Quantum speed limit and stability of coherent states in quantum gravity

Utilizing the program of expectation values in coherent states and its recently developed algorithmic tools, this letter investigates the dynamical properties of cosmological coherent states for Loop Quantum Gravity. To this end, the Quantum Speed Limit is adapted to Quantum Gravity, yielding necessary consistency checks for any proposal of stable families of states. To showcase the strength of the developed tools, they are applied to a prominent model: the Euclidean part of the quantum scalar constraint. We report the variance of this constraint evaluated on a family of coherent states showing that, for short times, this family passes the Quantum Speed Limit test, allowing the transition from one coherent state to another one.

Periodic discretized continuous observables are neither continuous nor discrete

Most of the fundamental characteristics of quantum mechanics, such as non-locality and contextuality, are manifest in discrete, finite-dimensional systems. However, many quantum information tasks that exploit these properties cannot be directly adapted to continuous-variable systems. To access these quantum features, continuous quantum variables can be made discrete by binning together their different values, resulting in observables with a finite number "$d$" of outcomes. While direct measurement indeed confirms their manifestly discrete character, here we employ a salient feature of quantum physics known as mutual unbiasedness to show that such coarse-grained observables are in a sense neither continuous nor discrete. Depending on $d$, the observables can reproduce either the discrete or the continuous behavior, or neither. To illustrate these results, we present an example for the construction of such measurements and employ it in an optical experiment confirming the existence of four mutually unbiased measurements with $d = 3$ outcomes in a continuous variable system, surpassing the number of mutually unbiased continuous variable observables.

Exploring complete positivity in hierarchy equations of motion

We derive a purely algebraic framework for the identification of hierarchy equations of motion that induce completely positive dynamics and demonstrate the applicability of our approach with several examples. We find bounds on the violation of complete positivity for microscopically derived hierarchy equations of motion and construct well-behaved phenomenological models with strongly non-Markovian revivals of quantum coherence.

Nonlinear Schrödinger equation from generalized exact uncertainty principle

Inspired by the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP), which adds gravitational effects to the standard description of quantum uncertainty, we extend the exact uncertainty principle (EUP) approach by Hall and Reginatto [J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. (2002) 35 3289], and obtain a (quasi)nonlinear Schrödinger equation. This quantum evolution equation of unusual form, enjoys several desired properties like separation of non-interacting subsystems or planewave solutions for free particles. Starting with the harmonic oscillator example, we show that every solution of this equation respects the gravitationally-induced minimal position uncertainty proportional to the Planck length. Quite surprisingly, our result successfully merges the core of classical physics with non-relativistic quantum mechanics in its extremal form. We predict that the commonly accepted phenomenon, namely a modification of a free-particle dispersion relation due to quantum gravity might not occur in reality.

Certainty relations, mutual entanglement and non-displacable manifolds

We derive explicit bounds for the average entropy characterizing measurements of a pure quantum state of size $N$ in $L$ orthogonal bases. Lower bounds lead to novel entropic uncertainty relations, while upper bounds allow us to formulate universal certainty relations. For $L=2$ the maximal average entropy saturates at $\log N$ as there exists a mutually coherent state, but certainty relations are shown to be nontrivial for $L \ge 3$ measurements. In the case of a prime power dimension, $N=p^k$, and the number of measurements $L=N+1$, the upper bound for the average entropy becomes minimal for a collection of mutually unbiased bases. Analogous approach is used to study entanglement with respect to $L$ different splittings of a composite system, linked by bi-partite quantum gates. We show that for any two-qubit unitary gate $U\in \mathcal{U}(4)$ there exist states being mutually separable or mutually entangled with respect to both splittings (related by $U$) of the composite system. The latter statement follows from the fact that the real projective space $\mathbb{R}P^{3}\subset\mathbb{C}P^{3}$ is non-displacable. For $L=3$ splittings the maximal sum of $L$ entanglement entropies is conjectured to achieve its minimum for a collection of three mutually entangled bases, formed by two mutually entangling gates.

Majorization approach to entropic uncertainty relations for coarse-grained observables

We improve the entropic uncertainty relations for position and momentum coarse-grained measurements. We derive the continuous, coarse-grained counterparts of the discrete uncertainty relations based on the concept of majorization. The obtained entropic inequalities involve two Rényi entropies of the same order, and thus go beyond the standard scenario with conjugated parameters. In a special case describing the sum of two Shannon entropies the majorization-based bounds significantly outperform the currently known results in the regime of larger coarse graining, and might thus be useful for entanglement detection in continuous variables.

Uncertainty relations for characteristic functions

We present the uncertainty relation for the characteristic functions (ChUR) of the quantum mechanical position and momentum probability distributions. This inequality is more general than the Heisenberg Uncertainty Relation, and is saturated in two extremal cases for wavefunctions described by periodic Dirac combs. We further discuss a broad spectrum of applications of the ChUR, in particular, we constrain quantum optical measurements involving general detection apertures and provide the uncertainty relation that is relevant for Loop Quantum Cosmology. A method to measure the characteristic function directly using an auxiliary qubit is also briefly discussed.

Occam's Razor Cuts Away the Maximum Entropy Principle

I show that the maximum entropy principle can be replaced by a more natural assumption, that there exists a phenomenological function of entropy consistent with the microscopic model. The requirement of existence provides then a unique construction of the related probability density. I conclude the letter with an axiomatic formulation of the notion of entropy, which is suitable for exploration of the non-equilibrium phenomena.

Strong Majorization Entropic Uncertainty Relations

We analyze entropic uncertainty relations in a finite dimensional Hilbert space and derive several strong bounds for the sum of two entropies obtained in projective measurements with respect to any two orthogonal bases. We improve the recent bounds by Coles and Piani, which are known to be stronger than the well known result of Maassen and Uffink. Furthermore, we find a novel bound based on majorization techniques, which also happens to be stronger than the recent results involving largest singular values of submatrices of the unitary matrix connecting both bases. The first set of new bounds give better results for unitary matrices close to the Fourier matrix, while the second one provides a significant improvement in the opposite sectors. Some results derived admit generalization to arbitrary mixed states, so that corresponding bounds are increased by the von Neumann entropy of the measured state. The majorization approach is finally extended to the case of several measurements.

Constructive entanglement test from triangle inequality

We derive a simple lower bound on the geometric measure of entanglement for mixed quantum states in the case of a general multipartite system. The main ingredient of the presented derivation is the triangle inequality applied to the root infidelity distance in the space of density matrices. The obtained bound leads to entanglement criteria with a straightforward interpretation. Proposed criteria provide an experimentally accessible, powerful entanglement test.

Entropic trade-off relations for quantum operations

Spectral properties of an arbitrary matrix can be characterized by the entropy of its rescaled singular values. Any quantum operation can be described by the associated dynamical matrix or by the corresponding superoperator. The entropy of the dynamical matrix describes the degree of decoherence introduced by the map, while the entropy of the superoperator characterizes the a priori knowledge of the receiver of the outcome of a quantum channel Phi. We prove that for any map acting on a N--dimensional quantum system the sum of both entropies is not smaller than ln N. For any bistochastic map this lower bound reads 2 ln N. We investigate also the corresponding Rényi entropies, providing an upper bound for their sum and analyze entanglement of the bi-partite quantum state associated with the channel.

Majorization entropic uncertainty relations

Entropic uncertainty relations in a finite dimensional Hilbert space are investigated. Making use of the majorization technique we derive explicit lower bounds for the sum of Rényi entropies describing probability distributions associated with a given pure state expanded in eigenbases of two observables. Obtained bounds are expressed in terms of the largest singular values of submatrices of the unitary rotation matrix. Numerical simulations show that for a generic unitary matrix of size N = 5 our bound is stronger than the well known result of Maassen and Uffink (MU) with a probability larger than 98%. We also show that the bounds investigated are invariant under the dephasing and permutation operations. Finally, we derive a classical analogue of the MU uncertainty relation, which is formulated for stochastic transition matrices.

Pair creation by time-dependent electric fields: Analytic solutions

Exact analytical solutions are presented for the time evolution of the density of pairs produced in the QED vacuum by a uniform electric field that is adiabatically switched on starting at minus infinity. Pair production is described by the Dirac-Heisenberg-Wigner function introduced before [Phys. Rev. D 44, 1825 (1991)]. The explicit solution is obtained by an extension of the method of the spinorial decomposition to deal with a time-varying electric field. The main result of this work is that the pair density is an analytic function of the field strength; it can be expanded into a convergent power series. Therefore, the essential singularity present in the Schwinger formula is to be attributed to the infinitely long duration of the process of pair creation by a time-independent field.

Reliable Entanglement Detection Under Coarse--Grained Measurements

We derive reliable entanglement witnesses for coarse--grained measurements on continuous variable systems. These witnesses never return a "false positive" for identification of entanglement, under any degree of coarse graining. We show that, even in the case of Gaussian states, entanglement witnesses based on the Shannon entropy can outperform those based on variances. We apply our results to experimental identification of spatial entanglement of photon pairs.

The Shannon-entropy-based uncertainty relation for $D$-dimensional central potentials

The uncertainty relation based on the Shannon entropies of the probability densities in position and momentum spaces is improved for quantum systems in arbitrary $D$-dimensional spherically symmetric potentials. To find it, we have used the $L^p$ -- $L^q$ norm inequality of L. De Carli and the logarithmic uncertainty relation for the Hankel transform of S. Omri. Applications to some relevant three-dimensional central potentials are shown.

Collectibility for Mixed Quantum States

Bounds analogous to entropic uncertainty relations allow one to design practical tests to detect quantum entanglement by a collective measurement performed on several copies of the state analyzed. This approach, initially worked out for pure states only [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 150502 (2011)], is extended here for mixed quantum states. We define collectibility for any mixed states of a multipartite system. Deriving bounds for collectibility for positive partially transposed states of given purity provides a new insight into the structure of entangled quantum states. In case of two qubits the application of complementary measurements and coincidence based detections leads to a new test of entanglement of pseudopure states.

Heisenberg position-momentum uncertainty relation beyond central potentials

Recently it was shown in [New J. Phys. 8, 330 (2006)] that the three dimensional Heisenberg uncertainty principle might be signifficantly sharpened if the relevant quantum state describes the particle in a central potential. I extend that result to the case of states which are not the eigenstates of the square of the angular momentum operator. I derive a new lower bound which involves the mean value and the variance of the $\hat{L}^2$ operator.

Optimal Uncertainty Relations for Extremely Coarse-grained Measurements

We derive two quantum uncertainty relations for position and momentum coarse-grained measurements. Building on previous results, we first improve the lower bound for uncertainty relations using the Renyi entropy, particularly in the case of coarse-grained measurements. We then sharpen a Heisenberg-like uncertainty relation derived previously in [Europhys. Lett. 97, 38003, (2012)] that uses variances and reduces to the usual one in the case of infinite precision measurements. Our sharpened uncertainty relation is meaningful for any amount of coarse graining. That is, there is always a non-trivial uncertainty relation for coarse-grained measurement of the non-commuting observables, even in the limit of extremely large coarse graining.

Collective Uncertainty Entanglement Test

For a given pure state of a composite quantum system we analyze the product of its projections onto a set of locally orthogonal separable pure states. We derive a bound for this product analogous to the entropic uncertainty relations. For bipartite systems the bound is saturated for maximally entangled states and it allows us to construct a family of entanglement measures, we shall call collectibility. As these quantities are experimentally accessible, the approach advocated contributes to the task of experimental quantification of quantum entanglement, while for a three-qubit system it is capable to identify the genuine three-party entanglement.

Shannon entropy as a measure of uncertainty in positions and momenta

This paper is prepared as a contribution to the proceedings after the 12th ICSSUR/Feynfest Conference held in Foz do Iguacu (Brazil) from 2 to 6 May 2011. In the first part I briefy report the topic of entropic uncertainty relations for position and momentum variables. Then I investigate the discrete Shannon entropies related to the case of fnite number of detectors set to measure probability distributions in position and momentum spaces. I derive an uncertainty relation for the sum of the Shannon entropies which generalizes previous approaches [Phys. Lett. 103 A, 253 (1984)] based on an infnite number of detectors (bins).

Time evolution of the QED vacuum in a uniform electric Field: Complete analytic solution by spinorial decomposition

Exact analytical solutions are presented for the time evolution of the density of pairs produced in the QED vacuum by a time-independent, uniform electric field. The mathematical tool used here to describe the pair production is the Dirac-Heisenberg-Wigner function introduced before [Phys. Rev. D 44, 1825 (1991)]. The initial value problem for this function is solved by decomposing the solution into a product of spinors. The equations for spinors are much simpler and are solved analytically. These calculations are nonperturbative since pair production is due to quantum-mechanical tunneling and the explicit solutions clearly exhibit their nonanalytic behavior.
