Equivalent characterizations of the spectra of graphs and applications to measures of distance-regularity

As it is well known, the spectrum sp Γ {\rm sp\,} Γ (of the adjacency matrix AA) of a graph ΓΓ, with dd distinct eigenvalues other than its spectral radius λ0λ_0, usually provides a lot of information about the structure of GG. Moreover, from sp Γ{\rm sp\,}Γ we can define the so-called predistance polynomials p0,…,pd∈Rd[x]p_0,\ldots,p_d\in {\mathbb R}_d[x], with dgr pi=i{\rm dgr\,} p_i=i, i=0,…,di=0,\ldots,d, which are orthogonal with respect to the scalar product ⟨f,g⟩Γ=1ntr (f(A)g(A))\langle f, g\rangle_Γ =\frac{1}{n}{\rm tr\,}(f(A)g(A)) and normalized in such a way that ∥pi∥Γ2=pi(λ0)\|p_i\|_Γ^2=p_i(λ_0). They can be seen as a generalization for any graph of the distance polynomials of a distance-regular graph. Going further, we consider the preintersection numbers ξijhξ_{ij}^h for i,j,h∈{0,…,d}i,j,h\in\{0,\ldots,d\}, which generalize the intersection numbers of a distance-regular graph, and they are the Fourier coefficients of pipjp_ip_j in terms of the basis {ph}0≤h≤d\{p_h\}_{0\le h\le d}. The aim of this paper is to show that, for any graph ΓΓ, the information contained in its spectrum, predistance polynomials, and preintersection numbers is equivalent. Also, we give some characterizations of distance-regularity which are based on the above concepts. For instance, we comment upon the so-called spectral excess theorem stating that a connected regular graph GG is distance-regular if and only if its spectral excess, which is the value of pdp_d at λ0λ_0, equals the average excess, that is, the mean of the numbers of vertices at extremal distance dd from every vertex.

Distance mean-regular graphs

We introduce the concept of distance mean-regular graph, which can be seen as a generalization of both vertex-transitive and distance-regular graphs. Let ΓΓ be a graph with vertex set VV, diameter DD, adjacency matrix AA, and adjacency algebra A{\cal A}. Then, ΓΓ is distancedistance meanmean-regularregular when, for a given u∈Vu\in V, the averages of the intersection numbers pijh(u,v)=∣Γi(u)∩Γj(v)∣p_{ij}^h(u,v)=|Γ_i(u)\cap Γ_j(v)| (number of vertices at distance ii from uu and distance jj from vv) computed over all vertices vv at a given distance h∈{0,1,…,D}h\in \{0,1,\ldots,D\} from uu, do not depend on uu. In this work we study some properties and characterizations of these graphs. For instance, it is shown that a distance mean-regular graph is always distance degree-regular, and we give a condition for the converse to be also true. Some algebraic and spectral properties of distance mean-regular graphs are also investigated. We show that, for distance mean regular-graphs, the role of the distance matrices of distance-regular graphs is played for the so-called distance mean-regular matrices. These matrices are computed from a sequence of orthogonal polynomials evaluated at the adjacency matrix of ΓΓ and, hence, they generate a subalgebra of A{\cal A}. Some other algebras associated to distance mean-regular graphs are also characterized.
