Constraints on the $K^0_{\mathrm{S}}\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-}$ branching fraction

A search for the decay $K^0_{\mathrm{S}}\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-}$ is performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.6\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ and collected with the LHCb experiment during 2016, 2017 and 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of $13\,\mathrm{TeV}$. The observed signal yield is consistent with zero, yielding an upper limit of ${\cal B}(K^0_{\mathrm{S}}\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-}) < 2.2 \times 10^{-10}$ at 90% CL. The limit reduces to ${\cal B}(K^0_{\mathrm{S}}\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-}) < 2.1 \times 10^{-10}$ at 90% CL once combined with the result from data taken in 2011 and 2012.

Amplitude analysis of the $B^+ \rightarrow π^+π^+π^-$ decay

The results of an amplitude analysis of the charmless three-body decay $B^+ \rightarrow π^+π^+π^-$, in which $C\!P$-violation effects are taken into account, are reported. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3 \text{fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions recorded with the LHCb detector. The most challenging aspect of the analysis is the description of the behaviour of the $π^+ π^-$ S-wave contribution, which is achieved by using three complementary approaches based on the isobar model, the K-matrix formalism, and a quasi-model-independent procedure. Additional resonant contributions for all three methods are described using a common isobar model, and include the $ρ(770)^0$, $ω(782)$ and $ρ(1450)^0$ resonances in the $π^+π^-$ P-wave, the $f_2(1270)$ resonance in the $π^+π^-$ D-wave, and the $ρ_3(1690)^0$ resonance in the $π^+π^-$ F-wave. Significant $C\!P$-violation effects are observed in both S- and D-waves, as well as in the interference between the S- and P-waves. The results from all three approaches agree and provide new insight into the dynamics and the origin of $C\!P$-violation effects in $B^+ \rightarrow π^+π^+π^-$ decays.

Determination of quantum numbers for several excited charmed mesons observed in $B^- \to D^{*+} π^- π^-$ decays

A four-body amplitude analysis of the $B^- \to D^{*+} π^- π^-$ decay is performed, where fractions and relative phases of the various resonances contributing to the decay are measured. Several quasi-model-independent analyses are performed aimed at searching for the presence of new states and establishing the quantum numbers of previously observed charmed meson resonances. In particular the resonance parameters and quantum numbers are determined for the $D_1(2420)$, $D_1(2430)$, $D_0(2550)$, $D^*_1(2600)$, $D_2(2740)$ and $D^*_3(2750)$ states. The mixing between the $D_1(2420)$ and $D_1(2430)$ resonances is studied and the mixing parameters are measured. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 $fb^{-1}$, collected in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV with the LHCb detector.

First observation of excited $Ω_b^-$ states

We report four narrow peaks in the $Ξ_b^0K^-$ mass spectrum obtained using $pp$ collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$ recorded by the LHCb experiment. Referring to these states by their mass, the mass values are \begin{align*} m(Ω_b(6316)^-) &= 6315.64\pm0.31\pm0.07\pm0.50 {\rm MeV}, \\ m(Ω_b(6330)^-) &= 6330.30\pm0.28\pm0.07\pm0.50 {\rm MeV}, \\ m(Ω_b(6340)^-) &= 6339.71\pm0.26\pm0.05\pm0.50 {\rm MeV}, \\ m(Ω_b(6350)^-) &= 6349.88\pm0.35\pm0.05\pm0.50 {\rm MeV}, \end{align*}where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and the last is due to the knowledge of the $Ξ_b^0$ mass. The natural widths of the three lower mass states are consistent with zero, and the 90% confidence-level upper limits are determined to be ${Γ(Ω_b(6316)^-)<2.8}$ MeV, ${Γ(Ω_b(6330)^-)<3.1}$ MeV and ${Γ(Ω_b(6340)^-)<1.5}$ MeV. The natural width of the $Ω_b(6350)^-$ peak is $1.4^{+1.0}_{-0.8}\pm0.1$ MeV, which is 2.5$σ$ from zero and corresponds to an upper limit of 2.8 MeV. The peaks have local significances ranging from 3.6$σ$ to 7.2$σ$. After accounting for the look-elsewhere effect, the significances of the $Ω_b(6316)^-$ and $Ω_b(6330)^-$ peaks are reduced to 2.1$σ$ and 2.6$σ$ respectively, while the two higher mass peaks exceed 5$σ$. The observed peaks are consistent with expectations for excited $Ω_b^-$ resonances.

Isospin amplitudes in $Λ_b^0\to J/ψΛ(Σ^0)$ and $Ξ_b^0\to J/ψΞ^0(Λ)$ decays

Ratios of isospin amplitudes in hadron decays are a useful probe of the interplay between weak and strong interactions, and allow searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. We present the first results on isospin amplitudes in $b$-baryon decays, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.5 fb$^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector in $pp$ collisions at center of mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The isospin amplitude ratio $|A_1(Λ_b^0\to J/ψΣ^0)/A_0(Λ_b^0\to J/ψΛ)|$, where the subscript on $A$ indicates the final-state isospin, is measured to be less than 1/21.8 at 95\% confidence level. The Cabibbo suppressed $Ξ_b^0\to J/ψΛ$ decay is observed for the first time, allowing for the measurement $|A_0(Ξ_b^0\to J/ψΛ)/A_{1/2}(Ξ_b^0\to J/ψΞ^0)| =0.37 \pm 0.06\pm 0.02$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

Measurement of $\mathitΞ_{cc}^{++}$ production in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

The production of $\mathitΞ_{cc}^{++}$ baryons in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV is measured in the transverse-momentum range $4<p_\mathrm{T}<15~\mathrm{GeV}$/$c$ and the rapidity range $2.0<y<4.5$. The data used in this measurement correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$, recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2016. The ratio of the $\mathitΞ_{cc}^{++}$ production cross-section times the branching fraction of the $\mathit{Ξ_{cc}^{++} \to Λ_{c}^{+} K^- π^+ π^+}$ decay relative to the prompt $\mathit{Λ_c^{+}}$ production cross-section is found to be $(2.22\pm 0.27 \pm 0.29)\times 10^{-4}$, assuming the central value of the measured $\mathit{Ξ_{cc}^{++}}$ lifetime, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Measurement of $|V_{cb}|$ with $B_s^0 \to D_s^{(*)-} μ^+ ν_μ$ decays

The element $|V_{cb}|$ of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix is measured using semileptonic $B_s^0$ decays produced in proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$. Rates of $B_s^0 \to D_s^{-} μ^+ ν_μ$ and $B_s^0 \to D_s^{*-} μ^+ ν_μ$ decays are analyzed using hadronic form-factor parametrizations derived either by Caprini, Lellouch and Neubert (CLN) or by Boyd, Grinstein and Lebed (BGL). The measured values of $|V_{cb}|$ are ${(41.4 \pm 0.6 \pm 0.9 \pm 1.2)\times 10^{-3}}$ and ${(42.3 \pm 0.8 \pm 0.9 \pm 1.2)\times 10^{-3}}$ in the CLN and BGL parametrization, respectively. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third is due to the external inputs used in the measurement. These results are in agreement with those obtained from decays of $B^+$ and $B^0$ mesons. They are the first determinations of $|V_{cb}|$ at a hadron-collider experiment and the first using $B_s^0$ meson decays.

Measurement of $CP$ violation in $B^0\to D^{*\pm} D^{\mp}$ decays

The decay-time-dependent $CP$ asymmetry in $B^0 \to D^{*\pm}D^{\mp}$ decays is measured using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9$fb$^{-1}$ recorded by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The $CP$ parameters are measured as $ S_{D^*D} = -0.861 \pm 0.077\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.019 \,\text{(syst)}\,, $ $ ΔS_{D^*D} = 0.019 \pm 0.075 \,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.012 \,\text{(syst)} \,, $ $ C_{D^*D} = -0.059 \pm 0.092 \,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.020 \,\text{(syst)} \,, $ $ ΔC_{D^*D} = -0.031 \pm 0.092 \,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.016 \,\text{(syst)} \,, $ $ {\cal A}_{D^*D} = 0.008 \pm 0.014 \,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.006 \,\text{(syst)}\,. $ The analysis provides the most precise single measurement of $CP$ violation in this decay channel to date. All parameters are consistent with their current world average values.

Measurement of $f_s / f_u$ variation with proton-proton collision energy and $B$-meson kinematics

The ratio of the $\mathrm{B}^0_\mathrm{s}$ and $\mathrm{B}^+$ fragmentation fractions $f_\mathrm{s}$ and $f_u$ is studied with $B^0_\mathrm{s}\to\mathrm{J}/ψϕ$ and $B^+\to\mathrm{J}/ψK^+$ decays using data collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at 7, 8 and 13$\text{ TeV}$ center-of-mass energies. The analysis is performed in bins of $\mathrm{B}$-meson momentum, longitudinal momentum, transverse momentum, pseudorapidity and rapidity. The fragmentation-fraction ratio $f_\mathrm{s} / f_u$ is observed to depend on the $\mathrm{B}$-meson transverse momentum with a significance of $6.0\,σ$. This dependency is driven by the 13$\text{ TeV}$ sample ($8.7\,σ$) while the results for the other collision energies are not significant when considered separately. Furthermore the results show a $4.8\,σ$ evidence for an increase of $f_\mathrm{s} / f_u$ as a function of collision energy.

Measurement of CP violation in the $B_s^0\rightarrowϕϕ$ decay and search for the $B^0\rightarrow ϕϕ$ decay

A measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetry in $B_s^0\rightarrowϕϕ$ decays is presented. Using a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.0$fb$^{-1}$ collected by the $\mbox{LHCb}$ experiment at centre-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV in 2011, 8 TeV in 2012 and 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016, a signal yield of around 9000 $B_s^0\rightarrowϕϕ$ decays is obtained. The CP-violating phase $ϕ_s^{s\bar{s}s}$ is measured to be $-0.073 \pm 0.115$(stat)$\pm 0.027$(syst) rad, under the assumption it is independent on the helicity of the $ϕϕ$ decay. In addition, the CP-violating phases of the transverse polarisations under the assumption of CP conservation of the longitudinal phase are measured. The helicity-independent direct CP-violation parameter is also measured, and is found to be $|λ|=0.99 \pm 0.05 $(stat)$ \pm 0.01 $(syst). In addition, $T$-odd triple-product asymmetries are measured. The results obtained are consistent with the hypothesis of CP conservation in $b\rightarrow\bar{s}s\bar{s}$ transitions. Finally, a limit on the branching fraction of the $B^0\rightarrow ϕϕ$ decay is determined to be $\mathcal{B}(B^0\rightarrow ϕϕ)<2.7\times 10^{-8}$ at 90% confidence level.

Measurement of psi(2S) production cross-sections in proton-proton collisions at 7 and 13 TeV

The cross-sections of $ψ(2S)$ meson production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13~\mathrm{TeV}$ are measured with a data sample collected by the LHCb detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $275~p\mathrm{b}^{-1}$. The production cross-sections for prompt $ψ(2S)$ mesons and those for $ψ(2S)$ mesons from $b$-hadron decays ($ψ{(2S)}\mathrm{-from-}b$) are determined as functions of the transverse momentum, $p_{\mathrm{T}}$, and the rapidity, $y$, of the $ψ(2S)$ meson in the kinematic range $2<p_{\mathrm{T}}<20~\mathrm{GeV}/c$ and $2.0<y<4.5$. The production cross-sections integrated over this kinematic region are \begin{equation*} \begin{split} σ(\mbox{prompt }ψ(2S),13~\mathrm{TeV}) &= {1.430 \pm 0.005(\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.099 (\mathrm{syst})μ\mathrm{b}},\\ σ(ψ(2S)\mathrm{-from-}b,13~\mathrm{TeV})&={0.426 \pm 0.002(\mathrm{stat}) \pm0.030 (\mathrm{syst})μ\mathrm{b}}. \end{split} \end{equation*} A new measurement of $ψ(2S)$ production cross-sections in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7~\mathrm{TeV}$ is also performed using data collected in 2011, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $614~{p\mathrm{b}^{-1}}$.The integrated production cross-sections in the kinematic range $3.5<p_{\mathrm{T}}<14~\mathrm{GeV}/c$ and $2.0<y<4.5$ are \begin{equation*} \begin{split} σ(\mbox{prompt }ψ(2S),7~\mathrm{TeV}) &={0.471 \pm0.001 (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.025 (\mathrm{syst})μ\mathrm{b}},\\ σ(ψ(2S)\mathrm{-from-}b,7~\mathrm{TeV}) &={0.126\pm0.001 (\mathrm{stat}) \pm0.008 (\mathrm{syst})μ\mathrm{b}}. \end{split} \end{equation*} All results show reasonable agreement with theoretical calculations.

Measurement of the $η_c(1S)$ production cross-section in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV

Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $2.0\,fb^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment, the production of the $η_c(1S)$ state in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13 \text{ TeV}$ is studied in the rapidity range ${2.0 < y < 4.5}$ and in the transverse momentum range ${6.5 < p_{T} < 14.0\text{ GeV}}$. The cross-section for prompt production of $η_c(1S)$ mesons relative to that of the $J/ψ$ meson is measured using the ${p\bar{p}}$ decay mode and is found to be ${σ_{η_c(1S)}/σ_{J/ψ} = 1.69 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.18}$. The quoted uncertainties are, in order, statistical, systematic and due to uncertainties on the branching fractions of the ${J/ψ\to p \bar{p}}$ and ${η_c\to p \bar{p}}$ decays. The prompt $η_c(1S)$ production cross-section is determined to be ${σ_{η_c(1S)} = 1.26 \pm 0.11\pm 0.08 \pm 0.14 \,μb}$, where the last uncertainty includes that on the ${J/ψ}$ meson cross-section. The ratio of the branching fractions of $b$-hadron decays to the $η_c(1S)$ and ${J/ψ}$ states is measured to be ${\mathcal{B}_{b\toη_c X}/\mathcal{B}_{b\to J/ψX} = 0.48 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.05}$, where the last uncertainty is due to those on the branching fractions of the ${J/ψ\to p \bar{p}}$ and ${η_c\to p \bar{p}}$ decays. The difference between the ${J/ψ}$ and $η_c(1S)$ masses is also determined to be ${113.0 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.1\text{ MeV}}$, which is the most precise single measurement of this quantity to date.

Measurement of the branching fraction of the decay $B_s^0\to K_S^0 K_S^0$

A measurement of the branching fraction of the decay $B_s^0 \to K_S^0 K_S^0$ is performed using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 $fb^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment between 2011 and 2016. The branching fraction is determined to be BR($B_s^0 \to K_S^0 K_S^0$) = [8.3 $\pm$ 1.6 (stat) $\pm$ 0.9 (syst) $\pm$ 0.8 (norm) $\pm$ 0.3 ($f_s/f_d$)] $\times 10^{-6}$ , where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third and fourth are due to uncertainties on the branching fraction of the normalization mode $B^0 \to ϕK_S^0$ and the ratio of hadronization fractions $f_s/f_d$. This is the most precise measurement of this branching fraction to date. Furthermore, a measurement of the branching fraction of the decay $B^0 \to K_S^0 K_S^0$ is performed relative to that of the $B_s^0 \to K_S^0 K_S^0$ channel, and is found to be $\frac{BR(B^0 \to K_S^0 K_S^0)}{BR(B_s^0 \to K_S^0 K_S^0)}$ = [7.5 $\pm$ 3.1 (stat) $\pm$ 0.5 (syst) $\pm$ 0.3 ($f_s/f_d$)] $\times 10^{-2}$.

Observation of new resonances in the $Λ_{b}^0π^+π^-$ system

We report the observation of a new structure in the $Λ_b^0 π^+π^-$ spectrum using the full LHCb data set of $pp$ collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$, collected at $\sqrt{s}=7$, 8 and $13\,\mathrm{TeV}$. A study of the structure suggests its interpretation as a superposition of two almost degenerate narrow states. The masses and widths of these states are measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} m_{Λ_{b}\mathrm{(6146)}^0} &=&6146.17 \pm 0.33 \pm 0.22 \pm 0.16\,\mathrm{MeV} \,, m_{Λ_{b}\mathrm{(6152)}^0} &=&6152.51 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.22 \pm 0.16\,\mathrm{MeV} \,, Γ_{Λ_{b}\mathrm{(6146)}^0}&=&\phantom{615}2.9\phantom{0}\pm 1.3\phantom{0} \pm 0.3\phantom{0}\,\mathrm{MeV}\,, Γ_{Λ_{b}\mathrm{(6152)}^0} &=&\phantom{615}2.1\phantom{0}\pm 0.8\phantom{0} \pm 0.3\phantom{0}\,\mathrm{MeV}\,, \end{eqnarray*} with a mass splitting of $Δm = 6.34 \pm 0.32 \pm 0.02\,\mathrm{MeV}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third derives from the knowledge of the mass of the $Λ_b^0$ baryon. The measured masses and widths of these new excited states suggest their possible interpretation as a doublet of $Λ_{b}\mathrm{(1D)}^0$ states.

Observation of several sources of $CP$ violation in $B^+ \to π^+ π^+ π^-$ decays

Observations are reported of different sources of $CP$ violation from an amplitude analysis of $B^+ \to π^+ π^+ π^-$ decays, based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3 \; {\rm fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions recorded with the LHCb detector. A large $CP$ asymmetry is observed in the decay amplitude involving the tensor $f_2(1270)$ resonance, and in addition significant $CP$ violation is found in the $π^+ π^-$ S-wave at low invariant mass. The presence of $CP$ violation related to interference between the $π^+ π^-$ S-wave and the P-wave $B^+ \to ρ(770)^0 π^+$ amplitude is also established; this causes large local asymmetries but cancels when integrated over the phase space of the decay. The results provide both qualitative and quantitative new insights into $CP$-violation effects in hadronic $B$ decays.

Observation of the semileptonic decay $B^{+}\to p\overline{p}μ^{+}ν_μ$

The Cabibbo-suppressed semileptonic decay $B^{+}\to p\overline{p}μ^{+}ν_μ$ is observed for the first time using a sample of $pp$ collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0, 2.0 and 1.7fb$^{-1}$ at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13TeV, respectively. The differential branching fraction is measured as a function of the $p\overline{p}$ invariant mass using the decay mode $B^{+}\to J/ψK^{+}$ for normalisation. The total branching fraction is measured to be \begin{align*} \mathcal{B}(B^{+}\to p\overline{p}μ^{+}ν_μ) = (5.27 ^{+0.23}_{-0.24} \pm 0.21 \pm 0.15)\times 10^{-6}, \end{align*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is from the uncertainty on the branching fraction of the normalisation channel.

The $Ξ_{cc}^{++}$ candidates are reconstructed via the decay modes $Ξ_{cc}^{++}\toΛ_c^+K^-π^+π^+$ and $Ξ_{cc}^{++}\toΞ_c^+π^+$. The result, $3621.55 \pm 0.23{\rm\,(stat)\,} \pm 0.30 {\rm\,(syst)\,}{\rm MeV}/c^2$, is the most precise measurement of the $Ξ_{cc}^{++}$ mass to date.

Search for $A'\!\to\!μ^+μ^-$ decays

Searches are performed for both prompt-like and long-lived dark photons, $A'$, produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. These searches look for $A'\!\to\!μ^+μ^-$ decays using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.5/fb collected with the LHCb detector. Neither search finds evidence for a signal, and 90% confidence-level exclusion limits are placed on the $γ$-$A'$ kinetic-mixing strength. The prompt-like $A'$ search explores the mass region from near the dimuon threshold up to 70 GeV, and places the most stringent constraints to date on dark photons with $214 < m(A') \lesssim 740$ MeV and $10.6 < m(A') \lesssim 30$ GeV. The search for long-lived $A'\!\to\!μ^+μ^-$ decays places world-leading constraints on low-mass dark photons with lifetimes $\mathcal{O}(1)$ ps.

Search for $C\!P$ violation and observation of $P$ violation in $Λ_b^0 \to p π^- π^+ π^-$ decays

A search for $C\!P$ violation in the $Λ_b^0 \to p π^- π^+ π^-$ decay is performed using LHCb data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.6$\,fb^{-1}$ collected in $pp$ collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13$\,Te\kern -0.1em V$. The analysis uses both triple product asymmetries and the unbinned energy test method. The highest significances of $C\!P$ asymmetry are 2.9 standard deviations from triple product asymmetries and 3.0 standard deviations for the energy test method. Once the global $p$-value is considered, all results are consistent with no $C\!P$ violation. Parity violation is observed at a significance of $5.5$ standard deviations for the triple product asymmetry method and $5.3$ standard deviations for the energy test method.

Study of $Υ$ production in $p$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=8.16$ TeV

The production of $Υ(nS)$ mesons ($n=1,2,3$) in $p$Pb and Pb$p$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=8.16$ TeV is measured by the LHCb experiment, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 31.8 nb$^{-1}$. The $Υ(nS)$ mesons are reconstructed through their decays into two opposite-sign muons. The measurements comprise the differential production cross-sections of the $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ states, their forward-to-backward ratios and nuclear modification factors, performed as a function of the transverse momentum \pt and rapidity in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass frame $y^*$ of the $Υ(nS)$ states, in the kinematic range $p_{\rm{T}}<25$ GeV/$c$ and $1.5<y^*<4.0$ ($-5.0<y^*<-2.5$) for $p$Pb (Pb$p$) collisions. In addition, production cross-sections for $Υ(3S)$ are measured integrated over phase space and the production ratios between all three $Υ(nS)$ states are determined. The measurements are compared to theoretical predictions and suppressions for quarkonium in $p$Pb collisions are observed.

The ratio of branching fractions of the decays $Λ^{0}_{b}\to pK^{-}e^{+}e^{-}$ and $Λ^{0}_{b}\to pK^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-}$, $R^{-1}_{pK}$, is measured for the first time using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 $fb^{-1}$ recorded with the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. In the dilepton mass-squared range $0.1 < q^{2} < 6.0$ $GeV^{2}/c^{4}$ and the $pK^{-}$ mass range $m(pK^{-}) < 2600$ $MeV/c^{2}$, the ratio of branching fractions is measured to be $R^{-1}_{pK} = 1.17 ^{+0.18}_{-0.16} \pm 0.07$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This is the first test of lepton universality with b baryons and the first observation of the decay $Λ^{0}_{b}\to pK^{-}e^{+}e^{-}$.

Updated measurement of decay-time-dependent CP asymmetries in $D^0 \to K^+K^-$ and $D^0 \to π^+π^-$ decays

A search for decay-time-dependent charge-parity ($CP$) asymmetry in $D^0 \to K^+K^-$ and $D^0 \to π^+π^-$ decays is performed at the LHCb experiment using proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4fb$^{-1}$. The $D^0$ mesons are required to originate from semileptonic decays of $b$ hadrons, such that the charge of the muon identifies the flavor of the neutral $D$ meson at production. The asymmetries in the effective decay widths of $D^0$ and $\overline{D}^0$ mesons are determined to be $A_Γ(K^+K^-) = ( -4.3 \pm 3.6 \pm 0.5 )\times 10^{-4}$ and $A_Γ(π^+π^-) = ( 2.2 \pm 7.0 \pm 0.8)\times 10^{-4}$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The results are consistent with $CP$ symmetry and, when combined with previous LHCb results, yield $A_Γ(K^+K^-) = ( -4.4 \pm 2.3 \pm 0.6 )\times 10^{-4}$ and $A_Γ(π^+π^-) = ( 2.5 \pm 4.3 \pm 0.7)\times 10^{-4}$.

Updated measurement of time-dependent $CP$-violating observables in $B^{0}_{s}\to J/ψK^+ K^-$ decays

The decay-time-dependent $CP$ asymmetry in $B^{0}_{s}\to J/ψK^{+} K^{-}$ decays is measured using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.9\,\mathrm{fb^{-1}}$, collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of $13\,\mathrm{TeV}$ in 2015 and 2016. Using a sample of approximately 117\,000 signal decays with an invariant $K^{+} K^{-}$ mass in the vicinity of the $ϕ(1020)$ resonance, the $CP$-violating phase $ϕ_s$ is measured, along with the difference in decay widths of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the $B^{0}_{s}$-$\bar{B}^{0}_{s}$ system, $ΔΓ_s$. The difference of the average $B^{0}_{s}$ and $B^{0}$ meson decay widths, $Γ_s-Γ_d$, is determined using in addition a sample of $B^{0} \to J/ψK^{+} π^{-}$ decays. The values obtained are $ϕ_s = -0.083\pm0.041\pm0.006\,\mathrm{rad}$, $ΔΓ_s = 0.077 \pm 0.008 \pm 0.003\, \mathrm{ps^{-1}}$ and $Γ_s-Γ_d = -0.0041 \pm 0.0024 \pm 0.0015\,\mathrm{ps^{-1}}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise single measurements of these quantities to date and are consistent with expectations based on the Standard Model and with a previous LHCb analysis of this decay using data recorded at centre-of-mass energies 7 and 8 TeV. Finally, the results are combined with recent results from $B^{0}_{s}\to J/ψπ^{+} π^{-}$ decays obtained using the same dataset as this analysis, and with previous independent LHCb results.

A model-independent confirmation of the $Z(4430)^-$ state

The decay $B^0\to ψ(2S) K^+π^-$ is analyzed using $\rm 3~fb^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data collected with the LHCb detector. A model-independent description of the $ψ(2S) π$ mass spectrum is obtained, using as input the $Kπ$ mass spectrum and angular distribution derived directly from data, without requiring a theoretical description of resonance shapes or their interference. The hypothesis that the $ψ(2S)π$ mass spectrum can be described in terms of $Kπ$ reflections alone is rejected with more than 8$σ$ significance. This provides confirmation, in a model-independent way, of the need for an additional resonant component in the mass region of the $Z(4430)^-$ exotic state.

A new algorithm for identifying the flavour of $B_s^0$ mesons at LHCb

A new algorithm for the determination of the initial flavour of $B_s^0$ mesons is presented. The algorithm is based on two neural networks and exploits the $b$ hadron production mechanism at a hadron collider. The first network is trained to select charged kaons produced in association with the $B_s^0$ meson. The second network combines the kaon charges to assign the $B_s^0$ flavour and estimates the probability of a wrong assignment. The algorithm is calibrated using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at 7 and 8 TeV centre-of-mass energies. The calibration is performed in two ways: by resolving the $B_s^0$-$\bar{B}_s^0$ flavour oscillations in $B_s^0 \to D_s^- π^+$ decays, and by analysing flavour-specific $B_{s 2}^{*}(5840)^0 \to B^+ K^-$ decays. The tagging power measured in $B_s^0 \to D_s^- π^+$ decays is found to be $(1.80 \pm 0.19({\rm stat}) \pm 0.18({\rm syst}))$\%, which is an improvement of about 50\% compared to a similar algorithm previously used in the LHCb experiment.

A precise measurement of the $B^0$ meson oscillation frequency

The oscillation frequency, $Δm_d$, of $B^0$ mesons is measured using semileptonic decays with a $D^-$ or $D^{*-}$ meson in the final state, in a data sample of $pp$ collisions collected by the LHCb detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0$\mbox{fb}^{-1}$. A combination of the two decay modes gives $Δm_d = (505.0 \pm 2.1 \pm 1.0) \rm \,ns^{-1}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This is the most precise single measurement of this parameter. It is compatible with the current world average and has similar precision.

Amplitude analysis of $B^{-} \to D^{+} π^{-} π^{-}$ decays

The Dalitz plot analysis technique is used to study the resonant substructures of $B^{-} \to D^{+} π^{-} π^{-}$ decays in a data sample corresponding to 3.0 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. A model-independent analysis of the angular moments demonstrates the presence of resonances with spins 1, 2 and 3 at high $D^{+}π^{-}$ mass. The data are fitted with an amplitude model composed of a quasi-model-independent function to describe the $D^{+}π^{-}$ S-wave together with virtual contributions from the $D^{*}(2007)^{0}$ and $B^{*0}$ states, and components corresponding to the $D^{*}_{2}(2460)^{0}$, $D^{*}_{1}(2680)^{0}$, $D^{*}_{3}(2760)^{0}$ and $D^{*}_{2}(3000)^{0}$ resonances. The masses and widths of these resonances are determined together with the branching fractions for their production in $B^{-} \to D^{+} π^{-} π^{-}$ decays. The $D^{+}π^{-}$ S-wave has phase motion consistent with that expected due to the presence of the $D^{*}_{0}(2400)^{0}$ state. These results constitute the first observations of the $D^{*}_{3}(2760)^{0}$ and $D^{*}_{2}(3000)^{0}$ resonances.

Angular analysis of the $B^{0}\rightarrow K^{*0}μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decay using $3\,\mbox{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity

An angular analysis of the $B^{0}\rightarrow K^{*0}(\rightarrow K^{+}π^{-})μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decay is presented. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $3.0\,{\mbox{fb}^{-1}}$ of $pp$ collision data collected at the LHCb experiment. The complete angular information from the decay is used to determine $C\!P$-averaged observables and $C\!P$ asymmetries, taking account of possible contamination from decays with the $K^{+}π^{-}$ system in an S-wave configuration. The angular observables and their correlations are reported in bins of $q^2$, the invariant mass squared of the dimuon system. The observables are determined both from an unbinned maximum likelihood fit and by using the principal moments of the angular distribution. In addition, by fitting for $q^2$-dependent decay amplitudes in the region $1.1<q^{2}<6.0\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}^{2}/c^{4}$, the zero-crossing points of several angular observables are computed. A global fit is performed to the complete set of $C\!P$-averaged observables obtained from the maximum likelihood fit. This fit indicates differences with predictions based on the Standard Model at the level of 3.4 standard deviations. These differences could be explained by contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model, or by an unexpectedly large hadronic effect that is not accounted for in the Standard Model predictions.

Constraints on the unitarity triangle angle $γ$ from Dalitz plot analysis of $B^0 \to D K^+ π^-$ decays

The first study is presented of CP violation with an amplitude analysis of the Dalitz plot of $B^0 \to D K^+ π^-$ decays, with $D \to K^+ π^-$, $K^+ K^-$ and $π^+ π^-$. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to $3.0\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions collected with the LHCb detector. No significant CP violation effect is seen, and constraints are placed on the angle $γ$ of the unitarity triangle formed from elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix. Hadronic parameters associated with the $B^0 \to D K^*(892)^0$ decay are determined for the first time. These measurements can be used to improve the sensitivity to $γ$ of existing and future studies of the $B^0 \to D K^*(892)^0$ decay.

Differential branching fraction and angular moments analysis of the decay $B^0 \to K^+ π^- μ^+ μ^-$ in the $K^*_{0,2}(1430)^0$ region

Measurements of the differential branching fraction and angular moments of the decay $B^0 \to K^+ π^- μ^+ μ^-$ in the $K^+π^-$ invariant mass range $1330<m(K^+ π^-)<1530~MeV/c^2$ are presented. Proton-proton collision data are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 $fb^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment. Differential branching fraction measurements are reported in five bins of the invariant mass squared of the dimuon system, $q^2$, between 0.1 and 8.0 $GeV^2/c^4$. For the first time, an angular analysis sensitive to the S-, P- and D-wave contributions of this rare decay is performed. The set of 40 normalised angular moments describing the decay is presented for the $q^2$ range 1.1--6.0 $GeV^2/c^4$.

Evidence for exotic hadron contributions to $Λ_b^0 \to J/ψp π^-$ decays

A full amplitude analysis of $Λ_b^0 \to J/ψp π^-$ decays is performed with a data sample acquired with the LHCb detector from 7 and 8 TeV $pp$ collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$. A significantly better description of the data is achieved when, in addition to the previously observed nucleon excitations $N\to pπ^-$, either the $P_c(4380)^+$ and $P_c(4450)^+\to J/ψp$ states, previously observed in $Λ_b^0 \to J/ψp K^-$ decays, or the $Z_c(4200)^-\to J/ψπ^-$ state, previously reported in $B^0 \to J/ψK^+ π^-$ decays, or all three, are included in the amplitude models. The data support a model containing all three exotic states, with a significance of more than three standard deviations. Within uncertainties, the data are consistent with the $P_c(4380)^+$ and $P_c(4450)^+$ production rates expected from their previous observation taking account of Cabibbo suppression.

First observation of $D^0-\bar D^0$ oscillations in $D^0\to K^+π^-π^+π^-$ decays and measurement of the associated coherence parameters

Charm meson oscillations are observed in a time-dependent analysis of the ratio of $D^0\to K^+π^-π^+π^-$ to $D^0\to K^-π^+π^-π^+$ decay rates, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3.0\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ recorded by the LHCb experiment. The measurements presented are sensitive to the phase-space averaged ratio of doubly Cabibbo-suppressed to Cabibbo-favoured amplitudes $r_{D}^{K3π}$ and the product of the coherence factor $R_{D}^{K3π}$ and a charm mixing parameter $y^{'}_{K3π}$. The constraints measured are $r_{D}^{K3π}=(5.67 \pm 0.12)\times10^{-2}$, which is the most precise determination to date, and $R_{D}^{K3π} \cdot y^{'}_{K3π} = (0.3 \pm 1.8)\times 10^{-3}$, which provides useful input for determinations of the CP-violating phase $γ$ in $B^\pm \to D K^\pm, D \to K^\mpπ^\pmπ^\mpπ^\pm$ decays. The analysis also gives the most precise measurement of the $D^0\to K^+π^-π^+π^-$ branching fraction, and the first observation of $D^0-\bar D^0$ oscillations in this decay mode, with a significance of 8.2 standard deviations.

The $B_{s}^{0} \to K_{S}^{0} K^{*}(892)^{0}$ decay is observed for the first time, with a significance of 7.1 standard deviations. The branching fraction is measured to be \begin{equation*} \mathcal{B}(B_{s}^{0} \to \bar{K}^{0} K^{*}(892)^{0}) + \mathcal{B}(B_{s}^{0} \to K^{0} \bar{K}^{*}(892)^{0}) = (16.4 \pm 3.4 \pm 2.3) \times 10^{-6},\\ \end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. No evidence is found for the decay $B^{0} \to K_{S}^{0} K^{*}(892)^{0}$ and an upper limit is set on the branching fraction, $\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to \bar{K}^{0} K^{*}(892)^{0}) + \mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to K^{0} \bar{K}^{*}(892)^{0}) < 0.96 \ \times 10^{-6}, $ at $90\,\% $ confidence level. Measurement of forward $W\to eν$ production in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8\,$TeV

A measurement of the cross-section for $W \to eν$ production in $pp$ collisions is presented using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $2\,$fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=8\,$TeV. The electrons are required to have more than $20\,$GeV of transverse momentum and to lie between 2.00 and 4.25 in pseudorapidity. The inclusive $W$ production cross-sections, where the $W$ decays to $eν$, are measured to be \begin{equation*} σ_{W^{+} \to e^{+}ν_{e}}=1124.4\pm 2.1\pm 21.5\pm 11.2\pm 13.0\,\mathrm{pb}, \end{equation*} \begin{equation*} σ_{W^{-} \to e^{-}\barν_{e}}=\,\,\,809.0\pm 1.9\pm 18.1\pm\,\,\,7.0\pm \phantom{0}9.4\,\mathrm{pb}, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second are systematic, the third are due to the knowledge of the LHC beam energy and the fourth are due to the luminosity determination. Differential cross-sections as a function of the electron pseudorapidity are measured. The $W^{+}/W^{-}$ cross-section ratio and production charge asymmetry are also reported. Results are compared with theoretical predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Finally, in a precise test of lepton universality, the ratio of $W$ boson branching fractions is determined to be \begin{equation*} \mathcal{B}(W \to eν)/\mathcal{B}(W \to μν)=1.020\pm 0.002\pm 0.019, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

The state is consistent with the $J^P=3/2^+$ $Ξ_b^{*0}$ resonance expected in the quark model. This is the most precise determination of the mass and the first measurement of the natural width of this state. We have also measured the ratio \begin{align*} \frac{σ(pp \to Ξ_b^{*0} X){\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^{*0} \to Ξ_b^- π^+)}{σ(pp \to Ξ_b^- X)} = 0.28 \pm 0.03 \, (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.01 \, (\mathrm{syst}) . \end{align*}

Measurements of long-range near-side angular correlations in $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}=5$TeV proton-lead collisions in the forward region

Two-particle angular correlations are studied in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}=5$TeV, collected with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on data recorded in two beam configurations, in which either the direction of the proton or that of the lead ion is analysed. The correlations are measured in the laboratory system as a function of relative pseudorapidity, $Δη$, and relative azimuthal angle, $Δϕ$, for events in different classes of event activity and for different bins of particle transverse momentum. In high-activity events a long-range correlation on the near side, $Δϕ\approx 0$, is observed in the pseudorapidity range $2.0<η<4.9$. This measurement of long-range correlations on the near side in proton-lead collisions extends previous observations into the forward region up to $η=4.9$. The correlation increases with growing event activity and is found to be more pronounced in the direction of the lead beam. However, the correlation in the direction of the lead and proton beams are found to be compatible when comparing events with similar absolute activity in the direction analysed.

Model-independent evidence for $J/ψp$ contributions to $Λ_b^0\to J/ψp K^-$ decays

The data sample of $Λ_b^0\to J/ψp K^-$ decays acquired with the LHCb detector from 7 and 8~TeV $pp$ collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$, is inspected for the presence of $J/ψp$ or $J/ψK^-$ contributions with minimal assumptions about $K^- p$ contributions. It is demonstrated at more than 9 standard deviations that $Λ_b^0\to J/ψp K^-$ decays cannot be described with $K^- p$ contributions alone, and that $J/ψp$ contributions play a dominant role in this incompatibility. These model-independent results support the previously obtained model-dependent evidence for $P_c^+\to J/ψp$ charmonium-pentaquark states in the same data sample.

Model-independent measurement of mixing parameters in $D^0 \to K_S π^+ π^-$ decays

The first model-independent measurement of the charm mixing parameters in the decay $D^0 \to K_S π^+ π^-$ is reported, using a sample of $pp$ collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The measured values are \begin{eqnarray*} x &=& (-0.86 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.17) \times 10^{-2}, \\ y &=& (+0.03 \pm 0.46 \pm 0.13) \times 10^{-2}, \end{eqnarray*} where the first uncertainties are statistical and include small contributions due to the external input for the strong phase measured by the CLEO collaboration, and the second uncertainties are systematic.

Model-independent measurement of the CKM angle $γ$ using $B^0 \to D K^{\ast 0}$ decays with $D \to K_{S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-}$ and $K_{S}^{0} K^{+} K^{-}$

A binned Dalitz plot analysis of the decays $B^0 \to D K^{\ast 0}$, with $D \to K_{S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-}$ and $K_{S}^{0} K^{+} K^{-}$, is performed to measure the observables $x_\pm$ and $y_\pm$, which are related to the CKM angle $γ$ and the hadronic parameters of the decays. The $D$ decay strong phase variation over the Dalitz plot is taken from measurements performed at the CLEO-c experiment, making the analysis independent of the $D$ decay model. With a sample of proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3.0\,\rm{fb}^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment, the values of the $CP$ violation parameters are found to be $x_+ = 0.05 \pm 0.35 \pm 0.02$, $x_-=-0.31\pm 0.20 \pm 0.04$, $y_+=-0.81\pm 0.28\pm 0.06$ and $y_-=0.31\pm 0.21 \pm 0.05$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These observables correspond to values $γ$ = $(71 \pm 20)^\circ$, $r_{B^0} = 0.56\pm 0.17$ and $δ_{B^0} = (204\,^{+21}_{-20})^\circ$. The parameters $r_{B^0}$ and $δ_{B^0}$ are the magnitude ratio and strong phase difference between the suppressed and favoured $B^0$ decay amplitudes, and have been measured in a region of $\pm 50$ MeV/$c^2$ around the $K^{\ast}(892)^{0}$ mass and with the magnitude of the cosine of the $K^{\ast}(892)^{0}$ helicity angle larger than 0.4.

Observation of $ Λ_b^0 \to ψ(2S)pK^-$ and $ Λ_b^0 \to J/ψπ^+ π^- pK^-$ decays and a measurement of the $Λ_b^0$ baryon mass

The decays $ Λ_b^0 \to ψ(2S)pK^-$ and $ Λ_b^0 \to J/ψπ^+ π^- pK^-$ are observed in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb$^{-1}$, collected in proton-proton collisions at 7 and 8TeV centre-of-mass energies by the LHCb detector. The $ψ(2S)$ mesons are reconstructed through the decay modes $ψ(2S)\toμ^+μ^-$ and $ψ(2S)\to J/ψπ^+π^-$. The branching fractions relative to that of $ Λ_b^0 \to J/ψpK^-$ are measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} \frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to ψ(2S) pK^-)} {\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to J/ψpK^-)} & = & (20.70\pm 0.76\pm 0.46\pm 0.37)\times10^{-2} \,, \frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to J/ψπ^+ π^- pK^-)} {\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to J/ψpK^-)} & = & (20.86\pm 0.96\pm 1.34)\times10^{-2} \,, \end{eqnarray*} where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second are systematic and the third is related to the knowledge of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ branching fractions. The mass of the $Λ_b^0$ baryon is measured to be $$ M(Λ_b^0) = 5619.65 \pm 0.17 \pm 0.17\mathrm{MeV}/c^2,$$ where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic.

The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 $\text{fb}^{-1}$ collected in $pp$ collisions by LHCb at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. This is the first observation of this decay channel, with a statistical significance of 15 standard deviations. The mass of the $B_s^0$ meson is measured to be $5367.08\,\pm \,0.38\,\pm\, 0.15$ MeV/c$^2$. The branching fraction ratio $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \rightarrow J/ψϕϕ)/\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \rightarrow J/ψϕ)$ is measured to be $0.0115\,\pm\, 0.0012\, ^{+0.0005}_{-0.0009}$. In both cases, the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Production of associated $Υ$ and open charm hadrons in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ and $8$TeV via double parton scattering

Associated production of bottomonia and open charm hadrons in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ and $8$TeV is observed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3$fb^{-1}$ accumulated with the LHCb detector. The observation of five combinations, $Υ(1S)D^0$, $Υ(2S)D^0$, $Υ(1S)D^+$, $Υ(2S)D^+$ and $Υ(1S)D^+_{s}$, is reported. Production cross-sections are measured for $Υ(1S)D^0$ and $Υ(1S)D^+$ pairs in the forward region. The measured cross-sections and the differential distributions indicate the dominance of double parton scattering as the main production mechanism. This allows a precise measurement of the effective cross-section for double parton scattering.

Search for long-lived heavy charged particles using a ring imaging Cherenkov technique at LHCb

A search is performed for heavy long-lived charged particles using 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ of pp collisions collected at $\sqrt{s}$= 7 and 8 TeV with the LHCb detector. The search is mainly based on the response of the ring imaging Cherenkovdetectors to distinguish the heavy, slow-moving particles from muons. No evidence is found for the production of such long-lived states. The results are expressed as limits on the Drell-Yan production of pairs of long-lived particles, with both particles in the LHCb pseudorapidity acceptance, $1.8 < η< 4.9$. The mass-dependent cross-section upper limits are in the range 2-4 fb (at 95\% CL) for masses between 124 and 309 GeV/c$^2$.

Search for violations of Lorentz invariance and $ CPT$ symmetry in $ B^0_{(s)}$ mixing

Violations of $ CPT$ symmetry and Lorentz invariance are searched for by studying interference effects in $ B^0$ mixing and in $ B^0_s$ mixing. Samples of $ B^0\to J/ψK^0_{\mathrm{S}}$ and $ B^0_s\to J/ψK^+ K^-$ decays are recorded by the LHCb detector in proton--proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$. No periodic variations of the particle-antiparticle mass differences are found, consistent with Lorentz invariance and $ CPT$ symmetry. Relative magnitude and phase information is determined, and coherence factors and related observables are computed for both the whole phase space and a restricted region of $100\,\mathrm{MeV/}c^2$ around the $K^{*}(892)^{\pm}$ resonance. Two formulations for the $Kπ$ $S$-wave are used, both of which give a good description of the data. The ratio of branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(D^0\to K^0_S K^+ π^-)/\mathcal{B}(D^0\to K^0_S K^- π^+)$ is measured to be $0.655\pm0.004\,(\textrm{stat})\pm0.006\,(\textrm{syst})$ over the full phase space and $0.370\pm0.003\, (\textrm{stat})\pm0.012\,(\textrm{syst})$ in the restricted region. A search for $CP$ violation is performed using the amplitude models and no significant effect is found. Predictions from $SU(3)$ flavor symmetry for $K^{*}(892)K$ amplitudes of different charges are compared with the amplitude model results.

Study of the production of $Λ_b^0$ and $\overline{B}^0$ hadrons in $pp$ collisions and first measurement of the $Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpK^-$ branching fraction

The product of the $Λ_b^0$ ($\overline{B}^0$) differential production cross-section and the branching fraction of the decay $Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpK^-$ ($\overline{B}^0\rightarrow J/ψ\overline{K}^*(892)^0$) is measured as a function of the beauty hadron transverse momentum, $p_{\rm T}$, and rapidity, $y$. The kinematic region of the measurements is $p_{\rm T}<20~{\rm GeV}/c$ and $2.0<y<4.5$. The measurements use a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3~{\rm fb}^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb detector in $pp$ collisions at centre-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}=7~{\rm TeV}$ in 2011 and $\sqrt{s}=8~{\rm TeV}$ in 2012. Based on previous LHCb results of the fragmentation fraction ratio, $f_{Λ_B^0}/f_d$, the branching fraction of the decay $Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpK^-$ is measured to be \begin{equation*} \mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpK^-)= (3.17\pm0.04\pm0.07\pm0.34^{+0.45}_{-0.28})\times10^{-4}, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, the third is due to the uncertainty on the branching fraction of the decay $\overline{B}^0\rightarrow J/ψ\overline{K}^*(892)^0$, and the fourth is due to the knowledge of $f_{Λ_b^0}/f_d$. The sum of the asymmetries in the production and decay between $Λ_b^0$ and $\overlineΛ_b^0$ is also measured as a function of $p_{\rm T}$ and $y$. $B$ flavour tagging using charm decays at the LHCb experiment

An algorithm is described for tagging the flavour content at production of neutral $B$ mesons in the LHCb experiment. The algorithm exploits the correlation of the flavour of a $B$ meson with the charge of a reconstructed secondary charm hadron from the decay of the other $b$ hadron produced in the proton-proton collision. Charm hadron candidates are identified in a number of fully or partially reconstructed Cabibbo-favoured decay modes. The algorithm is calibrated on the self-tagged decay modes $B^+ \to J/ψ\, K^+$ and $B^0 \to J/ψ\, K^{*0}$ using $3.0\mathrm{\,fb}^{-1}$ of data collected by the LHCb experiment at $pp$ centre-of-mass energies of $7\mathrm{\,TeV}$ and $8\mathrm{\,TeV}$. The data are described by an amplitude model that contains contributions from intermediate $K^*(892)^0$, $K^*(1410)^0$, $K^*_2(1430)^0$ and $D^*_2(2460)^-$ resonances. The model also contains components to describe broad structures, including the $K^*_0(1430)^0$ and $D^*_0(2400)^-$ resonances, in the $Kπ$ S-wave and the $Dπ$ S- and P-waves. The masses and widths of the $D^*_0(2400)^-$ and $D^*_2(2460)^-$ resonances are measured, as are the complex amplitudes and fit fractions for all components included in the amplitude model. Dalitz plot analysis of $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 π^+π^-$ decays

The resonant substructures of $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 π^+π^-$ decays are studied with the Dalitz plot technique. In this study a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions collected by the LHCb detector is used. The branching fraction of the $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 π^+π^-$ decay in the region $m(\overline{D}^0π^{\pm})>2.1$ GeV$/c^2$ is measured to be $(8.46 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.29 \pm 0.40) \times 10^{-4}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the last arises from the normalisation channel $B^0 \to D^*(2010)^-π^+$. The $π^+π^-$ S-wave components are modelled with the Isobar and K-matrix formalisms. Results of the Dalitz plot analyses using both models are presented. A resonant structure at $m(\overline{D}^0π^-) \approx 2.8$ GeV$/c^{2}$ is confirmed and its spin-parity is determined for the first time as $J^P = 3^-$. The branching fraction, mass and width of this structure are determined together with those of the $D^*_0(2400)^-$ and $D^*_2(2460)^-$ resonances. The branching fractions of other $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 h^0$ decay components with $h^0 \to π^+π^-$ are also reported. Many of these branching fraction measurements are the most precise to date. The first observation of the decays $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 f_0(500)$, $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 f_0(980)$, $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 ρ(1450)$, $B^0 \to D_3^*(2760)^- π^+$ and the first evidence of $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 f_0(2020)$ are presented.

Determination of the quark coupling strength $|V_{ub}|$ using baryonic decays

In the Standard Model of particle physics, the strength of the couplings of the $b$ quark to the $u$ and $c$ quarks, $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$, are governed by the coupling of the quarks to the Higgs boson. Using data from the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, the probability for the $Λ^0_b$ baryon to decay into the $p μ^- \overlineν_μ$ final state relative to the $Λ^+_c μ^- \overlineν_μ$ final state is measured. Combined with theoretical calculations of the strong interaction and a previously measured value of $|V_{cb}|$, the first $|V_{ub}|$ measurement to use a baryonic decay is performed. This measurement is consistent with previous determinations of $|V_{ub}|$ using $B$ meson decays to specific final states and confirms the existing incompatibility with those using an inclusive sample of final states.

Evidence for the strangeness-changing weak decay $Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-$

Using a $pp$ collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0~fb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb detector, we present the first search for the strangeness-changing weak decay $Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-$. No $b$ hadron decay of this type has been seen before. A signal for this decay, corresponding to a significance of 3.2 standard deviations, is reported. The relative rate is measured to be ${f_{Ξ_b^-}\over{f_{Λ_b^0}}}{\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-) = (5.7\pm1.8^{+0.8}_{-0.9})\times10^{-4}$, where $f_{Ξ_b^-}$ and $f_{Λ_b^0}$ are the $b\toΞ_b^-$ and $b\toΛ_b^0$ fragmentation fractions, and ${\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-)$ is the branching fraction. Assuming $f_{Ξ_b^-}/f_{Λ_b^0}$ is bounded between 0.1 and 0.3, the branching fraction ${\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-)$ would lie in the range from $(0.57\pm0.21)\%$ to $(0.19\pm0.07)\%$.

Extension of nano-confined DNA: quantitative comparison between experiment and theory

The extension of DNA confined to nanochannels has been studied intensively and in detail. Yet quantitative comparisons between experiments and model calculations are difficult because most theoretical predictions involve undetermined prefactors, and because the model parameters (contour length, Kuhn length, effective width) are difficult to compute reliably, leading to substantial uncertainties. Here we use a recent asymptotically exact theory for the DNA extension in the "extended de Gennes regime" that allows us to compare experimental results with theory. For this purpose we performed new experiments, measuring the mean DNA extension and its standard deviation while varying the channel geometry, dye intercalation ratio, and ionic buffer strength. The experimental results agree very well with theory at high ionic strengths, indicating that the model parameters are reliable. At low ionic strengths the agreement is less good. We discuss possible reasons. Our approach allows, in principle, to measure the Kuhn length and effective width of a single DNA molecule and more generally of semiflexible polymers in solution.

First measurement of the differential branching fraction and $C\!P$ asymmetry of the $B^\pm\toπ^\pmμ^+μ^-$ decay

The differential branching fraction with respect to the dimuon invariant mass squared, and the $C\!P$ asymmetry of the $B^\pm\toπ^\pmμ^+μ^-$ decay are measured for the first time. The CKM matrix elements $|V_{td}|$ and $|V_{ts}|$, and the ratio $|V_{td}/V_{ts}|$ are determined. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The total branching fraction and $C\!P$ asymmetry of $B^\pm\toπ^\pmμ^+μ^-$ decays are measured to be \begin{eqnarray} \mathcal{B}(B^\pm\toπ^\pmμ^+μ^-) &=& (1.83 \pm 0.24 \pm 0.05) \times 10^{-8}\,\,\,\mathrm{and} \nonumber\\ \mathcal{A}_{C\!P}(B^\pm\toπ^\pmμ^+μ^-) &=& -0.11 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.01\,, \nonumber \end{eqnarray} where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These are the most precise measurements of these observables to date, and they are compatible with the predictions of the Standard Model.

First observation of top quark production in the forward region

Top quark production in the forward region in proton-proton collisions is observed for the first time. The $W\!+\!b$ final state with $W\toμν$ is reconstructed using muons with a transverse momentum, $p_{\rm T}$, larger than 25 GeV in the pseudorapidity range $2.0<η<4.5$. The $b$ jets are required to have $50 < p_{\rm T} < 100$ GeV and $2.2 < η< 4.2$, while the transverse component of the sum of the muon and $b$-jet momenta must satisfy $p_{\rm T} > 20$ GeV. The results are based on data corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1.0 and $2.0$ fb$^{-1}$ collected at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV by LHCb. The inclusive top quark production cross-sections in the fiducial region are $σ({\rm top})[7\rm{TeV}] = 239\pm53({\rm stat})\pm33({\rm syst})\pm24({\rm theory})\,{\rm fb}$ and $σ({\rm top})[8\rm{TeV}] = 289\pm43({\rm stat})\pm40({\rm syst})\pm29({\rm theory})\,{\rm fb}$. These results, along with the observed differential yields and charge asymmetries, are in agreement with next-to-leading order Standard Model predictions.

Galaxy Cluster Mass Reconstruction Project: II. Quantifying scatter and bias using contrasting mock catalogues

This article is the second in a series in which we perform an extensive comparison of various galaxy-based cluster mass estimation techniques that utilise the positions, velocities and colours of galaxies. Our aim is to quantify the scatter, systematic bias and completeness of cluster masses derived from a diverse set of 25 galaxy-based methods using two contrasting mock galaxy catalogues based on a sophisticated halo occupation model and a semi-analytic model. Analysing 968 clusters, we find a wide range in the RMS errors in log M200c delivered by the different methods (0.18 to 1.08 dex, i.e., a factor of ~1.5 to 12), with abundance matching and richness methods providing the best results, irrespective of the input model assumptions. In addition, certain methods produce a significant number of catastrophic cases where the mass is under- or over-estimated by a factor greater than 10. Given the steeply falling high-mass end of the cluster mass function, we recommend that richness or abundance matching-based methods are used in conjunction with these methods as a sanity check for studies selecting high mass clusters. We see a stronger correlation of the recovered to input number of galaxies for both catalogues in comparison with the group/cluster mass, however, this does not guarantee that the correct member galaxies are being selected. We do not observe significantly higher scatter for either mock galaxy catalogues. Our results have implications for cosmological analyses that utilise the masses, richnesses, or abundances of clusters, which have different uncertainties when different methods are used.

Identification of beauty and charm quark jets at LHCb

Identification of jets originating from beauty and charm quarks is important for measuring Standard Model processes and for searching for new physics. The performance of algorithms developed to select $b$- and $c$-quark jets is measured using data recorded by LHCb from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV in 2011 and at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV in 2012. The efficiency for identifying a $b(c)$ jet is about 65%(25%) with a probability for misidentifying a light-parton jet of 0.3% for jets with transverse momentum $p_{\rm T} > 20$ GeV and pseudorapidity $2.2 < η< 4.2$. The dependence of the performance on the $p_{\rm T}$ and $η$ of the jet is also measured.

Measurement of ${C\!P}$ violation parameters and polarisation fractions in ${B_s^0\to J/ψ\overline{K}^{*0}}$ decays

The first measurement of ${C\!P}$ asymmetries in the decay ${B_s^0\to J/ψ\overline{K}^{*}(892)^{0}}$ and an updated measurement of its branching fraction and polarisation fractions are presented. The results are obtained using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3.0\,fb^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions recorded with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of $7$ and $8\,\mathrm{TeV}$. Together with constraints from ${B^0\to J/ψρ^0}$, the results are used to constrain additional contributions due to penguin diagrams in the ${C\!P}$-violating phase ${ϕ_{s}}$, measured through ${B_s^0}$ decays to charmonium.

Measurement of $CP$ violation in $B^0 \rightarrow J/ψK^0_S$ decays

Measurements are presented of the $CP$ violation observables $S$ and $C$ in the decays of $B^0$ and $\overline{B}{}^0$ mesons to the $J/ψK^0_S$ final state. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $3.0\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of $7$ and $8\,\text{TeV}$. The analysis of the time evolution of $41500$ $B^0$ and $\overline{B}{}^0$ decays yields $S = 0.731 \pm 0.035 \, \text{(stat)} \pm 0.020 \,\text{(syst)}$ and $C = -0.038 \pm 0.032 \, \text{(stat)} \pm 0.005\,\text{(syst)}$. In the Standard Model, $S$ equals $\sin(2β)$ to a good level of precision. The values are consistent with the current world averages and with the Standard Model expectations.

Measurement of the $B_s^0 \to ϕϕ$ branching fraction and search for the decay $B^0 \to ϕϕ$

Using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ collected in $pp$ collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, the $B_s^0 \to ϕϕ$ branching fraction is measured to be \[ \mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to ϕϕ) = ( 1.84 \pm 0.05 (\text{stat}) \pm 0.07 (\text{syst}) \pm 0.11 (f_s/f_d) \pm 0.12 (\text{norm}) ) \times 10^{-5}, \] where $f_s/f_d$ represents the ratio of the $B_s^0$ to $B^0$ production cross-sections, and the $B^0 \to ϕK^*(892)^0$ decay mode is used for normalization. This is the most precise measurement of this branching fraction to date, representing a factor five reduction in the statistical uncertainty compared with the previous best measurement. A search for the decay $B^0 \to ϕϕ$ is also made. No signal is observed, and an upper limit on the branching fraction is set as \[ \mathcal{B}(B^0 \to ϕϕ) < 2.8 \times 10^{-8} \] at 90% confidence level. This is a factor of seven improvement compared to the previous best limit.

Measurement of the branching fraction ratio $\mathcal{B}(B_c^+ \rightarrow ψ(2S)π^+)/\mathcal{B}(B_c^+ \rightarrow J/ψπ^+)$

Using $pp$ collision data collected by LHCb at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$, the ratio of the branching fraction of the $B_c^+ \rightarrow ψ(2S)π^+$ decay relative to that of the $B_c^+ \rightarrow J/ψπ^+$ decay is measured to be 0.268 $\pm$ 0.032 (stat) $\pm$ 0.007 (syst) $\pm$ 0.006 (BF). The first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainties on the branching fractions of the $J/ψ\rightarrow μ^+μ^-$ and $ψ(2S) \rightarrow μ^+μ^-$ decays. This measurement is consistent with the previous LHCb result, and the statistical uncertainty is halved.

Measurement of the exclusive $Υ$ production cross-section in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$7 TeV and 8 TeV

A study is presented of central exclusive production of $Υ(nS)$ states, where the $Υ(nS)$ resonances decay to the $μ^+μ^-$ final state, using $pp$ collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment. The cross-section is measured in the rapidity range $2<y(Υ)<4.5$ where the muons are reconstructed in the pseudorapidity range $2<η(μ^\pm)<4.5$. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 fb$^{-1}$ and was collected at centre-of-mass energies of $7$ TeV and $8$ TeV. The measured $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ production cross-sections are \begin{eqnarray} σ(pp \to pΥ(1S)p) &=& 9.0 \pm 2.1 \pm 1.7\textrm{ pb and}\nonumber\\ σ(pp \to pΥ(2S)p) &=& 1.3 \pm 0.8 \pm 0.3\textrm{ pb},\nonumber \end{eqnarray} where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The $Υ(1S)$ cross-section is also measured as a function of rapidity and is found to be in good agreement with Standard Model predictions. An upper limit is set at 3.4 pb at the 95\% confidence level for the exclusive $Υ(3S)$ production cross-section, including possible contamination from $χ_b(3P)\toΥ(3S)γ$ decays.

Measurement of the forward $Z$ boson production cross-section in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV

A measurement of the production cross-section for $Z$ bosons that decay to muons is presented. The data were recorded by the LHCb detector during $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$. The cross-section is measured for muons in the pseudorapidity range $2.0 < η< 4.5$ with transverse momenta $p_{T} > 20$ GeV/c. The dimuon mass is restricted to $60 < M_{μ^{+}μ^{-}} < 120$ GeV/c$^{2}$. The measured cross-section is $$σ_{Z\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-}} = (76.0 \pm 0.3 \pm 0.5 \pm 1.0 \pm 1.3) \, \text{pb}$$ where the uncertainties are due to the sample size, systematic effects, the beam energy and the luminosity. This result is in good agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. The cross-section is also measured differentially as a function of kinematic variables of the $Z$ boson. Ratios of the production cross-sections of electroweak bosons are presented using updated LHCb measurements of $W$ boson production. A precise test of the Standard Model is provided by the measurement of the ratio $$\frac{σ_{W^{+}\rightarrowμ^{+}ν_μ} + σ_{W^{-}\rightarrowμ^{-}\barν_μ}}{σ_{Z\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-}}} = 20.63\pm0.09\pm0.12\pm0.05,$$ where the uncertainty due to luminosity cancels.

Observation of $J/ψp$ resonances consistent with pentaquark states in ${Λ_b^0\to J/ψK^-p}$ decays

Observations of exotic structures in the $J/ψp$ channel, that we refer to as pentaquark-charmonium states, in $Λ_b^0\to J/ψK^- p$ decays are presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3/fb acquired with the LHCb detector from 7 and 8 TeV pp collisions. An amplitude analysis is performed on the three-body final-state that reproduces the two-body mass and angular distributions. To obtain a satisfactory fit of the structures seen in the $J/ψp$ mass spectrum, it is necessary to include two Breit-Wigner amplitudes that each describe a resonant state. The significance of each of these resonances is more than 9 standard deviations. One has a mass of $4380\pm 8\pm 29$ MeV and a width of $205\pm 18\pm 86$ MeV, while the second is narrower, with a mass of $4449.8\pm 1.7\pm 2.5$ MeV and a width of $39\pm 5\pm 19$ MeV. The preferred $J^P$ assignments are of opposite parity, with one state having spin 3/2 and the other 5/2.

Search for hidden-sector bosons in $B^0 \!\to K^{*0}μ^+μ^-$ decays

A search is presented for hidden-sector bosons, $χ$, produced in the decay ${B^0\!\to K^*(892)^0χ}$, with $K^*(892)^0\!\to K^{+}π^{-}$ and $χ\!\toμ^+μ^-$. The search is performed using $pp$-collision data corresponding to 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector. No significant signal is observed in the accessible mass range $214 \leq m(χ) \leq 4350$ MeV, and upper limits are placed on the branching fraction product $\mathcal{B}(B^0\!\to K^*(892)^0χ)\times\mathcal{B}(χ\!\toμ^+μ^-)$ as a function of the mass and lifetime of the $χ$ boson. These limits are of the order of $10^{-9}$ for $χ$ lifetimes less than 100 ps over most of the $m(χ)$ range, and place the most stringent constraints to date on many theories that predict the existence of additional low-mass bosons.

Study of $B^{-}\to DK^-π^+π^-$ and $B^-\to Dπ^-π^+π^-$ decays and determination of the CKM angle $γ$

We report a study of the suppressed $B^-\to DK^-π^+π^-$ and favored $B^-\to Dπ^-π^+π^-$ decays, where the neutral $D$ meson is detected through its decays to the $K^{\mp}π^{\pm}$ and CP-even $K^+K^-$ and $π^+π^-$ final states. The measurement is carried out using a proton-proton collision data sample collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0~fb$^{-1}$. We observe the first significant signals in the CP-even final states of the $D$ meson for both the suppressed $B^-\to DK^-π^+π^-$ and favored $B^-\to Dπ^-π^+π^-$ modes, as well as in the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed $D\to K^+π^-$ final state of the $B^-\to Dπ^-π^+π^-$ decay. Study of $W$ boson production in association with beauty and charm

The associated production of a $W$ boson with a jet originating from either a light parton or heavy-flavor quark is studied in the forward region using proton-proton collisions. The analysis uses data corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1.0 and $2.0\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, respectively. The $W$ bosons are reconstructed using the $W\toμν$ decay and muons with a transverse momentum, $p_{\rm T}$, larger than 20 GeV in the pseudorapidity range $2.0<η<4.5$. The partons are reconstructed as jets with $p_{\rm T} > 20$ GeV and $2.2 < η< 4.2$. The sum of the muon and jet momenta must satisfy $p_{\rm T} > 20$ GeV. The fraction of $W+$jet events that originate from beauty and charm quarks is measured, along with the charge asymmetries of the $W\!+\!b$ and $W\!+\!c$ production cross-sections. Galaxy Cluster Mass Reconstruction Project: I. Methods and first results on galaxy-based techniques

This paper is the first in a series in which we perform an extensive comparison of various galaxy-based cluster mass estimation techniques that utilise the positions, velocities and colours of galaxies. Our primary aim is to test the performance of these cluster mass estimation techniques on a diverse set of models that will increase in complexity. We begin by providing participating methods with data from a simple model that delivers idealised clusters, enabling us to quantify the underlying scatter intrinsic to these mass estimation techniques. The mock catalogue is based on a Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) model that assumes spherical Navarro, Frenk and White (NFW) haloes truncated at R_200, with no substructure nor colour segregation, and with isotropic, isothermal Maxwellian velocities. We find that, above 10^14 M_solar, recovered cluster masses are correlated with the true underlying cluster mass with an intrinsic scatter of typically a factor of two. Below 10^14 M_solar, the scatter rises as the number of member galaxies drops and rapidly approaches an order of magnitude. We find that richness-based methods deliver the lowest scatter, but it is not clear whether such accuracy may simply be the result of using an over-simplistic model to populate the galaxies in their haloes. Even when given the true cluster membership, large scatter is observed for the majority non-richness-based approaches, suggesting that mass reconstruction with a low number of dynamical tracers is inherently problematic.

The visibility of Lyman Alpha Emitters: constraining reionization, ionizing photons and dust

We build a physical model for high-redshift Lyman Alpha emitters (LAEs) by coupling state of the art cosmological simulations (GADGET-2) with a dust model and a radiative transfer code (pCRASH). We post-process the cosmological simulation with pCRASH using five different values of the escape fraction of hydrogen ionizing photons (f_esc=0.05,0.25,0.5,0.75,0.95) until reionization is complete, i.e. the average neutral hydrogen fraction drops to <X_HI>~10^-4. Then, the only free-parameter left to match model results to the observed Lya and UV luminosity functions of LAEs at z~6.6 is the relative escape of Lyman Alpha (Lya) and continuum photons from the galactic environment (f_alpha/f_c). We find a three-dimensional degeneracy such that the theoretical model can be reconciled with observations for an IGM Lya transmission <T_alpha>_LAE~38-50% (which translates to <X_HI>~0.5-10^-4 for Gaussian emission lines), f_esc~0.05-0.50 and f_alpha/f_c~0.6-1.8.

The Gravitational Universe

The last century has seen enormous progress in our understanding of the Universe. We know the life cycles of stars, the structure of galaxies, the remnants of the big bang, and have a general understanding of how the Universe evolved. We have come remarkably far using electromagnetic radiation as our tool for observing the Universe. However, gravity is the engine behind many of the processes in the Universe, and much of its action is dark. Opening a gravitational window on the Universe will let us go further than any alternative. Gravity has its own messenger: Gravitational waves, ripples in the fabric of spacetime. They travel essentially undisturbed and let us peer deep into the formation of the first seed black holes, exploring redshifts as large as z ~ 20, prior to the epoch of cosmic re-ionisation. Exquisite and unprecedented measurements of black hole masses and spins will make it possible to trace the history of black holes across all stages of galaxy evolution, and at the same time constrain any deviation from the Kerr metric of General Relativity. eLISA will be the first ever mission to study the entire Universe with gravitational waves. eLISA is an all-sky monitor and will offer a wide view of a dynamic cosmos using gravitational waves as new and unique messengers to unveil The Gravitational Universe. It provides the closest ever view of the early processes at TeV energies, has guaranteed sources in the form of verification binaries in the Milky Way, and can probe the entire Universe, from its smallest scales around singularities and black holes, all the way to cosmological dimensions.

Galaxy morphology, luminosity and, environment in the SDSS DR7

We study the influence of the environment on the evolution of galaxies by investigating the luminosity function (LF) of galaxies of different morphological types and colours at different environmental density levels. We construct the LFs separately for galaxies of different morphology (spiral and elliptical) and of different colours (red and blue) using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), correcting the luminosities for the intrinsic absorption. We use the global luminosity density field to define different environments, and analyse the environmental dependence of galaxy morphology and colour. The smoothed bootstrap method is used to calculate confidence regions of the derived luminosity functions. We find a strong environmental dependency for the LF of elliptical galaxies. The LF of spiral galaxies is almost environment independent, suggesting that spiral galaxy formation mechanisms are similar in different environments. Absorption by the intrinsic dust influences the bright-end of the LF of spiral galaxies. After attenuation correction, the brightest spiral galaxies are still about 0.5 mag less luminous than the brightest elliptical galaxies, except in the least dense environment, where spiral galaxies dominate the LF at every luminosity. Despite the extent of the SDSS survey, the influence of single rich superclusters is present in the galactic LF of the densest environment.

The cosmic web for density perturbations of various scales

We follow the evolution of galaxy systems in numerical simulation. Our goal is to understand the role of density perturbations of various scales in the formation and evolution of the cosmic web. We perform numerical simulations with the full power spectrum of perturbations, and with spectrum cut at long wavelengths. Additionally, we have one model, where we cut the intermediate waves. We analyze the density field and study the void sizes and density field clusters in different models. Our analysis shows that the fine structure (groups and clusters of galaxies) is created by small-scale density perturbations of scale $\leq 8$ \Mpc. Filaments of galaxies and clusters are created by perturbations of intermediate scale from $\sim 8$ to $\sim 32$ \Mpc, superclusters of galaxies by larger perturbations. We conclude that the scale of the pattern of the cosmic web is determined by density perturbations of scale up to $\sim 100$ \Mpc. Larger perturbations do not change the pattern of the web, but modulate the richness of galaxy systems, and make voids emptier. The stop of the increase of the scale of the pattern of the cosmic web with increasing scale of density perturbations can probably be explained as the freezing of the web at redshift $z\simeq 0.7$.

Towards understanding the structure of voids in the cosmic web

Our goal is to see how density waves of different scale combine to form voids between galaxy systems of various scale. We perform numerical simulations of structure formation in cubes of size 100 and 256 Mpc/h, with resolutions 256^3 and 512^3 particles and cells. To understand the role of density perturbations of various scale we cut power spectra at scales from 8 to 128 Mpc/h, using in all series identical initial random realisations. We find that small haloes and short filaments form all over the simulation box, if perturbations only up to scale 8 Mpc/h are present. The phenomenon of large multi-scale voids in the cosmic web requires the presence of an extended spectrum of primordial density perturbations. The void phenomenon is due to the action of two processes: the synchronisation of density perturbations of medium and large scales, and the suppression of galaxy formation in low-density regions by the combined action of negative sections of medium- and large-scale density perturbations, so that their densities are less than the mean density, and thus during the evolution their densities decrease.

Wavelet analysis of the formation of the cosmic web

According to the modern cosmological paradigm galaxies and galaxy systems form from tiny density perturbations generated during the very early phase of the evolution of the Universe. Using numerical simulations we study the evolution of phases of density perturbations of different scales to understand the formation and evolution of the cosmic web. We apply the wavelet analysis to follow the evolution of high-density regions (clusters and superclusters) of the cosmic web. We show that the positions of maxima and minima of density waves (their spatial phases) almost do not change during the evolution of the structure. Positions of extrema of density perturbations are the more stable, the larger is the wavelength of perturbations. Combining observational and simulation data we conclude that the skeleton of the cosmic web was present already in an early stage of structure evolution.

The luminosity function depends on redshift, density of the environment and is different for the Norther and Southern slice of SDSS. Luminosity functions is used to derive the number and luminosity density fields of galaxies of the SDSS and LCRS surveys with a grid size of 1 h^{-1} Mpc for flat cosmological models with Ω_m=0.3 and Ω_Λ=0.7. We find that the luminosity function depends on the density of the environment: in high-density regions brightest galaxies are more luminous than in low-density regions by a factor up to 5.

Superlarge-Scale Structure in N-body Simulations

The simulated matter distribution on large scales is studied using core-sampling, cluster analysis, inertia tensor analysis, and minimal spanning tree techniques. Seven simulations in large boxes for five cosmological models with COBE normalized CDM-like power spectra are studied. The wall-like Super Large Scale Structure with parameters similar to the observed one is found for the OCDM and LCDM models with Omega_m h = 0.3 & 0.245. In these simulations, the rich structure elements with a typical value for the largest extension of \~(30 - 50) h^-1 Mpc incorporate ~40% of matter with overdensity of about 10 above the mean. These rich elements are formed due to the anisotropic nonlinear compression of sheets with original size of ~(15 - 25) h^{-1} Mpc. They surround low-density regions with a typical diameter ~(50 - 70) h^{-1} Mpc. The statistical characteristics of these structures are found to be approximately consistent with observations and theoretical expectations. The cosmological models with higher matter density Ω_m=1 in CDM with Harrison-Zeldovich or tilted power spectra cannot reproduce the characteristics of the observed galaxy distribution due to the very strong disruption of the rich structure elements. Another model with a broken scale invariant initial power spectrum (BCDM) shows not enough matter concentration in the rich structure elements.

The supercluster--void network II. An oscillating cluster correlation function

We use rich clusters of galaxies in the Northern and Southern Galactic hemispheres up to a redshift z=0.12 to determine the cluster correlation function. We show that superclusters of galaxies and voids between them form a moderately regular network. As a result the correlation function determined for clusters located in rich superclusters oscillates: it has a series of regularly spaced secondary maxima and minima. The scale of the supercluster-void network, determined from the period of oscillations, is P=115 Mpc. The amplitude of oscillations is about 3 times larger than the estimated error. We compare the observed cluster correlation function with similar functions derived for popular models of structure formation. We find that the production of the observed cluster correlation function in any model with a smooth transition of the power spectrum from a Harrison-Zeldovich regime with positive spectral index on long wavelengths to a negative spectral index on short wavelengths is highly unlikely. The power spectrum must have an extra peak located at the wavelength equal to the period of oscillations of the correlation function.

The supercluster--void network III. The correlation function as a geometrical statistic

We investigate properties of the correlation function of clusters of galaxies using geometrical models. On small scales the correlation function depends on the shape and the size of superclusters. On large scales it describes the geometry of the distribution of superclusters. If superclusters are distributed randomly then the correlation function on large scales is featureless. If superclusters and voids have a tendency to form a regular lattice then the correlation function on large scales has quasi-regularly spaced maxima and minima of decaying amplitude; i.e., it is oscillating. The period of oscillations is equal to the step size of the grid of the lattice. We calculate the power spectrum for our models and compare the geometrical information of the correlation function with other statistics. We find that geometric properties (the regularity of the distribution of clusters on large scales) are better quantified by the correlation function. We also analyse errors in the correlation function and the power spectrum by generating random realizations of models and finding the scatter of these realizations.

Large-scale structure formation for power spectra with broken scale invariance

We have simulated the formation of large-scale structure arising from COBE-normalized spectra computed by convolving a primordial double-inflation perturbation spectrum with the CDM transfer function. Due to the broken scale invariance ('BSI') characterizing the primordial perturbation spectrum, this model has less small-scale power than the (COBE-normalized) standard CDM model. The particle-mesh code (with $512^3$ cells and $256^3$ particles) includes a model for thermodynamic evolution of baryons in addition to the usual gravitational dynamics of dark matter. It provides an estimate of the local gas temperature. In particular, our galaxy-finding procedure seeks peaks in the distribution of gas that has cooled. It exploits the fact that ``cold" particles trace visible matter better than average and thus provides a natural biasing mechanism. The basic picture of large-scale structure formation in the BSI model is the familiar hierarchical clustering scenario. We obtain particle in cell statistics, the galaxy correlation function, the cluster abundance and the cluster-cluster correlation function and statistics for large and small scale velocity fields. We also report here on a semi-quantitative study of the distribution of gas in different temperature ranges. Based on confrontation with observations and comparison with standard CDM, we conclude that the BSI scenario could represent a promising modification of the CDM picture capable of describing many details of large-scale structure formation.
