Benchmarking LHC searches for light 2HDM+$\boldsymbol{a}$ pseudoscalars

Using two suitable benchmark scenarios that satisfy the experimental constraints on the total decay width of the $125 \, {\rm GeV}$ Higgs boson, we determine the bounds on light CP-odd spin-0 states in the 2HDM+$a$ model that arise from existing LHC searches. Our work represents the first thorough study that considers the parameter space with $m_a \lesssim 100 \, {\rm GeV}$ and should prove useful for 2HDM+$a$ interpretations of future ATLAS, CMS and LHCb searches for pseudoscalars with masses below the electroweak scale.

NNLO event generation for $\boldsymbol{pp \to Zh \to \ell^+\ell^- b \bar b}$ production in the SM effective field theory

We consider associated $Zh$ production with $Z \to \ell^+ \ell^-$ and $h \to b \bar b$ decays in hadronic collisions. In the framework of the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) we calculate the QCD corrections to this process and achieve next-to-next-to-leading order plus parton shower (NNLO$+$PS) accuracy using the MiNNLO$_{\rm PS}$ method. This precision is obtained for a subset of six SMEFT operators, including the corrections from effective Yukawa- and chromomagnetic dipole-type interactions. Missing higher-order QCD effects associated with the considered dimension-six operators are estimated to have a relative numerical impact of less than a percent on the total rate once existing experimental limits on the relevant Wilson coefficients are taken into account. We provide a dedicated Monte Carlo (MC) code that evaluates the NNLO SMEFT corrections on-the-fly in the event generation. This MC generator is used to study the numerical impact of NNLO$+$PS corrections on the kinematic distributions in $pp \to Zh \to \ell^+ \ell^- b \bar b$ production employing simple SMEFT benchmark scenarios. We identify the invariant mass $m_{b \bar b}$ of the two $b$-tagged jets as well as the three-invariant jet mass $m_{b \bar b j}$ as particularly interesting observables to study SMEFT effects. These distributions receive contributions that change both their normalisation and shape with the latter modifications depending on the exact jet definition. To our knowledge SMEFT effects of this type have so far not been discussed in the literature. The presented MC generator can also serve as a starting point to obtain NNLO$+$PS accuracy for a suitable enlarged set of effective operators in the future.

Off-shell Higgs production at the LHC as a probe of the trilinear Higgs coupling

In the context of the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) we examine the constraints on the trilinear Higgs coupling that originate from off-shell Higgs production in proton-proton collisions. Our calculation of the $gg \to h^\ast \to Z Z \to 4 \ell$ process includes two-loop corrections to gluon-gluon-fusion Higgs production and one-loop corrections to the Higgs propagator and its decay. Employing a matrix-element based kinematic discriminant we determine the reach of LHC Run 3 and the high-luminosity option of the LHC in constraining the relevant SMEFT Wilson coefficients. We present constraints that are not only competitive with but also complementary to the projected indirect limits that one expects to obtain from inclusive measurements of single-Higgs production processes at future LHC runs.

Probing Higgs portals with matrix-element based kinematic discriminants in $ZZ \to 4 \ell$ production

A Higgs portal in the form of the operator $|H|^2$ provides a minimal and theoretically motivated link between the Standard Model (SM) and new physics. While Higgs portals can be constrained well by exotic Higgs decays if the beyond-the-SM states are light, testing scenarios where these particles are kinematically inaccessible is known to be challenging. We explore the sensitivity of future hadron collider measurements of $ZZ \to 4 \ell$ production in constraining Higgs portal interactions. It is shown that by using a matrix-element based kinematic discriminant the reach of the high-luminosity option of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) can be significantly enhanced compared to studies that are based on measurements of the four-lepton invariant mass spectrum alone. We also analyse the potential of the high-energy upgrade of the LHC and a Future Circular Collider in constraining new physics that couples to $|H|^2$. The obtained constraints are compared to the limits one expects to find from other single-Higgs probes. In addition, we provide an independent analysis of the relevant Higgs portal effects in double-Higgs production. We find that the constraints obtained from our $ZZ \to 4 \ell$ analysis turn out to be both competitive with and complementary to the projected limits obtained using other search techniques.

Singlet night in Feynman-ville: one-loop matching of a real scalar

A complete one-loop matching calculation for real singlet scalar extensions of the Standard Model to the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) of dimension-six operators is presented. We compare our analytic results obtained by using Feynman diagrams to the expressions derived in the literature by a combination of the universal one-loop effective action (UOLEA) approach and Feynman calculus. After identifying contributions that have been overlooked in the existing calculations, we find that the pure diagrammatic approach and the mixed method lead to identical results. We highlight some of the subtleties involved in computing one-loop matching corrections in SMEFT.

Bounds on CP-violating Higgs-gluon interactions: the case of vanishing light-quark Yukawa couplings

We investigate CP-violating interactions involving the Higgs boson and gluons within an effective field theory approach, focusing on the specific class of new-physics scenarios where the Yukawa couplings of light quarks are zero or strongly suppressed compared to the standard-model expectations. We compute the contributions of the most relevant higher-dimensional operators of Weinberg type to the electric dipole moment of the neutron (nEDM), which are induced by Feynman diagrams that involve an effective CP-violating Higgs-gluon coupling and top-quark loops. The resulting nEDM sensitivities and prospects are discussed and compared to the existing and expected LHC bounds. We find that future nEDM searches can set non-trivial constraints on CP-violating Higgs-gluon interactions even if the Higgs only couples to the third generation of quarks.

Constraints on the quartic Higgs self-coupling from double-Higgs production at future hadron colliders

We study the indirect constraints on the quartic Higgs self-coupling that arise from double-Higgs production at future hadron colliders. To this purpose, we calculate the two-loop contributions to the $gg \to hh$ amplitudes that involve a modified $h^4$ vertex. Based on our results, we estimate the reach of a $pp$ collider operating at $27 \, {\rm TeV}$ and $100 \, {\rm TeV}$ centre-of-mass energy in constraining the cubic and quartic Higgs self-couplings by measurements of double-Higgs and triple-Higgs production in gluon-fusion.

Collider constraints on light pseudoscalars

We investigate the bounds on light pseudoscalars that arise from a variety of collider searches. Special attention is thereby devoted to the mass regions $[3, 5] \, {\rm GeV}$ and $[9,11] \, {\rm GeV}$, in which a meaningful theoretical description has to include estimates of non-perturbative effects such as the mixing of the pseudoscalar with QCD bound states. A compendium of formulas that allows to deal with the relevant corrections is provided. It should prove useful for the interpretation of future LHC searches for light CP-odd spin-0 states.

Charm Quark Contribution to K+ -> pi+ nu anti-nu at Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order

We calculate the complete NNLO QCD corrections to the charm contribution of the rare decay K+ -> pi+ nu nu-bar. We encounter several new features, which were absent in lower orders. We discuss them in detail and present the results for the 2-loop matching conditions of the Wilson coefficients, the 3-loop anomalous dimensions, and the 2-loop matrix elements of the relevant operators that enter the NNLO renormalization group analysis of the Z-penguin and the electroweak box contribution. The inclusion of the NNLO QCD corrections leads to a significant reduction of the theoretical uncertainty from 9.8% down to 2.4% in the relevant parameter Pc, implying the leftover scale uncertainties in BR(K+ -> pi+ nu nu-bar) and in the determination of |V_td|, sin(2 beta), and gamma from the K -> pi nu nu system to be 1.3%, 1.0%, 0.006, and 1.2 degrees, respectively. For the charm quark MSbar mass mc=(1.30+-0.05) GeV and |V_us|= 0.2248 the NLO value Pc=0.37+-0.06 is modified to Pc=0.38+-0.04 at the NNLO level with the latter error fully dominated by the uncertainty in mc. We present tables for Pc as a function of mc and alphas(MZ) and a very accurate analytic formula that summarizes these two dependences as well as the dominant theoretical uncertainties. Adding the recently calculated long-distance contributions we find BR(K+ -> pi+ nu nu-bar)=(8.0+-1.1)*10^-11 with the present uncertainties in mc and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa elements being the dominant individual sources in the quoted error. We also emphasize that improved calculations of the long-distance contributions to K+ -> pi+ nu nu-bar and of the isospin breaking corrections in the evaluation of the weak current matrix elements from K+ -> pi0 e+ nu would be valuable in order to increase the potential of the two golden K -> pi nu nu decays in the search for new physics.

Indirect probes of the trilinear Higgs coupling: $gg \to h$ and $h \to γγ$

In the framework of the Standard Model effective field theory, we examine the indirect constraints on the trilinear Higgs coupling $λ$ that arise from Higgs production in gluon-gluon-fusion and diphoton Higgs decays. We calculate 2-loop contributions to the $gg \to h$ and $h \to γγ$ amplitudes that are affected by modifications of the trilinear Higgs-boson vertex. This calculation involves both the computation of anomalous dimensions and finite matching corrections. Based on our new results, we analyse the sensitivity of present and future measurements of the $hgg$ and $h γγ$ couplings to shifts in $λ$. Under the assumption that $O_6 = - λ\left (H^\dagger H \right )^3$ is the only dimension-6 operator that alters the trilinear Higgs interactions, we find that at present the considered loop-level probes provide stronger constraints than $pp \to 2h$. At future high-energy colliders indirect ${\cal O} (5)$ determinations of the trilinear Higgs coupling may be possible, making precision measurements of $gg \to h$ and $h \to γγ$ a useful addition to direct extractions of $λ$ through double-Higgs production.

On Mono-W Signatures in Spin-1 Simplified Models

The potential sensitivity to isospin-breaking effects makes LHC searches for mono-W signatures promising probes of the coupling structure between the Standard Model and dark matter. It has been shown, however, that the strong sensitivity of the mono-W channel to the relative magnitude and sign of the up-type and down-type quark couplings to dark matter is an artefact of unitarity violation. We provide three different solutions to this mono-W problem in the context of spin-1 simplified models and briefly discuss the impact that our findings have on the prospects of mono-W searches at future LHC runs.

Searching for new spin-0 resonances at LHCb

We study the phenomenology of light spin-0 particles and stress that they can be efficiently searched for at the LHCb experiment in the form of dimuon resonances. Given the large production cross sections in the forward rapidity region together with the efficient triggering and excellent mass resolution, it is argued that LHCb can provide unique sensitivity to such states. We illustrate our proposal using the recent measurement of Upsilon production by LHCb, emphasising the importance of mixing effects in the bottomonium resonance region. The implications for dimuon decays of spin-0 bottomonium states are also briefly discussed.

Simplified Models for Dark Matter Searches at the LHC

This document outlines a set of simplified models for dark matter and its interactions with Standard Model particles. It is intended to summarize the main characteristics that these simplified models have when applied to dark matter searches at the LHC, and to provide a number of useful expressions for reference. The list of models includes both s-channel and t-channel scenarios. For s-channel, spin-0 and spin-1 mediation is discussed, and also realizations where the Higgs particle provides a portal between the dark and visible sectors. The guiding principles underpinning the proposed simplified models are spelled out, and some suggestions for implementation are presented.

Stop searches in flavourful supersymmetry

Natural realisations of supersymmetry require light stops ${\tilde t}_1$, making them a prime target of LHC searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. Depending on the kinematic region, the main search channels are ${\tilde t_1}\to t \tilde χ^0_1$, ${\tilde t_1}\to W b \tilde χ^0_1$ and ${\tilde t_1}\to c \tilde χ^0_1$. We first examine the interplay of these decay modes with ${\tilde c_1}\to c \tilde χ^0_1$ in a model-independent fashion, revealing the existence of large regions in parameter space which are excluded for any ${\tilde t_1}\to c \tilde χ^0_1$ branching ratio. This effect is then illustrated for scenarios with stop-scharm mixing in the right-handed sector, where it has previously been observed that the stop mass limits can be significantly weakened for large mixing. Our analysis shows that once the LHC bounds from ${\tilde c_1}\to c \tilde χ^0_1$ searches are taken into account, non-zero stop-scharm mixing leads only to a modest increase in the allowed regions of parameter space, with large areas excluded for arbitrary mixing angles.

Anomalous triple gauge couplings from $B$-meson and kaon observables

We consider the three CP-conserving dimension-6 operators that encode the leading new-physics effects in the triple gauge couplings. The contributions to the standard-model electromagnetic dipole and semi-leptonic vector and axial-vector interactions that arise from the insertions of these operators are calculated. We show that radiative and rare $B$-meson decays provide, under certain assumptions, constraints on two out of the three anomalous couplings that are competitive with the restrictions obtained from LEP II, Tevatron and LHC data. The constraints arising from the $Z \to b \bar b$ electroweak pseudo observables, $K \to πν\bar ν$ and $ε^\prime/ε$ are also studied.

Beauty-quark and charm-quark pair production asymmetries at LHCb

The LHCb collaboration has recently performed a first measurement of the angular production asymmetry in the distribution of beauty quarks and anti-quarks at a hadron collider. We calculate the corresponding standard model prediction for this asymmetry at fixed-order in perturbation theory. Our results show good agreement with the data, which is provided differentially for three bins in the invariant mass of the $b \bar b$ system. We also present similar predictions for both beauty-quark and charm-quark final states within the LHCb acceptance for a collision energy of $\sqrt{s} = 13 \, {\rm TeV}$. We finally point out that a measurement of the ratio of the $b \bar b$ and $c \bar c$ cross sections may be useful for experimentally validating charm-tagging efficiencies.

LHC constraints on gauge boson couplings to dark matter

Collider searches for energetic particles recoiling against missing transverse energy allow to place strong bounds on the interactions between dark matter (DM) and standard model particles. In this article we update and extend LHC constraints on effective dimension-7 operators involving DM and electroweak gauge bosons. A concise comparison of the sensitivity of the mono-photon, mono-W, mono-Z, mono-W/Z, invisible Higgs-boson decays in the vector boson fusion mode and the mono-jet channel is presented. Depending on the parameter choices, either the mono-photon or the mono-jet data provide the most stringent bounds at the moment. We furthermore explore the potential of improving the current 8 TeV limits at 14 TeV. Future strategies capable of disentangling the effects of the different effective operators involving electroweak gauge bosons are discussed as well.

On new physics in $ΔΓ_d$

Motivated by the recent measurement of the dimuon asymmetry by the DØ collaboration, which could be interpreted as an enhanced decay rate difference in the neutral $B_d$-meson system, we investigate the possible size of new-physics contributions to $ΔΓ_d$. In particular, we perform model-independent studies of non-standard effects associated to the dimension-six current-current operators $(\bar{d} p)(\bar p^{\hspace{0.25mm}\prime} b)$ with $p,p^\prime= u,c$ as well as $(\bar{d}b) (\barττ)$. In both cases we find that for certain flavour or Lorentz structures of the operators sizable deviations of $ΔΓ_d$ away from the Standard Model expectation cannot be excluded in a model-independent fashion.

Simplified dark matter top-quark interactions at the LHC

Stringent limits on the interactions between dark matter (DM) and the standard model can be set by studying how initial-state or final-state particles recoil against missing transverse energy (MET). In this work, we improve, extend and correct LHC constraints on the interactions between DM and top quarks that are mediated by the exchange of spin-0 s-channel resonances. A comparison of the LHC run-1 sensitivity of the two main search channels is presented, which shows that mono-jet searches are typically more restrictive than the MET + tbar t searches. We furthermore explore the reach of the 14 TeV LHC. The collider constraints are compared to the restrictions arising from direct and indirect detection as well as the DM relic abundance, and we also reflect on effective field theory interpretations of the LHC exclusions.

An explicit Z'-boson explanation of the B->K*mu+mu- anomaly

A global fit to the recent B->K*mu+mu- data shows indications for a large new-physics contribution to the Wilson coefficient of the semi-leptonic vector operator. In this article we consider a simple Z'-boson model of 3-3-1 type that can accommodate such an effect without violating any other constraint from quark-flavour physics. Implications for yet unobserved decay modes such as B->Xsnunubar and longstanding puzzles like B->piK are also discussed. The Z'-boson masses required to address the observed anomaly lie in the range of 7 TeV. Such heavy Z' bosons evade the existing bounds from precision data and direct searches, and will remain difficult to discover even at a high-luminosity LHC. The potential of an ILC as well as the next generation of low-energy parity-violation experiments in constraining the Z'-boson parameter space is also examined.

Dark matter direct detection constraints from gauge bosons loops

While many interactions of dark matter (DM) with the standard model (SM) affect direct detection and LHC searches, there are only a few operators generating annihilation of DM into photons. All of these operators, except four of them, give rise to unsuppressed rates, rendering indirect detection superior to other search strategies. For two of the four effective interactions with velocity-suppressed annihilation cross sections, we identify a new type of loop effect which significantly enhances the associated direct detection rates. As a result, relevant constraints from next-generation direct detection experiments on DM-SM interactions, so far only bounded by the LHC, are obtained.

Determining the structure of dark-matter couplings at the LHC

The latest LHC mono-jet searches place stringent bounds on the pp -> chibar chi cross section of dark matter. Further properties such as the dark matter mass or the precise structure of the interactions between dark matter and the standard model can however not be determined in this manner. We point out that measurements of the azimuthal angle correlations between the two jets in 2 j + chibar chi events may be used to disentangle whether dark matter pair production proceeds dominantly through tree or loop diagrams. Our general observation is illustrated by considering theories in which dark matter interacts predominantly with the top quark. We show explicitly that in this case the jet-jet azimuthal angle difference is a gold-plated observable to probe the Lorentz structure of the couplings of dark matter to top quarks, thus testing the CP nature of the particle mediating these interactions.

(No) New physics in B_s mixing and decay

The status of possible new-physics signals in B_s,d-meson mixing and decay is reviewed. In particular, it is emphasized that the recent LHCb results, that find no evidence for a non-standard phase in B_s-barB_s mixing, make a consistent explanation of the D0 data on the like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry notoriously difficult. In order to clarify the inconclusive experimental situation, independent measurements of the semileptonic asymmetries are needed.

Constraints on CP-violating Higgs couplings to the third generation

Discovering CP-violating effects in the Higgs sector would constitute an indisputable sign of physics beyond the Standard Model. We derive constraints on the CP-violating Higgs-boson couplings to top and bottom quarks as well as to tau leptons from low-energy bounds on electric dipole moments, resumming large logarithms when necessary. The present and future projections of the sensitivities and comparisons with the LHC constraints are provided. Non-trivial constraints are possible in the future, even if the Higgs boson only couples to the third-generation fermions.

Loop corrections to Delta N_eff in large volume models

In large volume models reheating is driven by the decays of the volume modulus to the visible sector, while the decays to its axion partners result in dark radiation. In this article we discuss the impact of loop corrections on the only model-independent visible decay channel: the decay into Higgs pairs via a Giudice-Masiero term. Including such radiative effects leads to a more precise determination of the relative fraction of dark radiation, since by contrast all loop corrections to the volume axion decay mode are Planck suppressed. Assuming an MSSM spectrum and that the Giudice-Masiero coupling is fixed at the string scale by a shift symmetry in the Higgs sector, we arrive at a prediction for the effective number of neutrinos. The result turns out to be too large to be consistent with data, highly disfavouring the minimal model.

New Physics in Gamma_12^s: (sbar b) (taubar tau) Operators

Measurements performed at the Tevatron of both the like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry in B_d,s-meson samples and the mixing-induced CP asymmetry in B_s -> J/psi phi depart from their standard model (SM) predictions. This could be an indication for new CP phases in Delta B = 2 transitions, preferentially in B_s-Bbar_s mixing. The experimental situation, however, remained inconclusive, as it favored values of the element Gamma_12^s of the decay matrix in the B_s-meson system that are notably different from the SM expectation, suggesting the presence of new physics in the Delta B = 1 sector as well. The very recent LHCb measurements of B_s -> J/psi phi and B_s -> J/psi f_0, which do not find any evidence for a new-physics phase in the element M_12^s of the mass matrix, point into this direction as well. In this article, we explore the potential size of non-standard effects in Gamma_12^s stemming from dimension-six operators with flavor content (sbar b) (taubar tau). We show that since the existing constraints imposed by tree- and loop-level mediated B_d,s-meson decays are quite loose, absorptive new physics of this type can in part explain the current data. Our model-independent conclusions are finally contrasted with explicit analyses of the new-physics effects in B_s-Bbar_s mixing that can arise from leptoquarks or Z' bosons.

On minimal Z' explanations of the B->K*mu+mu- anomaly

Recently LHCb has announced a discrepancy of 3.7 sigma in one of the theoretically clean observables accessible through studies of angular correlations in B->K*mu+mu-. We point out that in the most minimal Z' setup that can address this anomaly there is a model-independent triple-correlation between new physics (NP) in B->K*mu+mu-, B_s-Bbar_s mixing, and non-unitarity of the quark-mixing matrix. This triple-correlation can be cast into a simple analytic formula that relates the NP contribution DeltaC9 to the Wilson coefficient of the semileptonic vector operator to a shift in the mass difference DeltaM_{B_s} and a violation of |Vud|^2+ |Vus|^2+ |Vub|^2 = 1. In contrast to the individual observables the found relation depends only logarithmically on the Z' mass. We show that that our findings allow for useful future tests of the pattern of NP suggested by the B->K*mu+mu- anomaly.

On the importance of loop-induced spin-independent interactions for dark matter direct detection

The latest results from LHC searches for jets in association with missing transverse energy place strong bounds on the scattering cross section of dark matter. For the case of spin-dependent or momentum suppressed interactions these limits seem to be superior to the bounds from direct detection experiments. In this article, we show that loop contributions can significantly alter this conclusion and boost direct detection bounds, whenever they induce spin-independent interactions. This effect is most striking for tensor and pseudotensor interactions, which induce magnetic and electric dipole moments at loop level. For axialvector and anapole interactions a relevant contribution to direct detection signals arises from loop-induced Yukawa-like couplings between dark matter and quarks. We furthermore compare the resulting bounds to additional constraints on these effective operators arising from indirect searches and relic density requirements.

QCD effects in mono-jet searches for dark matter

LHC searches for missing transverse energy in association with a jet allow to place strong bounds on the interactions between dark matter and quarks. In this article, we present an extension of the POWHEG BOX capable of calculating the underlying cross sections at the next-to-leading order level. This approach enables us to consistently include the effects of parton showering and to apply realistic experimental cuts. We find significant differences from a fixed-order analysis that neglects parton showering effects. In particular, next-to-leading order corrections do not lead to a significant enhancement of the mono-jet cross section once a veto on additional jets is imposed. Nevertheless, these corrections reduce the theoretical uncertainties of the signal prediction and therefore improve the reliability of the derived bounds. We present our results in terms of simple rescaling factors, which can be directly applied to existing experimental analyses and discuss the impact of changing experimental cuts.

The impact of heavy-quark loops on LHC dark matter searches

If only tree-level processes are included in the analysis, LHC monojet searches give weak constraints on the dark matter-proton scattering cross section arising from the exchange of a new heavy scalar or pseudoscalar mediator with Yukawa-like couplings to quarks. In this letter we calculate the constraints on these interactions from the CMS 5.0/fb and ATLAS 4.7/fb searches for jets with missing energy including the effects of heavy-quark loops. We find that the inclusion of such contributions leads to a dramatic increase in the predicted cross section and therefore a significant improvement of the bounds from LHC searches.

Charm-Quark Contribution to K_L -> mu^+ mu^- at Next-to-Next-to-Leading

We calculate the charm-quark contribution to the decay K_L -> mu^+ mu^- in next-to-next-to-leading order of QCD. This new contribution reduces the theoretical uncertainty in the relevant parameter P_c from +/-22% down to +/-7%, corresponding to scale uncertainties of +/-3% and +/-6% in the short-distance part of the branching ratio and the determination of the Wolfenstein parameter rhobar from K_L -> mu^+ mu^-. The error in P_c = 0.115 +/- 0.018 is now in equal shares due to the combined scale uncertainties and the current uncertainty in the charm-quark mass. We find BR (K_L -> mu^+ mu^-)_SD = (0.79 +/- 0.12) x 10^-9, with the present uncertainty in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element V_td being the dominant individual source in the quoted error.

Higgs Production in a Warped Extra Dimension

Measurements of the Higgs-boson production cross section at the LHC are an important tool for studying electroweak symmetry breaking at the quantum level, since the main production mechanism gg-->h is loop-suppressed in the Standard Model (SM). Higgs production in extra-dimensional extensions of the SM is sensitive to the Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitations of the quarks, which can be exchanged as virtual particles in the loop. In the context of the minimal Randall-Sundrum (RS) model with bulk fields and a brane-localized Higgs sector, we derive closed analytical expressions for the gluon-gluon fusion process, finding that the effect of the infinite tower of virtual KK states can be described in terms of a simple function of the fundamental (5D) Yukawa matrices. Given a specific RS model, this will allow one to easily constrain the parameter space, once a Higgs signal has been established. We explain that discrepancies between existing calculations of Higgs production in RS models are related to the non-commutativity of two limits: taking the number of KK states to infinity and removing the regulator on the Higgs-boson profile, which is required in an intermediate step to make the relevant overlap integrals well defined. Even though the one-loop gg-->h amplitude is finite in RS scenarios with a brane-localized Higgs sector, it is important to introduce a consistent ultraviolet regulator in order to obtain the correct result.

Loop-induced dark matter direct detection signals from gamma-ray lines

Improved limits as well as tentative claims for dark matter annihilation into gamma-ray lines have been presented recently. We study the direct detection cross section induced from dark matter annihilation into two photons in a model-independent fashion, assuming no additional couplings between dark matter and nuclei. We find a striking non-standard recoil spectrum due to different destructively interfering contributions to the dark matter nucleus scattering cross section. While in the case of s-wave annihilation the current sensitivity of direct detection experiments is insufficient to compete with indirect detection searches, for p-wave annihilation the constraints from direct searches are comparable. This will allow to test dark matter scenarios with p-wave annihilation that predict a large di-photon annihilation cross section in the next generation of experiments.

MSSM: Cornered and Correlated

Inspired by the latest results of ATLAS and CMS on the search for the standard model (SM) Higgs scalar, we discuss in this article the correlations between Higgs-boson properties, low-energy observables, such as B -> X_sgamma, B_s -> mu^+mu^-, and (g-2)_mu, and the dark matter (DM) relic density. We focus on the corners of the MSSM parameter space where the pp -> h -> gammagamma signal is enhanced due to the presence of a light stau state. In this region tan(beta), M_A, A_t, and mu take large values, and we find striking correlations between many of the considered observables. In particular, the B -> X_sgamma branching fraction is enhanced, while the B_s -> mu^+mu^- rate tends to be below the SM expectation. In contrast, the Higgs-boson couplings show good overall agreement with the preliminary experimental determinations, the DM abundance is consistent with observation, and the discrepancy in (g-2)_mu is reduced. The predicted deviations and found correlations could be tested in the near future and hence may become very valuable as guidelines and consistency checks.

Bounds on Warped Extra Dimensions from a Standard Model-like Higgs Boson

We point out that the discovery of a light Higgs boson in the γγ, ZZ and WW decay channels at the LHC, with cross sections not far from the predictions of the Standard Model, would have important implications for the parameters of warped extra-dimension models. Due to loop effects of Kaluza-Klein particles, these models predict a significant reduction of the Higgs production cross section via gluon-gluon fusion, combined with an enhancement of the ratio Br(h->γγ)/Br(h->ZZ). LHC measurements of these decays will probe Kaluza-Klein masses up to the 10 TeV range, exceeding by far the reach for direct production.

Complete NNLO QCD Analysis of B -> X_s l^+ l^- and Higher Order Electroweak Effects

We complete the next-to-next-to-leading order QCD calculation of the branching ratio for B -> X_s l^+ l^- including recent results for the three-loop anomalous dimension matrix and two-loop matrix elements. These new contributions modify the branching ratio in the low-q^2 region, BR_ll, by about +1% and -4%, respectively. We furthermore discuss the appropriate normalization of the electromagnetic coupling alpha and calculate the dominant higher order electroweak effects, showing that, due to accidental cancellations, they change BR_ll by only -1.5% if alpha(mu) is normalized at mu = O(m_b), while they shift it by about -8.5% if one uses a high scale normalization mu = O(M_W). The position of the zero of the forward-backward asymmetry, q_0^2, is changed by around +2%. After introducing a few additional improvements in order to reduce the theoretical error, we perform a comprehensive study of the uncertainty. We obtain BR_ll(1 GeV^2 <= q^2 <= 6 GeV^2) = (1.57 +- 0.16) x 10^-6 and q_0^2 = (3.76 +- 0.33) GeV^2 and note that the part of the uncertainty due to the b-quark mass can be easily reduced.

Massive Color-Octet Bosons: Bounds on Effects in Top-Quark Pair Production

A critical survey of the existing direct and indirect constraints on massive spin-one color octets is presented. Since such new degrees of freedom appear in any extension of the color gauge group to a product of at least two SU(3) factors, we keep our discussion as independent as possible from the underlying theory. In the framework of scenarios that involve flavor non-universal couplings, we show that excessive flavor-changing neutral currents can be avoided by a suitable alignment in flavor space. Constraints from electroweak precision observables and direct production at hadron colliders still leave space for sizable new-physics effects in top-quark pair production, in particular a large forward-backward asymmetry. In this context, we derive a model-independent upper bound on the asymmetry that applies whenever top-antitop production receives the dominant corrections from s-channel exchange of a new single color-octet resonance.

Chromomagnetic Dipole-Operator Corrections in Bbar -> X_sgamma at O(beta_0 alpha_s^2)

We calculate the fermionic corrections to the photon-energy spectrum of Bbar -> X_sgamma which arise from the self-interference of the chromomagnetic dipole operator Q_8 at next-to-next-to-leading order by applying naive non-abelianization. The resulting O(beta_0 alpha_s^2) correction to the Bbar -> X_sgamma branching ratio amounts to a relative shift of +0.12% (+0.27%) for a photon-energy cut of 1.6 GeV (1.0 GeV). We also comment on the potential size of resummation and non-perturbative effects related to Q_8.

The Custodial Randall-Sundrum Model: From Precision Tests to Higgs Physics

We reexamine the Randall-Sundrum (RS) model with enlarged gauge symmetry SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R x U(1)_X x P_LR in the presence of a brane-localized Higgs sector. In contrast to the existing literature, we perform the Kaluza-Klein (KK) decomposition within the mass basis, which avoids the truncation of the KK towers. Expanding the low-energy spectrum as well as the gauge couplings in powers of the Higgs vacuum expectation value, we obtain analytic formulas which allow for a deep understanding of the model-specific protection mechanisms of the T parameter and the left-handed Z-boson couplings. In particular, in the latter case we explain which contributions escape protection and identify them with the irreducible sources of P_LR symmetry breaking. We furthermore show explicitly that no protection mechanism is present in the charged-current sector confirming existing model-independent findings. The main focus of the phenomenological part of our work is a detailed discussion of Higgs-boson couplings and their impact on physics at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. For the first time, a complete one-loop calculation of all relevant Higgs-boson production and decay channels is presented, incorporating the effects stemming from the extended electroweak gauge-boson and fermion sectors.

Top-Quark Forward-Backward Asymmetry in Randall-Sundrum Models Beyond the Leading Order

We calculate the ttbar forward-backward asymmetry, A_FB^t, in Randall-Sundrum (RS) models taking into account the dominant next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections in QCD. At Born level we include the exchange of Kaluza-Klein (KK) gluons and photons, the Z boson and its KK excitations, as well as the Higgs boson, whereas beyond the leading order (LO) we consider the interference of tree-level KK-gluon exchange with one-loop QCD box diagrams and the corresponding bremsstrahlungs corrections. We find that the strong suppression of LO effects, that arises due to the elementary nature and the mostly vector-like couplings of light quarks, is lifted at NLO after paying the price of an additional factor of alpha_s/(4 pi). In spite of this enhancement, the resulting RS corrections in A_FB^t remain marginal, leaving the predicted asymmetry SM-like. As our arguments are solely based on the smallness of the axial-vector couplings of light quarks to the strong sector, our findings are model-independent and apply to many scenarios of new physics that address the flavor problem via geometrical sequestering.

Four-Loop Anomalous Dimensions for Radiative Flavour-Changing Decays

We evaluate the complete four-loop anomalous dimension matrix that is necessary for determining the effective flavour-changing neutral current couplings qbar-q'-gamma and qbar-q'-g at the next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD. The resulting O(alpha_s^2(mu_b)) correction to the B -> X_s gamma branching ratio amounts to around -2.9% for mu_b = 5 GeV, and -4.4% for mu_b = 2.5 GeV
