Electrically charged supermassive twin stars

By assuming that ultra dense hybrid neutron stars are endowed with a distribution of electric charge, we study the corresponding twin star solutions and their properties resulting from a sharp first order transition from confined hadronic to a deconfined quark phase. Two distinct quark matter equations of state with increasing stiffness are considered and the values for the maximum gravitational masses of the hadronic and hybrid twin configurations are obtained for different values of the total electric charge. Interestingly, our calculations indicate that sharp transitions make charged twin hybrid stars more massive than their neutral counterparts, and that the {$\SI{2}{M_{\odot}}$ constraint from PSR J0740+6620} is surpassed for standard values of electric charge and can be considered stable only satisfying $\partial M/\partial ε_0 > 0$. In particular, our charged stellar models reach masses even higher than the unknown compact object measured in the GW190814 event.

Photoproduction of relativistic QED bound states in hadronic collisions

In this paper we investigate the photoproduction of QED bound states in proton -- proton, proton -- nucleus and nucleus -- nucleus collisions at RHIC, LHC and FCC energies considering an accurate treatment of the absorptive corrections and for the nuclear form factor. The total cross sections for the production of singlet and triplet $(l^+ l^-)$ states, with $l = e,\, μ, \, τ$, are estimated and a detailed analysis of the photoproduction of singlet QED bound states is performed considering the rapidity ranges covered by central and forward detectors. The impact of the Coulomb corrections on the parapositronium production in heavy ion collisions is estimated. We predict a large number of events associated to the production of ($e^+ e^-$) and ($μ^+ μ^-$) states in hadronic collisions.

A model of diffractive excitation in $pp$ collisions at high energies

A phenomenological model for the description of the single and double diffractive excitation in $pp$ collisions at high energies is presented. Considering the Good -- Walker approach, we propose a model for the eigenstates of the scattering operator and for the treatment of the interaction between them, with the high energy behavior of the cross section driven by perturbative QCD. The behavior of the total, elastic, single and double diffractive cross sections are analyzed and predictions for the energies of Run 3 of the LHC and those of the Cosmic Rays experiments are derived. We demonstrate that the model describes the current data for the energy dependence of the cross sections. A comparison with the recent data for the $ρ$ parameter and the differential elastic cross section are also presented and shortcomings of the current model are discussed.

A phenomenological analysis of the nonperturbative QCD contributions for the photon wave function

The photon -- induced interactions, present in $ep$, $eA$, $pp$, $pA$, $AA$ and $e^+ e^-$ collisions, are expressed within the color dipole approach in terms of the photon wave function, which describes the transition of the photon into a quark -- antiquark color dipole. Such quantity is usually calculated using perturbation theory assuming that long distance corrections associated to strong interactions can be neglected. In this paper we investigate the impact of these nonperturbative QCD (npQCD) corrections to the description of the photon wave function for dipoles of large size in several observables measured at HERA, LEP and LHC. We assume a phenomenological ansatz for the treatment of these npQCD corrections and constrain the free parameters of our model using the experimental data for the photoproduction cross section. The predictions for the $γγ$ cross section, exclusive $ρ$ production in $ep$ collisions and the rapidity distribution for the $ρ$ production in $PbPb$ collisions are compared with the data. We demonstrate that the inclusion of the nonperturbative QCD corrections improves the description of processes that are dominated by large dipoles.

An introduction to strange stars

The description of the heaviest neutron stars observed in Nature depends on the understanding of the physical concepts present in General Relativity and Quantum Chromodynamics. In this work, we review the basic concepts need to describe strange stars, constituted by up, down and strange quarks, which is one of the possible alternatives to describe the general properties of the most dense neutron stars. We will review the Bodmer-Witten-Terazawa hypothesis, which states that strange matter is absolutely stable in relation to ordinary nuclear matter, and discuss the basic properties that characterize strange stars. Our goal is to present the necessary concepts to understand this important theme of Astroparticles.

Dark photons from pions produced in ultraperipheral $PbPb$ collisions

In this letter we propose the search of dark photons in the decay of pions produced by $γγ$ interactions in ultraperipheral $PbPb$ collisions. The cross section is estimated considering an accurate treatment for the absorptive corrections and for the nuclear form factor. Predictions for the event rates are presented considering the expected luminosities for the LHC, High -- Luminosity LHC and High -- Energy LHC as well as for the Future Circular Collider. Our results indicate that a future experimental analysis of the pion production in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions can be useful to probe the dark photon production and constrain its properties.

Electrically charged strange stars with an interacting quark matter equation of state

The properties of electrically charged strange quark stars predicted by an interacting quark matter equation of state (EoS) based on cold and dense perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) are investigated. The stability of strange stars is analyzed considering different models for the electric charge distribution inside the star as well as for distinct values for the total electric charge. A comparison with the predictions derived using the MIT bag model is also presented. We show that the presence of a net electric charge inside strange stars implies in a larger maximum mass in comparison to their neutral counterparts. Moreover, we demonstrate that the pQCD EoS implies larger values for the maximum mass of charged strange stars, with very heavy charged stars being stable systems against radial oscillations. For an electric charge distribution given by $q(r) = βr^3$, the pQCD EoS implies unstable configurations for large values of the renormalization scale as well as for large values of $β$, in contrast to the MIT bag model predictions.

Exclusive and diffractive $γγ$ production in $PbPb$ collisions at the LHC, HE -- LHC and FCC

In this paper we present a detailed analysis of the contribution of the Light -- by -- Light (LbL), Durham and double diffractive processes for the diphoton production in ultraperipheral $PbPb$ collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), High -- Energy LHC (HE -- LHC) and Future Circular Collider (FCC). The acceptance of the central and forward LHC detectors is taken into account and predictions for the invariant mass, rapidity, transverse momentum and acoplanarity distributions are presented. Our results indicate that the contribution of the Durham and double diffractive processes can be strongly suppressed by the exclusivity cuts, which will allow to perform a precise analysis of the LbL scattering, as well the search of beyond Standard Model physics in this final state.

Exclusive heavy quark photoproduction in $pp$, $pPb$ and $PbPb$ collisions at the LHC and FCC energies

In this paper we present a comprehensive analysis of the exclusive heavy quark photoproduction in $pp$, $pPb$ and $PbPb$ collisions at LHC and FCC energies using the color dipole formalism and taking into account of nonlinear corrections to the QCD dynamics. We estimate the rapidity distributions and cross sections for the charm and bottom production considering three phenomenological models for the dipole-proton scattering amplitude that are able to describe the $ep$ HERA data. Our results indicate that a future experimental analysis of this process is feasible, which will allow us to improve our understanding of the QCD dynamics.

In this letter we present, for the first time, the results for the photoproduction of massive gauge bosons in proton -- proton, proton -- Lead and Lead -- Lead collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), High -- Energy LHC (HE -- LHC) and Future Circular Collider (FCC). Predictions for the rapidity distributions and total cross sections are presented. We predict a large number of events in the rapidity range probed by the LHC detectors, which implies that this process can be used to probe the photoproduction of massive gauge bosons as well to perform the search of Beyond Standard Model physics.

Photoproduction of pentaquarks states at the LHC

In this paper we investigate the production of pentaquark states in the photon -- proton interactions present in hadronic collisions at the RHIC and LHC. We consider two phenomenological models for the $J/Ψ$ photoproduction that consider the presence of the $P_c(4312)$, $P_c(4440)$ and $P_c(4457)$ resonances in the $s$ -- channel of the $γp \rightarrow J/Ψp$ reaction. The rapidity distribution is estimated for $pA$ collisions at the RHIC and LHC. Predictions for $pPb$, $Pb \, Ar$ and $Pb \,He$ fixed -- target collisions at the LHC are also presented. We demonstrate that the experimental analysis of the $J/Ψ$ photoproduction in fixed -- target collisions can provide complementary and independent checks on these states, and help to understand their underlying nature.

Production of axionlike particles in $PbPb$ collisions at the LHC, HE -- LHC and FCC: A phenomenological analysis

The production of axionlike particles (ALP) in ultraperipheral $PbPb$ collisions (UPHIC) is investigated considering the energies of the next run of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and of the future High Energy -- LHC (HE -- LHC) and Future Circular Collider (FCC). Assuming four different combinations for the ALP mass and coupling and the typical exclusivity cuts for central and forward detectors, we estimate the cross section and invariant mass, rapidity, transverse momentum and {acoplanarity} distributions associated to the diphoton final state produced in the $γγ\rightarrow a \rightarrow γγ$ subprocesses. A detailed analysis of the backgrounds is performed. We demonstrate that the backgrounds can be strongly reduced by the exclusivity cuts and that a forward detector, as the LHCb, is ideal to probe an ALP with small mass. Finally, our results indicate that a future experimental analysis of the diphoton final state in UPHIC can probe the existence and properties of axionlike particles.

Thermal radiation and inclusive production in the running coupling $k_T$ -- factorization approach

The characteristics of the thermal radiation are investigated using a two - component model, with the hard component being described by the Color Glass Condensate formalism. The inclusive transverse momentum spectra of charged hadrons produced in proton - proton and proton - nucleus collisions at LHC energies and large - $p_T$ are estimated using the running coupling $k_T$ - factorization formula and the solution of the Balitsky - Kovchegov equation. Our results indicate that the thermal term is necessary to describe the experimental data and that the effective thermal temperature has an energy dependence similar to the saturation scale. We demonstrate that the enhancement of the thermal temperature in $pPb$ collisions is consistent with that predicted by the saturation scale.

In this paper we investigate the production of a true muonium state, which is an atom consisting of a $μ^+ μ^-$ bound state, by $γγ$ interactions in ultraperipheral $PbPb$ collisions considering an accurate treatment of the absorptive corrections and for the nuclear form factor. The rapidity distributions and cross sections are estimated considering the RHIC, LHC and FCC energies. Our results indicate that the experimental analysis can be useful to observe, for the first time, the true muonium state.

Exclusive and diffractive quarkonium -- pair production at the LHC and FCC

The production of a quarkonium -- pair in exclusive and diffractive processes in $pp$ collisions at the LHC and FCC energies is investigated. We consider the $J/ΨJ/Ψ$ and $ΥΥ$ production in these processes and present predictions for the transverse momentum and rapidity distributions considering the kinematical ranges expected to be covered by central and forward detectors. Results for the cross sections are also presented. Our results indicate that the double $J/Ψ$ production is dominated by the exclusive process, while the double $Υ$ production receive a large contribution of the diffractive process. The impact of the modelling of the gap survival factor on our predictions is discussed.

Single inclusive jet photoproduction at very forward rapidities in $pp$ and $pPb$ collisions at the LHC

The particle production at very forward rapidities is expected to be sensitive to the non-linear effects in the QCD dynamics at high energies. In this paper we present, for the first time, the predictions of the Color Dipole formalism for the single inclusive jet photoproduction in $pp$ and $pPb$ collisions considering the very forward rapidities probed by the CMS-CASTOR calorimeter, which will be characterized by a jet in the rapidity range of $5.2 \le Y \le 6.6$, a rapidity gap in the rapidity range probed by the central CMS detector and one of the incident hadrons remaining intact in the final state. The transverse momentum distributions are estimated considering the more recent phenomenological models for the dipole-proton scattering amplitude, which are based on the Color Glass Condensate formalism and are able to describe the inclusive and exclusive $ep$ HERA data. Our results indicate that a future experimental analysis of this process is, in principle, feasible and useful to constrain the description of the QCD dynamics at high energies.

Bottom production in Photon and Pomeron -- induced interactions at the LHC

In this paper we present a detailed comparison of the bottom production in gluon -- gluon, photon -- gluon, photon -- photon, pomeron -- gluon, pomeron -- pomeron and pomeron -- photon interactions at the LHC. The transverse momentum, pseudo -- rapidity and $ξ$ dependencies of the cross sections are calculated at LHC energy using the Forward Physics Monte Carlo (FPMC), which allows to obtain realistic predictions for the bottom production with one or two leading intact protons. Moreover, predictions for the the kinematical range probed by the LHCb Collaboration are also presented. Our results indicate that the analysis of the single diffractive events is feasible using the Run I LHCb data.

Diffractive $ρ$ production at small $x$ in future Electron - Ion Colliders

The future Electron - Ion ($eA$) Collider is expected to probe the high energy regime of the QCD dynamics, with the exclusive vector meson production cross section being one of the most promising observables. In this paper we complement previous studies of exclusive processes presenting a comprehensive analysis of diffractive $ρ$ production at small $x$. We compute the coherent and incoherent cross sections taking into account non-linear QCD dynamical effects and considering different models for the dipole - proton scattering amplitude and for the vector meson wave function. The dependence of these cross sections with the energy, photon virtuality, nuclear mass number and squared momentum transfer is analysed in detail. Moreover, we compare the non-linear predictions with those obtained in the linear regime. Finally, we also estimate the exclusive photon, $J/Ψ$ and $ϕ$ production and compare with the results obtained for $ρ$ production. Our results demonstrate that the analysis of diffractive $ρ$ production in future electron - ion colliders will be important to understand the non-linear QCD dynamics.

Double vector meson production in photon - hadron interactions at hadronic colliders

In this paper we analyse the double vector meson production in photon -- hadron ($γh$) interactions at $pp/pA/AA$ collisions and present predictions for the $ρρ$, $J/ΨJ/Ψ$ and $ρJ/Ψ$ production considering the double scattering mechanism. We estimate the total cross sections and rapidity distributions at LHC energies and compare our results with the predictions for the double vector meson production in $γγ$ interactions at hadronic colliders. We present predictions for the different rapidity ranges probed by the ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb Collaborations. Our results demonstrate that the $ρρ$ and $J/ΨJ/Ψ$ production in $PbPb$ collisions is dominated by the double scattering mechanism, while the two - photon mechanism dominates in $pp$ collisions. Moreover, our results indicate that the analysis of the $ρJ/Ψ$ production at LHC can be useful to constrain the double scattering mechanism.

Exclusive processes with a leading neutron in $ep$ collisions

In this paper we extend the color dipole formalism to the study of exclusive processes associated with a leading neutron in $ep$ collisions at high energies. The exclusive $ρ$, $ϕ$ and $J/Ψ$ production, as well as the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering, are analysed assuming a diffractive interaction between the color dipole and the pion emitted by the incident proton. We compare our predictions with the HERA data on $ρ$ production and estimate the magnitude of the absorption corrections. We show that the color dipole formalism is able to describe the current data. Finally, we present our estimate for the exclusive cross sections which can be studied at HERA and in future electron-proton colliders.

Exclusive vector meson photoproduction at the LHC and the FCC: A closer look on the final state

Over the past years the LHC experiments have reported experimental evidences for processes associated to photon-photon and photon-hadron interactions, showing their potential to investigate the production of low- and high-mass systems in exclusive events. In the particular case of the photoproduction of vector mesons, the experimental study of this final state is expected to shed light on the description of the QCD dynamics at small values of the Bjorken-$x$ variable. In this paper we extend previous studies for the exclusive $J/Ψ$ and $Υ$ photoproduction in $pp$ collisions based on the nonlinear QCD dynamics by performing a detailed study of the final state distributions that can be measured experimentally at the LHC and at the Future Circular Collider. Predictions for the rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of the vector mesons and of final-state dimuons are presented for $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 7, 13, and 100 TeV.

Exclusive vector meson production with a leading neutron in photon - hadron interactions at hadronic colliders

In this paper we study leading neutron production in photon - hadron interactions which take place in $pp$ and $pA$ collisions at large impact parameters. Using a model that describes the recent leading neutron data at HERA, we consider exclusive vector meson production in association with a leading neutron in $pp/pA$ collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. The total cross sections and rapidity distributions of $ρ$, $ϕ$ and $J/Ψ$ produced together with a leading neutron are computed. Our results indicate that the study of these processes is feasible and that it can be used to improve the understanding of leading neutron processes and of exclusive vector meson production.

On the rapidity dependence of the average transverse momentum in hadronic collisions

The energy and rapidity dependence of the average transverse momentum $\langle p_T \rangle$ in $pp$ and $pA$ collisions at RHIC and LHC energies are estimated using the Colour Glass Condensate (CGC) formalism. We update previous predictions for the $p_T$ - spectra using the hybrid formalism of the CGC approach and two phenomenological models for the dipole - target scattering amplitude. We demonstrate that these models are able to describe the RHIC and LHC data for the hadron production in $pp$, $dAu$ and $pPb$ collisions at $p_T \le 20$ GeV. Moreover, we present our predictions for $\langle p_T \rangle$ and demonstrate that the ratio $\langle p_{T}(y)\rangle / \langle p_{T}(y = 0)\rangle$ decreases with the rapidity and has a behaviour similar to that predicted by hydrodynamical calculations.

Phenomenological implications of the intrinsic charm in the $Z$ boson production at the LHC

In this paper we study the $Z$, $Z+$ jet, $Z+c$ and $Z+c+$ jet production in $pp$ collisions at the LHC considering different models for an intrinsic charm content of the proton. We analyse the impact of the intrinsic charm in the rapidity and transverse momentum distributions for these different processes. Our results indicated that differently from the other processes, the $Z+c$ cross section is strongly affected by the presence of the intrinsic charm. Moreover, we propose the analysis of the ratios $R(Z+c/Z) \equiv σ(Z+c)/σ(Z)$ and $R(Z+c/Z+\mbox{jet}) \equiv σ(Z+c)/σ(Z+\mbox{jet})$ and demonstrate that these observables can be used as a probe of the intrinsic charm.

Probing the gluon density of the proton in the exclusive photoproduction of vector mesons at the LHC: A phenomenological analysis

The current uncertainty on the gluon density extracted from the global parton analysis is large in the kinematical range of small values of the Bjorken - $x$ variable and low values of the hard scale $Q^2$. An alternative to reduces this uncertainty is the analysis of the exclusive vector meson photoproduction in photon - hadron and hadron - hadron collisions. This process offers a unique opportunity to constrain the gluon density of the proton, since its cross section is proportional to the gluon density squared. In this paper we consider current parametrizations for the gluon distribution and estimate the exclusive vector meson photoproduction cross section at HERA and LHC using the leading logarithmic formalism. We perform a fit of the normalization of the $γh$ cross section and the value of the hard scale for the process and demonstrate that the current LHCb experimental data are better described by models that assume a slow increasing of the gluon distribution at small - $x$ and low $Q^2$.

Production of exotic charmonium in $γγ$ interactions at hadronic colliders

In this paper we investigate the Exotic Charmonium (EC) production in $γγ$ interactions present in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies as well as for the proposed energies of the Future Circular Collider (FCC). Our results demonstrate that the experimental study of these processes is feasible and can be used to constrain the theoretical decay widths and shed some light on the configuration of the considered multiquark states.

Testing the running coupling $k_{T}$-factorization formula for the inclusive gluon production

The inclusive gluon production at midrapidities is described in the Color Glass Condensate formalism using the $k_T$ - factorization formula, which was derived at fixed coupling constant considering the scattering of a dilute system of partons with a dense one. Recent analysis demonstrated that this approach provides a satisfactory description of the experimental data for the inclusive hadron production in $pp/pA/AA$ collisions. However, these studies are based on the fixed coupling $k_T$ - factorization formula, which does not take into account the running coupling corrections, which are important to set the scales present in the cross section. In this paper we consider the running coupling corrected $k_T$ - factorization formula conjectured some years ago and investigate the impact of the running coupling corrections on the observables. In particular, the pseudorapidity distributions and charged hadrons multiplicity are calculated considering $pp$, $dAu/pPb$ and $AuAu/PbPb$ collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. We compare the corrected running coupling predictions with those obtained using the original $k_T$ - factorization assuming a fixed coupling or a prescription for the inclusion of the running of the coupling. Considering the Kharzeev - Levin - Nardi unintegrated gluon distribution and a simplified model for the nuclear geometry, we demonstrate that the distinct predictions are similar for the pseudorapidity distributions in $pp/pA/AA$ collisions and for the charged hadrons multiplicity in $pp/pA$ collisions. On the other hand, the running coupling corrected $k_T$ - factorization formula predicts a smoother energy dependence for $dN/dη$ in $AA$ collisions.

$η_c$ production in photon - induced interactions at the AFTER@LHC experiment as a probe of the Odderon

One of the open questions of the strong interaction theory is the existence of the Odderon, which is an unambiguous prediction of Quantum Chromodynamics, but still not confirmed experimentally. An alternative to probe the Odderon is the exclusive $η_c$ photoproduction in hadronic collisions. As the Pomeron exchange cannot contribute to this process, its observation would indicate the existence of the Odderon. In this paper we estimate the $η_c$ production in photon - induced interactions in hadronic collisions at the AFTER@LHC experiment. We demonstrate that the experimental analysis of this process is feasible in the AFTER@LHC experiment and that the observation of the $η_c$ production in nuclear collisions is a unambiguous signature of the Odderon.

Constraining the photon flux in two-photon processes at the LHC

In this paper we propose the study of the $W^+W^-$ and $μ^+μ^-$ production by two-photon interactions in $pp$ collisions at LHC energies to constrain the photon flux associated to an ultrarelativistic proton. We consider the current parametrizations for the photon distribution of the proton and estimate the effective photon - photon luminosities for elastic, semielastic and inelastic processes. Moreover, we present predictions for the rapidity and invariant mass distributions for the two-photon production of $W^+W^-$ and $μ^+μ^-$ in $γγ$ interactions at LHC energies. We demonstrate that the semielastic and inelastic predictions are strongly dependent on the description of the inelastic photon flux, and that the relative contribution of the different processes depends on the invariant mass of the final state. Our results implies that a dedicated experimental analysis of the two-photon production of $W^+W^-$ and $μ^+μ^-$ with the tagging of one of the protons in the final state can be useful to constrain the magnitude of the inelastic component of the photon distribution.

Deeply virtual Compton scattering at small-$x$ in future Electron - Ion Colliders

The study of exclusive processes in the future electron-ion ($eA$) colliders will be an important tool to investigate the QCD dynamics at high energies as they are in general driven by the gluon content of the target which is strongly subject to parton saturation effects. In this paper we compute the coherent and incoherent cross sections for the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) process relying on the color dipole approach and considering different models for the dipole - proton scattering amplitude. The dependencies of the cross sections with the energy, photon virtuality, nuclear mass number and squared momentum transfer are analysed in detail. We demonstrate that the ratio between the incoherent and coherent cross sections decreases at smaller values of $Q^2$ and increases at smaller values of $A$. We show that the coherent cross section dominates at small $t$ and exhibits the typical diffractive pattern, with the number of dips in the range $|t| \le 0.3$ GeV$^2$ increasing with the mass atomic number. Our results indicate that the position of the dips are independent of the model used to treat the dipole - proton interaction as well as of the center-of-mass energy.

Double $J/ψ$ production in central diffractive processes at the LHC

In this paper we study the double $J/ψ$ production in central diffractive processes considering the Resolved Pomeron model. Based on the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism for the quarkonium production mechanism we estimate the rapidity and transverse momentum dependence of the cross section for the double $J/ψ$ production in diffractive processes at LHC energies. The contributions of the color-singlet and color-octet channels are estimated and predictions for the total cross sections in the kinematical regions of the LHC experiments are also presented. Our results demonstrate that the contribution of central diffractive processes is not negligible and that its study can be useful to test the Resolved Pomeron model.

Double vector meson production in $γγ$ interactions at hadronic colliders

In this paper we revisit the double vector meson production in $γγ$ interactions at heavy ion collisions and present, by the first time, predictions for the $ρρ$ and $J/ΨJ/Ψ$ production in proton -- nucleus and proton -- proton collisions. In order to obtain realistic predictions for rapidity distributions and total cross sections for the double vector production in ultra peripheral hadronic collisions we take into account of the description of $γγ\rightarrow VV$ cross section at low energies as well as its behaviour at large energies, associated to the gluonic interaction between the color dipoles. Our results demonstrate that the double $ρ$ production is dominated by the low energy behaviour of the $γγ\rightarrow VV$ cross section. In contrast, for the double $J/Ψ$ production, the contribution associated to the description of the QCD dynamics at high energies contributes significantly, mainly in $pp$ collisions. Predictions for the RHIC, LHC, FCC and CEPC - SPPC energies are shown.

Investigating the effects of the QCD dynamics in the neutrino absorption by the Earth's interior at ultrahigh energies

The opacity of the Earth to incident ultra high energy neutrinos is directly connected with the behaviour of the neutrino - nucleon ($σ^{νN}$) cross sections in a kinematic range utterly unexplored. In this work we investigate how the uncertainties in $σ^{νN}$ due the different QCD dynamic models modify the neutrino absorption while they travel across the Earth. In particular, we compare the predictions of two extreme scenarios for the high energy behaviour of the cross section, which are consistent with the current experimental data. The first scenario considered is based on the solution of the linear DGLAP equations at small-$x$ and large-$Q^2$, while the second one take into account the unitarity effects in the neutrino - nucleon cross section by the imposition of the Froissart bound behaviour in the nucleon structure functions at large energies. Our results indicate that probability of absorption and the angular distribution of neutrino events are sensitive to the the QCD dynamics at ultra high energies.

Probing the dilaton in central exclusive processes at the LHC

The existence of a dilaton as a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson in spontaneous breaking of scale symmetry is predicted in beyond standard model theories in which electroweak symmetry is broken via strongly coupled conformal dynamics. Such a particle is expected to have a mass below the conformal symmetry breaking scale $f$ and couplings to standard model particles similar to those of the SM Higgs boson. In this paper we estimate, for the first time, the dilaton production in exclusive processes considering Pomeron - Pomeron ($\pom \pom$) and photon - photon ($γγ$) interactions, which are characterized by two rapidity gaps and intact hadrons in the final state. Our results indicate that if the dilaton is massive ($M_χ \ge 2 M_W$), the study of dilaton production by $\pom \pom$ interactions in $pp$ collisions can be useful to determine its mass and the conformal energy scale.

Probing the photon flux in the diffractive quarkonium photoproduction at LHC

In this paper we propose the study of the diffractive quarkonium photoproduction in $pp$ collisions at LHC energies to probe the photon flux associated to a ultrarelativistic proton. The total photon distribution is expected to be given in terms of the elastic and inelastic components. Distinctly from the elastic photon component which can be determined from the elastic form factors, the magnitude of the inelastic component still is an open question. We consider the current parametrizations for the photon distribution of a proton and estimate the rapidity distributions and total cross sections for the production of $J/Ψ$, $Ψ^{\prime}$ and $Υ$ at LHC energies. We demonstrate that the predictions associated to the inelastic contribution are of the same order than those associated to the elastic one. Our results implies that a dedicated experimental analysis of diffractive quarkonium photoproduction with the tagging of the two protons in the final state can be useful to constrain the magnitude of the inelastic component of the photon distribution.

Estimating non-linear QCD effects in ultrahigh energy neutrino events at IceCube

The number of ultrahigh energy events at IceCube is estimated, for the first time, taking into account non-linear QCD effects in the neutrino - hadron cross section. We assume that the extragalactic neutrino flux is given by $Φ_ν(E_ν)=Φ_{0}E^{-2}_ν$ and estimate the neutrino - hadron cross section using the dipole approach and a phenomenological model for the dipole - hadron cross section based on non-linear QCD dynamics. We demonstrate that the non-linear prediction is able to describe the current IceCube data and that the magnitude of the non-linear effects is larger than 20 % for visible energies of order of 2 PeV and increases with the neutrino energy. Our main conclusion is that the non-linear QCD effects are non-negligible and should be taken into account in the analysis of the number of ultrahigh energy events.

Heavy Quark Production in Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray Interactions

In this paper we present a comprehensive study of the heavy quark production in ultra high energy cosmic ray interactions in the atmosphere considering that the primary cosmic ray can be either a photon, neutrino or a proton. The analysis is performed using a unified framework -- the dipole formalism --- and the saturation effects, associated to the physical process of parton recombination, are taken into account. We demonstrate that the contribution of heavy quarks for cosmic ray interactions is in general non-negligible and can be dominant depending of the process considered. Moreover, our results indicate that new dynamical mechanisms should be included in order to obtain reliable predictions for the heavy quark production in $pp$ collisions at ultra high cosmic ray energies.

Inclusive gauge boson production in the color dipole formalism

The inclusive production of the gauge bosons $W^{\pm}$ and $Z^0$ is studied within the color dipole formalism. Gluon saturation effects associated to non-linear corrections to the QCD dynamics, which are expected to contribute at high energies, are naturally included in such formalism. We estimate the contribution of these effects at LHC energies and compare our results with the next-to-next-to-leading order collinear predictions. A comparison with the current experimental data is performed and predictions for higher energies are presented.

Probing gluon number fluctuation effects in future electron-hadron colliders

The description of the QCD dynamics in the kinematical range which will be probed in the future electron - hadron colliders is still an open question. Although phenomenological studies indicate that the gluon number fluctuations, which are related to discreteness in the QCD evolution, are negligible at HERA, the magnitude of these effects for the next generation of colliders still should be estimated. In this paper we investigate inclusive and diffractive $ep$ observables considering a model for the physical scattering amplitude which describes the HERA data. Moreover, we estimate, for the first time, the contribution of the fluctuation effects for the nuclear structure functions. Our results indicate that the study of these observables in the future colliders can be useful to constrain the presence of gluon number fluctuations.

Diffractive photon production at high momentum transfer in $ep$ collisions

The diffractive photon production at large momentum transfer and large energies is a probe of the parton dynamics of the diffractive exchange. In this paper we revisit the leading order (LO) BFKL equation approach for this process and estimate, for the first time, the differential and total cross sections considering the next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections for the BFKL characteristic function. We obtain a reasonable agreement with the DESY HERA data.

Heavy quark production and gluon saturation in double parton scattering at LHC

The production of $c\bar{c}c\bar{c}$, $b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$ and $c\bar{c}b\bar{b}$ pairs considering double parton scattering at LHC energies is investigated. We estimate the contribution of saturation effects to the different final states and predict the energy dependence of the cross sections. Moreover, we estimate the ratio between the double and single parton scattering cross sections for the full rapidity range of the LHC and for the rapidity range of the LHCb experiment. For the full rapidity range we confirm a previous prediction, namely that for charm production the double parton scattering contribution becomes comparable with the single parton scattering one at LHC energies. We also demonstrate that this result remains valid when one introduces saturation effects in the calculations. Finally we show that the production of $c\bar{c}b\bar{b}$ contributes significantly to bottom production. For the LHCb kinematical range the ratio is strongly reduced.

High density effects in ultrahigh neutrino interactions

The high parton density present at high energies and large nuclei is expected to modify the lepton - hadron cross section and the associated observables. In this paper we analyse the impact of the high density effects in the average inelasticity and the neutrino - nucleus cross section at ultra high energies. We compare the predictions associated to the linear DGLAP dynamics with those from the Color Glass Condensate formalism, which includes non-linear effects. Our results demonstrated that the non-linear effects reduce the average inelasticity and that the predictions of the distinct approaches for the neutrino - nucleus cross section at ultra-high energies are similar.

In particular, we have applied the meson cloud model to calculate the asymmetries in D^-/D^+ meson production in high energy p-p collisions and find a good agreement with recent LHCb data. Although small, this non-vanishing asymmetry may shed light on the role played by the charm meson cloud of the proton.

Probing the Color Glass Condensate in $pp$ collisions at forward rapidities and very low transverse momenta

The description of the hadron production at very forward rapidities and low transverse momentum is usually made using phenomenological models based on nonperturbative physics. However, at high energies and large rapidities the wave function of one of the projectiles is probed at very small Bjorken $x$, being characterized by a large number of gluons. In this kinematical regime, a new state of matter - the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) - is expected to be formed. One the main characteristics of such system is the presence of a new dynamical momentum scale, the saturation scale $Q_s$, which can assume values very larger than the QCD confinement scale $Λ_{QCD}$ and give the scale of the running coupling constant. In this paper we assume that in particular kinematical region probed by LHC forward (LHCf) experiment the saturation scale can be considered the hard momentum scale present in the process and calculate the forward neutral pion production at very low-$p_T$ using a perturbative approach. We demonstrate that the CGC formalism is able to successfully describe the LHCf data, which can be considered as a compelling indication of the presence of non-linear QCD effects at LHC energies.

Single and double diffractive prompt photon production at the LHC

In this contribution we study for the first time the prompt photon production in single and double diffractive processes considering the resolved Pomeron model. We estimate the rapidity and transverse momentum dependence of the cross section for the production of two photons and of a photon and a jet. We show that these processes are sensitive to the pomeron structure. In contrast with the dijet and heavy quark production, which are dominated by gluon-gluon interactions, in prompt photon production, Compton like processes are dominant for single photon plus jet events. This gives a unique oportunity to constrain the quark distribution in the Pomeron. The results are obtained for the LHC energy.

Effects of gluon number fluctuations on photon - photon collisions at high energies

We investigate the effects of gluon number fluctuations on the total $γγ$, $γ^*γ^*$ cross sections and the photon structure function $F_2^γ(x,Q^2)$. Considering a model which relates the dipole-dipole and dipole-hadron scattering amplitudes, we estimate these observables by using event-by-event and physical amplitudes. We demonstrate that both analyses are able to describe the LEP data, but predict different behaviours for the observables at high energies, with the gluon fluctuations effects decreasing the cross sections. We conclude that the study of $γγ$ interactions can be useful to constrain the QCD dynamics.

Nuclear shadowing in deep inelastic scattering on nuclei: a closer look

The measurement of the nuclear structure function $F_2^A (x,Q^2)$ at the future electron-ion collider (EIC) will be of great relevance to understand the origin of the nuclear shadowing and to probe gluon saturation effects. Currently there are several phenomenological models, based on very distinct approaches, which describe the scarce experimental data quite successfully. One of main uncertainties comes from the schemes used to include the effects associated to the multiple scatterings and to unitarize the cross section. In this paper we compare the predictions of three different unitarization schemes of the nuclear structure function which use the same theoretical input to describe the projectile-nucleon interaction. In particular, we consider as input the predictions of the Color Glass Condensate formalism, which reproduce the inclusive and diffractive $ep$ HERA data. Our results suggest that the experimental analysis of $F_2^A$ will be able to discriminate between the unitarization schemes.

Probing the Odderon in coherent hadron - hadron interactions at CERN LHC

One of the open questions of the strong interaction theory is the existence of the Odderon, which is an unambiguous prediction of Quantum Chromodynamics, but still not confirmed in the experiment. In this paper we propose the study of the diffractive $η_c$ photoproduction in coherent interactions as a new alternative to probe the Odderon in $pp$ and $PbPb$ collisions at CERN - LHC. As the Pomeron exchange cannot contribute to this process, its observation would indicate the existence of the Odderon. We predict total cross sections of order of $pb \, (μb)$ for $pp \, (PbPb)$ collisions and large values for the event rates/year, which makes, in principle, the experimental analysis of this process feasible at LHC.

Gluons and the quark sea at high energies: distributions, polarization, tomography

This report is based on a ten-week program on "Gluons and the quark sea at high-energies", which took place at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Seattle in Fall 2010. The principal aim of the program was to develop and sharpen the science case for an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a facility that will be able to collide electrons and positrons with polarized protons and with light to heavy nuclei at high energies, offering unprecedented possibilities for in-depth studies of quantum chromodynamics. This report is organized around four major themes: i) the spin and flavor structure of the proton, ii) three-dimensional structure of nucleons and nuclei in momentum and configuration space, iii) QCD matter in nuclei, and iv) Electroweak physics and the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. Beginning with an executive summary, the report contains tables of key measurements, chapter overviews for each of the major scientific themes, and detailed individual contributions on various aspects of the scientific opportunities presented by an EIC.

Non-linear QCD dynamics in two-photon interactions at high energies

Perturbative QCD predicts that the growth of the gluon density at high energies should saturate, forming a Color Glass Condensate (CGC), which is described in mean field approximation by the Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) equation. In this paper we study the $γγ$ interactions at high energies and estimate the main observables which will be probed at future linear colliders using the color dipole picture. We discuss in detail the dipole - dipole cross section and propose a new relation between this quantity and the dipole scattering amplitude. The total $γγ$, $γ^{*} γ^{*}$ cross-sections and the real photon structure function $F_2^γ(x,Q^2)$ are calculated using the recent solution of the BK equation with running coupling constant and the predictions are compared with those obtained using phenomenological models for the dipole-dipole cross section and scattering amplitude. We demonstrate that these models are able to describe the LEP data at high energies, but predict a very different behavior for the observables at higher energies. Therefore we conclude that the study of $γγ$ interactions can be useful to constrain the QCD dynamics.

A comparative study of the neutrino-nucleon cross section at ultra high energies

The high energy neutrino cross section is a crucial ingredient in the calculation of the event rate in high energy neutrino telescopes. Currently there are several approaches which predict different behaviours for its magnitude for ultrahigh energies. In this paper we present a comparison between the predictions based on linear DGLAP dynamics, non-linear QCD and in the imposition of a Froissart-like behaviour at high energies. In particular, we update the predictions based on the Color Glass Condensate, presenting for the first time the results for $σ_{νN}$ using the solution of the running coupling Balitsky-Kovchegov equation. Diffractive deep inelastic scattering in an AdS/CFT inspired model: A phenomenological study

The analytical treatment of the nonperturbative QCD dynamics is one of main open questions of the strong interactions. Currently, it is only possible to get some qualitative information about this regime considering other QCD-like theories, as for example the N=4 super Yang-Mills (SYM), where one can perform calculations in the nonperturbative limit of large 't Hooft coupling using the Anti-de Sitter space/Conformal field theory (AdS/CFT). Recently, the high energy scattering amplitude was calculated in the AdS/CFT approach, applied to deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and confronted with the $F_2$ HERA data. In this work we extend the nonperturbative AdS/CFT inspired model for diffractive processes and compare its predictions with a perturbative approach based on the Balitsky - Kovchegov (BK) equation. We demonstrate that the AdS/CFT inspired model is not able to describe the current $F_2^{D(3)}$ HERA data and predicts a similar behavior to that from BK equation in the range $10^{-7} \lesssim x_{IP} \lesssim 10^{-4}$. At smaller values of $x_{IP}$ the diffractive structure function is predicted to be energy independent.

In this paper we compute the cross sections for the exclusive vector meson production as well as the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) relying on the color dipole approach and considering the numerical solution of the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation including running coupling corrections (rcBK). The production cross sections obtained with the rcBK solution and bCGC parametrization are very similar, the former being slightly larger.

Heavy quark production in deep inelastic electron-nucleus scattering

Heavy quark production has been very well studied over the last years both theoretically and experimentally. Theory has been used to study heavy quark production in $e p$ collisions at HERA, in $pp$ collisions at Tevatron and at RHIC, in $pA$ and $dA$ collisions at RHIC and in $AA$ collisions at CERN-SPS and at RHIC. However, to the best of our knowledge, heavy quark production in $eA$ has received almost no attention. With the possible construction of a high energy electron-ion collider, updated estimates of heavy quark production are needed. We address the subject from the perspective of saturation physics and compute the heavy quark production cross section with the dipole model. We isolate shadowing and non-linear effects, showing their impact on the charm structure function and on the transverse momentum spectrum.

Looking for intrinsic charm in the forward region at BNL RHIC and CERN LHC

The complete understanding of the basic constituents of hadrons and the hadronic dynamics at high energies are two of the main challenges for the theory of strong interactions. In particular, the existence of intrinsic heavy quark components in the hadron wave function must be confirmed (or disproved). In this paper we propose a new mechanism for the production of $D$-mesons at forward rapidities based on the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) formalism and demonstrate that the resulting transverse momentum spectra are strongly dependent on the behavior of the charm distribution at large Bjorken $x$. Our results show clearly that the hypothesis of intrinsic charm can be tested in $pp$ and $p(d) A$ collisions at RHIC and LHC.

Diffractive photoproduction of Z^0 bosons in coherent interactions at CERN-LHC

The exclusive $Z^0$ photoproduction at high energies in $γp (A)$, $p p$ and $AA$ collisions is investigate within the color dipole formalism. We generalize the description of the deeply virtual compton scattering (DVCS) process, which describe quite well the HERA data, for the production of $Z^0$ bosons and estimate the total cross section for the exclusive process $γ^* h\to Z^0 h$ ($h=p,A$) for different energies, photon virtualities and atomic numbers. As hadrons at collider energies are a source of Weizsäcker - Williams photons, we consider electromagnetic interactions in hadron-hadron collisions at Tevatron and LHC energies and estimate the rapidity distribution and total cross section for $Z^0$ production in the $h h\to h Z^0 h$ process. This is the first estimation for such a process in literature. It can allow us to study, for instance, the physics of hadronic $Z^0$ decays in a clean environment characterized by two rapidity gaps. Our results indicate that the experimental analyzes of this process could be feasible in $pp$ but the physics scenario for $AA$ collisions is not promising.

Testing Non-linear Evolution with Running Coupling Corrections in $ep$ and $pp$ collisions

The perturbative QCD predicts that the growth of the gluon density at small-$x$ (high energies) should saturate, forming a Color Glass Condensate (CGC), which is described in mean field approximation by the Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) equation. Recently, the next-to-leading order corrections for the BK equation were derived and a global fit of the inclusive $ep$ HERA data was performed, resulting in a parameterization for the forward scattering amplitude. In this paper we compare this parameterization with the predictions of other phenomenological models and investigate the saturation physics in diffractive deep inelastic electron-proton scattering and in the forward hadron production in $pp$ collisions. Our results demonstrate that the running coupling BK solution is able to describe these observables.

In this paper we show that if a saturation window exists between the nonperturbative and perturbative regimes of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the total cross sections satisfy the Froissart bound. Furthermore, we show that our approach allows us to describe the high energy experimental data on $pp/p\bar{p}$ total cross sections.

Saturation Physics in Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays: Heavy Quark Production

In this work we estimate the heavy quark production in the interaction of ultra high energy cosmic rays in the atmosphere, considering that the primary cosmic ray is a proton or a photon. At these energies the saturation momentum Q_{sat}^2 stays above the hard scale μ_c^2=4m_c^2, implying charm production probing the saturation regime. In particular, we show that the ep HERA data presents a scaling on τ_c = (Q^2+μ_c^2)/Q_{sat}^2. We derive our results considering the dipole picture and the Color Glass Condensate formalism, which one shows to be able to describe the heavy quark production in photon-proton and proton-proton collisions. In this work we compare the predictions of distinct QCD models with the recent experimental results for $F_L(x,Q^2)$ at small $x$ and low $Q^2$ obtained by the H1 collaboration. Geometric Scaling in Inclusive Charm Production

We calculate the cross section for this process considering the solution of the LLA BFKL equation at zero momentum transfer using a small-t approximation for the differential cross section of the subprocess. The High Density Effects in Heavy Quark Production at pA Colliders

In this paper we investigate the role of the high density effects in the heavy quark production cross section in $pA$ processes at RHIC and LHC. We use, as initial condition, a gluon distribution consistent with fixed target nuclear data and the Glauber-Mueller approach to describe the high density effects. We show that this process can be used as a probe of the presence of the high density effects. Moreover, we include these effects in the calculation of the heavy quark production in $AA$ collisions, verifying that they cannot be disregarded both in the estimates of quarkonium suppression and in the initial conditions of the quark-gluon plasma.
