Abnormal Bound Systems

It is taken for granted that bound systems are made of massive constituents that interact through particle exchanges (charged particles interacting via photon exchanges, quarks in elementary particles interacting via gluon exchanges, and nucleons in nuclei interacting via meson exchanges). However, as was recently theoretically found, there exist systems dominated by exchange particles (at least for the zero exchange masses). In these systems, the contribution of massive constituents is negligible. These systems have a relativistic nature (since they are mainly made of massless particles moving at the speed of light), and therefore, they cannot be described by the Schroedinger equation. Though these results were found so far in the simple Wick--Cutkosky model (spinless constituents interacting via the ladder of spinless massless exchanges), the physical ground for their existence seems to be rather general.

Structure and EM form factors of purely relativistic systems

The Bethe-Salpeter equation for two massive scalar particles interacting by scalar massless exchange has solutions of two types, which differ from each other by their behavior in the non-relativistic limit: the normal solutions which turn into the Coulomb ones and the "abnormal" solutions. The latter ones have no non-relativistic counterparts and disappear in the non-relativistic limit. We studied the composition of all these states. It turns out that the normal states, even for large binding energy, are dominated by two massive particles. Whereas, the contribution of the two-body sector into the abnormal states, even for small binding energy, is of the order of 1% only; they are dominated by an indefinite number of the massless particles. The elastic electromagnetic form factors for both normal and abnormal states, as well as the transition ones between them, are calculated.

Three-boson bound states in Minkowski space with contact interactions

The structure of the three-boson bound state in Minkowski space is studied for a model with contact interaction. The Faddeev-Bethe-Salpeter equation is solved both in Minkowski and Euclidean spaces. The results are in fair agreement for comparable quantities, like the transverse amplitude obtained when the longitudinal constituent momenta of the light-front valence wave function are integrated out. The Minkowski space solution is obtained numerically by using a recently proposed method based on the direct integration over the singularities of the propagators and interaction kernel of the four-dimensional integral equation. The complex singular structure of the Faddeev components of the Bethe-Salpeter vertex function for space and time-like momenta in an example of a Borromean system is investigated in detail. Furthermore, the transverse amplitude is studied as a mean to access the double-parton transverse momentum distribution. Following that, we show that the two-body short-range correlation contained in the valence wave function is evidenced when the pair has a large relative momentum in a back-to-back configuration, where one of the Faddeev components of the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude dominates over the others. In this situation a power-law behavior is derived and confirmed numerically.

Direct Bethe-Salpeter solutions in Minkowski space

We review a method to directly solve the Bethe-Salpeter equation in Minkowski space, both for bound and scattering states. It is based on a proper treatment of the many singularities which appear in the kernel and propagators. The off-mass shell scattering amplitude for spinless particles interacting by a one boson exchange was computed for the first time. Using our Minkowski space solutions for the initial (bound) and final (scattering) states, we calculate elastic and transition (bound to scattering state) electromagnetic form factors. The conservation of the transition electromagnetic current J.q=0, verified numerically, confirms the validity of our solutions.

Zero energy scattering calculation in Euclidean space

We show that the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the scattering amplitude in the limit of zero incident energy can be transformed into a purely Euclidean form, as it is the case for the bound states. The decoupling between Euclidean and Minkowski amplitudes is only possible for zero energy scattering observables and allows determining the scattering length from the Euclidean Bethe-Salpeter amplitude. Such a possibility strongly simplifies the numerical solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation and suggests an alternative way to compute the scattering length in Lattice Euclidean calculations without using the Luscher formalism. The derivations contained in this work were performed for scalar particles and one-boson exchange kernel. They can be generalized to the fermion case and more involved interactions.

Ab Initio Approach to the Non-Perturbative Scalar Yukawa Model

We report on the first non-perturbative calculation of the scalar Yukawa model in the single-nucleon sector up to four-body Fock sector truncation (one "scalar nucleon" and three "scalar pions"). The light-front Hamiltonian approach with a systematic non-perturbative renormalization is applied. We study the $n$-body norms and the electromagnetic form factor. We find that the one- and two-body contributions dominate up to coupling $α\approx 1.7$. As we approach the coupling $α\approx 2.2$, we discover that the four-body contribution rises rapidly and overtakes the two- and three-body contributions. By comparing with lower sector truncations, we show that the form factor converges with respect to the Fock sector expansion.

Non-Perturbative Calculation of the Scalar Yukawa Theory in Four-Body Truncation

The quenched scalar Yukawa theory is solved in the light-front Tamm-Dancoff approach including up to four constituents (one scalar nucleon, three scalar pions). The Fock sector dependent renormalization is implemented. By studying the Fock sector norms, we find that the lowest two Fock sectors dominate the state even in the large-coupling region. The one-body sector shows convergence with respect to the Fock sector truncation. However, the four-body norm exceeds the three-body norm at the coupling $α\approx 1.7$.

Transition electromagnetic form factor and current conservation in the Bethe-Salpeter approach

The transition form factor for electrodisintegration of a two-body bound system is calculated in the Bethe-Salpeter framework. For the initial (bound) and the final (scattering) states, we use our solutions of the Bethe-Salpeter equation in Minkowski space which were first obtained recently. The gauge invariance, which manifests itself in the conservation of the transition electromagnetic current Jq = 0, is studied numerically. It results from a cancellation between the plane wave and the final state interaction contributions. This cancellation takes place only if the initial bound state BS amplitude, the final scattering state and the operator of electromagnetic current are strictly consistent with each other, that is if they are found in the same dynamical framework. A reliable result for the transition form factor can be obtained in this case only.

Current conservation in electrodisintegration of a bound system in the Bethe-Salpeter approach

Using our solutions of the Bethe-Salpeter equation with OBE kernel in Minkowski space both for the bound and scattering states, we calculate the transition form factors for electrodisintegration of the bound system which determine the electromagnetic current J of this process. Special emphasis is put on verifying the gauge invariance which should manifest itself in the current conservation. We find that for any value of the momentum transfer q the contributions of the plane wave and the final state interaction to the quantity J.q cancel each other thus providing J.q=0. However, this cancellation is obtained only if the initial Bethe-Salpeter amplitude (bound state), the final one (scattering state) and the current operator are strictly consistent with each other. A reliable result for the transition form factor can be found only in this case.

Solving Bethe-Salpeter scattering state equation in Minkowski space

We present a method to directly solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation in Minkowski space, both for bound and scattering states. It is based on a proper treatment of the singularities which appear in the kernel, propagators and Bethe-Salpeter amplitude itself. The off-mass shell scattering amplitude for spinless particles interacting by a one boson exchange is computed for the first time.

Critical stability of few-body systems

When a two-body system is bound by a zero-range interaction, the corresponding three-body system -- considered in a non-relativistic framework -- collapses, that is its binding energy is unbounded from below. In a paper by J.V. Lindesay and H.P. Noyes it was shown that the relativistic effects result in an effective repulsion in such a way that three-body binding energy remains also finite, thus preventing the three-body system from collapse. Later, this property was confirmed in other works based on different versions of relativistic approaches. However, the three-body system exists only for a limited range of two-body binding energy values. For stronger two-body interaction, the relativistic three-body system still collapses. A similar phenomenon was found in a two-body systems themselves: a two-fermion system with one-boson exchange interaction in a state with zero angular momentum J=0 exists if the coupling constant does not exceed some critical value but it also collapses for larger coupling constant. For a J=1 state, it collapses for any coupling constant value. These properties are called "critical stability". This contribution aims to be a brief review of this field pioneered by H.P. Noyes.

Nonperturbative calculations in truncated Fock space in LFD

A non-perturbative approach based on the Fock decomposition of the state vector and its truncation is discussed. In order the non-perturbative renormalization procedure after truncation could eliminate infinities, it should be the sector dependent. We clarify the meaning of this procedure in a toy model. Then we demonstrate stability, relative to the increasing cutoff, of the anomalous magnetic moment found using the sector dependent renormalization scheme in Yukawa model.

Present status of the Bethe-Salpeter approach in Minkowski space

Recently developed methods allowing to find the solutions of the Bethe-Salpeter equations in Minkowski space, both for the bound and scattering states, are reviewed. For the bound states, one obtains the bound state mass and the corresponding BS amplitude. For the scattering states, the phase shifts (complex above the meson creation threshold) and the half-off-shell BS amplitude are found. Using these solutions, the elastic and transition electromagnetic form factors are calculated.

Ab initio nonperturbative calculation of physical observables in light-front dynamics. Application to the Yukawa model

We present a coherent and operational strategy to calculate, in a nonperturbative way, physical observables in light-front dynamics. This strategy is based on the decomposition of the state vector of any compound system in Fock components, and on the covariant formulation of light-front dynamics, together with the so-called Fock sector dependent renormalization scheme. We apply our approach to the calculation of the electromagnetic form factors of a fermion in the Yukawa model, in the nontrivial three-body Fock space truncation, for rather large values of the coupling constant. We find that, once the renormalization conditions are properly taken into account, the form factors do not depend on the regularization scale, when the latter is much larger than the physical masses. We then extend the Fock space by including antifermion degrees of freedom.

Three different approaches to the same interaction: the Yukawa model in nuclear physics

After a brief discussion of the meaning of the potential in quantum mechanics, we examine the results of the Yukawa model (scalar meson exchange) for the nucleon-nucleon interaction in three different dynamical frameworks: the non-relativistic dynamics of the Schrodinger equation, the relativistic quantum mechanics of the Bethe-Salpeter and Light-Front equations and the lattice solution of the Quantum Field Theory, obtained in the quenched approximation.

Nonperturbative calculation of the anomalous magnetic moment in the Yukawa model within truncated Fock space

Within the covariant formulation of light-front dynamics, we calculate the state vector of a physical fermion in the Yukawa model. The state vector is decomposed in Fock sectors and we consider the first three ones: the single constituent fermion, the constituent fermion coupled to one scalar boson, and the constituent fermion coupled to two scalar bosons. This last three-body sector generates nontrivial and nonperturbative contributions to the state vector, which are calculated numerically. Field-theoretical divergences are regularized using Pauli-Villars fermion and boson fields. Physical observables can be unambiguously deduced using a systematic renormalization scheme we have developed previously. As a first application, we consider the anomalous magnetic moment of the physical fermion.

Nonperturbative renormalization in light-front dynamics and applications

We present a general framework to calculate the properties of relativistic compound systems from the knowledge of an elementary Hamiltonian. Our framework provides a well-controlled nonperturbative calculational scheme which can be systematically improved. The state vector of a physical system is calculated in light-front dynamics. From the general properties of this form of dynamics, the state vector can be further decomposed in well-defined Fock components. In order to control the convergence of this expansion, we advocate the use of the covariant formulation of light-front dynamics. In this formulation, the state vector is projected on an arbitrary light-front plane $ω\cd x=0$ defined by a light-like four-vector $ω$. This enables us to control any violation of rotational invariance due to the truncation of the Fock expansion. We then present a general nonperturbative renormalization scheme in order to avoid field-theoretical divergences which may remain uncancelled due to this truncation. This general framework has been applied to a large variety of models. As a starting point, we consider QED for the two-body Fock space truncation and calculate the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron. We show that it coincides, in this approximation, with the well-known Schwinger term. Then we investigate the properties of a purely scalar system in the three-body approximation, where we highlight the role of antiparticle degrees of freedom. As a non-trivial example of our framework, we calculate the structure of a physical fermion in the Yukawa model, for the three-body Fock space truncation (but still without antifermion contributions). We finally show why our approach is also well-suited to describe effective field theories like chiral perturbation theory in the baryonic sector.

Proton Timelike Form Factors Near Threshold via Antiproton-Nucleus Electromagnetic Annihilation

In the reaction of the antiproton-deuteron electromagnetic annihilation pbar + d --> e+e-n the value of the invariant mass M of the (e+e-) pair can be near or below the (pbar p) mass even for enough high momentum of incident antiproton. This allows to access the proton electromagnetic form factors in the time-like region of q^2 near the (pbar p) threshold. We estimate the cross section dsigma(pbar + d --> e+e-n)/dM for an antiproton beam momentum of 1.5 GeV/c. We find that near the (pbar p) threshold this cross section is about 1 pb/MeV. The case of heavy nuclei target is also discussed. Elements of experimental feasibility are presented for the process pbar + d --> e+e-n in the context of the Panda project. We conclude that this process has a chance to be measurable at Panda.

Solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation in Minkowski space for a two fermion system

The method of solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation in Minkowski space, developed previously for spinless particles, is extended to a system of two fermions. The method is based on the Nakanishi integral representation of the amplitude and on projecting the equation on the light-front plane. The singularities in the projected two-fermion kernel are regularized without modifying the original BS amplitudes. The numerical solutions for the J=0 bound state with the scalar, pseudoscalar and massless vector exchange kernels are found. Binding energies are in close agreement with the Euclidean results. Corresponding amplitudes in Minkowski space are obtained.

Solutions of the Bethe-Salpeter equation in Minkowski space and applications to electromagnetic form factors

We present a new method for solving the two-body Bethe-Salpeter equation in Minkowski space. It is based on the Nakanishi integral representation of the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude and on subsequent projection of the equation on the light-front plane. The method is valid for any kernel given by the irreducible Feynman graphs and for systems of spinless particles or fermions. The Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes in Minkowski space are obtained. The electromagnetic form factors are computed and compared to the Euclidean results.

The method is based on the Nakanishi integral representation of the amplitude and on projecting the equation on the light-front plane. The singularities in the projected two-fermion kernel are regularized without modifying the original Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes. The numerical solutions for the J=0 bound state with the scalar, pseudoscalar and massless vector exchange kernels are found. The stability of the scalar and positronium states without vertex form factor is discussed. Binding energies are in close agreement with the Euclidean results. Corresponding amplitudes in Minkowski space are obtained.

Electromagnetic form factor via Bethe-Salpeter amplitude in Minkowski space

For a relativistic system of two scalar particles, we find the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude in Minkowski space and use it to compute the electromagnetic form factor. The comparison with Euclidean space calculation shows that the Wick rotation in the form factor integral induces errors which increase with the momentum transfer Q^2. At JLab domain (Q^2=10 GeV^2/c^2), they are about 30%. Static approximation results in an additional and more significant error. On the contrary, the form factor calculated in light-front dynamics is almost indistinguishable from the Minkowski space one.

Relativistic wave functions and energies for nonzero angular momentum states in light-front dynamics

Light-front dynamics (LFD) is a powerful approach to the theory of relativistic composite systems (hadrons in the quark models and relativistic nucleons in nuclei). Its explicitly covariant version has been recently applied with success to describe the new CEBAF/TJNAF data on the deuteron electromagnetic form factors. The solutions used in were however not obtained from solving exactly the LFD equations but by means of a perturbative calculation with respect to the non relativistic wave function. Since, a consequent effort has been made to obtain exact solutions of LFD equations. The first results concerning J=0 states in a scalar model have been published in nucl-th/9912050. The construction of $J \ne 0$ states in LFD is complicated by the two following facts. First, the generators of the spatial rotations contain interaction and are thus difficult to handle. Second, one is always forced to work in a truncated Fock space, and consequently, the Poincaré group commutation relations between the generators -- ensuring the correct properties of the state vector under rotation -- are in practice destroyed. In the standard approach, with the light-front plane defined as $t+z=0$, this violation of rotational invariance manifests by the fact that the energy depends on the angular momentum projection on $z$-axis. We present here a method to construct $J\ne0$ states in the explicitly covariant formulation of LFD and show how it leads to a restoration of rotational invariance.

Weak binding limit and non zero angular momentum states in Light-Front Dynamics

We show some results concerning the weak binding limit for J=0 states -- which turn out to strongly differ from the non relativistic case -- together with the construction of non zero angular momentum states. The calculation of such states in the Light-Front Dynamics (LFD) framework has some peculiarities which are absent in other approaches. They are related to the fact that the rotation generators contain interaction. We present here the construction of non zero angular momentum states in LFD and show how it leads to a restoration of rotational invariance. For this purpose, the use of Light-Front Dynamics in its explicitly covariant formulation is of crucial importance since the dependence of the wave function on the light-front plane is explicitly parametrized.

Deuteron electromagnetic form factors in the Light-Front Dynamics

The deuteron form factors are calculated in the framework of the relativistic nucleon-meson dynamics, by means of the explicitly covariant light-front approach. The inflluence of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors is discussed. At $Q^2\leq 3$ (GeV/c)$^2$ the prediction for the structure function $A(Q^2)$ and for the tensor polarization observable $t_{20}$ are in agreement with the recent data of CEBAF/TJNAF.

Front-form calculation of the deuteron EM form factors

The deuteron form factors are calculated in the framework of the relativistic nucleon-meson dynamics. The relativistic effects change considerably the S- and D-waves of the deuteron, result in the dominating extra component in the deuteron wave function and generate the contact interaction between the nucleon, mesons and photon. The prediction for the polarization observable $t_{20}$ is in good agreement with the recent data of TJNAF/CEBAF.
