Observation of a Jump Like Transition from Fast to Normal Kinetics of Facets for Free Growing Helium Crystals

The growth kinetics is studied of free-growing helium crystals within the temperature range 0.5-0.83 K and supersaturations to 10 mbar. For the pressure supersaturations above 0.5 mbar, numerous drastic changes are observed in the growth kinetics for all crystalline facets from the normal and slow kinetics to the anomalously high or burst-like one. It is found for the first time that the anomalous to normal transition in the facet growth kinetics occurs in a jump like manner within a time 80 μs interval of the measurement record.

Observation of the "burst-like growth" regime for the $^4$He crystals nucleated in a metastable liquid

The "burst-like growth" regime is observed for the $^4$He crystals with the growth defects. The observation has confirmed the hypothesis for the same physical mechanisms responsible for the transition of the crystalline facets to the state of abnormally fast growth at high and low temperatures. The relaxation process of the kinetic growth coefficient is found to be similar to the relaxation of the elastic modules of the crystal at the end of the fast growth stage. The kinetic growth coefficients are determined at the stages of fast and slow growth. The crossover from the fast to slow kinetics of crystal facet growth is found to be drastic

Anomaly of the Internal Friction in the Helium Crystals Grown in the Burst-like Growth Mode

The internal friction in the crystals grown in two modes, namely, slow and anomalously fast (burst-like growth) modes, is measured in the temperature range 0.49-0.75K at a frequency of about 75kHz. An additional contribution to the damping decrement and softening of the dynamic modulus are detected, and their relaxation to equilibrium values at a time constant of about 3ms is observed. Possible origins of this effect are discussed.

Quantum crystal oscillations in a superfluid liquid

We study the hydrodynamics of quantum 4He crystal oscillations in a superfluid liquid with involving the dynamics of atomically rough surfaces. It is shown that, due to enhancement of the kinetic growth coefficient as the temperature lowers, the reaction force of the liquid applied to the 4He crystal changes its character from the inertial to the viscous one vanishing as T->0. The model is confirmed by the experiments on the oscillations of the 4He crystal within the temperature range 0.54 - 1.43 K at frequencies 484 and 211 Hz. New type of a hydrodynamic instability is found. The instability occurs provided that the oscillation amplitude of the velocity becomes higher than ~3 cm/s.

Rayleigh-Taylor instability of crystallization waves at the superfluid-solid 4He interface

At the superfluid-solid 4He interface there exist crystallization waves having much in common with gravitational-capillary waves at the interface between two normal fluids. The Rayleigh-Taylor instability is an instability of the interface which can be realized when the lighter fluid is propelling the heavier one. We investigate here the analogues of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability for the superfluid-solid 4He interface. In the case of a uniformly accelerated interface the instability occurs only for a growing solid phase when the magnitude of the acceleration exceeds some critical value independent of the surface stiffness. For the Richtmyer-Meshkov limiting case of an impulsively accelerated interface, the onset of instability does not depend on the sign of the interface acceleration. In both cases the effect of crystallization wave damping is to reduce the perturbation growth-rate of the Taylor unstable interface.
