Model-QED-operator approach to relativistic calculations of the nuclear recoil effect in many-electron atoms and ions

A model-operator approach to fully relativistic calculations of the nuclear recoil effect on energy levels in many-electron atomic systems is worked out. The one-electron part of the model operator for treating the normal mass shift beyond the Breit approximation is represented by a sum of semilocal and nonlocal potentials. The latter ones are constructed by employing the diagonal and off-diagonal matrix elements rigorously evaluated for hydrogenlike ions to first order in the electron-to-nucleus mass ratio. The specific mass shift beyond the lowest-order relativistic approximation has a form which can be directly employed in calculations. The capabilities of the method are probed by comparison of its predictions with the results of ab initio QED calculations. The proposed operator can be easily incorporated into any relativistic calculation based on the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit Hamiltonian.

Ground-state $g$ factor of highly charged $^{229}$Th ions: an access to the M1 transition probability between the isomeric and ground nuclear states

A method is proposed to determine the $M1$ nuclear transition amplitude and hence the lifetime of the "nuclear clock transition" between the low-lying ($\sim 8$ eV) first isomeric state and the ground state of $^{229}$Th from a measurement of the ground-state $g$ factor of few-electron $^{229}$Th ions. As a tool, the effect of nuclear hyperfine mixing (NHM) in highly charged $^{229}$Th-ions such as $^{229}$Th$^{89+}$ or $^{229}$Th$^{87+}$ is utilized. The ground-state-only $g$-factor measurement would also provide first experimental evidence of NHM in atomic ions. Combining the measurements for H-, Li-, and B-like $^{229}$Th ions has a potential to improve the initial result for a single charge state and to determine the nuclear magnetic moment to a higher accuracy than that of the currently accepted value. The calculations include relativistic, interelectronic-interaction, QED, and nuclear effects.

Ionization potentials and electron affinities of Rg, Cn, Nh, and Fl superheavy elements

The successive ionization potentials (IPs) and electron affinities (EAs) for superheavy elements with $111 \leq Z \leq 114$, namely, Rg, Cn, Nh, and Fl are reexamined using the relativistic Fock-space coupled-cluster method with nonperturbative single (S), double (D), and triple (T) cluster amplitudes (FS-CCSDT). For the most of considered quantities, the triple-amplitude contributions turn out to be important. The Breit and frequency-dependent Breit corrections are evaluated by means of the configuration-interaction method. The quantum-electrodynamics corrections to the IPs and EAs are taken into account within the model-QED-operator approach. The obtained results are within 0.10 eV uncertainty.

Model-QED operator for superheavy elements

The model-QED-operator approach [Phys. Rev. A 88, 012513 (2013)] to calculations of the radiative corrections to binding and transition energies in atomic systems is extended to the range of nuclear charges $110 \leqslant Z \leqslant 170$. The self-energy part of the model operator is represented by a nonlocal potential based on diagonal and off-diagonal matrix elements of the ab initio self-energy operator with the Dirac-Coulomb wave functions. The vacuum-polarization part consists of the Uehling contribution which is readily computed for an arbitrary nuclear-charge distribution and the Wichmann-Kroll contribution represented in terms of matrix elements similarly to the self-energy part. Performance of the method is studied by comparing the model-QED-operator predictions with the results of ab initio calculations. The model-QED operator can be conveniently incorporated in any numerical approach based on the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit Hamiltonian to account for the QED effects in a wide variety of superheavy elements.

Stimulated vacuum emission and photon absorption in strong electromagnetic fields

According to quantum electrodynamics (QED), a strong external field can make the vacuum state decay producing electron-positron pairs. Here we investigate emission of soft photons which accompanies a nonperturbative process of pair production. Our analysis is carried out within the Furry picture to first order in the fine-structure constant. It is shown that the presence of photons in the initial state gives rise to an additional (stimulated) channel of photon emission besides the pure vacuum one. On the other hand, the number of final (signal) photons includes also a negative contribution due to photon absorption within the pair production process. These contributions are evaluated and compared. To obtain quantitative predictions in the domain of realistic field parameters, we employ the WKB approach. We propose to use an optical probe photon beam, whose intensity changes as it traverses a spatial region where a strong electric component of a background laser field is present. It is demonstrated that relative intensity changes on the level of $1 \%$ can be experimentally observed once the intensity of the strong background field exceeds $10^{27}~\text{W/cm}^2$ within a large laser wavelength interval. This finding is expected to significantly support possible experimental investigations of nonlinear QED phenomena in the nonperturbative regime.

Two-photon Annihilation of Positrons with K-shell Electrons of H-like ions

The two-photon annihilation of a positron with an electron bound in the 1s state of a H-like ion is calculated within the fully relativistic QED framework. The interaction with the nucleus is treated nonperturbatively, thus allowing the calculations to be carried out for the annihilation with strongly-bound inner shells of heavy ions. Infrared divergences, appearing when one of the emitted photons approaches the low-frequency limit, are accurately eliminated from final expressions. The total cross section of the two-photon and one-photon annihilation processes are compared for a wide range of collision energies and nuclear charge numbers. It is demonstrated that the two-photon annihilation channel dominates over the one-photon channel for the low and medium-Z ions, whereas for the high-Z ions the situation reverses.

Electronic structure effects in the electron bremsstrahlung from heavy ions

A fully relativistic approach is presented for the calculation of the bremsstrahlung emitted by an electron scattered off an ionic target. The ionic target is described as a combination of an effective Coulomb potential and a finite-range potential induced by the electronic cloud of the ion. The approach allows us to investigate the influence of the electronic structure of the target on the properties of the emitted radiation. We calculate the double differential cross-section and Stokes parameters of the bremsstrahlung of an electron scattered off uranium ions in different charge states, ranging from bare to neutral uranium. Results on the high-energy endpoint of the electron bremsstrahlung from Li-like uranium ions ${\rm U}^{89+}$ are compared to the recent experimental data. For this process, it is found that taking into account the electronic structure of the target results in modification of the cross-section on the level of 14%, which can, in principle, be seen in present-day experiments.

Relativistic calculations of the chemical properties of the superheavy element with $Z=119$ and its homologues

Relativistic calculations of the electronic structure of the superheavy element of the eighth period $-$ eka-francium ($Z=119$) and its homologues, which form the group of alkali metals, are performed in the framework of the configuration-interaction method and many-body perturbation theory using the basis of the Dirac-Fock-Sturm orbitals (DFS). The obtained values of the ionization potentials, electron affinities, and root-mean-square radii are compared with the corresponding values calculated within the non-relativistic approximation. A comparison with the available experimental data and the results of previous theoretical calculations is given as well. The analysis of the obtained results indicates a significant influence of the relativistic effects for the francium and eka-francium atoms, which leads to a violation of the monotonic behaviour of the listed above chemical properties as a function of the alkaline-element atomic number. In addition, the quantum electrodynamics corrections to the ionization potentials are evaluated by employing the model Lamb-shift operator (QEDMOD).

Helium-like ions in magnetic field: application of the nonperturbative relativistic method for axially symmetric systems

Dirac equation for an electron bound by a nucleus in the presence of external axially symmetric field can be solved numerically by using the dual-kinetic-balance conditions imposed on the finite basis set (A-DKB method [Rozenbaum et al, Phys. Rev. A 89, 012514 (2014)]). We present the application of this method to describe helium-like ions exposed to homogeneous external magnetic field. The second-order Zeeman shift and the nuclear magnetic shielding constant are evaluated for the ground state, including the leading contribution of the interelectronic interaction. The A-DKB values are compared with the direct calculations by perturbation theory. The results for the nuclear magnetic shielding can serve for accurate determination of the nuclear magnetic moments. The quadratic contribution to the Zeeman effect can be relevant for high-precision measurements of the transition energies in helium-like ions.

QED corrections to the $^2P_{1/2}-{}^2P_{3/2}$ fine structure in fluorinelike ions: model Lamb shift operator approach

In [Li ${\it et \, al.}$, Phys. Rev. A ${\bf 98}$, 020502(R) (2018)] it was claimed that the model-potential computations of the Lamb shift on the $^2P_{1/2}-{}^2P_{3/2}$ fine structure in fluorinelike uranium lead to a discrepancy between theory and experiment. Later, it was reported by [Volotka ${\it et \, al.}$, Phys. Rev. A ${\bf 100}$, 010502(R) (2019)] that {\it ab initio} QED calculation, including the first-order one-electron QED contributions and the related effects of two-electron screening, yields the result which restores the agreement between theory and experiment and strongly disagrees with the model-potential Lamb shift values. In the present paper, the model Lamb shift operator [Shabaev ${\it et \, al.}$, Phys. Rev. A ${\bf 88}$, 012513 (2013)] is used to evaluate the QED effects on the $^2P_{1/2}-{}^2P_{3/2}$ fine structure in F-like ions. The calculations are performed by incorporating this operator into the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit equation employing different methods. It is demonstrated that the methods, based on including the Lamb shift operator either into the Dirac-Fock equations or into the calculations by perturbation theory, lead to the theoretical results which are in good agreement with each other and with experiment. The restriction of these results to the first order in the QED effects leads to a value which agrees with the aforementioned ${\it ab\, initio}$ QED result.

QED theory of the normal mass shift in few-electron atoms

The electron-electron interaction correction of first order in $1/Z$ to the one-electron part of the nuclear recoil effect on binding energies in atoms and ions is considered within the framework of the rigorous QED approach. The calculations to all orders in $αZ$ are performed for the $1s^2$ state in heliumlike ions and the $1s^2 2s$ and $1s^2 2p_{1/2}$ states in lithiumlike ions in the range $Z=5$--$100$. The results obtained are compared with the Breit-approximation values. The performed calculations complete a systematic treatment of the QED nuclear recoil effect up to the first order in $1/Z$. The correction obtained is combined with the previously studied two-electron part as well as the higher-order electron-correlation corrections evaluated within the Breit approximation to get the total theoretical predictions for the mass shifts.

Relativistic electron spin dynamics in a strong unipolar laser field

The behavior of an electron spin interacting with a linearly polarized laser field is analyzed. In contrast to previous considerations of the problem, the initial state of the electron represents a localized wave packet, and a spatial envelope is introduced for the laser pulse, which allows one to take into account the finite size of both objects. Special attention is paid to ultrashort pulses possessing a high degree of unipolarity. Within a classical treatment (both nonrelativistic and relativistic), proportionality between the change of the electron spin projections and the electric field area of the pulse is clearly demonstrated. We also perform calculations of the electron spin dynamics according to the Dirac equation. Evolving the electron wave function in time, we compute the mean values of the spin operator in various forms. It is shown that the classical relativistic predictions are accurately reproduced when using the Foldy-Wouthuysen operator. The same results are obtained when using the Lorentz transformation and the nonrelativistic (Pauli) spin operator in the particle's rest frame.

Strong relativistic effect on (quasi)resonance electron-capture processes in non-symmetrical heavy ion-atom collisions

(Quasi)resonance electron-capture processes in non-symmetrical $(Z_{\rm P} \simeq 2Z_{\rm T})$ heavy ion-atom collisions are studied employing a semiclassical atomic Dirac-Fock-Sturm orbital coupled-channel approach within an independent-particle model. %A special attention has been paid to study a role of the relativistic effects. Systematic calculations of the electron-capture cross sections of the target $K$-shell electrons to the $L$ subshells of the projectile have been carried out for the collisions of bare thorium $(Z_{\rm P}=90)$ and zinc $(Z_{\rm P}=30)$ nuclei with hydrogenlike ions $(Z_{\rm T}=36$-$47)$ and $(Z_{\rm T}=12$-$15)$, correspondingly. Strong relativistic effects, crucial for the case of Th$^{90+}$-Ru$^{43+}(1s)$ collisions in the low-energy regime, are found. Various one- and two-electron capture processes occurring in course of the collisions of the two-electron system Th$^{90+}$-Ru$^{42+}(1s^2)$ have been investigated in details in the wide range of collision energies $0.5$-$50$~MeV/u. The impact parameter dependencies of the double electron-capture processes are also presented. Our study demonstrates a very significant role of the relativistic effects for the processes, which becomes crucial in the low-energy regime.

Bremsstrahlung from twisted electrons in the field of heavy nuclei

We present a fully relativistic calculation of the bremsstrahlung emitted by twisted electrons propagating in the field of bare heavy nuclei. The electron-nucleus interaction is accounted for to all orders in the nuclear binding strength parameter $αZ$, thus allowing us to investigate the bremsstrahlung in a strong field, where the effects of the "twistedness" are expected to be most pronounced. To explore these effects, we study the angular and polarization properties of the photons emitted in course of the inelastic twisted electrons scattering by the gold target. The influence of the kinematic parameters of the incident electrons on the double-differential cross section and the degree of the linear polarization is also discussed.

Interelectronic-interaction contribution to the nuclear recoil effect on the $g$ factor of boronlike ions

The nuclear recoil effect on the ground-state $g$ factor of highly charged boronlike ions is considered within the relativistic framework. The interelectronic-interaction contribution is evaluated within the Breit approximation employing two independent approaches: the second-order perturbation theory and the configuration-interaction Dirac-Fock-Sturm method. The uncertainty of the nuclear recoil $g$-factor contributions is significantly reduced, especially for low- and middle-$Z$ ions.

QED calculations of the nuclear recoil effect on the bound-electron $g$ factor

Fully relativistic approach is applied to evaluation of the nuclear recoil effect on the bound-electron $g$ factor in hydrogenlike ions to first order in the electron-to-nucleus mass ratio $m/M$ and to all orders in $αZ$. The calculations are performed in the range $1 \leqslant Z \leqslant 20$ for the $g$ factors of $1s$, $2s$, $2p_{1/2}$, and $2p_{3/2}$ states. The $αZ$-dependence of the nontrivial QED recoil contribution as a function of $Z$ is studied.

Relativistic calculation of the nuclear recoil effect on the $g$ factor of the $^2P_{3/2}$ state in highly charged B-like ions

The nuclear recoil effect on the $^2 P_{3/2}$-state $g$ factor of B-like ions is calculated to first order in the electron-to-nucleus mass ratio $m/M$ in the range $Z=18$--$92$. The calculations are performed by means of the $1/Z$ perturbation theory. Within the independent-electron approximation, the one- and two-electron recoil contributions are evaluated to all orders in the parameter $αZ$ by employing a fully relativistic approach. The interelectronic-interaction correction of first order in $1/Z$ is treated within the Breit approximation. Higher orders in $1/Z$ are partially taken into account by incorporating the screening potential into the zeroth-order Hamiltonian. The most accurate to date theoretical predictions for the nuclear recoil contribution to the bound-electron $g$ factor are obtained.

Electron-positron pair production in external electric fields varying both in space and time

The Schwinger mechanism of electron-positron pair production in the presence of strong external electric fields is analyzed numerically for the case of one- and two-dimensional field configurations where the external field depends both on time and one spatial coordinate. In order to provide this analysis, a new efficient numerical approach is developed. The number of particles created is obtained numerically and also compared with the analytical results for several exactly solvable one-dimensional backgrounds. For the case of two-dimensional field configurations the effects of the spatial finiteness are examined, which confirms their importance and helps us to attest our approach further. The corresponding calculations are also performed for several more interesting and nontrivial combinations of temporal and spatial inhomogeneities. Finally, we discuss the case of a spatially periodic external field when the approach is particularly productive. The method employed is described in detail.

Nuclear recoil corrections to the Lamb shift of hydrogen and light hydrogen-like ions

Accurate calculations of the nuclear recoil effect to the Lamb shift of hydrogen-like atoms are presented. Numerical results are reported for the $ns$ states with $n \leq 5$ and for the $2p_{1/2}$ and $2p_{3/2}$ states. The calculations are performed to the first order in the electron-nucleus mass ratio and to all orders in the nuclear binding strength parameter $Zα$ (where $Z$ is the nuclear charge number and $α$ is the fine structure constant). The obtained results provide accurate predictions for the higher-order remainder beyond the known $Zα$-expansion terms. In the case of hydrogen, the remainder was found to be much larger than anticipated. This result resolves the previously reported disagreement between the numerical all-order and the analytical $Zα$-expansion approaches for the nuclear recoil effect in the hydrogen Lamb shift.

QED shifts in multivalent heavy ions

The quantum electrodynamics (QED) corrections are directly incorporated into the most accurate treatment of the correlation corrections for ions with complex electronic structure of interest to metrology and tests of fundamental physics. We compared the performance of four different QED potentials for various systems to access the accuracy of QED calculations and to make prediction of highly charged ion properties urgently needed for planning future experiments. We find that all four potentials give consistent and reliable results for ions of interest. For the strongly bound electrons the nonlocal potentials are more accurate than the local potential.

Electron-positron pair creation in low-energy collisions of heavy bare nuclei

A new method for calculations of electron-positron pair-creation probabilities in low-energy heavy-ion collisions is developed. The approach is based on the propagation of all one-electron states via the numerical solving of the time-dependent Dirac equation in the monopole approximation. The electron wave functions are represented as finite sums of basis functions constructed from B-splines using the dual-kinetic-balance technique. The calculations of the created particle numbers and the positron energy spectra are performed for the collisions of bare nuclei at the energies near the Coulomb barrier with the Rutherford trajectory and for different values of the nuclear charge and the impact parameter. To examine the role of the spontaneous pair creation the collisions with a modified velocity and with a time delay are also considered. The obtained results are compared with the previous calculations and the possibility of observation of the spontaneous pair creation is discussed.

Many-electron QED corrections to the g factor of lithiumlike ions

A rigorous QED evaluation of the two-photon exchange corrections to the g factor of lithiumlike ions is presented. The screened self-energy corrections are calculated for the intermediate-$Z$ region and its accuracy for the high-$Z$ region is essentially improved in comparison with that of previous calculations. As a result, the theoretical accuracy of the g factor of lithiumlike ions is significantly increased. The theoretical prediction obtained for the g factor of $^{28}$Si$^{11+}$ ${\rm g}_{\rm th} = 2.000\,889\,892(8)$ is in an excellent agreement with the corresponding experimental value ${\rm g}_{\rm exp} = 2.000\,889\,889\,9(21)$ [A. Nuclear recoil effect in the Lamb shift of light hydrogen-like atoms

We report high-precision calculations of the nuclear recoil effect to the Lamb shift of hydrogen-like atoms to the first order in the electron-nucleus mass ratio and to all orders in the nuclear binding strength parameter $Zα$. The results are in excellent agreement with the known terms of the $Zα$ expansion and allow an accurate identification of the nonperturbative higher-order remainder. For hydrogen, the higher-order remainder was found to be much larger than anticipated. This result resolves the long-standing disagreement between the numerical all-order and the analytical $Zα$-expansion approaches to the recoil effect and completely removes the second-largest theoretical uncertainty in the hydrogen Lamb shift of the $1S$ and $2S$ states.

Ab initio QED calculations of the ground-state binding energies of berylliumlike ions are performed for the wide range of the nuclear charge number: Z=18-96. The calculations are carried out in the framework of the extended Furry picture starting with three different types of the screening potential. The rigorous QED calculations up to the second order of the perturbation theory are combined with the third- and higher-order electron-correlation contributions obtained within the Breit approximation by the use of the large-scale configuration-interaction Dirac-Fock-Sturm method. Target effects in negative-continuum assisted dielectronic recombination

The process of recombination of a quasi-free electron into a bound state of an initially bare nucleus with the simultaneous creation of a bound-electron--free-positron pair is investigated. This process is called the negative-continuum assisted dielectronic recombination (NCDR). In a typical experimental setup, the initial electron is not free but bound in a light atomic target. In the present work, we study the effects of the atomic target on the single and double-differential cross sections of the positron production in the NCDR process. The calculations are performed within the relativistic framework based on QED theory, with accounting for the electron-electron interaction to first order in perturbation theory. We demonstrate how the momentum distribution of the target electrons removes the non-physical singularity of the differential cross section which occurs for the initially free and monochromatic electrons.

On the keV sterile neutrino search in electron capture

A joint effort of cryogenic microcalorimetry (CM) and high-precision Penning-trap mass spectrometry (PT-MS) in investigating atomic orbital electron capture (EC) can shed light on the possible existence of heavy sterile neutrinos with masses from 0.5 to 100 keV. Sterile neutrinos are expected to perturb the shape of the atomic de-excitation spectrum measured by CM after a capture of the atomic orbital electrons by a nucleus. This effect should be observable in the ratios of the capture probabilities from different orbits. The sensitivity of the ratio values to the contribution of sterile neutrinos strongly depends on how accurately the mass difference between the parent and the daughter nuclides of EC-transitions can be measured by, e.g., PT-MS. A comparison of such probability ratios in different isotopes of a certain chemical element allows one to exclude many systematic uncertainties and thus could make feasible a determination of the contribution of sterile neutrinos on a level below 1%. Several electron capture transitions suitable for such measurements are discussed.

Parity nonconservation effect in the resonance elastic electron scattering on heavy He-like ions

We investigate the parity nonconservation effect in the elastic scattering of polarized electrons on heavy He-like ions, being initially in the ground state. The enhancement of the parity violation is achieved by tuning the energy of the incident electron in resonance with quasidegenerate doubly-excited states of the corresponding Li-like ion. We consider two possible scenarios. In the first one we assume that the polarization of the scattered electron is measured, while in the second one it is not detected.

Relativistic calculations of the ground state energies and the critical distances for one-electron homonuclear quasi-molecules

The ground-state energies of one-electron homonuclear quasi-molecules for the nuclear charge number in the range Z=1-100 at the "chemical" distances R= 2/Z (in a.u.) are calculated. The calculations are performed for both point- and extended-charge nucleus cases using the Dirac-Fock-Sturm approach with the basis functions constructed from the one-center Dirac-Sturm orbitals. The critical distances R_cr, at which the ground-state level reaches the edge of the negative-energy Dirac continuum, are calculated for homonuclear quasi-molecules in the range: Z=85-100. Dual Kinetic Balance Approach to the Dirac Equation for Axially Symmetric Systems: Application to Static and Time-Dependent Fields

Dual kinetic balance (DKB) technique was previously developed to eliminate spurious states in the finite-basis-set-based solution of the Dirac equation in central fields. In the present paper, it is extended to the Dirac equation for systems with axial symmetry. The efficiency of the method is demonstrated by the calculation of the energy spectra of hydrogenlike ions in presence of static uniform electric or magnetic fields. Experimental access to higher-order Zeeman effects by precision spectroscopy of highly charged ions in a Penning trap

We present an experimental concept and setup for laser-microwave double-resonance spectroscopy of highly charged ions in a Penning trap. Such spectroscopy allows a highly precise measurement of the Zeeman splittings of fine- and hyperfine-structure levels due the magnetic field of the trap. We have performed detailed calculations of the Zeeman effect in the framework of quantum electrodynamics of bound states as present in such highly charged ions. We find that apart from the linear Zeeman effect, second- and third-order Zeeman effects also contribute to the splittings on a level of 10^-4 and 10^-8, respectively, and hence are accessible to a determination within the achievable spectroscopic resolution of the ARTEMIS experiment currently in preparation.

A new approach for solving the time-dependent two-center Dirac equation is presented. The method is based on using the finite basis set of cubic Hermite splines on a two-dimensional lattice. The Dirac equation is treated in rotating reference frame. The collision of U92+ (as a projectile) and U91+ (as a target) is considered at energy E_lab=6 MeV/u. The charge transfer probabilities are calculated for different values of the impact parameter. The obtained results are compared with the previous calculations [I. I. Tupitsyn et al., Phys. Rev. A 82, 042701 (2010)], where a method based on atomic-like Dirac-Sturm orbitals was employed. This work can provide a new tool for investigation of quantum electrodynamics effects in heavy-ion collisions near the supercritical regime.

Q value and half-life of double-electron capture in Os-184

Os-184 has been excluded as a promising candidate for the search of neutrinoless double-electron capture. High-precision mass measurements with the Penning-trap mass spectrometer TRIGA-TRAP resulted in a marginal resonant enhancement with = -8.89(58) keV excess energy to the 1322.152(22) keV 0+ excited state in W-184. State-of-the-art energy density functional calculations are applied for the evaluation of the nuclear matrix elements to the excited states predicting a strong suppression due to the large deformation of mother and daughter states. The half-life of the transition in Os-184 exceeds T_{1/2} > 1.3 10^{29} years for an effective neutrino mass of 1 eV.

The rigorous calculation of the vacuum-polarization screening corrections to the hyperfine splitting in Li-like bismuth is presented. The two-electron diagrams with electric and magnetic vacuum-polarization loops are evaluated to all orders in alpha*Z, including the Wichmann-Kroll contributions. This improves the accuracy of the theoretical prediction for the specific difference of the hyperfine splitting values of H- and Li-like bismuth.

Parity nonconservation effect in resonance recombination of polarized electrons with heavy hydrogenlike ions

Parity nonconservation (PNC) effect in recombination of a polarized electron with a heavy H-like ion in case of resonance with a doubly excited state of the corresponding He-like ion is studied. It is assumed that photons of the energy corresponding to the one-photon decay of the doubly excited state into the $2^1S_0$ or the $2^3P_0$ state are detected at a given angle with respect to the incident electron momentum. Calculations are performed for heliumlike thorium ($Z = 90$) and gadolinium ($Z = 64$), where the $2^1S_0$ and $2^3P_0$ levels are near to cross and, therefore, the PNC effect is strongly enhanced.

Probing the nuclide 180W for neutrinoless double-electron capture exploration

The mass difference of the nuclides 180W and 180Hf has been measured with the Penning-trap mass spectrometer SHIPTRAP to investigate 180W as a possible candidate for the search for neutrinoless doubleelectron capture. The Q-value was measured to 143.20(27)keV. This value in combination with the calculations of the atomic electron wave functions and other parameters results in a half-life of the 0+ \rightarrow 0+ ground-state to ground-state double-electron capture transition of approximately 5\cdot10E27 years/<m_ee[eV]>^2.

Relativistic calculations of the K-K charge transfer and K-vacancy production probabilities in low-energy ion-atom collisions

The previously developed technique for evaluation of charge-transfer and electron-excitation processes in low-energy heavy-ion collisions [I.I. Tupitsyn et al., Phys. Rev. A 82, 042701(2010)] is extended to collisions of ions with neutral atoms. The method employs the active electron approximation, in which only the active electron participates in the charge transfer and excitation processes while the passive electrons provide the screening DFT potential. The time-dependent Dirac wave function of the active electron is represented as a linear combination of atomic-like Dirac-Fock-Sturm orbitals, localized at the ions (atoms). The screening DFT potential is calculated using the overlapping densities of each ions (atoms), derived from the atomic orbitals of the passive electrons. The atomic orbitals are generated by solving numerically the one-center Dirac-Fock and Dirac-Fock-Sturm equations by means of a finite-difference approach with the potential taken as the sum of the exact reference ion (atom) Dirac-Fock potential and of the Coulomb potential from the other ion within the monopole approximation. The method developed is used to calculate the K-K charge transfer and K-vacancy production probabilties for the Ne$(1s^2 2s^2 2p^6)$ -- F$^{8+}(1s)$ collisions at the F$^{8+}(1s)$ projectile energies 130 keV/u and 230 keV/u. The obtained results are compared with experimental data and other theoretical calculations. The K-K charge transfer and K-vacancy production probabilities are also calculated for the Xe -- Xe$^{53+}(1s)$ collision.

Test of many-electron QED effects in the hyperfine splitting of heavy high-Z ions

A rigorous evaluation of the two-photon exchange corrections to the hyperfine structure in lithiumlike heavy ions is presented. As a result, the theoretical accuracy of the specific difference between the hyperfine splitting values of H- and Li-like Bi ions is significantly improved. This opens a possibility for the stringent test of the many-electron QED effects on a few percent level in the strongest electromagnetic field presently available in experiments.

Parity nonconservation effect with laser-induced 2^3S_1 - 2^1S_0 transition in heavy heliumlike ions

The parity nonconservation (PNC) effect on the laser-induced 2^3S_1 - 2^1S_0 transition in heavy heliumlike ions is considered. A simple analytical formula for the PNC correction to the cross section is derived for the case, when the opposite-parity 2^1S_0 and 2^3P_0 states are almost degenerate and, therefore, the PNC effect is strongly enhanced. Numerical results are presented for heliumlike gadolinium and thorium, which seem most promising candidates for such kind of experiments. In both Gd and Th cases the photon energy required will be anticipated with a high-energy laser built at GSI. Alternatively, it can be gained with ultraviolet lasers utilizing relativistic Doppler tuning at FAIR facilities in Darmstadt.

Relativistic calculations of the charge-transfer probabilities and cross sections for low-energy collisions of H-like ions with bare nuclei

A new method for solving the time-dependent two-center Dirac equation is developed. The time-dependent Dirac wave function is represented as a sum of atomic-like Dirac-Sturm orbitals, localized at the ions. The atomic orbitals are obtained by solving numerically the finite-difference one-center Dirac and Dirac-Sturm equations with the potential which is the sum of the exact reference-nucleus potential and a monopole-approximation potential from the other nucleus. An original procedure to calculate the two-center integrals with these orbitals is proposed. The approach is tested by calculations of the charge transfer and ionization cross sections for the H(1s)--proton collisions at proton energies from 1 keV to 100 keV. The obtained results are compared with related experimental and other theoretical data. To investigate the role of the relativistic effects, the charge transfer cross sections for the Ne^{9+}(1s)--Ne^{10+} (at energies from 0.1 to 10 MeV/u) and U^{91+}(1s)--U^{92+} (at energies from 6 to 10 MeV/u) collisions are calculated in both relativistic and nonrelativistic cases.

The calculation of the relativistic recoil effect is performed to all orders in 1/Z. The interelectronic-interaction correction to the transition energies beyond the two-photon exchange level is evaluated to all orders in 1/Z within the Breit approximation. The evaluation is carried out employing the large-scale configuration-interaction Dirac-Fock-Sturm method. The rigorous calculation of the complete gauge invariant sets of the screened self-energy and vacuum-polarization diagrams is performed utilizing a local screening potential as the zeroth-order approximation. The theoretical predictions for the 2p_j-2s transition energies are compiled and compared with available experimental data in the range of the nuclear charge number Z=10-60.

Polarization studies on the two-step radiative recombination of highly-charged, heavy ions

The radiative recombination of a free electron into an excited state of a bare, high-Z ion is studied, together with its subsequent decay, within the framework of the density matrix theory and Dirac's relativistic equation. Special attention is paid to the polarization and angular correlations between the recombination and the decay photons. In order to perform a systematic analysis of these correlations the general expression for the double-differential recombination cross section is obtained by making use of the resonance approximation. Based on this expression, detailed computations for the linear polarization of x-ray photons emitted in the (e, 2γ) two-step recombination of uranium ions U^92+ are carried out for a wide range of projectile energies.

QED corrections to the parity-nonconserving 6s-7s amplitude in $^{133}$Cs

The complete gauge-invariant set of the one-loop QED corrections to the parity-nonconserving 6s-7s amplitude in $^{133}$Cs is evaluated to all orders in $αZ$ using a local version of the Dirac-Hartree-Fock potential. The calculations are peformed in both length and velocity gauges for the absorbed photon. The total binding QED correction is found to be -0.27(3)%, which differs from previous evaluations of this effect. The weak charge of $^{133}$Cs, derived using two most accurate values of the vector transition polarizability $β$, is $Q_W=-72.57(46)$ for $β= 26.957(51) a_{\rm B}^3$ and $Q_W=-73.09(54)$ for $β= 27.15(11)a_{\rm B}^3 $. The first value deviates by $1.1σ$ from the prediction of the Standard Model, while the second one is in perfect agreement with it.

Virial relations for the Dirac equation and their applications to calculations of H-like atoms

Virial relations for the Dirac equation in a central field and their applications to calculations of H-like atoms are considered. It is demonstrated that using these relations allows one to evaluate various average values for a hydrogenlike atom. The corresponding relations for non-diagonal matrix elements provide an effective method for analytical evaluations of infinite sums that occur in calculations based on using the reduced Coulomb-Green function. In particular, this method can be used for calculations of higher-order corrections to the hyperfine splitting and to the g factor in hydrogenlike atoms.

Recoil correction to the bound-electron g factor in H-like atoms to all orders in $αZ$

The nuclear recoil correction to the bound-electron g factor in H-like atoms is calculated to first order in $m/M$ and to all orders in $αZ$. The calculation is performed in the range Z=1-100. A large contribution of terms of order $(αZ)^5$ and higher is found. Even for hydrogen, the higher-order correction exceeds the $(αZ)^4$ term, while for uranium it is above the leading $(αZ)^2$ correction.
