Catalog of averaged magnetic phase curves of stars

The second version of the catalog contains information about 275 stars of different types. During the time that has elapsed since the creation of the first catalog, situation fundamentally changed primarily due to the significant increase of accuracy of magnetic fields (MF) measurements. Up to now global magnetic field were discoverd and measured in stars of many types and their behavior partially was studied. Magnetic behavior of Ap Bp stars is the most thoroughly studied. The catalog contains information about 182 such objects. The main goals for the construction of the catalog are: 1. Review and summarize our kowledge about magnetic behavior of different types of stars. 2. The whole data are uniformly presented and processed which will allow one to perform statistical analysis of the variability of the (longitudinal) magnetic fields of stars. 3. The informations are presented in the most convenient form for testing different theoretical models of different kind. 4. The catalog will be useful for the development of observational programs.

On the evolution of the magnetic field of Ap star $α^2$ CVn

New high-precision measurements of the longitudinal magnetic field of Ap stars suggest the existence of secular intrinsic variations of the global magnetic field in some stars. We argue that such changes are apparent in the Ap star $α^2$ CVn in the time scale of $\sim$ 10 years, which results from the analysis of literature data. Therefore, such an observation implies, that the rate of magnetic field evolution of Ap stars is much higher than was previously thought.

Physical variability of the magnetic field of some stars

Apparent variability of the longitudinal magnetic fields in most stars is caused by rotation, which quantitavely changes projection of the magnetic field configuration on the line of sight. This is a purely geometrical effect and is not related to possible intrinsic changes of the field. In some stars we observe changes of the magnetic phase curve with time, which means that parameters of the magnetic field change. Such changes occur in some objects in time scale of several years, which is few orders of magnitude faster than predicted by theory. Those changes imply need for improvement of the theory of magnetic field evolution. We demonstrate changes of the rotational phase curves in few stars.

33 Lib - analog of gamma Equ

In this paper we study periodic variability of the magnetic field in the Ap star 33 Lib. We found that its most probable period equals 83.5 years. There exist also possible shorter periods: 11.036 days, 7.649 days and 4.690 days. Analysis of the magnetic behavior of 33 Lib allows us to conclude, that the star shows the second longest period the slow rotator gamma Equ, the latter star with the period of 97 years.

Periods of magnetic field variations in the Ap star $γ$ Equulei (HD 201601)

This paper presents a series of 95 new measurements of the longitudinal (effective) magnetic field $B_e$ of the Ap star $γ$ Equ (HD 201601). Observations were obtained at the coudé focus of the 1-m reflector at the Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO RAS) in Russia over a time period of 4190 days (more than 11 years). We compiled a long record of $B_e$ points, adding our measurements to all published data. The time series of magnetic data consists of 395 $B_e$ points extending for 24488 days, or over 67 years. Various methods of period determination were examined for the case in which the length of the observed time series is rather short and amounts only to ~69 percent of the period. We argue that the fitting of a sine wave to the observed $B_e$ points by least squares yields the most reliable period in the case of $γ$ Equ. Therefore, the best period for long-term magnetic variations of $γ$ Equ, and hence the rotational period, is $P_{\rm rot}=35462.5 \pm 1149$ days $= 97.16 \pm 3.15$ years.

Observed variations of the global longitudinal magnetic fields of stars

Actually there exist 218 stars with measured phase curves of the longitudinal (effective) magnetic field B_e. In that group 172 objects are classified as magnetic chemically peculiar stars (mCP). Remaining objects are stars of various spectral types, from the most massive hot Of? supergiants to low mass red dwarfs and stars with planets. This paper aims to review briefly properties of the observed magnetic field in various types of stars.

Variability of the Ap Star HD9996

We present here new measurements of the longitudinal magnetic field (B_e) in the binary system HD9996, where the primary companion is an Ap star. Series of 63 B_e observations was obtained in years 1994-2011 with the 1m optical telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory (Russia). New magnetic data allowed us to refine the long-term magnetic period of HD9996 to P_mag=21.8 years. Compilation of archival photometric data showed the existence of long term variations of HD9996 in time scale of 22-23 yr consistent with P_mag}. We identify P_mag with the precession period of the primary Ap star and summarize search for a short-term rotational period and the rotational line broadening in this star.

CP and related phenomena in the context of Stellar Evolution

We review the interaction in intermediate and high mass stars between their evolution and magnetic and chemical properties. We describe the theory of Ap-star `fossil' fields, before touching on the expected secular diffusive processes which give rise to evolution of the field. We then present recent results from a spectropolarimetric survey of Herbig Ae/Be stars, showing that magnetic fields of the kind seen on the main-sequence already exist during the pre-main sequence phase, in agreement with fossil field theory, and that the origin of the slow rotation of Ap/Bp stars also lies early in the pre-main sequence evolution; we also present results confirming a lack of stars with fields below a few hundred gauss. We then seek which macroscopic motions compete with atomic diffusion in determining the surface abundances of AmFm stars. While turbulent transport and mass loss, in competition with atomic diffusion, are both able to explain observed surface abundances, the interior abundance distribution is different enough to potentially lead to a test using asterosismology. Finally we review progress on the turbulence-driving and mixing processes in stellar radiative zones.

Statistics of Magnetic Fields for OB Stars

Based on an analysis of the catalog of magnetic fields, we have investigated the statistical properties of the mean magnetic fields for OB stars. We show that the mean effective magnetic field ${\cal B}$ of a star can be used as a statistically significant characteristic of its magnetic field. No correlation has been found between the mean magnetic field strength ${\cal B}$ and projected rotational velocity of OB stars, which is consistent with the hypothesis about a fossil origin of the magnetic field. We have constructed the magnetic field distribution function for B stars, $F({\cal B})$, that has a power-law dependence on ${\cal B}$ with an exponent of $\approx -1.82$. We have found a sharp decrease in the function $F({\cal B})$F for ${\cal B}\lem 400 G$ that may be related to rapid dissipation of weak stellar surface magnetic fields.
