Approaching ideal graphene: The structure of hydrogen-intercalated graphene on 6H-SiC(0001)

We measure the adsorption height of hydrogen-intercalated quasi-free-standing monolayer graphene on the (0001) face of 6H silicon carbide by the normal incidence x-ray standing wave technique. A density functional calculation for the full ($6 \sqrt{3} \times 6 \sqrt{3}$)-R30$^\circ$ unit cell, based on a van der Waals corrected exchange correlation functional, finds a purely physisorptive adsorption height in excellent agreement with experiments, a very low buckling of the graphene layer, a very homogeneous electron density at the interface and the lowest known adsorption energy per atom for graphene on any substrate. A structural comparison to other graphenes suggests that hydrogen intercalated graphene on 6H-SiC(0001) approaches ideal graphene.

Secondary structure of Ac-Ala$_n$-LysH$^+$ polyalanine peptides ($n$=5,10,15) in vacuo: Helical or not?

The polyalanine-based peptide series Ac-Ala_n-LysH+ (n=5-20) is a prime example that a secondary structure motif which is well-known from the solution phase (here: helices) can be formed in vacuo. We here revisit this conclusion for n=5,10,15, using density-functional theory (van der Waals corrected generalized gradient approximation), and gas-phase infrared vibrational spectroscopy. For the longer molecules (n=10,15) α-helical models provide good qualitative agreement (theory vs. experiment) already in the harmonic approximation. For n=5, the lowest energy conformer is not a simple helix, but competes closely with α-helical motifs at 300K. Close agreement between infrared spectra from experiment and ab initio molecular dynamics (including anharmonic effects) supports our findings.

The Pd(100)-(SQRT(5) x SQRT(5) R27^o)-O surface oxide revisited

Combining high-resolution core-level spectroscopy (HRCLS), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations we reanalyze the Pd(100)-(SQRT(5) x SQRT(5) R27^o)-O surface oxide phase. We find that the prevalent structural model, a rumpled PdO(001) film suggested by previous low energy electron diffraction (LEED) work (M. Saidy et al., Surf. Sci. 494, L799 (2001)), is incompatible with all three employed methods. Instead, we suggest the two-dimensional film to consist of a strained PdO(101) layer on top of Pd(100). LEED intensity calculations show that this model is compatible with the experimental data of Saidy et al.
