High-order energy stable numerical schemes for a nonlinear variational wave equation modeling nematic liquid crystals in two dimensions

We consider a nonlinear variational wave equation that models the dynamics of the director field in nematic liquid crystals with high molecular rotational inertia. Being derived from an energy principle, energy stability is an intrinsic property of solutions to this model. For the two-dimensional case, we design numerical schemes based on the discontinuous Galerkin framework that either conserve or dissipate a discrete version of the energy. Extensive numerical experiments are performed verifying the scheme's energy stability, order of convergence and computational efficiency. The numerical solutions are compared to those of a simpler first-order Hamiltonian scheme. We provide numerical evidence that solutions of the 2D variational wave equation loose regularity in finite time. After that occurs, dissipative and conservative schemes appear to converge to different solutions.

An error estimate for viscous approximate solutions to degenerate anisotropic convection-diffusion equations

We consider a viscous approximation for a nonlinear degenerate convection-diffusion equations in two space dimensions, and prove an $L^1$ error estimate. Precisely, we show that the $L^1_{\mathrm{loc}}$ difference between the approximate solution and the unique entropy solution converges at a rate $\mathcal{O}(\eps^{1/2})$, where $\eps$ is the viscous parameter.

Multilevel Monte Carlo for Random Degenerate Scalar Convection Diffusion Equation

We consider the numerical solution of scalar, nonlinear degenerate convection-diffusion problems with random diffusion coefficient and with random flux functions. Building on recent results on the existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence of weak solutions on data in the deterministic case, we develop a definition of random entropy solution. We establish existence, uniqueness, measurability and integrability results for these random entropy solutions, generalizing \cite{Mishr478,MishSch10a} to possibly degenerate hyperbolic-parabolic problems with random data. We next address the numerical approximation of random entropy solutions, specifically the approximation of the deterministic first and second order statistics. To this end, we consider explicit and implicit time discretization and Finite Difference methods in space, and single as well as Multi-Level Monte-Carlo methods to sample the statistics. We establish convergence rate estimates with respect to the discretization parameters, as well as with respect to the overall work, indicating substantial gains in efficiency are afforded under realistic regularity assumptions by the use of the Multi-Level Monte-Carlo method. Numerical experiments are presented which confirm the theoretical convergence estimates.

An error estimate for the finite difference approximation to degenerate convection -diffusion equations

We consider semi-discrete first-order finite difference schemes for a nonlinear degenerate convection-diffusion equations in one space dimension, and prove an L1 error estimate. Precisely, we show that the L1 loc difference between the approximate solution and the unique entropy solution converges at a rate O(\Deltax 1/11), where \Deltax is the spatial mesh size. If the diffusion is linear, we get the convergence rate O(\Deltax 1/2), the point being that the O is independent of the size of the diffusion

Finite difference schemes for the symmetric Keyfitz-Kranzer system

We are concerned with the convergence of numerical schemes for the initial value problem associated to the Keyfitz-Kranzer system of equations. This system is a toy model for several important models such as in elasticity theory, magnetohydrodynamics, and enhanced oil recovery. In this paper we prove the convergence of three difference schemes. Two of these schemes is shown to converge to the unique entropy solution. Finally, the convergence is illustrated by several examples.

Convergence of numerical schemes for the Korteweg-de Vries-Kawahara equation

We are concerned with the convergence of a numerical scheme for the initial-boundary value problem associated to the Korteweg-de Vries- Kawahara equation (in short Kawahara equation), which is a transport equation perturbed by dispersive terms of 3rd and 5th order. This equation appears in several uid dynamics problems. It describes the evolution of small but finite amplitude long waves in various problems in uid dynamics. We prove here the convergence of both semi-discrete as well as fully-discrete finite difference schemes for the Kawahara equation. Finally, the convergence is illustratred by several examples.

Error Estimate for a Fully Discrete Spectral Scheme for Korteweg-de Vries-Kawahara Equation

We are concerned with the convergence of spectral method for the numerical solution of the initial-boundary value problem associated to the Korteweg-de Vries-Kawahara equation (in short Kawahara equation), which is a transport equation perturbed by dispersive terms of 3rd and 5th order. This equation appears in several fluid dynamics problems. It describes the evolution of small but finite amplitude long waves in various problems in fluid dynamics. These equations are discretized in space by the standard Fourier- Galerkin spectral method and in time by the explicit leap-frog scheme. For the resulting fully discrete, conditionally stable scheme we prove an L2-error bound of spectral accuracy in space and of second-order accuracy in time.

Higher order finite difference schemes for the magnetic induction equations with resistivity

In this paper, we design high order accurate and stable finite difference schemes for the initial-boundary value problem, associated with the magnetic induction equation with resistivity. We use Summation-By-Parts (SBP) finite difference operators to approximate spatial derivatives and a Simultaneous Approximation Term (SAT) technique for implementing boundary conditions. The resulting schemes are shown to be energy stable. Various numerical experiments demonstrating both the stability and the high order of accuracy of the schemes are presented.

Implicit finite difference schemes for the magnetic induction equations

We describe high order accurate and stable fully-discrete finite difference schemes for the initial-boundary value problem associated with the magnetic induction equations. These equations model the evolution of a magnetic field due to a given velocity field. The finite difference schemes are based on Summation by Parts (SBP) operators for spatial derivatives and a Simultaneous Approximation Term (SAT) technique for imposing boundary conditions. We present various numerical experiments that demonstrate both the stability as well as high order of accuracy of the schemes
