Kerr black hole is verified by all the extremal components of the Tomimatsu and Dietz-Hoenselaers solutions. At the same time, the inequality can be violated by the total masses and total angular momenta of these binary systems, and we identify all the cases when such violation occurs.

Post-Newtonian parameters for general black hole and spherically symmetric p-brane solutions

Black hole p-brane solutions for a wide class of intersection rules are considered. The solutions are defined on a manifold which contains a product of n-1 Ricci-flat "internal'' spaces. The post-Newtonian parameters "beta" and "gamma" corresponding to a 4-dimensional section of the metric for general intersection rules are studied. It is shown that "beta" does not depend but "gamma" depends on brane intersections. For "block-orthogonal" intersection rules spherically symmetric solutions are considered, and explicit relations for post-Newtonian parameters are obtained. The bounds on parameters of solutions following from observational restrictions in the Solar system are presented.

Remarks on the Charged, Magnetized Tomimatsu-Sato $δ=2$ Solution

The full metric describing a charged, magnetized generalization of the Tomimatsu-Sato (TS) $δ=2$ solution is presented in a concise explicit form. We use it to investigate some physical properties of the solution; in particular, we point out the existence of naked ring singularities in the hyperextreme TS metrics, the fact previously overlooked by the researchers, and we also demonstrate that the ring singularities can be eliminated by sufficiently strong magnetic fields in the subextreme case, while in the hyperextreme case the magnetic field can move singularities to the equatorial plane.
