Size-induced depression of first-order transition lines and entropy-jump in extremely-layered nanocrystalline vortex matter

We detect the persistence of the solidification and order-disorder first-order transition lines in the phase diagram of nanocrystalline Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$ vortex matter down to a system size of less than hundred vortices. The temperature-location of the vortex solidification transition line is not altered by decreasing the sample size although there is a depletion of the entropy-jump at the transition with respect to macroscopic vortex matter. The solid order-disorder phase transition field moves upward on decreasing the system size due to the increase of the surface-to-volume ratio of vortices entailing a decrease on the average vortex binding energy.

Latent-heat and non-linear vortex liquid at the vicinity of the first-order phase transition in layered high-Tc superconductors

In this work we revisit the vortex matter phase diagram in layered superconductors solving still open questions by means of AC and DC local magnetic measurements in the paradigmatic Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$ compound. We show that measuring with AC magnetic techniques is mandatory in order to probe the bulk response of vortex matter, particularly at high-temperatures where surface barriers for vortex entrance dominate. From the $T_{\rm FOT}$-evolution of the enthalpy and latent-heat at the transition we find that, contrary to previous reports, the nature of the dominant interlayer coupling is electromagnetic in the whole temperature range. By studying the dynamic properties of the phase located at $T \gtrsim T_{\rm FOT}$, we reveal the spanning in a considerable fraction of the phase diagram of a non-linear vortex phase suggesting bulk pinning might play a role even in the liquid vortex phase.

Anisotropy of the coherence length from critical currents in the stoichiometric superconductor LiFeAs

Miniature Hall-probe arrays were used to measure the critical current densities for the three main directions of vortex motion in the stoichiometric LiFeAs superconductor. These correspond to vortices oriented along the c-axis moving parallel to the ab-plane, and to vortices in the ab-plane moving perpendicular to, and within the plane, respectively. The measurements were carried out in the low-field regime of strong vortex pinning, in which the critical current anisotropy is solely determined by the coherence length anisotropy parameter, ε_ξ. This allows extraction of ε_ξ at magnetic fields far below the upper critical field B_c2. We find that increasing magnetic field decreases the anisotropy of the coherence length.

Noise Measurement of Interacting Ferromagnetic Particles with High Resolution Hall Microprobes

We present our first experimental determination of the magnetic noise of a superspinglass made of < 1 pico-liter frozen ferrofluid. The measurements were performed with a local magnetic field sensor based on Hall microprobes operated with the spinning current technique. The results obtained, though preliminary, qualitatively agree with the theoretical predictions of Fluctuation-Dissipation theorem (FDT) violation [1].
