Optimal Control of Singular Parabolic PDEs Modeling Multiphase Stefan-type Free Boundary Problems

Optimal control of the singular nonlinear parabolic PDE which is a distributional formulation of multidimensional and multiphase Stefan-type free boundary problem is analyzed. Approximating sequence of finite-dimensional optimal control problems is introduced via finite differences. Existence of the optimal control and the convergence of the sequence of discrete optimal control problems both with respect to functional and control is proved. In particular, convergence of the method of finite differences, and existence, uniqueness and stability estimations are established for the singular PDE problem under minimal regularity assumptions on the coefficients.

Evolution of interfaces for the non-linear parabolic p-Laplacian type reaction-diffusion equations. II. Fast diffusion vs. absorption

We present a full classification of the short-time behaviour of the interfaces and local solutions to the nonlinear parabolic $p$-Laplacian type reaction-diffusion equation of non-Newtonian elastic filtration \[ u_t-\Big(|u_x|^{p-2}u_x\Big)_x+bu^β=0, \ 1<p<2, β>0 \] If the interface is finite, it may expand, shrink, or remain stationary as a result of the competition of the diffusion and reaction terms near the interface, expressed in terms of the parameters $p,β, sign~b$, and asymptotics of the initial function near its support. In some range of parameters, strong domination of the diffusion causes infinite speed of propagation and interfaces are absent. In all cases with finite interfaces we prove the explicit formula for the interface and the local solution with accuracy up to constant coefficients. We prove explicit asymptotics of the local solution at infinity in all cases with infinite speed of propagation. The methods of the proof are based on nonlinear scaling laws, and a barrier technique using special comparison theorems in irregular domains with characteristic boundary curves. A full description of small-time behaviour of the interfaces and local solutions near the interfaces for slow diffusion case when $p>2$ is presented in a recent paper {\it Abdulla \& Jeli, Europ. J. Appl. Math. 28, 5(2017), 827-853.}

Interface Development for the Nonlinear Degenerate Multidimensional Reaction-Diffusion Equations

This paper presents a full classification of the short-time behavior of the interfaces in the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear second order degenerate parabolic PDE \[ u_t-Δu^m +b u^β=0, \ x\in \mathbb{R}^N, 0<t<T \] with nonnegative initial function $u_0$ such that \[ supp~u_0 = \{|x|<R\}, \ u_0 \sim C(R-|x|)^α, \quad{as} \ |x|\to R-0, \] where $m>1, C,α, β>0, b \in \mathbb{R}$. Interface surface $t=η(x)$ may shrink, expand or remain stationary depending on the relative strength of the diffusion and reaction terms near the boundary of support, expressed in terms of the parameters $m,β, α, sign\ b$ and $C$. In all cases we prove explicit formula for the interface asymptotics, and local solution near the interface.

Optimal control of multiphase free boundary problems for nonlinear parabolic equations

We consider the optimal control of singular nonlinear partial differential equation which is the distributional formulation of the multiphase Stefan type free boundary problem for the general second order parabolic equation. Boundary heat flux is the control parameter, and the optimality criteria consist of the minimization of the $L_2$-norm declination of the trace of the solution to the PDE problem at the final moment from the given measurement. Sequence of finite-dimensional optimal control problems is introduced through finite differences. We establish existence of the optimal control and prove the convergence of the sequence of discrete optimal control problems to the original problem both with respect to functional and control. Proofs rely on establishing a uniform $L_{\infty}$ bound, and $W_2^{1,1}$-energy estimate for the discrete nonlinear PDE problem with discontinuous coefficient.

Optimal Stefan Problem

We consider the inverse multiphase Stefan problem with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition on a bounded Lipschitz domain, where the density of the heat source is unknown in addition to the temperature and the phase transition boundaries. The variational formulation is pursued in the optimal control framework, where the density of the heat source is a control parameter, and the criteria for optimality is the minimization of the $L_2-$norm declination of the trace of the solution to the Stefan problem from a temperature measurement on the whole domain at the final time. The state vector solves the multiphase Stefan problem in a weak formulation, which is equivalent to Dirichlet problem for the quasilinear parabolic PDE with discontinuous coefficient. The optimal control problem is fully discretized using the method of finite differences. We prove the existence of the optimal control and the convergence of the discrete optimal control problems to the original problem both with respect to cost functional and control. In particular, the convergence of the method of finite differences for the weak solution of the multidimensional multiphase Stefan problem is proved. The proofs are based on achieving a uniform $L_{\infty}$ bound and $W_2^{1,1}$ energy estimate for the discrete multiphase Stefan problem.

On the Optimal Control of the Free Boundary Problems for the Second Order Parabolic Equations. II.Convergence of the Method of Finite Differences

We develop a new variational formulation of the inverse Stefan problem, where information on the heat flux on the fixed boundary is missing and must be found along with the temperature and free boundary. We employ optimal control framework, where boundary heat flux and free boundary are components of the control vector, and optimality criteria consist of the minimization of the sum of $L_2$-norm declinations from the available measurement of the temperature flux on the fixed boundary and available information on the phase transition temperature on the free boundary. This approach allows one to tackle situations when the phase transition temperature is not known explicitly, and is available through measurement with possible error. It also allows for the development of iterative numerical methods of least computational cost due to the fact that for every given control vector, the parabolic PDE is solved in a fixed region instead of full free boundary problem. In {\it Inverse Problems and Imaging, 7, 2(2013), 307-340} we proved well-posedness in Sobolev spaces framework and convergence of time-discretized optimal control problems. In this paper we perform full discretization and prove convergence of the discrete optimal control problems to the original problem both with respect to cost functional and control.

Regularity of Infinity for Elliptic Equations with Measurable Coefficients and Its Consequences

This paper introduces a notion of regularity (or irregularity) of the point at infinity for the unbounded open subset of $\rr^{N}$ concerning second order uniformly elliptic equations with bounded and measurable coefficients, according as whether the A-harmonic measure of the point at infinity is zero (or positive). A necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a unique bounded solution to the Dirichlet problem in an arbitrary open set of $\rr^{N}, N\ge 3$ is established in terms of the Wiener test for the regularity of the point at infinity. It coincides with the Wiener test for the regularity of the point at infinity in the case of Laplace equation. From the topological point of view, the Wiener test at infinity presents thinness criteria of sets near infinity in fine topology. Precisely, the open set is a deleted neigborhood of the point at infinity in fine topology if and only if infinity is irregular.
