Interpreting Quantum Chromodynamics from Spin Glass- and Polymer Analogies

In an informal way some kind of Ising Lattice QCD is introduced which allows to interprete and discuss the well-known theory of quantum chromodynamics (confinement, quarks and gluons, etc.) from simple phenomena of magnetism and polymer physics. Also the viewpoint of duality is stressed. Moreover, the non-abelian character of the Lie group SU(3) is important. The essential arguments for confinement and asymptotic freedom are given at the very end of the manuscript, after an appendix.

On the dynamics of spin systems in the Landau-Lifshitz theory

In the framework of the Landau-Lifshitz equations without any dissipation (an approximation which may also be helpful for finite but weak Gilbert damping), with all interactions included, for general ground states, geometries and domain structures, and many types of effective fields the dynamics of the spin precession around this ground state is considered. At first the precession is treated in the linear approximation. For the eigenmodes of the precession one has a `rule of geometric mean' for the eigenfrequencies. For the eigenmodes pseudo-orthogonality relations are obtained, which reflect the gyrotropic and elliptic character of the spin precession and differ from those known from the Schrodinger equation. Moreover, pseudo-orthogonality relations are valid 'everywhere' (e.g., both in the outer region and in the core region of a magnetic vortex). Then also some aspects of the nonlinear mode coupling with emphasis on `confluence' and `splitting' processes of elementary magnetic spin-wave excitations are considered. At the same time these processes contribute to the Gilbert damping. There are thus essential differences to quantum mechanics, although at a first glance one discovers many similarities. From the results one may also get insights of why these systems are so complex that (although the essential quantities depend only on the local values of the partially long-ranged effective magnetic fields) practically only detailed experiments and computer simulations make sense.

Exchange coupling and magnetization profiles of binary and ternary magnetic multilayers

Within a spin-polarized LMTO approach in the Atomic-Sphere approximation we calculate ab initio the magnetic properties of various binary and ternary multilayers composed of Fe, Co, Ni, Cr, V and Cu. The emphasis lies on the indirect exchange interaction of the magnetic sandwiches across the antiferromagnetic or non-magnetic spacers, and on the profiles of the intrinsic resp. induced magnetic moments. Among other results we find: (i) that Ni is very sensitive on its neighborhood and that (ii) at the interface to Fe, V gets almost as strongly polarized as Cr, whereas in the interiour layers, the V sandwich remains nonpolarized.

Numerical Studies on the Magnetism of Fe-Ni-Mn Alloys in the Invar Region

By means of self-consistent semi-empirical LCAO calculations we study the itinerant magnetism of (Fe_{0.65}Ni_{0.35})_{1-y} Mn_y alloys for y between 0 and 0.22 at T=0 K, neglecting only the transverse spin components. We find that the magnetic behaviour is quite complicated on a local scale. In addition to ferromagnetic behaviour, also metastable spin-glass-like configurations are found. In the same approach, using a direct numerical calculation by the Kubo-Formalism without any fit parameters, we also calculate the electrical conductance in the magnetic state and find that the $y$-dependence observed in the experiments is well reproduced by our calculations, except of an overall factor of rougly 5, by which our resistivities are too large.
