Room-temperature transport properties of spin-orbit coupled Fermi systems: Spin thermoelectric effects, phonon skew scattering

In this note we summarize our recent results for the temperature dependence of transport coefficients of metallic films in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. Our focus is on (i) the spin Nernst and the thermal Edelstein effects, and (ii) the phonon skew scattering contribution to the spin Hall conductivity, which is relevant for the temperature dependence of the spin Hall angle. Depending on the parameters, the latter is expected to show a non-monotonous behavior.

Electronic transport properties of (fluorinated) metal phthalocyanine

The magnetic and transport properties of the metal phthalocyanine (MPc) and F16_{16}MPc (M = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Ag) families of molecules in contact with S-Au wires are investigated by density functional theory within the local density approximation, including local electronic correlations on the central metal atom. The magnetic moments are found to be considerably modified under fluorination. In addition, they do not depend exclusively on the configuration of the outer electronic shell of the central metal atom (as in isolated MPc and F16_{16}MPc) but also on the interaction with the leads. Good agreement between the calculated conductance and experimental results is obtained. For M = Ag, a high spin filter efficiency and conductance is observed, giving rise to a potentially high sensitivity for chemical sensor applications.

Transmission through correlated Cun_nCoCun_n heterostructures

The effects of local electronic interactions and finite temperatures upon the transmission across the Cu4_4CoCu4_4 metallic heterostructure are studied in a combined density functional and dynamical mean field theory. It is shown that, as the electronic correlations are taken into account via a local but dynamic self-energy, the total transmission at the Fermi level gets reduced (predominantly in the minority spin channel), whereby the spin polarization of the transmission increases. The latter is due to a more significant dd-electrons contribution, as compared to the non-correlated case in which the transport is dominated by ss and pp electrons.

Magnetic, electronic and vibrational properties of metal and fluorinated metal phthalocyanines

The magnetic and electronic properties of metal phthalocyanines (MPc) and fluorinated metal phthalocyanines (F16_{16}MPc) are studied by means of spin density functional theory (SDFT). Several metals (M) such as Ca, all first d-row transition metals and Ag are investigated. By considering different open shell transition metals it is possible to tune the electronic properties of MPc, in particular the electronic molecular gap and total magnetic moment. Besides assigning the structural and electronic properties of MPc and F16_{16}MPc, the vibrational modes analysis of the ScPc\textendash ZnPc series have been studied and correlated to experimental measurements when available.

Density functional theory for a model quantum dot: Beyond the local-density approximation

We study both static and transport properties of model quantum dots, employing density functional theory as well as (numerically) exact methods. For the lattice model under consideration the accuracy of the local-density approximation generally is poor. For weak interaction, however, accurate results are achieved within the optimized effective potential method, while for intermediate interaction strengths a method combining the exact diagonalization of small clusters with density functional theory is very successful. Results obtained from the latter approach yield very good agreement with density matrix renormalization group studies, where the full Hamiltonian consisting of the dot and the attached leads has to be diagonalized. Furthermore we address the question whether static density functional theory is able to predict the exact linear conductance through the dot correctly - with, in general, negative answer.

Transport properties of copper phthalocyanine based organic electronic devices

Ambipolar charge carrier transport in Copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) is studied experimentally in field-effect transistors and metal-insulator-semiconductor diodes at various temperatures. The electronic structure and the transport properties of CuPc attached to leads are calculated using density functional theory and scattering theory at the non-equilibrium Green's function level. We discuss, in particular, the electronic structure of CuPc molecules attached to gold chains in different geometries to mimic the different experimental setups. The combined experimental and theoretical analysis explains the dependence of the mobilityand the transmission coefficient on the charge carrier type (electrons or holes) and on the contact geometry. We demonstrate the correspondence between our experimental results on thick films and our theoretical studies of single molecule contacts. Preliminary results for fluorinated CuPc are discussed.

Quasiclassical theory of electronic transport in mesoscopic systems: Luttinger liquids revisited

The method of the quasiclassical Green's function is used to determine the equilibrium properties of one-dimensional (1D) interacting Fermi systems, in particular, the bulk and the local (near a hard wall) density of states. While this is a novel approach to 1D systems, our findings do agree with standard results for Luttinger liquids obtained with the bosonization method. Analogies to the so-called P(E)P(E) theory of tunneling through ultrasmall junctions are pointed out and are exploited. Further applications of the Green's function method for 1D systems are discussed.
